Like Raffi, Hap Palmer is a musical ambassador to kids. Aiming for cultural diversity and/or sensitivity during the holidays on Holiday Magic, Palmer and, occasionally, a group of kids make their merry way through standards like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and remake "Jingle Bells" into "Jingle Song," while visiting the Jewish "Chanukah, Oh Chanukah," the Latino "Feliz Navidad," and even the Hawaiian-flavored "Merry Hula." Palmer and the adults do a wonderful "Caroling, Caroling," but it's the sing-alongs such as "The Angel Band" and others that will get families chiming in, too--and teach some important lessons at a time of year when not everyone is doing the tree and crèche thing. If you are in a holiday mood, but are heartily fed up with Irish (or even worse: Mariah Carey!) Christmas songs, then you might want to consider this album. It is not a soundeffect album, nor is it program music. A final touch is that it is not cheaply produced, as some more traditional holiday albums.
The music conveys a feeling of cold, dark, and immensly lonely winter. The Christmas is there, but there are undertows of older and more sinister rituals, and whispers call the more unwary listeners to join in...
This album could be a very good way to spice up the celebrations.

Nox Arcana's versatility has made them a tough act to follow. Whether it be a musical journey into the foreboding land of vampires (Transylvania) or a sinister carnival with a bloody history (Carnival of Lost Souls) or any of their other forays into gothic imaginings, Nox Arcana has taken each concept and breathed impressive, symphonic life into it. Their CDs truly are mini symphonies, with astounding musicianship and intricate orchestrations.

In Winter's Knight, Nox Arcana presents a moody, elegant collection of holiday-themed songs that captures the more mystical, meditative side of Christmas. The CD's strong medieval/classical flavor is refreshing, particularly since most Christmas music nowadays seems dominated by more modern songs. Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski offer great new arrangements of classic pieces like "Veni, Veni, Emmanuel" as well as many of their own moving compositions, such as the memorably haunting "Crystal Forest" and the chilling piano-dominated "Evening Star." Guest vocalist Michelle Belanger also contributes a lovely interpretation of the holiday standard "Past Time With Good Company" and Jeff Endemann's vocal work on "Coventry Carol" is likewise a highlight.

While most Christmas music is, unfortunately, either infantile and annoying or overdone, Winter's Knight provides a refreshing change of piece full of musical elegance and mystical beauty.

As mesmerizing as falling snow, this poetic and magickal soundscape creates a wonderland of lavish treats befitting the Holiday Season. Haunting and sophisticated, there's a certain luster to these songs that reflects the gothically romantic luxury only Nox Arcana can deliver. The addition of neo-bard, Jeff Endemann's spellbinding voice on "Coventry Carol" delivers an extra gift of warmth for those chilly Yuletide evenings. The original score by Vargo and Piotrowski interspersed with classic carols and a booklet of eye-candy artwork by Joseph Vargo makes this a perfect fit for any Holiday Collection, so fill your wassail cup, pull up some moonlight and breathe in the wonder of Winter Knights.

The idea behind this CD and the music itself are a breath of fresh air in the stagnant holiday music scene. Dark and evocative, it pushes aside the sugarplums and saccharine we're all used to. However, the production leaves quite a bit to be desired. It's all done with computers - the choral parts are lacking in fullness, I can't always tell what the stringed "instruments" are supposed to be, and rather than cadences that would give finality to the piece, the tracks often come to a sudden stop. 3 1/2 stars.

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

What beautiful music! Bonnie Rideout and gang really outdid themselves on this festivious album! Enchanting flutes & bagpipe..and of course gorgeous violin playing. I saw them in concert in Naples on December 4th, 2006 and was very impressed by their skills and talent. Listening to their music makes you feel like you're somewhere on the hills of Scotland! I would definitely recommend everyone to add this album to their music collection.

Many albums claim to be "Celtic Christmas," but few actually deliver the goods. This one does. It is a collection of traditional Scottish carols, wassail tunes, strathspeys and reels. Nothing synthesized here. No morphing into New Age. Exceptional muscianship, interesting arrangements, authentic sounds fill the album. If you love Scottish and Celtic music, you will love this album. If you hate bagpipes, this is not for you. The hammered dulcimer is beautiful, with an almost music box sound. You get just over 60 minutes of music, definitely your money's worth. I highly recommend this album. Just be aware that it is not for everyone. Listen to some of the clips before purchasing. I am thrilled to have this album in my collection. Many others will feel the same way, but you have to appreciate this style of music to truly appreciate the album. Think of Christmas comes to "Lord of the Rings."

