This anthology of children-related tracks originates from the globally conscious Putamayo Records catalog. Artists from Africa (Senegal's Touré Kunda, Congo's Ricardo Lemvo), Europe (France's Manu Chao), the Caribbean (Jamaica's Cedella Marley Booker), North America (Buckwheat Zydeco and Eric Bibb from the U.S.; Canada's Teresa Doyle), South America (Brazil's Nazaré Pereira), and Australia (Trevor Adamson) offer tracks, and while the styles and moods vary, the album gels excellently. Even if the multicontinent angle strikes you as too catholic, it bears reiterating that this is a "playground" session, a collection that begins with a Senegalese in-line dance and continues through "Mardi Gras Mambo," a bongo-playing French monkey, and much more. And while the songs are playful, there's nothing in the way of tossed-off music. It's all first-rate, with the artists at the top of their games. --Andrew Bartlett

Putumayo's Playground series consistently lives up to its name by sending far-flung cultures out to recess, freeing them to reveal their musical fun sides. The metaphor ends there, but the parallel to actual playgrounds doesn't: as any parent who's felt forlorn at times knows, nothing nullifies a dreary afternoon funk more effectively than a trip to the neighborhood playground. So it goes with the series. Animal Playground, the latest to swing, slide, and see-saw its way into agile imaginations of all ages, is a fine-tuned creature feature as playful as a giant-pawed puppy. Even if you don't know what forro is (North Brazilian dance music), or that "Cantigo do Sapo" has something to do with a little singing frog, you'll want to shake a tail feather in time to the beat; that holds for Quartetto Cetra's right-on Italian reworking of "Old McDonald," "Nella Vecchia Farroria." No disrespect to the other exotic offerings here ("Aves," from Honduras, for example), but the English-language songs are most winning of all: Canada's the Be Good Tanyas captivate with "The Littlest Birds," and you can't help but a love a man who cries crocodile tears from his puppy dog eyes, in this case Jon Langford who, when he's not a Wee Hairy Beastie belting out "Animal Crackers," leads the excellent punk/folk band the Mekons. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous songs, but..........2007-06-17

I love this album. I bought it for my daughter (who LOVES the other Putumayo
CDs that she has) and have found myself listening to it without her. "The Littlest Birds" compelled me to order a The Be Good Tanyas album and the "wee bear" in "The Three Little Bears" is adorable. I guess that my only issue with it is that it is sort of a stretch to call all of these songs "animal" songs. For instance, is a dinosaur REALLY an animal. Not REALLY. While all of the songs feature an animal in them, not all of the songs are ABOUT animals. But is is a great album.

My daughter and niece love this CD. They want to hear it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Bought this for my son today, but I love it!.......2007-01-17

I found this in a grocery store of all places and bought it on a whim. My 13 month old likes it, but even if he didn't, I love it! I "car danced" all the way home! It is so up tempo, it's the perfect driving CD and I've got it in the house now to clean to. It's a little traditional African, a little dance club, a little disco but it totally works. Can't wait to check out the other CDs in this collection.

5 out of 5 stars love the rhythm.......2007-01-10

My baby and I LOVE the captivating rhythms of this music. You can't help but get up and dance along!

2 out of 5 stars Was OK.......2007-01-05

I expected a lot more, so I was mildly disappointed. There were a least 3 songs that I kept in constant replay.

5 out of 5 stars Great! It's the only thing that stops my son from crying in the car!.......2006-11-03

I put on the music, and he either smiles or sleeps. Can't beat that!

