Celtic Lullaby
Editorial Reviews

So much has been made of the music for babies and children to sleep, eat, and have their brains grow optimally that a collection of lullabies might seem a little suspect. But when the folks at Ellipsis Arts take up the task of creating a lullaby collection, the results are bound to be fruitful. Sure, the emphasis in this collection of 19 songs is on gentleness, but this music is so seldom heard that it's endlessly enticing. The Celtic lullabies range from three-part Welsh carols to the overtone-tinted wooden flute of Chris Norman on "Now I Am Asleep" to several showings for acoustic harp that highlight vocals by singers such as Jill Rogoff and Ann Mayo Muir. The unfortunate trend of globetrotting CDs that lose all their geographic specificity is easily bucked here with songs sung in Manx Gaelic and the more familiar Irish. The set even takes into account the farthest reaches of the Celtic diaspora by including a religious Nova Scotian melody with mother Mary singing to the baby Jesus, "Tha mi 'g altrum Righ na Mòrachd" ("I am nursing the Almighty King," for all you non-Gaelic speakers). The blurred edges throughout this selection move toward sonic dreaminess, made more warmly vaporous by the pillowing effect of the instrumental accompaniments. --Andrew Bartlett

sounds of japan.......2007-01-13
being a lover of good music i was surprised to see this cd. i listened to some of the selections and decided this was an excellent piece for my parents. being of japanese descent i am always looking for music from japan to enhance my cultural appreciation. my parents truly love this cd.
Beautyful relaxing CD.......2006-03-16
I used this cd while massaging patients in a local hospital. Everyone just loved it.I bought extra for family. Just Great!
The Enchanted Forest: Melodies of Japan.......2005-10-22
I would not rate this the very best James Galway CD but it does contain the best song I have heard him play. Cut #3, Nakasendo (The Old Road) is worth the price of the CD alone. While Hietsuki Bushi (Love Song) and Song of the Deep Forest are also excellent, I never tire of listening to The Old Road. Hiro Fujikake on synthesizers combined with the flute of James Galway makes this a very pleasing collection of music.
a posie placed on a political border.......2002-05-19
I don't DISLIKE this cd, but really it is a poor interpretation of Japanese flute music. It sounds more like an uninspired Enya clone than traditional Japanese music. No matter how many times I listened to it, it never could really interest me enough to be more of my life than another cd in my scrapped CD's pile.
a touch of the irish.......2002-05-11
no need to compare rampal to galway,, two masters here, and on this cd, galway continues to demonstrate his tremendous talent and world wide appeal. without rampal , he is now the worlds greatest flautist , period

Album Description
Rediscover the magic - Become filled with exquisite beauty as you journey into a mystical land of dreams. This new collaboration from bestselling composer Gary Stadler (Fairy HeartMagic) and Australian vocalist Wendy Rule leads you through landscapes of forest, deep into the heart of nature. Those who are familiar with Gary's previous albums will recognize the soulful beauty of his piano based soundscapes. To this Gary now adds artful Cello, Uilleann Pipes, and classical guitar. Combine that with the magical voice and gentle guitar of Australian singer/songwriter Wendy Rule and the lovely Celtic harp of Lisa Lynne, and the result is absolutely breathtaking. While their music can be compared to Enya or Loreena Mckennitt, they have crafted their own special style. Come along with them on this serene and spellbinding journey, as images of the ancient Celtic Faerie realm come alive once more and touch you with enchantment.

Disappointed.......2006-08-29
I was hoping for more of an ethereal sound. The CD isn't bad, just not what I expected.
Spellbinding.......2006-02-26
I absolutely LOVE this album. It is magical, spellbinding, and very calming. My grandson, age 6, also loves the CD. It is his and my favorite CD, and we play it often.
The fairies are closer than ever now.......2005-03-18
Beautiful, magical album that really sends my consciousness to dance with fairies and gets me dreaming of living in a green woods with lovely people around. For the one who was blaming the album I would say that you yourself are a freak, because your senses are so dull that you can't feel this magic anymore. And if you ask enlightened people, they say that fairies exist, but only in the right side of a brain... So only your feminine, intuitive part can see the fairies, and ghosts and other spirits that co-exist in another dimension parallel to our own. Small children can also see them. But if you live too much in your head you can't feel any of these things...
The artists in this records sure have experienced themselves and they share it in such a beautiful way that brings tears of gratitude to my eyes. So maximum respect to them!
Brilliant........2005-01-24
This is the most "Gothic" or "dark" sounding album of Stadler's. I'm not familliar with Rule's other work, but this disk is my favourite of the Faerie series. It's absolutely gorgeous, with transcendental musick and divine near-operetic aethereal vocals atop. She does sound like a Fae queen. I would recommend this to anyone who embraces the more dark side of Fae; someone big on introspection and meditation. This is a great release.. thanks you guys for such a gift.

