Bananaphone

Though generally thought of as the king of music for the preschool set, Raffi has evolved from being strictly a little kid's performer to being a family entertainer, and it's evident in this 1995 release. More-sophisticated musical arrangements, a broader repertoire, greater vocal versatility, and intricate lyrics make this almost magical musical mix an album for every member of the family. Whether you're more fond of boppin' with "Shake a Toe," joining in a refrain on the bouncy title cut, or relishing in the poignancy of the gentle "Changing Garden of Mr. Bell" and the Native American tribute "First Peoples," there's enough variety here to appeal to a greater audience than Raffi may have enjoyed in the past. --Deborah Moore

From Parents' Choice®
Raffi's first studio children's recording in seven years is a triumphant return, relaxed and playful, with the master's instrumentals and wordplay. The title song is a toe-tapping silly about a "cellular, modular, interactive-odular" phone of surprising versatility. Slow Day is a superb, jazzy ode to laziness. Then Raffi gets soulful in the haunting Changing Garden of Mr. Bell. And he makes up for doing all the verses to Michael Row the Boat Ashore with The Shmenge Polka, his delightful... read more

5 out of 5 stars Keep up the work Raffi.......2007-04-11

I really like Raffi win I was a kid a had some on Cossets Tapes and still remember the memories we had! Raffi is the one for kids!

5 out of 5 stars Raffi for teens and 'tweens?.......2006-11-28

I've had Raffi tapes in my car for 16 years. When my girls became old enough to listen to Radio Disney, they decided that they were too "old" for Raffi, so I set him aside and brought him out again later for my son, now 4 1/2.

I agree that this album appeals to an older audience than some of Raffi's earlier works. My girls recently rediscovered the Bananaphone cassette. My younger daughter and her carpool buddy, both 12 1/2, have made me play "Bananaphone" all the way to school every day for the past 2 weeks. (That two middle schoolers will listen to kids' music should tell you something!) The 16-year-old remembered that "The Gorilla Song" was on the same tape, and I had to circle the block a few times the other night, so we could all (Dad, too!) sing that one over and over.

It's more than nostalgia; several of the Bananaphone songs are just plain FUN (e.g., "Cowlit Night"), and both girls are delighted at picking out all the plays on words they missed when they were younger. They understand the environmental/nature songs at a different level, too. "It's a Gift to Be Simple," an old Shaker hymn, is one of my older daughter's favorites.

There are not too many artists that can interest toddlers and still be fun for adults, teens, and 'tweens, too. I plan to purchase the CD because we are all tired of trying to FWD/REW to the correct songs.

My eyes popped out and I bled after I listened to this song. It's crazy, it's addicting... it's dangerous. Warning too all listeners! THIS IS NOT A "SONG" THIS IS DRUGS FOR KIDS PLAIN AND SIMPLE AND IT WILL KILL THEM

5 out of 5 stars my cellular, BANANULAR PHOOOONE!!!!.......2005-08-15

seriously, "Bananaphone" is a legendary song for good reason now, it's funny as hell! Seriously, who couldn't love a song with lyrics like "it's no baloney, it ain't a phony, my cellular bananular phone!" Seriously awesome. I blasted this driving through my high school parking lot the other day and couldn't have been happier. And humor aside, Raffi actually writes these songs himself as well as the lyrics, so to say he isn't a musician just cause he writes kids stuff is absurd. Other than the humor aspect it's just sweet happy music in a world full of darkness, lies, and George W. Bush. Crank this up and be proud.

4 out of 5 stars Cute, mellow and educational.......2000-07-27

The title song is very catchy, you will find yourself trying to memorize the words to sing to your toddler if your car cassette happens to be broken. My 2-yr old really likes "Michael row the boat ashore," especially the verse where "Jordan's river is chilly and cold..." he rubs his arms and says "BRRRR!"

I liked the "Changing Garden of Mr. Bell," very pretty and touching. Also "C-A-N-A-D-A", lots of information about Canada that is educational and amusing.

The only song my son didn't like was "First People." I can only assume because it has too much talking, not enough singing. But overall, a fun album to own for a toddler.
