Use a Napkin (Not Your Mom!)

Bluegrass and folk singer Kathy Kallick makes a stupendous children's CD with Use a Napkin. The tunes are packed with a jump-up level of energy and while the lyrics move humorously and knowingly through a variety of narratives, they also share the rhythmic bounce and spry spirit of the session. Kallick's core sound is deeply enmeshed in an old-time mandolin, fiddle, guitar, and vocals setup that instantly gets kids dancing. The songs are a mix of traditional ditties, such as "The Crawdad Song" and "Liza Jane," and includes one special cut from the Count Basie songbook ("Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?"), which integrates some kid-chorus effects that will invite sing-alongs. Then there are Kallick's own energetic songs, one of which has her almost nonsensically singing, "Cats and dogs and the chickens that crow / They all know how the zydeco goes," and doing so with an absolute love for music's communicative potential. This is a stellar set. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-05

Um, I think the reviewer below was actually hearing the voices in his head, not the songs of this album, when he heard satanic messages. That's just plain crazy, I'm sorry.

Now, on to better things: this album! Kids music gets exhausting, how many parents have heard Baby Beluga or (God help us!) The Barney Song so many times that they want to pull their hair out? This album is a fabulously refreshing alternative. The melange of American roots music styles on the album (folk to bluegrass to zydeco) make for a great opportunity for parents to introduce their children to open-mindedness about music.

The songs are also funny! Kids and adults alike will appreciate the gentle humor... the title track says it all! They'll learn about history from some songs, manners from others, and they'll enjoy the simple silliness of the rest. The quality of musicianship on the album will please Moms and Dads immensely, as will the fact that the songs are not "dumbed down" for children, who, as we all know, are smarter than some kids' musicians give them credit for.

Pick up this album, and while you're at it, treat yourself and pick up one of Kathy's great albums for grown-ups. You'll be glad you did!

5 out of 5 stars Toe-tappin hits.......2002-02-07

I borrowed this CD from our local public library to entertain my children on a long car ride. Little did I know it would entertain all of us so well. Within a day, my 7 and 2-year olds were singing the songs and requesting their favorites (Smelly Feet and Jackie Robinson). Kallick throws in a little unsolicited history lesson with Amelia Earhart and Jackie Robinson and teaches some wonderful lessons, all the while having a blast. The differing styles of music expose kids to a variety of rythyms and tempos and the lyrics can only be described as playful. My children have been requesting this CD again and again and I'm on my way to buy it right now.

5 out of 5 stars Parent's Perspective.......1999-12-17

This is a great album of children's themes but melodic tunes any parent will thoroughly enjoy and ballads children will want to listen to over and over. Our family takes long trips singing C-H-I-C-K-E-N together and my daughter was inspired to learn more about Amelia Earhart. This is a great CD!
