Child's Celebration of Rock & Roll

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Dust off your blue suede shoes and polish up the tail fins on the Chevy: this album transports listeners back to the 1950s and early 1960s with all-time classic rock & roll. Children will love the strong rhythms, (sometimes) silly words, and easy-to-follow vocals. Adults will enjoy the cruise down memory lane with megahits like "Rock Around the Clock," "Willie & the Hand Jive," "Rockin' Robin," and "Name Game." Retaining all the spunk and sparkle they did when rock was young, these digitally remastered tunes are ready to inspire a whole new generation of little boppers. --Deborah L. 5 out of 5 stars Pure Joy.......2007-06-09

Not only does my five year-old son love it, but I do too. I just turned fifty, so I can relate to these songs' heyday. My boy loves them because they're joyfully silly!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!.......2007-05-10

My five year old son and I both enjoy this CD. The songs are oldies but goodies and really get him moving. We've listened to it while stuck in traffic and ended up having a lot of fun! I recognize some of the songs from when I was a kid, like Monster Mash and Chewing Gum, and then there are ones from well before my day like Rockin' Robin.
I highly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Good Clean Fun!!.......2007-05-07

As a mom, I am always on the lookout for music for my young kids. Our oldest wanted something he could keep in his room to listen to, but so many CDs these days have questionable lyrics. I wanted something he could listen to whenever he wanted. I found it!!

This CD is so much fun for the whole family to listen to...kids, parents, grandparents...everyone will love it! I was amazed that I could get all of these fabulous songs by ORIGINAL ARTISTS on one CD for this price! Usually, you will pay this much for music done by immitation artists. This was great! The kids thought so many of these songs were funny...Yakkity Yak; Splish, Splash!; Willie & the Hand Jive. We all had a few laughs and some very funny dancing. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

5 out of 5 stars Kids and adults will love this.......2006-08-17

A lot of the classic Rock and Roll songs of the late 1950s-early 1960s on this album. This is a great album to introduce to young kids and adults who love classic rock and roll songs.

4 out of 5 stars Toddlers Love Rock 'n' Roll.......2006-01-30

I purchased this CD for my 18 month old twins who absolutely just love it! It's great music for family gatherings because the old and young alike can enjoy singing and dancing along to it.

Be it quacking with "The Ugly Duckling," singing along with folksy "This Old Man," bopping to the calypso beat of "The Banana Boat Song," or daydreaming to "House on Pooh Corner," every member of the family will find a favorite in this compilation of songs by the original artists. --Deborah L. 5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-16

We borrowed this from the library so many times that I finally bought a copy for my daughter to own. Even us parents love it. It has many classic songs that I remember from my childhood and it's great to relive the memories again with my child.

5 out of 5 stars Best Children's CD ever!!!!.......2007-05-14

I used to listen to this CD with a little girl I was taking care. We love it!
Today I bought for my son and this is his favorite.
I think this is the best CD for kids ever.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" CD for all children.......2005-09-05

if you are looking for a CD with more than "a couple good songs" this CD is for you. A mellow CD with classics such as "Baby Beluga" and "House at Pooh Corner." You will not be sorry when you purchase this CD for your music-loving child. Great for toddlers and preschoolers!

5 out of 5 stars A great CD for kids and adults!.......2005-02-10

You won't regret buying this CD. It has so many great songs by great artists, that "Over the Rainbow" is one of the worst -- and that's really saying something. My favorites are "Jelly Man Kelly," "Baby Beluga" and "Skip to My Lou." I hate cheesy children's music -- but there's none of that here! You'll be humming along with your kids.

5 out of 5 stars Bundle With "Over The Rainbow With Joey" Book For Great Gift.......2004-06-11

This CD when given to a new parent with the beautiful board book, "Over The Rainbow With Joey" makes the perfect new baby gift. The classic soundtrack found on this CD with other favorites will be enjoyed by baby and parent and make lasting memories.

5 out of 5 stars Barbara Ann a Favorite..........2006-01-30

I don't know who likes this CD more, my 18 month old twins or their grandparents!

