O Mickey, Where Art Thou? [Enhanced]

It's not what you're thinking: No Mickey squeaking out Ralph Stanley songs, no picking and grinning Goofy, no banjo-wielding Pluto woofing mountain music. Instead, O Mickey assembles a first-rate cast of country players for a down-home roundup of Disney covers, from Collin Raye's "Circle of Life" to Ronnie Milsap's "When You Wish Upon a Star" to Stonewall Jackson's warm "The Bare Necessities." It works, based not only on performances by the better-known artists (Charlie Louvin included), but also a couple of bona fide instrumental boot-stompers--"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" gets the dueling fiddles treatment, and "The Mickey Mouse Club March" medley lock-steps it to mandolin and Dobro. Directing bluebirds squarely to shoulders is Elizabeth Cook's breezy "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah," but if there's a shortcoming here it's the blurring of country and bluegrass, a muddling of styles apt to get any self-respecting Soggy Bottom Boy's britches in a twist. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Disney Tunes with a Bluegrass feel.......2007-04-02

I enjoyed this CD very much. This is a very imaginative redress of several Disney songs. Although some, like the Bare Necessities and You've Got a Friend in Me, already have a somewhat bluegrass feel.

5 out of 5 stars I love this album.......2006-03-16

Im not a huge fan of country music... but this album is BLUEGRASS! I have the country disney CD too, and I like this one way better! its all our old favorites, and they sound great! My favorite songs are the instrumentals... awsome!

5 out of 5 stars I really love this CD.......2006-02-17

I enjoy country music and I love Disney. I am really enjoying this CD and am going to order a copy as a gift for a friend.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't do anything for me!.......2005-10-18

I am a fan of Disney music, not such a big fan of country or bluegrass though. This CD didn't really do anything for me, listened to it a couple times. I really prefer the original versions of the Disney songs.

2 out of 5 stars O Mickey, What Did You Do?.......2005-04-07

If you dig country music you'll probably enjoy this CD, but for me (someone who only has a passing interest in country music) it was very hard to listen to. Nothing of real substance is added to these songs. Only one of the 10 sung songs really worked for me.

Stonewall Jackson's version of "The Bare Necessities" focuses on the fatherly advice Baloo was giving to Mogli by adding a few ad libs. Combined with the country sound, we get a new feel from the song that stays respectful of the original. I think that's part of the problem with the remaining sung tracks. They are too respectful and don't try to add, enhance or otherwise re-inform the songs.

However, the instrumentals of "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "Mickey Mouse Club March/The Ballad of Davey Crockett" are marvelous. Each completely change the sound and feel of the song and are in fact the only true bluegrass songs on the CD. They made me wish for a full CD of bluegrass instrumentals of Disney songs. In fact, wasn't that what this CD was supposed to be?

Oh well, taken for what it is (mainly country versions of Disney songs) this is CD is adequate. But with just a bit of vision it could have outstanding. Let's hope for a volume II that fulfills the promise of the instrumentals.
