Masterpiece.......2004-09-19
Randy Crawford lets loose on this recording and that is a welcomed suprise. From the gripping "I stand accused" to the sad ballad "Nobody" you'll find her in great form and power! This soulful release will have you begging for more. At 11 songs it is simply not enough.
Another standout is the optimistic and upbeat "Declaration of love". Randy is known for being a subtle vocalist at times, but she lets it all hang out on the wrenching "Blue mood" and bitter "I hope you'll be very unhappy without me".
The true gem is her version of Marvin Gaye's "Just to keep you satisfied". What starts out as a low key romantic pleading Randy Crawford turns into a soulful mourn. This gives the original a run for its money. She stays true to the arrangement but gives it a female twist that cannot be rivaled. Well done!
All Time Favorite!.......2004-03-18
Whenever I compile a list of all-time favorite albums, this one is on it. Randy's vocals, song selection and the musicianship are flawless. I had been a fan of Randy Crawford from her first solo LP, with "Everything Must Change" and more, but this lp still stands as one I can play all of the time. She never oversings yet lets loose and rips into the meat of a song. "I Satnd Accused" is along the lines of Etta James. "Newborn Child" is superb lyric and beautifully understated vocals. Her cover of Marvin's "Just To Keep You Satisified" just blows me away- Wait for the 2nd time she rips into (oh, so subtly) the phrase "I could never love nobody like I love you baby". There aren't many albums that I recommend totally, but this is most defeintely one!!!!
One of the best female vocals.......2003-12-31
I first discovered Randy while listening to Hackett's 'Please don't touch', she was featured on one track. I was truly amazed by her voice. Then I dug out her own discography and IMHO her first effort is an anthology. The music is soul, jazz-rock oriented and the vocals are sublime. Randy began singing in a church, and the gospel-like intonation of her voice is patent here. If you like pop with a jazz inflexion, say in the style of earlier TOTO or Steely Dan, it will a pleasure for you to listen to this fantastic record.
THIS is Randy's soul masterpiece........2003-03-11
I must agree with the previous reviewer. I'm accustomed to the adult-contemporary, "gentle" sounding Randy Crawford, so when I first heard "Raw Silk" I was astounded. I never knew Randy Crawford could sing like this! I knew she grew up singing in church...this album confirms that fact.
Song for song, lyric for lyric, and note for note -- this album belongs in everyone's collection, no matter WHAT type of music is your favorite. You may be in for a shock if you're used to the laid-back Randy, just as I was...but what a pleasant shock it will be! If you remember when she covered Stevie Wonder's "Joy Inside My Tears" in 1995, and it sounded like she was about to let it loose then, you'll have an idea what this entire album is about...except she chooses to actually LET it loose here.
I disagree that Randy's own composition is a dud, because all of the songs are gems. There is enough variety and depth here to keep the listener from ever getting bored, and not one of the songs is over-produced (something that occasionally happens on her recent recordings).
I am confident that you will enjoy this album, and it will probably leave you wishing that Ms. Crawford recorded more music of this nature!
Highly Underrated!.......2003-02-18
To me, this is Randy's best singing (bar-none),
matched with unique song selection. In fact,
it's the only album I've ever heard her really
just let GO. If you are used to the quiet and under-
stated Randy, this is a surprise! She can really
wail and get down-right bluesy. Unfortunately she
hasn't made an album as consistently delicious as
this in years. She's come close-("Secret Combination",
Rich & Poor") but "Raw Silk" is essential. Highlights
are many including "I Stand Accused" ,"Where There Was
Darkness", "Love Is Like A New Born Child" etc. The only
dud is her own song " I Got Myself A Happy Song". That
tune has never has been music to my ears. Stephan
Goldman gets kudos for his great arrangements. Enjoy!

Great track for the dance floor.......2002-06-03
Boy, is this a track !..
Perfect silky smooth airy vocals over simple jazzy-type beats and synthizisers and an infection hook and chorus... In the true spirit of Salsoul, this song is a shining example of ultra slick productions and arrangement.
There are many great dance songs out there, but if you listen to this one,... your ears will prick up. Sampled by numerous artists, mostly hiphop... if you can get your hands on the Jungle Brothers with Qtip and Monie Love version with the title ' Doing our own Thang '.... you can see where the inspiration came from...
If you're a dj and/or music enthusiast, do yourself a favour and get a copy of this one.

Not exactly "wiminsý music".......2001-05-09
CRI, the publishers of this disc, "Lesbian American Composers", describe it as a collection of music from composers who `just happen to be gay'. They might equally well have termed it `music from composers who just happen to be women', or, even, for that matter, `just happen to be American'! To my ears, at least, there is little about these compositions that celebrates anything of the composers' gender, sexuality or nationality. The collection presented here nevertheless comes across as something more than merely a marketing gimmick. CRI are to be praised for bringing works such as these to public notice.
The ten tracks on this disc are all comparatively recent compositions (or at least revisions) and come from the hands of (mostly) American women composers, who range in age from 28 to 72. As one might expect, the collection encompasses a wide range of musical styles and aesthetics, from "Raw Silk (a Rag) - a rather straightforward piano rag by "Nurit Tilles' - to Ruth Anderson's hilarious "SUM (State of the Union Message)" - a tape collage of snippets taken from old American TV commercials.
Also as might be expected, Pauline Oliveros provides the most politically challenging work. Her opening "Poem of Change" appears to be a fairly simple work for voice and sonic events but is, none the less, every bit as thought provoking and disturbing as only Oliveros can be. Annea Lockwood's setting of Joy Harjo's poem, "I Give You Back", for solo vocalist, comes a pretty close second, though. In contrast, "Barbie's Other Shoe", an improvisation by Lori Freedman on half clarinet and Marilyn Lerner on piano, has considerably less bite and acerbity than the title might suggest. Also disappointing is Linda Montano's "Portrait of Sappho", which for me quickly descends into a tedious enumeration of body parts.
Amongst the strongest "straight" works (if I can use such a term within the context of this disc), "I Want to Live" is a duet taken from Act II of Paula M. Kimper's opera, "Patience and Sarah". This work is based on a novel by Isabel Miller and is described by the composer as the first opera to present a hopeful and positive portrayal of lesbian life. Musically, it is a fine example of contemporary classical music theatre. Jennifer Higdon's "running the edgE" is a similar example of good, solid, contemporary classical music - a fast and furious duet for flutes, with piano accompaniment.
For me, however, the two most rewarding works on the disc are the tape pieces, "Wolf Chaser", by Eve Beglarian, and Madelyn Byrne's "Winter". "Wolf Chaser" is a powerful and entrancing mix of sonorities, derived from slowed-down recordings of a wolf-chaser, together with miscellaneous additional processed sound samples and a driving, yet lyrical, violin line. It is the longest work on the CD, unfolding in a leisurely but assured manner throughout its 14-minute duration. The sparse and cold electronic textures of "Winter", on the other hand, derive from computer-processed samples of the sounds of bowed crotales, mixed with vocal samples, drawn from Marlin Serner's rendition of a haiku by Basho, which forms the centre-piece to this enthralling work.
All in all, this is a fascinating survey of the current state of some much-neglected areas of contemporary music.

Oh, What a surprise!.......2001-10-23
Rawsilk is a hidden treasure! I had heard 3 songs off of Rawsilk and decided to buy the CD. All the cuts on the CD turned out to be great! The songs all have a soft, swaying, relaxing rythym. If you're looking for a new sax player with alot of talent be sure and check out Glenn McNulty's Rawsilk.
