Rhythm in My Shoes

Coming on the sparkling heels of four previously acclaimed recordings, Jessica Harper's Rhythm in My Shoes secures her place in kid-dom as one of its merriest minstrels. The actress and singer-songwriter turns in another delightful collection of original songs that moms and dads will be singing along to with their kids. Like the Roches, Harper possesses a lyrical wit, a wonderful ear, and a sunny voice that conveys a variety of kid-friendly subjects and embraces the everyday sounds of a kid's world, from nursery-school and rap rhythms to chants, tongue twisters, and great, old-fashioned song lyrics. Among the 13 cuts, the standouts are "A Crazy Machine," "Boy Meets Drums," "Girlquake," and "Too Much Snow in Tokyo." But truth be told, there really isn't a clunker in the bunch. Add the colorful musical backing that boasts enough rhythmic variation to make kids move and groove to the music and you've got a fantastic addition to Harper's strong catalog. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Jessica Harper rocks!.......2004-01-08

This CD is just terrific. I bought it as a Christmas gift for my 20-month old niece, who loves music, and she's hooked. Now, as her "nanny", I can tell you she doesn't even want to listen to her old CDs. I first heard "Six Licorice Stix" a few years ago on NPR and couldn't get it out of my head. I looked it up on the Internet and found this CD. It's extremely refreshing, as the other CDs my niece had consisted of remixes of traditional children's songs ("Old MacDonald","Six Little Ducks",etc.). If the young child or children in your life love music, get this CD for them. Their response to it will be thanks enough. The snappy rhythms and humorous lyrics make it fun for adults too. It will bring you closer together.

5 out of 5 stars Mommies will love it too!.......2003-06-27

My 18 month old loves this CD. Now traveling in the car is so much more enjoyable. I just put it on and she is happy and then Mommy is happy. If I don't have it playing she will point to the speaker and demand "music." It's amazing how much she likes it. What makes it even better is that I enjoy it too. It has a great beat and fun lyrics that are quite catchy. I find myself singing the songs long after we are out of the car. I definitely recommend this CD and plan on buying more.

5 out of 5 stars music grownups can love.......2002-09-30

My family loves all of Jessica Harper's albums! She captures the magic of childhood, the intensity of a parent's love, and the fun of growing up -- all with clever lyrics and a variety of catchy tunes and beats. Plus, I love her rich voice & harmonies. This album is better for slightly older kids. "Crazy Machine" is lots of fun, "My Baby is a Genius" pokes fun at too-proud parents, while "Moving Day" takes a reassuring look at the ups and downs of moving far away. Great topics for kids set to great music.
I get tired of most kid's tapes pretty quickly, but I rushed to replace both the Jessica Harper CD's that my kids had scratched beyond repair. They are worth it.

5 out of 5 stars I even listen to it when the kids AREN'T in the car.......2002-07-12

I first knew of Jessica Harper from Phantom of the Paradise and other 70's and 80's B-classics. I never would have thought that she would turn out to be a brilliant childrens' songwriter and performer. Her songs are witty, tuneful, 'singalongable' and instructional in a very sly way.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh sound young kids.......2002-06-15

I first heard a song from this CD in my daughter's community ed gymnastics course (Six Licorice Stix).

My 5 year old daughter and 2 year old son both love the songs on this CD. They both settle down to listen to the songs as we play it in our car.

The songs are peppy with cute little stories that are at the perfect level for my 5 year old. It definitely has a jazzy that will help expand a child's love of music.
