Linus & Lucy: The Music Of Vince Guaraldi
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
While Vince Guaraldi's piano playing and composing have had a big influence on George Winston's work, there is little sense of direct imitation in this affecting tribute to the man who composed the memorable music for the television specials based on cartoonist Charles M. Schultz's Peanuts characters. Winston's solo piano style is fuller and more reflective than Guaraldi's, a hearty blend of powerful chords and subdued rhythms. It seems to embrace Guaraldi's tunes, both the Peanuts songs, like the title tune and "You're in Love, Charlie Brown," and Guaraldi's other music, like "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" and "Monterey," which seems to blend somber tones with an almost luminous quality. The warmth, wit, and whimsy here evoke memories of the best work of Guaraldi and Schultz. --Adam Rains

From Amazon.ca
Toronto's Sophie Milman has that rare ability to appeal to two often deeply separated worlds: those who like their jazz light and those purists who want their jazz heavy and nothing short of it. By having a more-than-capable traditional jazz band and challenging herself vocally to bring the swing, she has commanded respect from both camps. Milman's delivery is silky smooth, a gorgeous voice with a low register reminiscent of Fiona Apple and an upper register that brings Ella Fitzgerald's bounce and playfulness to mind. Like many jazz vocal discs, her sophomore release Make Someone Happy contains an abundance of covers, but some rather surprising in style. The often-done "Fever"'s arrangement is nothing like the original, containing more of an unnerving musical undercurrent than the traditional sultry one. Milman--who recorded this disc in her early 20s--covers a number of underdone melodies, from Stevie Wonder's "Rocket Love" to the Guess Who's "Undun" with composer/original band guitarist Randy Bachman offering his sonic inflections to the song. Disc high points include the smokin' jam "It Might As Well Be Spring," the sexy bossa nova of original track "Something in the Air Between Us" and the beautiful cover of "Eli, Eli" by Second World War Holocaust hero and poet Hannah Senesh. It is a brave and haunting number that Milman does great justice to. --Denise Sheppard
Product Description
Sophie Milman's new album "Make Someone Happy" is an album for lovers. From Stevie Wonder's "Rocket Love" to Rogers & Hammerstein's "People Will Say We're in Love", almost every song has a connection to the joy and drama of a new relationship. Highly anticipated by her fans whose rabit appreciation for the young Russian born Israeli Canadian drove her first album to the top of the iTunes Jazz charts in Canada, the USA, France, Japan, and Sweden, "Make Someone Happy" showcases an artist coming into her own, destined for international stardom.

Wonderful.......2007-06-11
Linus & Lucy: The Music Of Vince Guaraldi, by George Winston, can best be summed up in one word... joy. This CD is a joy to listen to. I was familiar with the music of Vince Guaraldi and the Vince Guaraldi Trio only in that I heard it as the background music of the wonderful Peanuts shows. George Winston provides his own excellent updates on the Guaraldi classics, and introduces a new generation to this classic music. Listening to this CD, at any time of the year, is a joyous experience. It is a 5 star CD.
Love this CD, anytime of the year..........2007-03-24
Just wonderful and can't help loving Linus and Lucy, childhood flashback to watching Charlie Brown!
PURE MAGIC!.......2007-02-14
When I was 14, my grandmother got me this albulm for Christmas. I was quite unenthused at the time as I had no interest in piano music. Regardless, I popped it into my cd player a couple days later, not expecting much. During track 9, (a moment I will never forget) my life actually changed forever. His boogie woogie improvisations BLEW MY MIND in a very litteral sense.
The sound was so rich and amazing that the room got really bright (I think because my pupils dialated), I turned the volume way up and just pressed my head against my boom-box and I started uncontrollably laughing and crying at the same time. It felt like I was going mad, but it was just the first time I had ever been high on musical extasy.
I am now a 22 year old musician, and this is still the greatest solo piano albumm I have ever heard, and my most enduering favorite. This album broke me out of my pop music rut and started my life-long passion for jazz and classical music.
Buy this album for someone, especially if they're narrow minded when it comes to music. You might just change their life!
Great Service - Good Deal.......2006-11-13

Winston/Guaraldi.......2006-10-02
MariaS and Srayle, if you like the Guaraldi original then keep it and chuck the Winston, Personally, I think the Winston performance is refreshing and a delightful 'twist' on Guaraldi's works. The piano is brillaint sounding and at volume, thru a good system sounds like there's a piano in the room. It should be emphatically understood, you are buying Winston in this case, and not Guaraldi. I have both versions.