What a welcome change this collection is! Completely free of the arch, cloying ickiness that sometimes informs even the most well-intentioned kids' music offerings, these tunes may well help create a vanguard of pint-sized, sophisticated (in the best sense of the word!) world citizens. While not all of the selections were originally composed with this market in mind, the music is nonetheless delightfully child-appropriate in content, rhythmic bounciness and melodic saturation. The producers have rightly assumed that youngsters are small but sentient beings whose developing tastes and interests need to be engaged and encouraged. The styles employed evoke a nostalgic yet ultra-contemporary enfant boulevardier's world of cafés, bicyclettes with bells, bals musette and le jazz hot, so that parents will also be charmed and not find themselves left out of the experience, or worse, rolling their eyes and diving for cover. The songs not only reflect daily life as encountered by children living in France but accurately portray that nation's modern cultural melting pot -- where immigrants and visitors from Africa, the Caribbean and North America, regardless of encroaching ultra-right isolationism, have indelibly graced the national consciousness with their own traditions and dialects. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Great music! Upbeat and lively!.......2007-03-08

We listen to this CD all the time. I like that it has english and french lyrics enclosed and the music is really upbeat and lively.

5 out of 5 stars Well produced, fun music for everyone.......2007-01-19

I am trying to teach my kids French, and was looking for some fun music beyond the nursery rhyme stage. This definately exceeded my expectations. We all love it, the kids are singing the words, the music is wonderful. There is a nice variety of French music explored.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite cd of all.......2007-01-03

My four and one half grandson and I love this cd. He has many cds but this one was an instant hit. We both sing and dance to it and look at each other and say "this is my favorite song" so often that they are all our favorites. We don't know french but he sings along anyway and we "get" the music. It's fabulous and I listen to it when he is not here too. It is so happy that I'd recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Sympa!.......2006-11-09

A mon avis, c'est une excellente collection. Catchier, more upbeat and more consistently appealing than other Putumayo French music collections, in my opinion. I pop it in and can't help but sing along. I teach French (KG-6th grades) and my students enjoy it too. The lyrics are clever. I don't know what that one reviewer was talking about.

5 out of 5 stars fun for baby and adult.......2006-08-18

My 10 mo and I both love this cd - unlike most childens music, I can listen to it every morning and not run screaming from the house... and I think its helped with my french pronunciation as well :)

3 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2007-04-13

The music is good, but the songs listed on the case aren't in the same order as the songs on the CD. Plus the number of songs on the CD are not the same as the number on the case. I called Putumayo, but they had no response.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-03-11

Wonderful CD---my baby girl and I listen to it all the time. You really can't go wrong with any of the Putumayo music collections!

5 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air!.......2007-03-09

I work in a daycare, and I decided to buy this album to use as background music in my classroom while the kids are having their free-play time. It really is a nice change of pace from the typical kid songs you might hear. The kids love it, and I do too! =) Definitely highly recommended for teachers and parents who are looking for music that is fun and kid-friendly, but still enjoyable for adults as well.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing yet upbeat, the perfect intro to island music.......2006-12-12

Putomayo Kids don't bill themselves as "World Music Adventures" for nothing. This CD transported me right back to Negril, Jamaica, circa 1994, sand between my toes...but that was back before I had kids to enjoy reggae music with, and as progressive as I like to consider myself, I never thought to dig out my reggae sounds for them...until now. Reggae Playground is a favorite in our house, and no wonder! Look who's on this album, among others:

Judy Mowatt (former backing vocalist for the man himself, Mr. Bob Marley)
Rita Marley
Toots & the Maytals
Burning Souls
Johnny Dread
Marty Dread
Tony Q Rastafara, and
Asheba (known for his Caribbean kid songs)
Let me assure you, however, this is no randomly compiled reggae album thrown together from your average adult collection - it's made for kids, and it pleases! I may be a little biased since I love the French language, and there are a couple on this CD plus a little Creole added in for good measure. Unlike some, I think the remake of The Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" is inspired. My kids' favorite, however, is "There's a Mouse in the House."

I like the truly youthful choice of songs, styles, and lyrics. This CD is relaxing yet upbeat, a perfect introduction to island music from the masters themselves.

5 out of 5 stars May the summer never end!.......2006-07-17

The kids love it and I actually listen to it after I drop them off at camp on my way to work! It's different from the teeny bop Disney stuff that they like but can drive me crazy. Our favorite is "There's a Mouse in my House and I'm Scared!" We are all grooving our way through the summer... I'm even stocking up on this CD for the next round of birthday parties. And the nice thing is some of the proceeds go to children's educational programs.

