Stefanie Powers has always been a lady of class, both in her personal and professional lives. I had never heard her sing before and bought this CD because I've been a fan of hers for a long time. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good she sounded. There are so many "singers" out there today that can't hold a candle to Stefanie and the quality sound to her voice. The tracks are simple, yet elegant, and are a treat to listen to. Congrats to Stefanie for not only being a wonderful actress, but a good singer too.!

I fell in love with this one the moment I heard it. A record that transports you to another time and place. A time when music was a joy to listen to. The sound is crisp and clear. It reminds me of Doris Day. This album is a keeper. I can not wait for a follow up album.

I bought this CD mostly on a lark for a friend who thinks Stefanie Powers is the epitome of class and charm--both in her roles and in real life. I admire her as well, but I didn't know what to expect from her as a singer. I hadn't realized her dancing, singing background, until this. What a fabulous surprise! And I wonder why my local "Great American Songbook" radio station isn't giving this air-play!

The pluses: Great music and lyrics, spectacular piano and bass, clarity of sound that puts the listener right next to the stage in an intimate nightclub, beautiful phrasing and perfect pitch--even in spots where others tend to slide up to a note. That aspect of her singing reminded me of the Sinatra approach--absolutely accurate on every note. "Ten Cents A Dance," while a great song and performed wonderfully, prevents the CD from being one that keeps the soft torch mood throughout; the CD liner notes didn't do justice to Ms. Powers in that the quotes from others tended to be somewhat offhand about her singing; there wasn't enough background material on the Ms. Powers, although I did like the details about the songs. Small quibbles that certainly don't effect the sound of the music.

There are a number of cabaret-type singers recording now--many of them working like crazy to sound sultry. Ms. Powers doesn't sound sultry in that commercial sense--she sounds like a woman who has lived a passionate life without ever being sordid about it. The CD is a treat!

Not only is she a great actress and philanthropist but she has a a beautiful singing voice as well. I was privileged to see her perform in Applause in Baltimore. She was absolutely fabulous. Any fan of jazz, blues, or torch will love this cd.

This album often sells in the Nairobi airport for an outrageous 15-20 USD. WHile it is a good album, it is not a 20 USD album... It's popular especially because of the first track- Jambo Jambo.
While the song is a bit cheesy- it is really fun to listen to and can bring back many memories of Kenya- as it is repeatedly sung in Kenyan bars and other places. Other songs on the album- Watoto and Nakupenda Wewe are also enjoyable to listen to. It's a fun album, and a good gift for someone who has been to Kenya. I often give it to friends who have returned and it's quite appreciated.
I would say the Safari band does not represent the best of Kenyan Music, but it is a album with tracks that are laid down well, and songs that stay in your head. Overall a good listen.

Even their harshest critics can't accuse Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops of not trying to have fun. On The Latin Album, they tackle a repertoire that includes big-band favorites and compositions from Piazzolla, Perez Prado, and Aaron Copland (in the form of El Salon México). These are mostly dance tunes, filled with crashing percussion, Latin rhythms, and familiar melodies. To their credit, the Boston Pops get this fiesta right about half the time--opening with Alberto Ginastera's "Malambo," they set a furious, rollicking mood that's heavy on the percussion. They shine on Jacob Gade's "Jalousie" (an early hit for Lockhart predecessor Arthur Fiedler) and on the more atmospheric "Mi Cambio" by César Villalobos. Unfortunately, their arrangement of Piazzolla's "Oblivion" is about as subtle as the music found in soap operas (and about as exciting) and "Perfidia" is a disappointment, "smooth" but hardly sultry. Still, the Pops know how to play their brassy, rhythmic showpieces, and the recorded sound here is excellent. --Jason Verlinde

I bought this CD at a stoop sale for one dollar, and then sold it at a stoop sale for a dollar or two. I am very glad that I did not pay full price (or even half price) for it. I did not think it was a bad CD, but a bland CD. Every track on it I have heard performed better elsewhere. They are like Muzak versions of great Latin works.

Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops, and the guest artists have a hit in this one! I can almost forget the snow outside when I listen to it. I loved "Jalousie!" And Mariachi Cobre stands out on "Granada" and "Son de la Negra." Five star tracks, both of them, with Steve Carrillo's great vocal work on "Granada" and the spirited interchange between the Pops and Mariachi Cobre's brass sections in "Son de la Negra." Purists may object to the combination of Latin music and an orchestra, but I think it's a treat!

    One of Dizzy's Afro-Cuban explorations from 1964, with James Moody on tenor and flute and Kenny Barron on piano. The combination of African and Calypso rhythms makes for exciting, energetic music; highlights include Dizzy's muted solo and Barron's bluesy piano solo on FIESTA MOJO; Moody's robust tenor solo on TRINIDAD, HELLO, a swinging, tension-filled number in ¾ time; both Dizzy's and Moody's work on DON'T TRY TO KEEP UP WITH THE JONSES; and the intensity and drive of Moody's and Barron's solos on the way up-tempo roof-raiser TRINIDAD, GOODBYE. Some of the vocal tracks are only so-so; the humorous POOR JOE reminds me a little bit of Louis Jordan's classic RUN, JOE, but it's only about half as funny. Everyone's got to feel a little bit cheated when they buy a CD and it's only 33 minutes long like this one. But the music should get you dancing, to say the least.

    I bought this recording on the strength of seeing the BBC Jazz 625 video, originally recorded in 1965.

    I guess they were touring the same lp, as a few of the tracks that they played are on this cd.

    The theme structure makes this quite a unique recording.
    The hot flavours of Trinidad and the Carribean are in full display here with the novelty 'Poor Joe,'and the more rhythmic and shufflable 'And then she stopped' and 'Fiesta Mojo.'

    Rudy Collins, Chris White, Kenny Baron, and James Moody make great side men and soloists in their own right.

    A very, light, upbeat, and enjoyable recording

    This is definitely one of Dizzy's best records. The music on Jambo Caribe blends hard swinging jazz with Calypso melodies and African rhythms; and the result is great music. Gillespie's original "Fiesta Mojo," Kenny Barron's "Trinidad, Hello" and "Trinidad, Goodbye," and all of the other songs on this album are excellent calypso-infused jazz tunes on which Gillespie, tenor saxophonist and flautist James Moody, and everyone else improvise brilliantly. Moody, in particular, is in top form with his flute solo on the first track. Kennny Barron is outstanding as a comper and soloist, and Dizzy shines as a composer and improviser throughout this album. Renditions of Calypso singer Joe Willoughby's "Poor Joe," and "Don't Try to Keep Up With the Joneses," add bright vocals by Gillespie to the record. Every song on this album is solid jazz and classic Dizzy. I highly recommend buying this CD to anyone who likes to listen to great jazz or or any kind of Caribbean music. No Dizzy fan should be without it.

    I remember it clearly, as it is a very obscure song. I have it on a compilation of obscure music that was made in the UK... and had heard it for the first time not too long before we rented Dodgeball. I had fallen asleep during the movie, but my at-the-time husband woke me up to show me that the song was in the movie! We thought it was a rather strange pick for a soundtrack, because it's not a well-known piece of music.

    I think it's awesome that Ace released this... however, I'm a bit brought down that it's on CD, and not pressed on vinyl. I think a 45 of this would be more collectible... and judging from the type of people that buy music from the Ace label, people would go for it.

    This is not the song from Dodgeball the Movie. I was very upset to find out that it wasn't. I found the Lyrics by this artist to make sure and those are not any of the lyrics from the movie.

      Loved this! I bought it on impulse and everyone at work keeps borrowing it. It is such a great CD! Fun, spirited, I wish I had more finds like this! I never bought a Mambo CD before so this may be great for the uninitiated.
