Hanna-Barbera's Pic-a-Nic Basket of Cartoon Classics [Box set] [Soundtrack]

Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, one of entertainment's most unforgettable duos, go together like peanut butter and jelly, Laverne and Shirley, and Laurel and Hardy. Having made a name for themselves with MGM's Tom and Jerry, the Hanna-Barbera team made history when they ushered Ruff and Reddy, the first made-for-television cartoon, into America's consciousness in late 1957. By 1960, The Flintstones were prime-time entertainment for the whole family, and as with its Hanna-Barbera brethren, the show's musical score not only nudged the laughs, but ingratiated itself into the very fabric of contemporary American life. Inventive, lively, and utterly recognizable, the remastered Hanna-Barbera Pic-A-Nic Basket box set is the mother lode of cartoon music. Handsomely packaged, with a faux basket handle and all, these four discs ambitiously tackle the massive canon largely assembled by lyricist Hanna and composer Hoyt Curtin. Discs one and two concentrate on the classics from the earliest tunes to a slew of Yogi Bear sounds to Space Ghost's theme and the zany Hong Kong Fooey theme. Disc three, an array of woodwinds, heavy loping tuba, poppin' slap-tongue bass clarinet, and rock- and jazz-inflected drum and guitar, pays tribute to the brilliantly animated Flintstones. Disc four, excellent filler for mix tapes, contains nearly 100 tracks of sound effects, from boings, footsteps, and explosions to bits of goofy dialogue. Bright moments are found in the trumpet-happy Jetsons theme, the groovy Scooby Doo main title, and the swingin' "Car Hop Song" from the Flintstones. These sounds, together with a terrific accompanying booklet, are altogether winning. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars two great tunes and the rest stink.......2006-07-13

can you guess what two tunes are the best. well if you guessed scooby doo where are you and the banana splits than you are correct. those tunes rock. all the others suck. five stars for the two tunes and no stars for the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Cartoons ruined my mind.......2006-04-09

Cartoons ruined my mind, back in the 1970s. Now I'm so messed up, I can't write a proper review of this product. Excuse me while I go throw a brick at someone's head. "Boink!!"

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars for quantity.......1999-12-10

Let's face it: no-one in their right mind will sit down and listen to these cds in their entirety. It's not in the nature of the music. But as music to dip into when you need, it's fun.

But shame on Rhino for going only halfway with the packaging. It's a great design ruined by shoddy materials: what's the point of sticking a flimsy cardboard "picnic basket handle" on the box and warning (in tiny lettering on the box) against its use? When I went to pick it up it immediately broke.

4 out of 5 stars A good compilation for both the casual fan & extreme fanatic.......1999-02-18

A wonderful and mostly thorough collection of signature themes and musical cues from the Hanna-Barbera library; with top-notch digital remastering and extensive, informative liner notes. One drawback is the omission of the slightly obscure cartoon themes, notably from the 70s and 80s, in lieu of a generous (and obsessive) compilation of 60s "cartoony" themes and needle-drops. Most of the adventure/superhero themes from the late 60s onward are noticeably absent as well. But the production values are outstanding and the cartoon sound FXs are the best available, bar none (too bad they're not public domain). Hopefully someone from HB and/or Time-Warner is reading this and would consider additional releases to make this a truly complete package.