Before you stomp around a Putumayo playground, park your preconceived notions at the picnic bench. The label may not set the world-music crowd on fire with its regular releases, but this series, aimed at kids but translating up, sizzles. Latin Playground's party gets started with a wind-you-up traditional Cuban number (Omara Portuondo's "Guantanamera") and from there traverses North, South, and Central America, making stops in Mexico City, Colombia, the American Tejano region, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico. There are sample wacko lyrics ("The day will come when I will leave you / Because you smell like the armadillo," from Lila Downs's "Hanal Weech"), unexpected instrumentation (accordions punch up the polka flavoring of Flaco Jiminez's conjunto, "De Bolon Pin Pon"), and not a whiff of what's expected from the latest slice off a music education program--even the informative, engaging liner notes are gentle gatekeepers to a land of rhythms everybody wants to get into and get down with. Forget the kids--see if you can make it through Cubanismo's "Mardi Gras Mambo," Nazare Pereira's "Rodopiou," and Carmen Gonzalez's "Chocolate" without waving a set of air maracas or busting into a booty-shaking session to make Ricky Martin blush. --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Really nice!.......2005-12-28

I bought this CD for my son (he is from Guatemala) in an effort to keep him exposed to Latin music. I like this CD very much. The performers have nice voices and the music is professional sounding (I have bought other latin CD's that sounded like they were recorded in someone's garage).

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of music for anyone.......2007-06-19

First off, Amazon needs to fix the album title to have "Putumayo Kids Presents" so it'll show up when you are searching through the series.

A great, great CD. Our 15 month old loves it and unlike some other kids albums I don't sick of hearing these songs. It includes recordings from over a 50 year span and they are all very, very fun. I really wouldn't even say this is "children's music". This really is just a collection of great music that children should enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars New Orleans kids music.......2007-05-07

I bought this after hearing it at Gymboree Play Gym. It reminds me of my childhood in NO. Lots of fun songs that both kids and adults will enjoy. Fav: "They all aksed for you" by The Meters.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you get up and dance!.......2007-02-10

The music on this cd is great!! We bought this for my 2 1/2 year old son a couple of weeks ago. My husband and me love it as much as he does. We have raised my son on music and we have a lot of cds, including: Laurie Berkner, Dan Zanes, a lot of Music Together, Wee Sing, Kathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Raffi, David Leinhardt (Which is also excellent, he does a great jazz rendetion of This Old Man). New Orleans Playground is currently our favorite cd to play, we can't get enough of it. My son marches around singing "Oh When the Saints Go Marching In" with great gusto!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is one for the whole family, grandma and all!.......2006-12-12

New Orleans Playgroun is a collection of classic New Orleans favorites that demonstrate to children the complexity and variety of music from the Creole and Cajun cultures. The vibrant, colorful atmosphere of southern Louisiana is apparent in these lively tracks and the upbeat tunes appeal naturally to kids. New Orleans Playgroun is an enjoyable way to teach young children about New Orleans culture, unique musical instruments, and American music history.

Some of the songs introduce youngsters to musicians from an earlier generation with a focus on the 1920s and 1950s. Parents and grandparents will enjoy listening to Fats Domino and Chris Kenner with little ones. Despite the fact the music is fast and jazzy, it is still easy for young children to sing along. Children are bound to get hooked on the catchy lyrics and simple rhythms. Listening to this CD is a fun way for children to learn about American music, and the songs on New Orleans Playgroun, are authentic representations that kids of all ages can appreciate. Personally, I've enjoyed listening to New Orleans Playground for several nights in a row.

The songs are more adventurous than juvenile, with the innovative vocals on Clarence "Frogman" Henry's "Ain't Got No Home" and the smacking lips on Fats Domino's "Whole Lotta Lovin." In "Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner" listeners are treated to a wonderful performance by Kermit Ruffins with his daughters, Christina and Neshia. There is also a plucky blues version of "Row Row Your Boat" by Dr. John and the CD finishes with the timeless "When the Saints Go Marchin' In," a hallmark of New Orleans jazz parades.

