It's ironic that the success of director Doug Liman's microbudgeted Swingers brought the sensibilities of the underground lounge music revival to a broader American audience; in many other countries, Frank, Dino, Sammy, Bobby Darin, and Count Basie have long been revered as cultural heroes.
The retro-chic movement has always had one well-kept secret on its side--high musical quality--and this collection plays like an adventurous hipster anthology that's open-minded enough to invite George Jones, Roger Miller, and The Average White band to the party. Also includes standout tracks by modern jazz-swing revivalists Joey Altruda and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. --Jerry McCulley

Eclectic mix of jazz, funk, swing, standards, and R&B.......2007-05-29
A perfect sampling of the music from one of the greatest indie films to hit the streets. This CD has everything. If I had to complain, and this is really not a negative about the CD as much as a small gripe because I love the song, the only thing missing is Heart's "Magic Man". That song was on the movie but I understand that it didn't fit in with the rest of the offerings in this compilation.
A quick rundown of my highlights for you: Dean Martin croons "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" and it still sounds classy, cool; "Paid for Loving" is a funky song, heavy on the funk guitar, with sappy-smooth vocals; "With Plenty of Money and You" by Tony Bennett and Count Basie and the Boys, come on, it's a Vegas standard; three offerings by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy with "You and Me and the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight" being the highlight of the 3, these guys are amazing and do swing proud; "Knock Me a Kiss" is a great standard; "Groove Me" is a treat if you love bass lines, the song is light on synth and guitars with a thick bass lead; Roger Miller's "King of the Road" is a great classic that somehow fits in with the edgier stuff along with "She Thinks I Still Care"; Bobby Darin tops of the album with "I'm Beginning to See the Light"
The album has everything but Rock & Roll, and for once, that is OK with me.
A great soundtrack from a great movie. A definite must have. Dig in and enjoy!
It swings!.......2007-01-03
This cd swings! Great compilation, especially for the casual swing enthusiast who doesn't want to invest in many different swing cds. It's a great cd to go to when you want to listen to some great dance music!
Endo.......2004-06-04
It's so money and it doesn't even know it.......The movie was amazing with an equally intresting soundtrack......Three thumbs up.
Cool Soundtrack for a Cool Movie.......2004-02-03
In no other movie have I witnessed music govern the tone like in "Swingers." Sure, other movies have great, moving soundtracks that can move you to tears, but this movie lived and breathed off of the music played throughout.
There is not one bad track on this disc. "You're Nobody Til Somebody Loves You" should be mandatory listening for every blue-blooded American. "Paid For Loving," "Knock Me A Kiss" and "Groove Me" are great as well. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the Jazz Jury add instant modern hipster cred to the sound of this album. Country fried hits like "King Of the Road" and "She Thinks I Still Care" fit perfectly in this collection.
This album dominates the entire movie. Without it, "Swingers" would just have been another meager budget cult film. It opened the floodgates for bands like the "Cherry Poppin' Daddies" and good ol' Brian Setzer. It single-handedly made it cool, if only for a little while, to swing again. Gap owes a lot of credit to this album for doing what it did for their commercials.
It is a highly important, necessary piece of music history. You have to own this if you call yourself a true music fan.
Can I gush over this disc anymore? BUY IT.
It's "Money"........2003-11-19
Besides complementing the movie well, this soundtrack is pretty much an instant lounge party. It's a great mix of swing, crooners, funk, and other random oddballs. The best tracks being from "Dean Martin", "Love Jones", "Roger Miller", and "George Jones". But it's all good and fun. It could have been even better if it had bits from the movie throughout it, like between tracks. But it's still the ultimate road music for beautiful babies going to Vegas.

"Arlen, Mercer and Frank DeVol ~ Ella!".......2003-11-07
Ella's recordings could fill an entire library ~ her performances are flawless with each tune more satisfying than the previous one. From the mid '30s we've come to enjoy "The First Lady of Song" ~ Verve Records has released for the first time on CD "Sings Sweet Songs for Swingers", originally released on LP on November of 1958 featuring 12 unforgettable tracks that will leave no doubt about the best of the best female vocalist ever to record and perform. What is so nice about this collection is she can change tempos on a dime and never miss a beat.
Ella's style is so timeless as you're instantly amazed by her voice ~ take for instance the tracks "SWEET AND LOVELY", "LET'S FALL IN LOVE" and "MAKIN' WHOOPEE" with absolutely to die for arrangements by the legendary Frank DeVol ~ swingin' standards that work perfectly. "GONE WITH THE WIND", as only Ella can do justice ~ "MOONLIGHT SERENADE", an old Glenn Miller classic that Ella completely remodels and it works ~ "CAN'T WE BE FRIENDS", this time solo but previously with Pop Armstrong ~ "LULLABY OF BROADWAY", another favorite from the past and our lady of song makes it her own ~ but the highlight in my book is "OUT OF THIS WORLD", from the pen of Arlen and Mercer has always stuck in my mind, ever since I first heard it.
This album and her voice is truly one of a kind ~ she sang with such sweet emotion. The music is magical, it brightens my spirits when I listen as she gave the world her talent...always in a postive mood. Ella is truly one of the best vocalists ever to grace this planet ~ what a great lady ~ there is only one ELLA and you've gotta love her!