Barbara Ann was an instant hit with the twins and nothing is cuter than seeing them dancing around the house singing ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba with or without the music playing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection of Music........2004-11-04

A CHILD'S CELEBRATION OF DANCE MUSIC is a wonderful collection of music put out by the Music for Little People label. There aren't very many people familiar with the albums released by Music for Little People, but thier label produces some of the best collections of popular music suitable for families that I have ever come across. Most of their albums are centered around a theme or type of music (Country, Rock and Roll, etc.) and it's all good stuff sung by the original artists. No Britney Spears or boy band songs here. Instead, songs that at one time were fairly popular, but that are now somewhat obscure are brought together with a few better known hits. This collection includes songs that are fun to dance to. Some of my favorites include:

"Twist" by Chubby Checker

"Disco Duck" by Rick Dee and His Cast of Idiots

"I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5

"Palisades Park" by Freddy Cannon

"Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

Children and adults will both delight these songs. I can attest that I've used the album for small dance parties I've had with my friends, as major music for a 50s theme meal at a summer camp, and played it many times on the children's radio show I once djed and produced and on the webradio show I currently host. So, "Come on baby, let's do the twist."

5 out of 5 stars Good Wholesome Music.......2003-01-16

My children, ages 2 and 4, absolutely love this CD! It's great for road trips in the car or when the children need a little exercise. Most of the songs were released before my time, but I've learned all the words. It makes a great gift for baby-boomers too.

4 out of 5 stars 5 1/2 YEAR OLD WAS NOT AS THRILLED AS I.......2002-02-16

IT HAS SOME GREAT DANCING TUNES-NO DOUBT. IT MAKES YOU WANT TO GET UP AND SHAKE YOUR BOTTY. I LOVE IT. MY SON, WHOM IT WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED FOR, IS A BIT LESS ENTHEUSTAIC.

5 out of 5 stars Dance Music by various artists.......1999-12-06

I purchased this CD for my second grade classroom and my students and I love it! Each time I play this music my students can't help but to dance while they are working and sing along with the music. It is definitely one of my favorite CDs to play.

Children of all ages will delight in the simple melodies featured in A Child's Collection of Folk Music. These story-songs are repetitive and eminently singable. Material ranges from traditional twangy banjo numbers like "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain" from Folk granddaddy Pete Seeger to the soulful song-in-the-round "Run Molly Run" by contemporary gospel group Sweet Honey in the Rock. Moms and dads will have the opportunity to share some of their favorite folk artists with the next generation: Michelle Shocked, who does a lovely traditional Irish-minstral-type ballad; Taj Mahal, who performs a bluesy "Little Brown Dog"; and Woody Guthrie on "Riding in My Car (Car Song)." And for all the Deadhead mommies, there's Jerry Garcia and David Grisman performing "There Ain't No Bugs on Me." Kids will particularly enjoy the Cajun boogie of Buckwheat Zydeco and the trip-over-the-tongue island music of Cedella Marley Booker. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, diverse, and not stupid........2007-02-18

I too am a "concerned mother who ACTUALLY read the lyrics" (sniff!) and I'm extremely concerned that people who are that offended by such a playful, mild phrase are raising children. Please. Lighten up, or indulge in Barney.

Beautiful, layered work on this cd: a pleasure to listen to, dance to, sing along with. From age 2 to 38 in this house, we're enthralled.

5 out of 5 stars Great cd--now about those lyrics..........2005-12-21

This is wonderful stuff, though I share some of the concerns below about the lyrics. Take "there may be lobsters on some of you mobsters"--that's just not logical. And it you said that to a mobster, he'd ice you, so you shouldn't teach your kids to say things like that. Otherwise, though, this is great.

5 out of 5 stars you'll love it too.......2003-10-30

My 3 y.o. loved it. The music is upbeat and fun, and you'll crack your kid up when you sing your own version of Ridin' in My Car. And Their Ain't No Bugs on Me is a great song. I don't know about your kid, but mine can handle a lyric like "How in the hell can the old folks tell ..." especially when sung so cheerfully and, um, innocuously. Mostly, it's a cd that you yourself will enjoy listening to ... even (believe it or not) the supplied version of Skip to My Lou.

