Mail Myself to You

The art of the children's song has a special place in folk music, a genre which has always valued sincere communication, simplicity, and the widest definition of community possible. At one level, even a murder ballad like "Tom Dooley" was designed to appeal to the young. John McCutcheon is a children's folk songster par excellence, and here he draws on tunes by Guthrie and Malvina Reynolds, as well as traditionals like "Over in the Meadow" and "Hambone." Accompanied only by guitar and dulcimer, there's a sweet air of whimsy and generosity to these 12 songs, and a fairly infectious delight in the innocence of childhood. --Roy Francis Kasten

the music of my childhood.......2006-02-12
I was reminded of this album tonight, at random, and oh my. Listening to just the song samples here made me cry. This album was my favorite as a child from the age of four, and on for so many years that I eventually wore the tape out completely. It inspired a love of folk music that I retain to this day.
This is children's music at its best, and so good that I daresay even an adult who didn't grow up on it could love it. Some of the songs are old traditionals, given new life, and some more contemporary. All of them are excellent, ranging from lively and even silly to simply beautiful.
I can't recommend this enough. Your children will love it as much as I did.
The Best!.......2003-12-01
My entire family still loves this! When I was 2 years old, I was at a John McCutcheon concert in my town, just a little concert on the courthouse lawn. I fell asleep in my mother's arms and he was moving around the audience playing his fiddle. As he passed me, sleeping, he stopped in the middle on his song and plays me a lullaby, then keeps on playing his song!
A "Tip 'o the Hat" to the USPS.......2003-11-25
It is a real treat that the US Post Office chose McCutcheon's wonderful version of the classic Woodie Guthrie's "Mail Myself to You" as their theme song in the 2003 Christmas Television commercials. I hope the entire country wakes up to find this delightful CD in their Christmas Stockings.....
A wonderful CD.......2003-09-13
This is a CD that adults will love as much as children. I tend to be playing it even when my little one isn't in the car. McCutcheon has a very nice "James Taylor" like voice. There are some original and some old favorites each done in his own style. I don't get tired of his voice or the songs. The instrumentation is very well done. I have yet to listen to "Where are you going my little one" without shedding a tear or two.
I've never tired of this one!
The Greatest Kids Music Adults Should Have.......1999-01-06
Like the dialog in many cartoons, John McCutcheon's children's music has lyrics that adults can really relate to, that the kids may never pick up on for years. His songs tend to bring adults back to "real important things that grown-ups soon forget" (Kindergarten Wall); or making you realize the value in what you have and making the best you can of it (Over in the Meadow); or we don't all have to be perfect to be of value (I'm a Little Cookie); and on, and on. What refreshing concepts in contrast to what society bombards us with these days. I enjoy John's music as much or more than my children, and this CD has a wonderful collection of his works. I like it 'cause it is fun and brings me back to my roots. My kids like it 'cause it's fun. We all sing along, and though the songs are typically lively and up-beat, they have a tremendous calming effect. If I need a sedative for my toddler when we are traveling, this will do it. Don't question buying this one; JUST DO IT. And if you ever have a chance to see John McCutcheon perform live; grab the kids and go.
