Bigger Than Yourself
Editorial Reviews

Bigger Than Yourself is prolific folk instrumentalist and singer John McCutcheon's sixth "family recording," as kids' discs are euphemistically described these days. All 15 of the songs were cowritten by McCutcheon and most of them find a clever, often witty, way to get across an uplifting lesson. The messages are made even more palatable by spirited, imaginative folk-rock arrangements that employ Tim O'Brien, Cheryl Wheeler, the Kennedys, Bobby Read, Jon Carroll, and a horn section. --Geoffrey Himes

Bigger Than Yourself.......2005-01-21
In the CD "Bigger Than Yourself" songwriter and musician John McCutcheon and Si Kahn have written all 15 songs, from the opening song "I Got a Dime" to the closing song "Bigger Than Yourself". This album is all about friendship, leadership, sticking up for people, and sticking together. John McCutcheon took all of this kids music that could change the world and played it without dumbing it down BECAUSE it is kids music. In conclusion, this is great music to listen to, and learn from!
King of Folksongs.......2005-01-13
The king of all folksongs, John McCutcheon, has arrived, and are we ever thrilled! Have you heard of this folk magician? If you have not, then listen to this.
John McCutcheon has emerged as one of the most respected and loved folksings. He is a master of a dozen different traditional instruments. He sings children's music. His 24 recordings have received every imaginable honor, including five Grammy nominations.
Some of John's amazing and inspiring songs are, "Kids On Strike", "Friends Don't Let Friends", "Stick Together" and "I Got a Dime". There are a lot of catchy phrases and words for kids to learn. Some of these songs teach you valuable lessons, such as lessons about arguing: you should always get someone in the middle to stop it. There is a fantastic variety of styles, both for children and adults. Kids will adore and cherish these songs for the rest of their lives. Some people who don't even like folk music will like this!
Go! Mr. McCutcheon.......2005-01-13
I am writing to praise the work of folk musician John McCutcheon's "Bigger Than Yourself"! This work of art encouraged me and I wished that the world had no wars, and instead peace, and that countries would work together. Hidden in different stories, McCutcheon suggests that the world come together, make peace, and work together to get rid of poverty. He expresses the need for friendship and unity. "I Got A Dime" says that if everyone in the world got together, the world could be rebuilt! "Whatchagonnabe" encourages young children to think ahead and plan some of their life as an adult. McCutcheon plays music of all different styles from fast with a good beat to songs like "Sing Me" with a slower beat and sadder sound.
John McCutcheon's Fonomonal CD.......2004-12-07
John McCutcheon must have a dime! The first song on the CD 'I Got A Dime' is great! It's about what you could do if you just stick to something and don't give up. It has rock and country in it. The second song 'The Principle' is awesome! The third song 'Whatchagonnabe' I love it and so do all of my friends! You should by this CD (on amazon because it is priced very low)!
