All for Freedom
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Sweet Honey in the Rock emphasizes rhythmic and sing-along numbers on its first children's album. Most songs have a progressive message, but the music itself has a contagious energy on songs like "The Little Red Caboose," "Juba," and "Amen." Civil Rights chants are mixed with African stories and a Georgia Sea Island chant, and young singers from Washington's Adam Elementary School join in on five numbers. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:
redux.......2007-07-06
Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!
Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20
I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.
This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.
POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20
The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

An uplifting experience.......2006-12-05
If one takes into account the time at which this recording was made, and the surrounding events affecting his life, one can truly appreciate the significance of this album. Experiencing oppression not only from the U.S. but later the Canadian government to travel abroad, Robeson was impeded, but not prevented from singing in the name of peace, human rights, and the rights of the common worker. Victory was at hand when on May, 9 1958, the date of this recording, Paul Robeson announced that his passport battle had been won. This is the recording of a triumphant gentleman, a loving, ecstatic audience, and very importantly, a talented and very attuned pianist (Alan Booth). With this in mind one can more greatly appreciate how special this concert was. The magic of this recording trancends Robeson's impeccable singing. It is the concert as a whole that makes it so spectacular. Listen to 'Joe Hill', think of Robeson's battle, and hear why it is so powerful. Or listen to 'O No John', Alan Booth pounding the keys on the last notes, and the audience's response. Every person in Carnegie Hall was riveted. Well worth the price, and an uplifting experience.
One of the best, and latest, of the Robeson recordings..........2006-10-17
This concert came along in 1958, when Paul's passport was restored and he was allowed to travel and make a living again, after several years of being on the Communist blacklist. His joy at performing once more for his traditional audience comes through in every track. That same year, he did a concert at his brother's church in Harlem, and when Columbia Records issued that one, it had another winner. Not long after those shows, Paul went overseas for five years, suffering a health crisis that brought him back to America in 1963, broken down and unable to perform consistently. He spent his last decade or so of life on the sidelines, living quietly with his sister in Philadelphia. This concert, then, along with the one at Mother Zion Church, is one of the final triumphs of one of the most interesting American lives. We know now that Paul's stubborn support of the Soviet Union in the Stalin era was a tragic flaw in his character, but he had magnificent gifts of voice and of acting presence, and had he come to the attention of audiences in 1957 instead of 1927, he would likely have earned millions as a singer and actor, and his political and social radical activism would have been a much smaller impediment to his career. If you already own some Robeson recordings, add this one because it represents him at the beginning of what was then "old age." If you own none, this concluding album is actually a fine starting point, because his earlier work suffers a bit from the primitive recording technology of the '30's and '40's.
Paul Robeson Live.......2006-07-11
Of course his baritone is fabulous. His rendition of Joe Hill is unforgettable - this was a song he sang for the builders' labourers on the site of the Sydney Opera House in around 1969 -also Old Man River, which he made his own. He should have sung this in the film of the musical Showboat but he was passed over for an inferior voice by the producers because he was a member of the Communist Party. A pity. He also sings some gospel on this CD, I'm not mad about religious songs but if you like them then you'll love this.
New version available in UK.......2006-02-18
This version is now redundant as Vanguard has released a version in 2005 with the original album cover for the first time and with new sleeve notes. The sound is also better. I purchased it from amazon.co.uk.
Question.......2005-09-29
I would like to buy Paul Robeson CD with "Old Man River" and "Kevin Barry (Irish)"

There's NO ONE Like Charlie Daniels!.......2007-03-16
If only we could find a man like Charlie Daniels to lead this country back to what we once were - The Greatest Nation On Earth! He may be countrified, he may be a Simple Man, but by the grace of God he is EXACTLY what he is: a red-blooded American who pulls no punches, and leaves nothing unsaid. God bless you, Charlie Daniels, and God bless our still-great country.
AMEN Mr. Daniels!!!.......2006-02-27
A fantastic CD for any true American to have in their collection.
You don't even necessarily need to like country music to enjoy this very Patriotic music, But, loving America will pretty much guarantee you will be glad you bought it.
great american country album.......2004-08-28
i really enjoy this album. it is a must have for all of us fans of mr daniels. i feel just about like him when it comes to america. like america should be freedom of speach. he's welcome to his' just as i am and you are. he is the king of sothern country music and always will be. so but this one if you like ole charlie daniels. its a must have. you'll be glad ya did. i am.
jingoistic pablum.......2004-06-30
Mr. Daniels is clearly profiteering from the War on Iraq, just like those idiots who were selling t-shirts with pictures of the twin towers exploding a day after 9/11. Shame on you, Mr. Daniels.
Strong words to make you proud.......2004-03-05
I am not an American, but I live in this country as a foreign worker and I appreciate everything good that America stands for. I am here legally, I didn't sneak across borders, nor am I living on welfare. I love this country as though it were my own. So I despise self-hating American liberals and those who would sell out this country to the villains of the world, including the corrupt United Nations.
I thank Charlie Daniels for being one of those rare celebrities who are proud of their country and unashamed to be public about it. I listened to this entire album in Borders before I bought it. The opening track is a spoken word piece taken from Daniels' book "This Ain't No Rag." It's a beautiful description of all that's great about America.
The rest of the songs are all patriotic. Country music is not my favorite genre, but this music is good because of its lyrical content. There are even some songs that got my foot tapping, like the "Summer of '68," about the way the Vietnam Vets were persecuted by self-indulgent hippies who had neither the courage to lay down their lives nor the insight to appreciate it. "American Farmer" is a salute to the unappreciated farmers that the Democratic Party is trying to take subsidies away from. Charlie even salutes MLK Jr. on "Let Freedom Ring." "The Last Fallen Hero" is a ode to US troops currently in Iraq. It's like an anthem but it has a sound that reminds me a bit of Leonard Cohen. "Simple Man" is an expression of outrage at the lack of justice in liberal-dominated courts and Charlie suggests a few alternative means of justice!
This album is an excellent counterpoint to the empty-headed refrains of Steve Earle, the Dixie Chicks, Bruce Springsteen, Chrissie Hynde and other knee-jerk liberals.