A CLASSIC RELEASE AT LAST ON CD!.......2003-09-24
Ella fans, clamor and quake no more! This is one of the last albums we've been waiting for on CD (only Hello Dolly remains unreleased; keep the faith!) Here is Ella in absolutely stunning form, and abetted by the versatile Frank DeVol orchestra in the late 50's, with a folder full of classic gems of the Great American Songbook. There's no way you can miss. While half of the tracks could be considered "covers" (Ella would either re-record them later or had done them previously), there are a few surprises here, including the fooler of the album, the classic Johnny Mercer penned I REMEMBER YOU, with it's slow simmering opening verse giving way to a flag waving swinger. Definitely a different and swingin' treatment that might not work for anyone else. Her later version with Nelson Riddle in the 60's would be more true to the usual renditions of this classic, but this version makes for a good alternative. SWEET AND LOVELY, a done-to-death standard takes on new life here and the arrangement is crisp and swinging as well. Ella is in wonderful form and with Harry "Sweets" Edison's fills, this is the perfect opener to the album. GONE WITH THE WIND was one that Ella would carry through until the end of her career. She used it early on, in concerts, and covered it again here.
A lighter version of Lady Day's "prelude to no kiss", MY OLD FLAME also shines as one of this set's standouts (was that a Plas Johnson sax solo at the break?) It's a shame that we don't have complete personnel listings included, but no complaints here; just thrilled to have this one on CD at last! And to be universally correct, we have a dreamy, straight forward version of MOONLIGHT SERENADE, and an easy going version of EAST OF THE SUN (And West Of The Moon) that grows steadily into a swinger. Yes, Ella has sung and swung for the swingers over the years, but this album just endears her more to we adoring fans.

Swingin' Boogie Woogie.......2007-02-07
Another great set from Proper, and as usual packed with information in the booklet. A real musical history lesson. But hey all you Rock-A-Billy fans be warned this is alot of early 40's swing, and boogie stuff, and you might not find it to your likin' Well worth the money and some real gems!

Great Set Of Western Swing.......2005-11-17
"Stompin' Singers & Western Swingers" takes up where Proper's last Western Swing set, "Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys", left off.
Plenty of great toe-tapping music from the famous and not-so-famous performers of the era.
The songs are the original versions and the sound quality is just fine.
Also included is an informative booklet with facts about the songs and the artists.
As with every other box set I own from Proper, this is a tremendous value.
Uneven but worth the price for one GREAT song.......2005-09-21
Not what I expected. I was hoping for lots of Western swing here but many of these songs do not qualify for that category - there is no way that some of these songs could be considered Western swing. Lots of filler. But then you come upon Wade Ray's "It's all your fault!" What a find! This is one GREAT song. Sheer perfection: great lyrics, great music, a perfect vocal, wonderful guitar and fiddle. I uploaded that one in my ipod and have been listening to it ever since. If my ipod was a jukebox, I would have spent the equivalent of this set's price in quarters for all the times I have played that song. If you love Western swing, get the Bob Wills box set. He was the king of Western swing and his band was red hot.
The Best Deal in Town.......2005-03-31
Over 100 western swing masterpieces, most not available elsewhere, are here for your dancing and listening enjoyment! Most of them are up-tempo and have jazzy and jivey themes with hot solos and impassioned vocals - nothing called "country" music today compares to this. If you have the previous set in the series (Cowboys, Doughboys and Playboys), you'll know how good the Proper label sets are, and this one is at least as good. There's also an informative booklet included, with pictures, which will teach you all you need to know about the music and the artists. If you have ever heard of Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Buck Owens or Asleep at the Wheel and appreciate this kind of music you simply can't go wrong here.