Here's an album that will produce Zzzs over fidgety, fretful little foreheads faster than you can piece together the second verse of "Hush Little Baby," and it will satisfy grownups in search of meditation music that's not too drippy. Close your eyes for Cesar Berlanga's peaceful, reassuring "Todo Ya Esta en Calma" (from Spain) or Steve Gorn's instrumental "Saraswati's Dream" (India), with its whispery bamboo flute and Dobros, and it's déjà vu, not just tranquility, that washes over you. Isn't this the same gorgeous stuff that transported you far from your troubles last time you indulged in aromatherapy? As with other titles in the series, a booklet complete with lyric translations, thoughtful commentary on each track, and the artist's e-mail address slips into its own attractively designed cardboard sleeve. The record's intended bragging point, of course, is its reach. A dozen or so languages deliver a single message--that music has the power to put us in touch with our nurturing sides. --Tammy La Gorce

Most beautiful cd ever.......2006-11-10
Love love love this cd and have given it to all my friends who have children!
This CD is astoundingly Beautiful.......2003-03-09
What a jewel in the crown of Children's music. You just have to hear the song "Dormi, Dormi" and you will be hooked. It is just exquisitely beautiful. I have several CDs in this series, but this one takes the prize. This one and Papa's Lullaby are my favorites. GET THEM!
Not just for the little ones!.......2003-02-26
Although the word Lullaby might be connected with putting the young ones to bed, this collection of soothing bed-time music will appeal to all who desire a warm earthy soundscape to relex to. Hats off once again to Jeff & Russell Charno at Ellipsis Arts.
This is one of the best albums of any kind............2003-01-27
One of the best albums I have bought in many, many months. Saw it at ..., with several others in the series, and it spoke to me. The guy behind the counter played it for me and I had goosebumps from the first note. What a wonderful listening CD. I did not know it was a kids album until I got it home and read the back of the cover. Delicious, soft, world music. Your baby will be unable to resist the gentle whisper of these gorgeous melodies. As an adult, even more appreciative. Hats off to the company who put these out. How about an adult series??!!
Beautiful lullabys from around the world.......2003-01-27

Album Description
Celtic Lullaby
A collection of traditional lullabies from Ireland, Scotland, Wales & beyond to coax, cuddle and caress a child to sleep. Ethereal and enduring, each of these cradle songs has a melody that delights and lingers within the listener. The Boston globe called this compilation the sleeper of the year because as soothing as these songs are to a child, they will also satisfy and please a parent. Harps, whistles, mandolins and flutes create crystalline textures, and the Gaelic lyrics and translations provided give insight into linguistic rhythms, shades of meaning, and even historical references.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful cd.......2006-07-15
If your fascinated by string and flute instruments you will love this cd. The singers do the lullaby's plenty of justice. If your like Waldorf style learning you'll defitnitely enjoy it.
Lovely.......2005-03-16
I got this originally because of the first song on the CD, "Night, Night." I found that the sample I heard of this song helped to get rid of headaches that I was getting at the time. I being able to listen to the whole song, as well as the others, have helped me to be able to relax. This is especially important to me now that I am in college, which we all know can be very stressful. Therefore, I recommend this for not only babies and young children, for anyone who needs to relax.
My 6 1/2 year old Baby Boy Scot still loves this, as do we.......2005-01-23
He's had this CD for several years, I'm buying yet another copy. He has a wide variety of music, mostly Classical, Celtic and fun kid type, but this is surely one of his favorites.
Buy this for beautiful melodies, a variety of instruments, fine and interesting voices in different languages that are strangely compelling. If you have a Celt heritage, especially, buy this for the the children and for yourself.
Learning to sing in Welsh.......2004-11-12
I asked for this disk as an afterthought. I did not realize that I would listen to it roughly 3,000 times. My husband didn't believe the soothing affect this disc had until he was in the car with us. I'm of Irish background, so the dark, disturbing lyrics don't bother me and if you're of celtic extraction they won't bother you either = you'll be used to them by now. The baby *sleeps* and I am happy.
Disappointed.......2003-12-11
I just ordered this CD and was really disappointed. The whole CD starts out with this really creepy sounding "Night night sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite and if they do, squeeze them tight so they won't come another night". That put me off, right there. Gross.
The CD is lacking and there are much better Irish songs.
Annoying to spend the money and get this.

