Monsters, Inc. Scream Factory Favorites

Scream Factory Favorites sends a gusty second wind blowing around the Monsters, Inc. gang so that they seem never to have clomped off the screen. Credit Riders in the Sky, a cowboy-musician collective of four spiffy if over-the-hill-looking fellows, for twanging up these 13 tracks, instead of letting them go sappy or scary or in any way serious. Randy Newman's movie-derived buddy song, "If I Didn't Have You," the opener, lights a low flame beneath happy-to-be-stuck-with-you sensibilities before a run of crackup wordplay kicks in: "Doo-Wah Diddy Diddy (Mike's Song)" gets a Cyclops-specific reworking ("She looked good, she looked fine / I could not believe my eye"); "I Only Have Eye for You" oozes mush to a "scream come true" whose "kisses taste like glue"; and "Monster ABCs" fondly recalls a school-kid chorus--"A is for Aah!, E is for Eek!," etc. "Lullaby for Boo" breaks from the bogeymen, but, besides a couple of swingin' instrumentals, the rest is pure Disney-Pixar monster mash. It won't deliver you to specific movie scenes the way soundtracks sometimes do, or, spooks aside, send chills up your spine, but it does stand to lift your spirits. It's a forget-your-troubles frolic fit for all ages, and it won't fail to tickle the funny bone of anybody who walked out of the movie feeling less foolish about sleeping with the closet door clamped shut, flashlight in hand. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Funny! .......2006-08-14

I bought this based on the reviews I read applauding the humor of the lyrics and the pop quality of the songs. I love this album and I love the low price. And most importantly, my son dances to the album when I play it for him. I recommend it if you are looking for family friendly music that has a fun quality and clever lyrics.

3 out of 5 stars Confusing .......2006-02-24

The Riders in the Sky are fantastic here as they are on the Woody's Roundup CD but they have an old time western sound to them, and this CD is music from MONSTERS, INC. It was a little confusing for my boys (ages 3 and 2) because they kept telling me they wanted to hear MONSTERS, not WOODY. Fun music, though.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2003-12-29

This wonderful album contains thirteen songs by Riders In The Sky, the same great band you heard on the Toy Story II tape & DVD. With the exception of the first song, all of these songs are new, and are based on the Pixar hit movie, Monsters, Inc. My kids (10 and 12) both love this CD, especially Monster ABCs. For some reason, I had assumed that they would consider this album too babyish for them, but such is not the case. They love this album, and so do I! We highly recommend this album to you and your family.

Oh, by the way, the liner notes contain the words to all of the songs, plus a few nice pictures from Monsters, Inc. My kids love this sort of "extra."

4 out of 5 stars The Further Tales of Sulley and Company........2003-10-05

SCREAM FACTORY FAVORITES is a compilation of songs sung by Riders in the Sky about the characters from MONSTERS, INC. Most of the songs dive a little further into the characters from the movie, while a few just play on some of the characters' familiar characteristics. Most of the songs have a 50s do-wop feel, and not much country twang. There are 13 songs on the cd and the running time is about thirty-five minutes. I've played some of the songs on the web-radio show I host and will probably continue to do so in the future. My favorite songs on the album include:

"I Only Have Eye For You"

"Monsters, Inc. March"

"Paperwork" (Roz's Song)

"The Perfect Roar" (Sulley's Song)

This is a cd that most kids will enjoy and makes a nice gift for any fan of MONSTERS, INC.

5 out of 5 stars Screaming For More Scream Factory Favorites!.......2003-03-01

My three children love this CD. Their mother loves this CD. My children scream when this CD is not playing. Maybe you buy this. Hmmmmmm.

Wonderfully and wittingly written to accompany the great Monsters, Inc. movie, this song collection is a must have! If the little ones don't dance and sing to this one, something's wrong!

4 out of 5 stars Monster Scream-A-Long.......2002-09-02

Following the formula of their previous CD for PIXAR (Woody's Roundup), the Riders in the Sky have created music that extends the story and characters of Monsters, Inc. beyond the film. Staying true to the film though, the music mostly stays away from country and tries for a more 50's doo-wop feeling. Their harmonies work just as good in this style as country and it's good to hear them trying new things.

If you enjoyed the film (and who didn't) then you're sure to be won over by this CD. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the catchy tunes and clever lyrics ("I love to take you dancing and sweep you off your tentacles") which are included in the booklet so you can learn them and sing along. My only complaints are the annoying song LULLABY FOR BOO (the only song not sung by Riders) and the too short running time of 33 minutes.