Kermit Smokes!!.......2000-10-26
I've had the pleasure of seeing Kermit & the BBQ Swingers live more than once, & I think that this CD really does a good job of capturing their sound. Also, as a frequent visitor to NOLA, this disc evokes the whole feeling of the city every time I put it on. Do yourself a favor, and pick up a copy of this CD. Better yet, take a trip to New Orleans and check Kermit out live @ Vaughn's!!
The next best thing..........2000-03-28
If you can't be in New Orleans to hear him live, this is the next best thing. Capturing the heart and soul of the New Orleans music scene are songs "Smokin' With Some Barbecue" and "Do Watch Wanna (The Final Chapter).
Next Best to Live.......2000-03-04
Next to a Thursday night performance at Vaughn's and eating red beans and rice in between Kermit's sets, this is the next best thing. The album really captures the flavor of a live show, and the subtlety of this group -- as a prior reviewer said, from the traditional, St. James Infirmary to the more funky, the sound of this band is pure NO. Great listening any time of day, any mood. Only down side is the New Orleans song, which I thought fell a little flat, but still 5 starts

Versus shines through all expectations of what you would consider good music.......2007-07-13
Versus...ahh...musically magical in a very manic and immediate...listen to me sing and jerk your soul around kinda way. Listening to this album repeatedly over the years just allows me to build up these incredible feelings of nostalgia. A band like this, as Bukowski said so eloquently, is like finding gold in a garbage dump; a washed out 5 dollar bill in your jean pocket; an unexpected kiss from your new, strange lover; a cup of good steaming coffee while you blow smoke from your cigarette into the air. Fantasic and ecstatic in its urgency to brand you with their sound.
This lyrics are rugged, yearning and melodically raw. Female and male vocals come together on this album so distinctively and yet so complimentary. What a real pleasure hearing this band put together one rugged and immediate song after another. If you listen closely, you will hear a band driving their spikey souls into your soft inners.
This is by far their best album. I saw them live and they will keep you enthralled with their energetic performance and their sound. They have perfected driving their sounds into anyone who will listen.
Don't let this classic indie album pass you by.
I strongly believe that after repeated listenings of this album, you will begin to develop a vague romantic nostalgia for the melodies. This nostalgia will develop unbeknownst to your active consciousness and your unconscious will haunt you with these songs of lust, lost feelings and misguided yearnings for romance.
Listening to this album is like listening to a young, hungry, passionate singer and his band yelling, groping, melodically hammering, sternly searching for some kind of love undefined.
Possibly the best indie rock album, ever!!.......2003-06-28
High praise, I know, but well deserved on this, the greatest of Versus releases. "Lose That Dress" is simply one of the most stunning entrances on a rock album. If those chords don't touch you, check your pulse...or turn up your stereo, it's too quiet.
In my opinion this was the height for this essential Indie band although Two Cents deserves a good look as well. Be sure to check out Dead Leaves (a singles comp) and The Stars Are Insane as well.
GOOD ALBUM.......1999-07-01
All I have to say is, if your smart and you like good pop, you'll buy this album.
Get this CD or else!.......1999-04-04
I bought the Versus CD "Two Cents Plus Plus Tax" before this one. I decided I should stop listening to the same CD over and over again and finally go out and buy another Versus CD. Not that I was getting sick of it, but I wanted to hear their other stuff. I love "Secret Swingers" just as much as "Two Cents..." My favorite tracks are 1 and 6, Lose That Dress and Double Suicide (Mercy Killing). The blending of Fontaine and Richard's voices is fantastic on "Mercy Killing". I love Versus very very very very very much! They are excellent live, too. If you get the chance, see them live! I am going to buy one of their older albums "Dead Leaves" very soon. I'm sure it won't disappoint. Oh yeah, the person from Hatfield, what a coincidence! I used to live in Hatfield!!!
This is good music.......1999-01-09
This album is ever so enjoyable to listen to. The quality of indie rock has been declining steadily. However, Versus is always a joy. "Jealous" is a wonderful song. This is good music for a long car ride.