By purchasing New Orleans Playground adults also have the opportunity to teach children about philanthropy and charitable giving. Sales from New Orleans Playground will be donated to the Louisiana Children's Museum in support of a New Orleans music exhibit.-Elizabeth Whitmore

Product Description

This CD features fun songs from many of America's leading children's musicians and other well-known artists. Years ago people used to get together with family and friends to make music. Gathered around the fireplace or sitting on the front porch, people of all ages would pull out instruments ans sing traditional songs that had been passed down from previous generations. This is the very essence of folk music, and its legacy continues on with Folk Playground. Some of the songs included are Hop Up Ladies, Froggie Went a-Courtin', and It's All How You Look At It.

Amazon.com

Putumayo's consistently top-drawer producers probably encountered fewer obstacles combing the globe for exotic artists to include in their World Playground disc than in concocting excitement over Folk Playground. For one thing, Dan Zanes has been cranking out excellent folk-flavored records for kids alongside his battalion of big-name friends for years--even though he's included here ("Hop Up Ladies"), he's still tough competition. There's also the still-relevant (and superb) kids' folk discs Circle Game: Folk Music for Kids and A Child's Celebration of Folk Music to slow demand. Finally, you can't blame a parent for being reluctant to fork over more money for a folk disc when he'd just as soon share his old Dylan discs or Bruce Springsteen's recent We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions. That Folk Playground plays like a vital addition to any kids' collection, then, says a lot about this label's ability to distill even the most meandering of genres. Part of it, as with every disc in the Playground series, is the packaging: Not only is it pretty to look at and flip-friendly, each song arrives with a breezy, un-boring explanation. But the music speaks loudest. Standouts on a disc that doesn't shy away from regional folk strands include Eric Bibb's soul-steeped "Just Look Up," Elizabeth Mitchell's gorgeously honest-sounding "Crawdad," Leon Redbone's grown-up sounding "Polly Wolly Doodle," and the Zanes track. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars good for all ages.......2007-03-08

My 17 month old son and I both love this album! His favorites include Got No Strings (which he recognizes as the "cuckoo" song), his buddy Dan Zanes with Hop Up Ladies, and the Crawdad song. Mommy's favorite is the Sheep song, which she keeps finding herself humming (and, all right, dancing to) at work! After heavy rotation in the car, it still hasn't shown its wear, and has opened us up to many wonderful new artists. This is a winner!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful and fun .......2007-01-13

my daughters loved all the songs on this, (especially the great sheep song), we went out and bought it for a nephew after her heard ours and he loved it too. We always sing along in the car!!! Michelle Shocked has always been an adult favorite, and her "got no strings" hooked my girls, made us look for the entire childrens album she made.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-06-30

High quality productions, accomplished artists, fun songs! My grandchildren and I are thoroughly enjoying this CD.

Product Description

This CD is a joyous celebration of Caribbean music and culture that will delight children and adults. It includes songs such as All Aboard (Trinidad), Train is Coming (Jamaica), and Little Anancy (Trinidad).

Amazon.com

Caribbean Playground is a sun-dappled disc that jigsaws the region into eight bright musical pieces, each with a surprisingly distinct sound.

Reggae dominates, getting its rub-a-dub-roasted warmth across by way of "Three Little Birds," "Jamaica Farewell," and others, but it doesn't drown out Trinidadian soca, Puerto Rican bomba, or Haiti's lovely, acoustic-heavy twoubadou. Add to that the vocal magnetism of a lot of these artists--Taj Mahal and the Wailers among them--and Putumayo's expected above-the-call packaging, and you get a CD that's cooler than a Kingston street fair, only easier on little kid ears (and lungs). -Tammy La Gorce

fun carribean songs- easy for adults to listen to as well as kids

4 out of 5 stars Putumayo music.......2007-01-06

I bought this for a friend of Barbadan descent. She wants her daughter to know the type of music from her culture.
This is great (not my type of music but then it wasn't for me!! I listened to the local library copy). Hence only the four stars.

