Sesame Street: Oscar's Trashy Songs
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
When your little ray of sunshine has a cloudy day, what better way to lift his or her spirits than with a few catchy ditties from Oscar the Grouch? How could you not love a grumpy monster who croons an ode to the cacophony of city sounds in "Noise" and imagines a perfect land where "you won't see smiles flash and there's great piles of trash" in "Grouchelot"? Though Oscar may delight in maintaining a perpetual bad mood, these quirky tunes, such as "Let a Frown Be Your Umbrella" and "I'm Sad Because I'm Happy," are sure to bring smiles to the most disagreeable of days. --Deborah Moore

Oscar Meets Beefheart: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Grouch.......2007-02-28
Though I tend to stick to Grover related products I will make an exception for this interesting collection of songs from his friend and contemporary, Oscar. Before I begin the review proper, I must inform the gentle reader that "Trashy Songs" is made up of Oscar's 1975 album, the wonderful "Let a Frown be Your Umbrella" along with a few new cuts.
As you can probably imagine from Oscar's general unpleasant and, well "grouchy" disposition, this is not a very uplifting album. In fact it may be the most difficult and depressing album in the `Street catalog. Many comparisons have been drawn between Oscar's recordings and Captain Beefheart's highly-regarded "Trout Mask Replica", and, in fact the two were friends, and Frank Zappa produced both "TMR" as well as "Let a Frown...". This is probably, in part, why this album is of such an experimental nature. Elements of musique concrete abound, and Oscar uses a (then pioneering) technique in which he compiles "found sounds" into a unique cacophony, a carefully structured chaos. Also of note, much of Oscar's vocals were recorded the trashcan where the Grouch has long resided, this lends the recording a harsh and echoing nature. Overall this is one of the best albums of the `Street's classic mid-70s period, including such fantastic albums as "Bert's Blockbusters", and my personal favourite, the amazing "Grover Sings the Blues". I was forced to take a single star off, as, frankly the new material is a bit forgettable. I would draw a comparison between 70s Oscar and 60s Dylan, both of their early careers are absolutely indespensible, while their later works, though better than most artists, are not up to their earlier high standards. Oscar is far superior to Dylan on both counts, however. So, enjoy, and see my other reviews for more `Street products.
A great cd..........2003-08-18
Whether child or adult, you will enjoy this cd. You have to love the grouch who has made his living promoting his love for trash, mud, rain, and sounds that grate on everyone elses nerves. The songs are well arranged and the lyrics clever. Oscar is at his trashy, obnoxious best with songs like "I Love Trash", "Let a Frown be Your Umbrella", and "I'm Sad Because I'm Happy." His unique outlook on life is bound to put a smile on any kids face from two to one hundred and two!
