A Child's Celebration of Soul

Editorial Reviews

Music for Little People yet again proves its prowess at laying down grooves that both kids and their parents want to plug into with the 13th release in its exceptional Celebration series. A Child's Celebration of Soul is among the rare handful of kids' records that prompt a right-minded adult to reread the CD jewel case carefully, just to be sure its contents are no accident. Is it possible the same child who asks persistently for repeat plays of Barney's Greatest Hits might one day clamor instead for classic soul nuggets such as Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" and Aretha Franklin's "Respect"? Celebration effectively blankets the soul bases, offering a taste of everything from the blue-eyed variety to early Motown to the Memphis blues, light style. Better yet, a couple of these numbers--James Brown's fabulously funked-up "Get on the Good Foot" and Gladys Knight & the Pips' full-throttled "Friendship Train" in particular--deliver this music's roots, stitched tightly to the social themes of its time, to the table. A more festive, positive-vibe-producing opportunity to tackle the subject of racial unrest with the kids is not likely to arise; neither, for that matter, is the chance to cut the rug with one's very own rug rats to Robert Parker's "Barefootin'." Above all, this record is an onramp for lucky young listeners to the timeless sound of classic soul music, whose top talents even today remain musically unsurpassable. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Barbara Ann a Favorite..........2006-01-30

I don't know who likes this CD more, my 18 month old twins or their grandparents!

Barbara Ann was an instant hit with the twins and nothing is cuter than seeing them dancing around the house singing ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba with or without the music playing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection of Music........2004-11-04

A CHILD'S CELEBRATION OF DANCE MUSIC is a wonderful collection of music put out by the Music for Little People label. There aren't very many people familiar with the albums released by Music for Little People, but thier label produces some of the best collections of popular music suitable for families that I have ever come across. Most of their albums are centered around a theme or type of music (Country, Rock and Roll, etc.) and it's all good stuff sung by the original artists. No Britney Spears or boy band songs here. Instead, songs that at one time were fairly popular, but that are now somewhat obscure are brought together with a few better known hits. This collection includes songs that are fun to dance to. Some of my favorites include:

"Twist" by Chubby Checker

"Disco Duck" by Rick Dee and His Cast of Idiots

"I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5

"Palisades Park" by Freddy Cannon

"Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

Children and adults will both delight these songs. I can attest that I've used the album for small dance parties I've had with my friends, as major music for a 50s theme meal at a summer camp, and played it many times on the children's radio show I once djed and produced and on the webradio show I currently host. So, "Come on baby, let's do the twist."

My children, ages 2 and 4, absolutely love this CD! It's great for road trips in the car or when the children need a little exercise. Most of the songs were released before my time, but I've learned all the words. It makes a great gift for baby-boomers too.

IT HAS SOME GREAT DANCING TUNES-NO DOUBT. IT MAKES YOU WANT TO GET UP AND SHAKE YOUR BOTTY. I LOVE IT. MY SON, WHOM IT WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED FOR, IS A BIT LESS ENTHEUSTAIC.

5 out of 5 stars Dance Music by various artists.......1999-12-06

I purchased this CD for my second grade classroom and my students and I love it! Each time I play this music my students can't help but to dance while they are working and sing along with the music. It is definitely one of my favorite CDs to play.

1 out of 5 stars What genius put this together?.......2006-09-03

All of these songs are good but half of them are out in left field as far as being choice picks for kids. Taj Mahal is an obscure choice compared to the better known and much more tuneful Tops and Temptations and they put 2 Taj Mahal songs on the CD! Why not pick My Girl by the Temptations which is an excellent choice for a children's song--simple beautiful, singable lyrics. Otis Redding's Dock of the Bay is a far better choice than Chain Gang and why not choose some music by Martha Reeves, like, how about Nowhere To Run--kids can really relate to the lyrics in that song. The producer picked Friendship Train by Gladys Knight when her great song Dancing In The Street has much more soul. And, what the heck is Beautiful Morning by The Rascals doing on a soul album? If they wanted to show that white bands could have soul too then why pick that song? A much better choice for a white band that sounds black is K.C. & The Sunshine Band which had a white lead singer with mostly black musicians and backup singers. Finally, this bust of a CD has only 45:35 of music--a massive rip-off. Leib Ostrow, the producer, doesn't know squat about soul or kids.

5 out of 5 stars funky fun.......2006-03-24

A terrific collection of soul favorites of the 60's and 70's, my baby and I have lots of fun carpet dancing to this CD. Unlike many other Music for Little People CD's where the songs have been completely redone, there are only a few changes to a couple of songs - "updated" with a little hip-hop. Otherwise, the songs are as you remember them.

This is such a great disc that I enjoy listening to it even more than my son. Every child should have the pleasure of owning this. I plan to buy this for friends. Who doesn't like James Brown, Aretha and the Jackson Five?

Keep your dancing shoes on because you and your little one(s) will dance all night with this CD on. All I need to do is hit play and my 2 yr. old son can't stop bopping. Enjoy great tunes from Ike & Tina to the Jackson 5.
