Indian Elephant Tea

The exotic title is misleading--more than anything, what chief Big Kid Skip Ewing brews up here is a twangster's funfest. All thirteen songs (minus the title track, an original poem penned by Ewing's grandmother) get the twisted classic treatment: Old McDonald not only had a farm, for example, he also had a band--"and that band could rock, you understand." "Oh Susannah" morphs into "Old Joe Clark," and the itsy-bitsy spider in "The Itsy Bitsy Spider Took the 'A' Train" spills his arachnid guts about his homesickness for the waterspout. The Big Kidz Band brings on the guitars, mandolins, and even the odd sousaphone with gusto, but what cinches this record tight is Ewing's warm Nashville drawl--he pours on the vocal playfulness as if right out of his grandmother's favorite teapot. Expertly steeped in down-home silliness for kids ages 2 and up. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars One of our TOP favorites.......2006-09-01

I borrowed this from the library and had to order a copy of our own. Due to much use I now have to order another copy (ours died) - my daughter and I love it, and everyone who hears it wants a copy.

I wish they would do another album!

5 out of 5 stars This is real music........2004-04-14

This is great stuff. My 2-year old likes to groove to it, and my husband can't keep from picking up his guitar to play along. You might recognize the songs, but Skip Ewing has given them all clever new personalities and massaged the old traditional words just enough to make you pay attention. Lots of kids CD's claim to have music that adults will like, but this is really the first one I've heard that is really sophisticated enough to entertain adults and still engage kids in the traditional children's classics. While I'm at it, I also recommend "Happy Songs" by Milkshake, and "For the Kids" by various.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Yet.......2004-03-13

I hate children's albums because they are so lame, but this is the exception. I find myself listening to this even when the kids aren't in the car. Skip Ewing is a wonderful musician and singer, and this album is written to adult standards and is full of surprises.

5 out of 5 stars For kids big and small.......2003-10-21

My dad got a copy of this CD for himself and the grandchildren after hearing pieces on the radio. My brother, who has no children yet was quite jealous! It's that good of an album. My son, who was nine months at the time we got it, loved it immediately. Everytime we put it on he would start wiggling, and now that he's walking, he dances to it. It is a cute and catchy album, and in our family, 3 generations are loving it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous kids CD.......2003-09-18

This is a really wonderful CD that will appeal to both kids and adults. I'm not quite sure why it's so unknown -- it deserves to be a best-seller. I'd recommend it to everyone and have sent it to lots of other people who all love it too. Give it a try!