Customer Reviews:
An important part of any Gordon Lightfoot collection.......2006-06-08
If you have followed Gordon Lightfoot's music, this collection of songs rings true for a career that has lasted over forty years. The Title song "Harmony" draws you into Gordon's musical, life essence retrospective.
The most memorable songs move from temporary or perhaps permanent loss of powers (Harmony) to overcoming regrets and desparation and carrying on with some dignity (Shellfish) to a brilliant and timeless love song (Inspiration Lady).
I think Gordon was just having some fun on Couchiching (a song about his hometown), and the Hotel No. I'll sometimes listen to these for a lighthearted break from some of the more serious songs on this collection.
To the barbed criticism of another reviewer, I respond that "this is a comeback album from a near fatal illness." There are few singer-songwriters who have this kind of resiliance. Gordon is a Folk artist, and if one does not think his vocals are as pretty or macho or sexy as they were on Sundown, then they're missing the point. "Harmony" is about looking back at life and carrying on in the face of time. Listen to Shellfish (another prime track on this CD), specifically "There's still a way to go, about a thousand miles or so." Why do some people not want to hear that, or a most extraordinary voice that has been impacted by a near death experience?
There are tales and experiences in life that are the product of age and experience that are tempered by weariness and frailty and transcendent hope. That's what this set of songs is about. "Harmony - if you pass me by I will miss you, and if you can cry I can cry too. Harmony - have you gone away, have you gone to stay?" This is the gentle lament accompanied by old faded Martin that still sounds sweet.
There's nothing wrong with buying collections and "greatest hits," but to understand and appreciate Mr. Lightfoot, you should follow his timeline album by album (or CD by CD). It is a journey worth taking and "Harmony" is in its own right a key entry in our Canadian friend's brilliant contribution to folk and folk-pop-country music.
Wow, no wonder this is # 108,080 on amazon.com.......2006-05-08
Sorry, the musical part is tolerable but his voice died years ago. This is not the Gord I have come to love and enjoy. Nothing new in the way of classical Gord songwriting, so I was sorry to add this to my collection. He needs to give it up.
Still amazing after all these years.......2004-08-26
I was first introduced to Gordon's work in 1967 by a friend whose family summered not very far from Orillia. I have listened and loved the man and his work all this time. When I first heard Harmony, I thought it was a good album considering how it was put together. The more I have listened, the more I have been amazed. His lyrics still send chills and speak to the heart and mind. The music goes hand in hand with those well-crafted words. In many ways, I think this is one of the best albums he has given us. It truly is a gift. Thank you, Gordon.

Pretty good.......2006-09-10
Ok first off, I've only heard a couple of Ashley's other songs. I'm new to him. I love Celtic music and just found out about him. The Celtic songs I've heard are great. I decided to get this since it's a rock album. It has it's good and bad points. His vocals aren't great, but they seem very emotional to me and I like that. There is a very good range of music styles from punk to rock to blues to country witch I also like. The songs that jump out at me are "Bitch" and "Because I love you" especially the latter. They are just so emotional to me and I can totally identify with them. The part I can live without is the gay crap, but hey each to his own. With all that being said. I do prefer the great fiddle player he seems to be.
Listen before you buy.......2006-08-26
Ashley MacIsaac should have stuck with Scotish/Celtic music. I do not recommend this CD to those who enjoyed his previous works.
Ashley Explodes.......2006-05-14
Ashley MacIsaac's self-titled Decca CD was one of my favorites with "Lay Me Down" becoming one of my all-time classic tracks. This set rocks out with Ashley giving the finger on the inner cover announcing that he's no longer Mr. Nice Guy. "Bitch" rocks mercilessly followed by "Just Because" that also pulses furiously. "Love 'Em" burns with sensation without regard to being tidy or polite, "I dance with the Tommies; I wear my pajamies." "Because You Love Me" is another staunch rocker with Ashley's vocals, all sass and no apology. Not until "Revolution," the 7th track, does MacIsaac slow even a tad with this washboard melody country parody. "You took the gun from my head & you took the fun from my bed," MacIsaac sings on "Nights Wasted Away" in a Stonesy burner. "A Man Like You" is a love song with the Ashley's vocals worn and weary, "I would take you in my arms; you would do the same; We could be as free as love, supposed to feel this way." "Because I Love You" is the first openly acoustic track, confessional in tone, before MacIsaac explodes dramatically, "Why do you make me want to see you die; I wanna kill you. Do you think you can play me for a fool? ... I know the Golden Rule." The set ends up with "Sick of Rock & Roll." MacIsaac's "Pride" is starkly different from his other work, excellent on its own merits, rough and frayed without pretense. It's a great set if you can stand it! Bravo!
Not his usual fare, but not to be dismissed........2006-04-13
Honestly, I enjoy MacIsaac's singing voice as much as I enjoy his fiddle playing. His voice reminds me of Rob Dougan's-- A bit rough with a raw quality that evokes a visceral reaction in the listener-- and I've found that the music on this album can go with me in the car, in my office, or when I'm out walking. Perhaps my appreciation of it has been influenced by my admiration for MacIsaac and his courage in making an album that is so different from anything else he's produced, but I think this album has its own merits and I liked it just as much as his other musical endeavors.
A Bold Move that hits and misses.......2006-03-28
"Bitch" opens the album of new material by famous gay in a kilt Ashley MacIsaac, and it indicates that this album is going to be a strange departure indeed. Considering what I am used to hearing from him... more classical than grunge, this is a bold departure... kind of punk meets... well, anti-melody.
That said, Bitch is nothing to scoff at. The song, after multiple listens is quite catchy (and in my car stereo it actually is pump worthy)
I particualrly enjoy "Just Because" which seems to borrow its melody from the likes of the Bravery and a lyrical style from Ashlee Simpson. As a matter of fact, most of the writing on this release seems to be a tad bit teen-ish and considering it has a "parental advisory" sticker slapped on it, that isn't really a good thing.
The thing I really like about "Pride" is that the voice that made me like him in the first place (heard on "Lay Me Down" from his self titled album) pops up throughout the album. He does not have a conventional pop-rock voice and perhaps that is one reason he is being dissed by other reviewers. But I have to say that I enjoy that voice and while it seems like he strains to get the notes out... it is a strain that I find endearing and entertaining. This album is no masterpiece, but with a few sprinkles of glittery fun and a gothic tinged "Because I Love You", this album is not a complet waste in my collection. It is a bold departure from the celtic intrumental he has enchanted many with... and I hope he continues to branch out and polish his edge (and improve those ltrics... stat). This album is not for everyone... note it is heavily influenced by punk and alternative rock... but for someone like me who has an ecclectic taste in music, this is fun spin for sure.
