In My Hometown
Editorial Reviews

Harry Chapin's younger brother Tom never made the elder's commercial splash, but his recordings for kids are doing wonders for parents. Chapin's seventh children's recording, In My Hometown, is unapologetically excellent at several musical levels. Simplicity in melody here never cheats the rich instrumentation or complex, polystylistic composition. In the profusion of styles are lively mariachis, bouncing ragtime, funny ska, and, of course, plenty of dyed-in-the-wool folk. And for all the musical variety, none of the songs shoots above kids' heads. Like his brother, Tom Chapin writes narrative songs, many of them turning on witty repetitions that perk kids' ears up--and still strike adults as worth hearing. If you peruse Chapin's musician list, you'll also find some marquee talent, such as jazz trumpeter Lew Soloff, uilleann pipes maestro Jerry O'Sullivan, and former Blues Brother Blue Lou Marini on alto sax. --Andrew Bartlett

Here's a town worth a long visit. All sunshine and effervescent life, these new songs, presented in a variety of upbeat rhythms, take listeners on a bubbly, clever tour of the people, places and daily happenings in an offbeat, fictional town, where the comical "Dog Rules" features a doo-wop canine chorus and "Gerti's Birdseed Diner" caters to a varied, feathered clientele. In "A Mozart Duet" the composer pops up to give a frustrated young piano player some advice. "Goosetown Halloween" is a... read more

Rich harmonies combined with spellbinding lyrics..........2003-05-02
This is undoubtedly the most fun recording I have ever bought my kids (ages 6&8) and nearly the most memorable I've bought, period. With top-class lyrics, melodies, and orchestration, this disc has me singing tunes to my children and grabbing for the lyrics printout in the accompanying booklet. My favorites are Goosetown Halloween for its ironic story lines and fast but complex tonal structures and the Lemonade song for its beautiful harmonies and mention of our neighboring Caribbean island Aruba.
Great Family Music.......2002-10-04
Love Tom Chapin! This is my family's favorite CD! Children of all ages will appreciate the melodies and humor of the songs. Am currently teaching school children these tunes and they respond eagerly! So refreshing to sing tunes that are positve, funny and beautiful musically.
My favorite Tom Chapin album... highly recommended.......2002-06-17
Our first Tom Chapin album, "Billy the Squid," was borrowed from the library. I found the lyrics so clever, and the tunes so catchy, I ended up tracking down all of his albums available in the library catalog, then proceeded to buy all my favorites. "In My Hometown" is at the top of that list. The tunes are all pretty snappy, and I would be hard-pressed to choose my favorite... although I *love* "A Mozart Duet," which actually incorporates the Sonata in C. It *exactly* captures the way a kid tends to practice the piano and addresses the problem. Not to mention that my 4-year old is now *so* familiar with the piece in question she actually recognized it (Mozart, not Tom Chapin) when she heard it on the radio! She also spontaneously sings several the songs on her own... without the CD! The very best part is that it's "real" music... not the dumbed-down, sacharine pap that usually passes for kids' music.
Fantastic family music!!.......2002-04-10
WE LOVE this CD!! Our whole family has it memorized and we sing it again and again! In this day and age it is great to have a CD everyone can listen to, laugh to, learn from and enjoy! "Dog Rules" is cool, "Da Baby Sitter" is such a neat song my older son used it as an audition piece (and won the part!), "Mozart Duet" inspires and encourages all pianists to keep on practicing, and "His name is Ty" helps kids understand why some children may not be so outwardly friendly ("their just a little shy!")GREAT CD FOR TEACHERS!!! Positively wonderful music for children of ALL AGES!
My Home town.......2001-12-03
Tom Chapin is still the best. From Kids age 2 to 10 his music entertains both kids and parents.

great tribute.......2003-10-12
I normally hate Springsteen tributes, but this is amazing. Into the Fire and Atlantic City are both incredible.
I don't know what the other guy is thinking.
Awful trash.......2003-06-19
This pains me to say it but as a collector of springsteen related stuff, thi smight very well be the worst yet. The string arrangements are pedestrain and amateur. The melodies are discernible but it hurts to hear those favourite tunes murdered like this

charming romantic musical; Ann Morrison is stunning.......2004-01-22
PEG is a charming musical version of J. Hartley Manners' immortal play PEG O' MY HEART, with music and lyrics by David Heneker. This CD features the original 1984 London cast headed by the stunning Ann Morrison as Peg herself.
The cast also includes Sian Phillips (GIGI), Edward Duke, John Hewer, Patricia Michael, Julia Sutton, David McAlister, Martin Smith, Liza Sadovy and Tim Smith.
The story of PEG translates effortlessly to the musical comedy stage, and standout numbers include "That's My Father", "Pretty Dresses", "There's a Devil in Me", "I Want to Dance" and "Manhattan Hometown".
Highly recommended. [JAY CDJAY1351]

Great for a variety of ages.......2002-11-23
My boys are 5 and 9, and like many, are exposed to a lot of pop music via TV. YUCK. I love this CD because it is geared to children who are still children, not mini adults. I also love it because the songs are so "singable"! After only a couple of times listening to the tape in the car we were starting to catch on to the tunes and sing along. Having music we can all enjoy while en route is very nice. I will say that my 9-year-old enjoys the lyrics more than my younger son, but he'll soon grow into the songs. We LOVE "Harry the Hat" -- "Da Baby Sitter...
Great Family Entertainment, for ALL ages (even grown-ups!).......1999-02-23
We hadn't seen a new Tom Chapin CD on the market in quite some time, and were getting a little antsy. Then, my husband found this new one, "In My Hometown". While the themes of Tom's music are aimed at children, the style isn't at all juvenile. They're funny, touching, rousing, and raucous, by turns. He and his co-writers also use very different musical genres on each recording, which never happens in mainstream music. So far, our favorite song on this CD is "Da Baby Sitter", about the new sitter - an ex-con named Harry the Hat! We also loved "Dog Rules", the third of Tom's songs about his Golden Retriever. This Be-Bop song lists all the things that makes a dog, a dog, like "any food that falls on the floor is yours." Wonderful artist, wonderful songs, and a wonderful new recording! We look forward to memorizing all the songs, and can't wait for the next one! If you had more stars in your rating system, this CD would get them all!!
Another wonderful collection of family music from Tom Chapin.......1998-08-24
This brand new collection from Tom Chapin reflects the warm feeling we all have for home, no matter where home may be. Chapins own hometown in the beautiful Hudson Valley region of New York is noted by the song "Muhheakunnuk" (the Native American name for the Hudson River). As always the lyrics reflect a humor appreciated by adults as well as understandable to children. Tom is joined by his usual co-writers and musicians John Forster and Micheal Mark as well as his very talented daughters. The songs on this piece would appeal to children 6 and over, though the younger ones will enjoy dancing to the bouncy tunes of "Don't Miss the Bus" and "Gerties Birdseed Diner." "Homemade Lemonade" is a tribute to all young entreprenours with a lesson in good business practices woven in. "Our Next Door Neighbor, The Moon" is a rich and beautiful tune guarenteed to be sung over and over again while putting your children to bed. In a category of music that gets little recognition and no airplay, Tom Chapin is king and this CD is more proof of that.
