Wonderful, as always.......2007-03-09

I have twin girls, now almost 12. Catherine Grace and Olivia Joy listened to this CD every night for the first year of their life--and have seen many, many of Liv's concerts. They own two of Liv's earrings (Olivia herself has one set; we have the other sets). Nothing like getting a cell call from her secretary or an honor or letters or a call during church choir. Hooray!

Not Just a Kid's Album.......2006-03-27

I've been waiting for a long time to hear Olivia sing some classic standards and she does it with such grace and artistry. Her rendition of YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE is one of the best I've ever heard. Heartfelt and sincere. WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR has never sounded better. This is a gorgeous CD with lush arrangements and Olivia has never sounded better.

Warm, Tender, and truly beautiful........2005-08-25

With her flawless, crystal clear voice full of emotion Olivia delivers one of her most beautiful, though under-rated, projects of her stellar career. Stunningly arranged, orchestrated, and sung this album presents timeless standards such as The Way You Look Tonight, Twelfth of Never, and an exquisite version of Over the Rainbow. Though intended to be a "lullaby" album, which it completely succeeds at being, one wishes Olivia would have dropped such songs as the child friendly Twinkle Twinkle Little Star for more pop classics. Other stand-out selections are You'll Never Walk Alone, Jenny Rebecca, When You Wish Upon a Star, and the adult contemporary Reach Out For Me. Olivia closes the set with just a tease of the Brahms Lullaby which will make you take a deep breath, close your eyes and wish for more, more, more...a lovely, stunning collection of songs sung by a truly great singer.

Tender and Top-Notch!.......2005-08-18

I've loved Olivia's voice since grade school. She shines on this album. Singing many children's favorites and old standards, her voice is smooth, silky, and soothing throughout. This is a perfect nocturnal selection, and it's a superb and thoughtful choice for any mother-to-be or new mother.

Sweet and Wonderful.......2005-08-04

I have always been a huge sucker for a relaxing lullaby, as well as uplifting childrens music. While I don't have any children of my own yet, I enjoy providing care for little ones at my church and this is a CD that I would definitely keep in the nursery. The first song - Jenny Rebecca - was the only one that I was not fond of. Being a fan of Olivia Newton John's performance in "Grease" it was interesting and wonderful to hear her voice in such a "Warm and Tender" environment.

I expected good music from one parent to another parent.......2007-05-03

While her vocals are great (and very reminiscent of a blend of Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan) and I did expect a collection of songs from the heart of a parent, I was disappointed to find language that would require a bar of soap in a household of children. I can't play this when my kids are around! What's the point in that?

A truly gifted artist who has an unbelievable voice.......2006-01-30

I discovered Kath Fisher on itunes and fell in love with her album "One". Her voice is truly her instrument, so controlled and multi-layered, soulful and capable of long notes and belts. She has a good range, with shades of Tori, Alanis, but with a deep tone that makes her truly unique. Her lyrics are cool, with an enunciation that makes them understandable. Her tunes are catchy, but not your typical radio pop, though I have heard her on San Diego radio. Standouts include "I will love you" on ONE; I love "Beautiful Life" which you may recognize from the Toyota commerical; and "The Lovely Years" from the new album of the same name. I actually have all of her albums, and all songs are just great. UPPERS AND DOWNERS is an album of 1/2 quick tempo songs and 1/2 slower songs, with lots of covers, including a cool version of "Dream On". If you are looking for a great, but for some reason undiscovered in the mainstream true talent, you can't go wrong with Fisher. Why isn't this girl famous?

I love Fisher's music, and bought this the day it came out. The music is good, but I was a little disappointed that the theme for the album was about how wonderful it is to be parents. Not that babies aren't wonderful, they are, but if you aren't a new parent you may not relate well to this album and True North would be a better pick.

new moms will be particularly attracted to the pretty songs. the lullaby "you" is especially nice -- one of only two Lullaby songs to actually make me weepy-eyed thinking about my wee one (who is now 8) (the other song was "baby mine" by alison krauss)

her voice is as lush and memorable as ever, and the music and arrangements are even better than on previous works.

stand outs other than "you": "all i ask" "beautiful day" "sleepy head" "lovely years" "turn around" and "be here".

good stuff! cd universe has the cd for $3 cheaper. i guess amazon gets their shipping cost one way or another.....

This CD is fantastic. I would say it's as close to perfect as a recording of this material could come. These songs certainly helped to fuel the baby boom, and this recording of them could fuel another.

I first fell in love with "My Ship" when I saw the video on VH1 in 1994. "Warm & Tender" became my every-mood favorite. During a recent move my beloved CD was damaged and I have been unable to find a replacement. Please bring back this gem to those of us who already treasure it and to those of us who have yet to uncover the treasure.