All the tunes are well thought out, accurately represent the culture the particular cd focuses on and they're upbeat enough to capture your young one's attention whilst not becoming a source of annoyance to any adult within listening distance.

Browse their website for the whole range of music.
I own their African Women and African Playground cd's and their Celtic Crossroads cd. All of which are incredibly pleasant to listen to, given that their primary audience is children.

Buy buy buy!! You'll not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Caribbean playground for all ages.......2005-05-31

This award-winning CD highlights Caribbean styles such as Jamaican reggae and ska, Trinidadian soca, Puerto Rican bomba, Haitian twoubadou, zouk from Martinique and Guadeloupe, and Louisiana zydeco, featuring steel drums, marimbas, accordions, banjos, maracas, cowbells, whistles, and washboards! Liner notes are in English, Spanish and French with cultural information, colorful artwork, and musical style, song and artist descriptions. The CD is appropriate for all ages, and especially for music education in elementary grades. Lyrics in English (five songs are sung in Spanish or French) for most of the verses of ten of the twelve songs are available through the Putumayo.com website.

I enjoyed ALL the songs on this CD. It has old favorites like "Jamaica Farewell" and "Coconut Woman" (kids of all ages will love the "co-co-nut" refrain in this one, as well as the roaring "lion"!), in addition to a zydeco version of Bob Marley's classic "Three Little Birds." Kids will also love "Little Anancy," as many are familiar with Anancy/Ananse spider stories from school. And even though I could not understand much of "Bomba Te Traigo Yo" (sung in Spanish) or "Votez Zouk" (sung in French), the addictive beats of bomba and zouk respectively had me dancing around the room! You too will be glad that this CD "brings you bomba" and makes you want to "vote for zouk!"

3 out of 5 stars Nice Compilation.......2005-02-04

Putumayo releases some enjoyable compliation albums, Caribbean Playground included. However, not all the tracks on this collection are strong. This album is worth adding to your collection---but it not one that you'll continue playing over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids!.......2004-11-18

What makes CARIBBEAN PLAYGROUND kid-oriented? Features include its lively, uplifting simple beats, easy lyrics, and focus on songs which demonstrate and sample the diversity of styles within the Caribbean sound.
But don't limit this collection to the playground just because of its title; many an adult - especially those new to the genre - will appreciate the variety, which includes a Louisiana zydeco band influenced by Caribbean culture (Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band).

5 out of 5 stars music to clean house by.......2006-03-03

I like to put on upbeat music when I have to iron or clean house - I reserve Fats Domino for when I have to paste wax the floor - the task becomes fun when I'm listening to Mr. Domino - but for everday "dusting a bit and making an occasional cheese dip" this CD is great fun. I think children would really love it, too.

5 out of 5 stars great intro to world music.......2005-10-03

I bought the first Playground cd and loved it so much, I'm glad they finally made a second. Not only did my children enjoy it, but I found myself buying albums form the various artists represented.

It is a great cd to play in the car while driving your kids around from place to place. They will not only benefit from hearing music but learn a little bit about different cultures through the different languages sung and rhythms produced.

I would recommend buying this and the first cd.

5 out of 5 stars multicultural must - have!.......2004-01-16

I received this as a gift recently. I have never heard of any of the artists on it, but I will tell you it is excellent. The tone of the songs has that "get your blood pumpin'" feeling. All of the songs seem very original to me. They are very heavy on the percussion (some primative) instruments.

1. It would be an excellent CD to showcase different cultures in a music class setting, with a discussion.
2. It would be an excellent CD to listen to, while children use instruments- say for circletime.
3. A creative movement class for children
4. It is also very good for listening to at home with your child.

Listen to each song, then find where it came from on a globe with your children. Some of the songs are in English, but it doesn't really matter what they are saying because each song sounds great. Music brings the world closer together, and this CD really proves that.