Customer Reviews:
Music for mamas and babies.......2001-10-05
My close friend titled my birthday copy of this album, "Music for Mamas and Babies." And I, the mama, have played and sung the album with my two children and by myself every day for days at a time. The words that come to mind -- harmony, happiness, thinking, learning, singing -- may be words that you like to hear. Then you would also like to hear a new version of "Cumbaya," a story about the children's song of Ono, Africa, how to fall in love "two by two," and how to make a drum. Sweet Honey's vocal harmonies, unique arrangements, accapella performances, non-accapella performances, commitment to equality, and rich story-telling make this an album to listen to past the time your babies are babies.
Movin' music!.......2000-06-21
This CD will have you singing along in no time! It's jubilant sounds and children participation are so upbeat anyone would smile! These women produce fabulous music even for non gospel music lovers! A great CD for children, and many songs they can sing and move to.

Forerunner to Sky.......2006-02-23
This CD is really a compilation of the 3 "experimental" albums John Williams did before his venture with the Prog Rock group Sky. So if you are a classical purist then you might not like this CD. Otherwise, it's a rare combination of songs from "Changes", "The Height Below", and "Travelling" - the 3 albums that eventually led to Sky. Also, a few songs from his work with Cleo Laine are thrown in.
The overall style of this CD is like a soundtrack (such as the music from "The Deer Hunter"). But it still features great guitar work as well (several from Bach). Williams' playing is clean and crisp - whether he is playing a straight classical piece or doing an accompanyment. You will see he is accomplished in both roles with this CD. Classical purists might consider this "light weight" but the rest of us call it accessable and interesting.

In 1947, the American Heritage Foundation arranged for the original Declaration of Independence and other historic national documents to tour the country on a red, white, and blues Freedom Train. Paul Robeson recorded a poem Langston Hughes wrote about the train that is presented here along with a 1957 concert Robeson, accompanied by pianist Alan Booth, gave over transatlantic cable for the South Wales Miners. Robeson, who spoke 20 languages, sings one song in Welsh. A highlight is the Welsh Treorchy Male Voice Choir serenading Robeson with "We'll Keep a Welcome in the Hillside." There is some static on the recording, but not enough to obscure Robeson's magnificent performance. --Stanley Booth
Customer Reviews:
Extraordinary Privilege to own this rare recording!.......2001-08-06
I call this an extraordinary privilege because it's an artifact of a man who fought for freedom with the fervor of Martin Luther King, Jr, but without his fame. This is a recording of a Paul Robeson concert which should have been performed in Wales. However, although Paul Robeson was a U.S. citizen, he had his passport denied for 8 years because of his civil rights actions. Robeson never allowed the voice of freedom to be stilled. The concert went on over the newly installed transatlantic phone cable! The recording begins most appropriately with Paul Robeson performing the poem by Langston Hughes, "Freedom Train", with strength and truth that led Paul Robeson in becoming a giant in human rights. This recording clarifies that emotions were high on both sides of the Atlantic! The voices of Robeson's baritone and the Welsh men's choir, fantastic! Eyes surely were streaming with tears at the conclusion of this 1957 concert in both New York and Porthcrawl, Wales, just as mine overflowed when Robeson offers his Thanks to the Welsh people and promises to see them soon, The choir, across the ocean, adds their promise of invitation with "We'll Keep a Welcome in the Hillside". Words from this reviewer are nothing. You must become a listener yourself. That's the only way to have this extraordinary privilege!
A Chance to Eavesdrop on an Extraordinary Occasion.......1998-08-11
I was in Junior High when this incredible concert occurred, and I remember hearing about it without understanding all the whys and wherefores. What a powerful experience it was to listen to this for the first time.
For those who aren't familiar with the history, the well-written program notes tell the story of Paul Robeson and how he was blacklisted in the US, had a career in Britain where he met up with and made a film about the South Wales coal miners, and how the State Department froze his passport and wouldn't let him leave the country for a number of years, not even to perform at this singing festival in Wales.
The trans-Atlantic phone cable was new on the scene, so the festival organizers arranged for Paul Robeson to "appear" by telephone. The CD includes the introduction by the organizer, selections by Paul Robeson, and selections by a Welsh choir, singing for him. In the final selection, the audience of 5,000 people in Wales sings, "We'! ll Keep A Welcome in the Valleys" - a very poignant selection under the circumstances.
The recording of the concert was made on the Welsh side, with Mr. Robeson's voice coming through the phone wire, so the quality of the recording may not satisfy some listeners. Still, the power of Mr. Robeson's voice comes across loud and clear, as does the emotion of the occasion.
This is a must for Welsh-Americans and African-Americans, as well as anyone who wants to see what the US government was capable of doing to its citizens back in the Cold War days.