I saw the video for "My Ship" and found Bernard Fowler to be just stunning. And the music is definitely mood setting - makes you fall in love with love again. I was lucky enough to hear them perform a few years ago.

Excellent stuff!.......2005-09-09

I had been looking for the CD version of "Warm and Tenter Soul" for a very long time, since my dad has the album and I grew up listening to it. I was so happy when I finally found it, along with another one one Percy's albums attached as well -- two albums in one! Percy Sledge is truly a master at what he does best -- sing, sing, sing! Please, if you are a fan of this awesome entertainer then please check this CD out, you will not regret it. Every song is powerful and soulfully done.

I purchased this CD for my grandson and loved it so much, I had to buy one for myself!! I have it in my car and listen to all the great songs while comuting to and from work. Singing along with Sammie is a GREAT 'stress buster'!!

I really like Treasure Every Step, Campin Tonite, Pop,Pop,Pop and the "kiddie rap" in the song about the train. I can't pick a favorite! Singing "Round and Round" has improved my timing of my turns while skiing!!

I would recommend Nature's ABC's for kids OLD and YOUNG alike!!

We've been loving listening to Nature's ABCs at our house! My four-year-old and six-year-old are always singing songs from it at the most wonderfully random...but not...times. We will be walking holding hands and one of them will sing, "Treasure Every Step." I'll be doing housework and hear one of them upstairs (through the heating vent)pretending to be a train...singing, "Chug a chug a chug a chug a chug...CHOO CHOO! Chug a chug a chug a chug a chug...WOO WOO!" We are so grateful to have Sammie Haynes-Nature's ABCs in our lives to sing and dance to! She sings about nature and love...and other great stuff, too! My family thanks you, Sammie, for all of the conversations and drawings and role playing your beautiful music has inpired!

Getting Excited About Baroque Opera.......2006-06-17

George Frideric Handel (1685 – 1759), Arias for Montagnana. Performed by David Thomas, bass, and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, San Francisco, conducted by Nicholas McGegan. Recorded in September, 1989, at Lucas Studios, San Rafael, California.
Harmonia Mundi USA HMU 907015 (and also available on HMX 2907171.74). Total time: 67’40”.

The story of Handel’s opera business in Georgian London is one of jealousy, intrigue, rivalry, factions and, occasionally, of singers coming to blows. No wonder, then, that the composer had, over the years, to replace singers who had left his troupe, often enough to join rival organizations. Italian bass Montagnana was with Handel from 1731 to 1733 and again, briefly, in 1737 – 1738. As with his other “stars”, Handel composed music specially for him, giving him roles which would best show off his abilities. These appear to have been considerable, with Handel not only writing new music but reviving arias from his Italian days with their incredible leaps and amazingly deep notes: “Fra l’ombre e gli orrori”, although here sung in the Montagnana version from the opera “Sosarme”, is better known as an aria of Polifemo from the cantata “Aci, Galatea e Polifemo” (1707). This is not the only instance of self-borrowing on this disc. The Italian version of “O ruddier than the cherry” from “Acis and Galatea” (1732 version) – presumably recomposed to avoid Montagnana having to sing in English with his heavy Italian accent – is, in fact, based on music by Keiser, as Andrew Porter is at pains to point out.

Opinions differ as to whether David Thomas is an ideal modern interpreter for these Da capo arias. Whereas Harmonia Mundi quote the late and highly respected Stanley Sadie of “Gramophone” magazine with high praise (“Thomas has a formidable range, a dazzling technique […] and a tone that is full and resonant yet always clearly defined”), others have been inclined to see Thomas’s timbre as problematical and to pour their praise instead (and with every justification) on the tremendous sound and playing of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. I suppose this is, like so much in music, a matter of taste – personally, I find David Thomas’s voice a little too throaty, in places almost sounding as though he could do with a throat lozenge and a week off work!

Having said that, however, this is still a highly entertaining disc. Thomas had recorded some of the arias here a few years earlier (with the Academy of Ancient Music, conducted by Christopher Hogwood, in “Esther” and “Orlando”). Others are new, and, as in the case of the excerpts from “Ezio”, “Tolomeo” and “Deborah”, rarely heard today. With the exception of a little obtrusive “pre-echoing” at one or two points, the recorded sound is magnificent (compliments to engineer Peter McGrath), enabling one to hear perfectly every modulation of Thomas’s voice, but also those glorious strings, trumpets and other period instruments played so beautifully by the Philharmonia Baroque. This is truly music that can get me excited about baroque opera!