The first Staples disc to be recorded with Stax producer Al Bell and the first made with sister Yvonne as Tyrone's replacement, 1971's The Staple Swingers is best known for producing the hit single "Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha-Na-Boom Boom)." But it's one of the group's finest overall moments--there's nary a clunker on this outing. Recorded at Muscle Shoals with horn arrangements and playing by the Bar-Kays, this disc is the flowering of the Staple Singers' mid-tempo, gospel-flavored '70s funk-pop. "This Is a Perfect World," an uplifting antiviolence anthem, melds Sly Stone-style acid-funk to the Staples's pure vocals. Check out "What's Your Thing": that snaking Delta slide by Pops is still in the mix, but there's a whole lot more--bluesy organ lines, bad-ass bass, heavy guitar, the works. The Staple Swingers is the group's bluesiest, grittiest release, and charts the move from the soul-folk style of the '60s into the primo funk-pop of their Stax heyday. --Mike McGonigal

A wondeful cross over for the STape Singers.......1999-04-30
I have a copy of this cd, and it is a mind opening experence. IT shows the Staples crossing over to a new message in their music.
This is a cd that shows off their talents for reacing people out of the church circut.

Anyone looking to comprehend the understated power of the Rat Pack should first read Nick Tosches's brilliant Dean Martin biography Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams. By cutting past nightclub clichés to matters both carnal and appreciably dark, Tosches locates the music and the period's special appeal. Looking to take that bygone era a few steps closer to absurdity, try this collection--a mop-up of tracks featured in the movie Swingers, but left off the original soundtrack. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Mel Torme, and the awkward Ann-Margret are all naturals and deserve to be here. But you have to wonder who invited Paul Anka to this party. Probably the same joker who added Marty & Elaine's cover of the Bee Gees' "Staying Alive" and Heart's completely out-of-place hard rock contribution, "Magic Man." Very strange, indeed. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
Perhaps a little biased..........2001-01-31
...Because this CD has my all-time favorite dance song on it: Baby (You've Got What It Takes). It took me 2 weeks to find the version I liked after I first heard Dinah and Brook's fabulous standard-setting rendition. Such fun! The rest is good too, with the exception of the swing version of "Stayin' Alive," which I find simply awful. The Heart song that was left off the original makes for a good mix. If it was a record I would have wonr it out in just the first few weeks!
Nice companion to the original, but not necessary.......2000-08-28
To answer at least one of Rob O'Connor's questions from the above Amazon.com review: Stayin' Alive is included because it is featured in the movie. Imagine that, a song on a soundtrack that was in the movie... strange thing indeed. The same goes for the Heart song Majic Man. Beyond that the rest of this "soundtrack" are songs that the creators of the movie used as "inspiration". Royal Crown Revue is included here since RCR was the band the Jon Favreau used to dance to at the Derby before Big Bad Voodoo Daddy took over. Other songs are tunes that they wanted to include but could not afford at the time. All in all it's a nice companion to the original. There is a nice photo booklet included. This album is not meant to be a scrapbook of the "swing scene" and lindy hoppers, but a portrait of the music in and around the retro-lounge lifestyle.
The ultimate soundtrack sequel!.......1999-10-05
Finally there is a soundtrack sequel out there that I liked the first one enough to buy the secound. It isn't quite as good as the first one yet it is very enjoyable. I couldn't help but buy it when I saw it on the sales racks. Check it out if you like the original. The only complaint is that it is too short. Some dialogue from the film would be nice.
Not Bad...good Swingers music...more 2 1/2 stars than 2.......1999-09-30
This 2nd Swingers Soundtrack is not bad. It only has maby 2 or 3 songs that are acutally in the movie, but its not bad. I personally like the first soundtrack better. It has more songs from the movie and is just all around better. This one is good to but I like the first one better and I think you will to.

Revisiting the Freshmen moving on.......2000-11-17
These two reissues from the Capitol files chronicle the Four Freshmen in the 1960s after they lost co-founder Don Barbour and replaced him with Bill Comstock. "Stars in Our Eyes" is a salute to other vocal groups of the period, while "The Swingers" takes the quartet more into jazz. The remastered sound is good, and the packaging includes the original LP album covers. No Four Freshmen collector should be without these albums, and thanks to Collectors' Choice, they're now available in one CD.

Nothing Like Beating A Dead Horse . . . ........2006-03-26
I was very disappointed when I got this CD as it turns out to be another one of those "let's turn modern rock songs into swingy lounge tunes" albums. And it's not even good. After past albums where the band shines, this one jsut shows them jumping on the bandwagon. It's too bad that this particular bandwagon fell apart from too many bad "swing" bands. 8 to the bar is too good of a band to do something like this. Or so I thought. I think they need to take a step back and think of something new rather then trying to keep their swing status alive in the main stream. Especially by copying Richard Cheese and Paul Anka. And let's face it, Paul Anka's attempt wasn't that great either. It really is a shame that they had to stoop so low on this.