another fabulous album by Kim Robertson.......2004-12-17
As usual, Kim has combined her unique, non-pedestrian arrangements, wonderful musicality and fabulous technical performance to give us another great Christmas album. I bought a half dozen of these to give as early Christmas presents. Everyone I have given it to has worn "grooves" in it - they won't even get in their cars without taking it with them. Thanks Kim for another fabulous musical offering.

Frank Patterson is an Irish tenor in the grand tradition of John McCormack and Josef Locke. God Bless America! is a live recording of a concert he performed in tribute to his adopted country. The songs range from traditional Irish tunes like "The Star of the County Down" and "The Spinning Wheel" to sentimental music-hall ballads like "Mother Machree" and "The Rose of Tralee." He also sings the inevitable "O Solo Mio" (is there a tenor born who can resist it?) and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Music of the Night." Patterson is joined on a number of tunes by his wife, Eily O'Grady, and her Irish Harp Orchestra. Patterson is an unabashedly emotional singer who wrings the last teardrop out of chestnuts like "Danny Boy," but he does it in such a charming manner that his performances never descend into kitsch. --Michael Simmons

Oh Hush Thee, My Little Brown Bird.......2005-02-24
The liner notes to this CD open with an Old Irish legend of a magical harp Uaithne who gave birth to three children. Each symbolized a different type of music on the harp. The first was Goltrai, born with a song of weeping. The second Geantrai, born with a tune of joy. The third was Suantrai, whose song was the lullaby. This CD is devoted to this last type of music-a collection of traditional Celtic lullabies to soothe both child and adult to sleep.
Margie Butler has a light touch on the harp, and a suitably sweet and light vocal style to match. I won't claim Margie's voice is the most compelling I've ever heard-but it is ideal for this kind of music. Those who are used to more professional, polished voices may find it a bit thin. The accompaniment remains well balanced against the vocals, each supporting the other. This is true lullaby music-there are no large band productions or massive soundscapes to confront. It is private music, played in a small room for a few people at most. Meant to soothe and send to sleep. The overall arrangement and performance is simple and Spartan. The melodies are played primarily on the harp, as in keeping with the theme of this collection. The harps used are the caswell "Journey" and the Rydecki "Luthian", both played by Margie herself. The other additions are mostly traditional instruments, penny whistle, guitar, accordion, violin, cymbalom and triangle. Listeners who like the ambient style Celtic music with electronically created sounds may be disappointed-but it will be listening pleasure for those who seek pure acoustic accompaniment.
The songs included on this CD are all traditional tunes arranged by Margie Butler, with the exception of "Deep in My Heart," which was written by Paul Espinoza. Instrumental selections are interspersed between the vocals. Particularly enjoyable is the brief but lovely "Gaelic Lullaby". Listeners familiar with Irish music may recognize some of their favorites. The vocal compositions are likewise delightful. Old-style phrasing and pronunciation in songs such as "Baloo Baleerie" really evoke the Celtic style. For example, the line"Gang awa' peerie faeries." More esoteric words are noted in the liner notes so that the reader can understand the reference. The song selections themselves are simple, often with crooning refrains. These are perfect for rocking a baby to sleep, or playing in the background to banish insomnia. My personal favorites are "Dereen Day" and "The Eagle's Whistle".
Lullaby collectors might also check out SLEEP MY CHILD a CD of Jewish Lullaby Songs and PLANET SLEEPS a compilation of lullabies from around the world. Those who like traditional Celtic music may want to find SILVER APPLES OF THE MOON by Ceoltori.
Happy Listening! ^_^ Shanshad
Sleep like a baby.......2004-03-20
This CD has a great selection of Celtic songs, both with lyrics and instrumental. The selections are soft, calming and have the desired effect for babies and children: sleep. You need not be Irish to enjoy this CD.