A truly beautiful Holiday CD. Even if you are not an afficionado of Celtic music, this is a CD all could enjoy. The performances are thoughtful and beautifully crafted by caring, diligent artists, yet possess the joyous spontaneity that is the hallmark of Celtic music.

I recently had the chance to see Bonnie Rideout in concert when they came to Fairbanks AK. Having just moved there recently and not knowing many people, I went to this concert as a way to feel at home. I have grown up on this music and this concert was no diappointment. The musicianship of these performers is unquestionable. They are highly talented, extremely friendly, and undeniably one of the best live shows I have see. The perfection in which the music is played is so wonderful it sounds almost as same as the albulm. I will be following this lady's career, because she is such a joy to see and hear.

This CD is the reissue of The Magic of Christmas, which was originally released in 1999, that now includes three new songs from the made-for-TV movie Call Me Claus. The three songs removed from the 1999 version to make room for these songs are Go Tell It On the Mountain, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and White Christmas-- all of which appear on Garth's first holiday release, Beyond the Season, from 1992. So, if you have Beyond the Season and don't already own the 1999 version of The Magic of Christmas, then this version is the one for you.

You will not need the 3-song Call Me Claus single UNLESS you have the original issue of The Magic of Christmas and actually care enough about Garth's holiday tunes to track it down.

Amazon has done it again. Their advertising needs improvement. The cd is good but it was a cheap ploy to add 3 songs to the cd and drop 3 other songs that were on the original "...The Magic Of Christmas". A buyer would be better off with the original title and buying the 3-track "Call Me Claus" cd, instead of buying this 2001 version with three songs missing. There are no EXTRA TRACKS on this cd.

Granted it is sung by Gath Brooks whom is probably the best country singer to date, but this CD doesn't sound too country and with the bonus tracks from Call Me Claus, this is a must have christmas album

I am not a big country music fan, or Garth Brooks fan, in fact I own only 4 country music albums. However, this Christmas album is one of my favorite in my collection! My favorites are "Call me Claus" and "Mary Had a Lamb". "Call Me Claus" is one of the funnest, upbeat Christmas songs in my collection. "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is one of those songs about the real meaning of Christmas. I didn't know what to expect when I bought this CD, but I have really enjoyed it!

I don't usually like Christmas, but this album kind of touched me. Last Christmas my sisters and I sat cozy around a warm trash fire on the road in front of our home and enjoy the lovely, uplifting holiday tunes from this album. But then my father would come stumbling home from the bar late on Christmas Eve ranting about how much he hates everything. Then he would command us to make him dinner and turn the music off while he passes out while watching porn.

    These guys are Wild, we need more of good times like this in todays music! Good old fashion fun and nobody gets hurt, well, maybe Hitler. Just a good time CD, enjoyed it a lot!

    This British import is actually a chronology of Spike's earliest 78s for Bluebird / RCA, from his first recording session in 1941 ("Red Wing") through 1945. Included are his hits ("Cocktails for Two," "Der Fuehrer's Face") and obscure B-sides ("The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along," "Leave the Dishes In the Sink"). Spike's band was in its prime during this time, making for a good collection. Editing is good, especially joining the six parts of "The Nutcracker Suite." But note that the source material is scratchy 78s!

    I have this album, only with a different cover than the one displayed. I am very disappointed by the poor audio quality.... low fidelity; scratchy "cut-off" on louder sections and one place where the audio drops out altogether for a half second or so.

    This CD is most of the songs from a stereo LP Andy and his brothers released in about 1970. The song "Holiday Season" is very very good, and a favorite of mine...BUT....this particular CD was released by the CD company in MONO and is a poor recording. IF this was in STEREO, then I would say BUY IT, but since my copy, at least, is in MONO, I say either buy the old LP or wait for these folks to release this in stereo!

    I am an accomplished pianist (with a Master's degree). I'm picky and I'm always looking for great Christmas piano CDs. I found this years ago and have never found anything better since. His playing is like shimmering caresses. Yes, it's great background music, but take the time to sit and listen quietly and I guarantee you will be transported to somewhere else. He's a magical musician. You won't regret getting this one.

    I bought this CD when it was first released, and play it every Chirstmas. It is perfect background music for entertaining and it is wonderful to listen to on a peaceful snowy day. This CD is pure piano music at its finest. Every time one of my guests hears it, they comment on how beautiful this CD is. As a matter of fact, I got on-line to order several of these CDs for Christmas gifts. When I saw that no reviews have been given, I was shocked and knew I had to tell you how perfect it is for the holidays!