4 out of 5 stars A Child's Celebration of Folk Music/Various Artists.......2003-06-02

Loved it except for the "Ain't no bugs on me" song. It uses the phrase "how in the (hell) can the old folks tell" In my opinion, that is not appropriate for young children.

2 out of 5 stars Concerned mother actually listened to lyrics.......2003-05-31

Most of the songs are enjoyable and of the caliber I expected after reading the reviews posted. However, on Garcia's version of "Ain't No Flies On Me", there is a mild obscenity, which is fine for an adult compilation, but unacceptable for a compilation directed to children. As the rules for this forum prohibit obscenities, I cannot be more explicit about the exact lyrics. I am extremely disappointed in the editors and will be returning my CD.

5 out of 5 stars Not droll or difficult for adult ears........2002-03-03

What a great CD! I have the first one and like this one just as much if not more (haven't heard it 100+ times yet) The CD I have is in such poor shape I decided to shop for a new one. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic fun!.......2002-02-03

My 3-year-old son absolutely loves this CD. I got it on a whim, because it's hard to find good kids' music. Luckily, this one's a winner. In fact, all the "Child's Celebration" CDs are worth a listen. We dance to this one almost every night.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the orginal..........2002-01-17

The songs on this CD were okay, but we prefered the first CD, Celebration of Song. Two of the songs on this CD were good, especially Inchworm. However, one tune was rap...and we didn't like it at all.

5 out of 5 stars fast-paced musical fun.......2000-02-18

This is a great album (we have the cassette version). Appealing to both kids and parents, it's a fun mix of silly, upbeat songs (Choo Choo Boogaloo and Bananaphone) and slower, more sentimental tunes (Inchworm, All the Pretty Little Ponies) that stay with you long after you're finished listening. My 7-month-old loves it, and he's patient enough to let me listen to it over and over again! It's kids stuff with a sophisticated twist. I'd also recommend the Music For Little People Lullaby Album, it's super-sweet and the mix of songs is really unique.

A soothing collection of traditional and contemporary lullabies from luminaries such as Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Lena Horn, A Child's Celebration of Lullaby is a sweet treat for both parent and child. Standouts include "Light Up the World" by Joanne Shenandoah and "Lullaby," gloriously performed by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks. The key word here is gentle--all the songs bleed one into the other in similar quietude and drifting lilt (which for sleepytime is a positive thing). Not as stimulating or culturally diverse as other collections, Lullaby is nonetheless a stalwart naptime companion and a blessing for cranky parents. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars A Child's Celebration Of Lullaby.......2000-12-17

Although over the past year I have collected several Lullaby theme CD's, If I was to purchase only one CD, this would be my pick!

What a great CD! As a new parent, I have spent many a hour rocking to this eclectic CD and I have not yet grown tired of the selections. "A Child's Celebration Of Lullaby" introduced me to several fun songs, new to me such as "Morningtown Ride - Raffi", Little Brown Dog - Taj Mahal, Blanket For A Sail - Harry Nilssen, and Be Still My Child - Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Meaning and inspiration come through in "Light Up The World" - Joanne Shenandoah, and I felt special connection with "Singin' In My Heart" - Eric Bibb/Linda Tillery. One of the most soothing and beautiful tracks I believe is "Lullaby" - Van Dyke Parks/Brian Wilson.

Although I was previously familiar with Melancholy Baby, Summertime, Shenandoah Lullaby, Brahms' Lullaby, and Cody's Song, this CD has introduced new sounds to these popular songs.

I would give this one Six Stars!

5 out of 5 stars Mellowby.......2000-08-24

When I first heard this CD, I immediately loved it. The vocal artists and the musical selections are wonderful. I especially enjoy Taj Mahal's rendition of "The Little Brown Dog" and Lena Horne singing "Summertime". My four year old daughter loves the song entitled "Good Night" by The Roches. It is a delightful story about a young girl captured by an invisible monster. My 2 year old enjoys listening to Raffi's "Morningtown Ride" in the morning while we eat breakfast. This CD is not only for bedtime. Play it when you want to feel mellow.
