Alice in Wonderland [Soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews

Walt Disney had originally toyed with the idea of bringing Lewis Carroll's phantasmagorical classic to the screen in the '30s as one of his first live-action feature films. Paramount beat him to the punch with their 1933 all-star version, but, through patience or sheer stubbornness, Disney finally prevailed, turning the story into one of his studio's string of postwar animated classics. Though somewhat odd by most film musical standards (the songs are sometimes fragmentary and tend to punctuate the story rather than stop it to showcase themselves), the score utilizes Oliver Wallace's playful underscore and no less than eight songwriters (including Mack David, Sammy Fain, Al Hoffman, and Jerry Livingston) to bring Carroll's magical world to life, often using his own verse in the bargain. Marking the first time all of Alice's original music has been available outside the film, this edition presents it in a seamlessly edited manner that both evokes the story's atmospherics and showcases its Carroll-inspired songcraft. --Jerry McCulley

The word "confessional" is frequently applied to folk of all stripes, including folk-rock and folk-pop, which is where Jewel comes in. Even within the bounds of folk, however, her music is more nakedly confessional than most. (Too nakedly, some have carped.) Along with a coterie of Nashville pros, she began her latest musical journey by laying down another introspective song cycle in the vein of 1995's Pieces of You. Dissatisfied with the results, the Texas-based artist scrapped that effort and re-recorded with Rob Cavallo (Green Day). This lends her sixth album the expected rock edge, but Jewel hasn't changed her spots. If anything, she sounds more like, well, Jewel than she did on dance-oriented departure 0304. She's still pop star ("Fragile Heart"), sensitive folkie ("Long Slow Slide"), and scrappy country gal ("Stephenville, TX"). Her Joni Mitchell-esque soprano soars as high as ever, with more of a sardonic Dylan chaser than before. What's changed is that maturity has granted Jewel, now in her early 30s, greater perspective--"Growing up is not an absence of dreaming," she states in the title track--and a sense of humor missing from her more earnest early work. On "Satellite," for instance, written when she was 18, but revamped since, she notes that "the Pope," "rock and roll," "Valium," even "Miss Cleo" can't fix her broken heart. In her statement about the album, Jewel claims that, after years of ups and downs, she's "not broken, just more myself." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Jewel is about to deliver her most personal and autobiographical record so far-Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. Not content to relegate herself to a traditional music arena, or to be typecast, Jewel has established herself as a culturally significant and relevant brand. Author, songwriter, actress, poet-there are no limits to how Jewel can and will deliver her message. The underlining truth that ties it all together is the integrity of that message.

3 out of 5 stars This is ok..........2007-07-15

I LOVE Jewel but this album sure doesnt beat Spirit or Peices of you. I dunno, its hard to explain, its like the songs are a bit generic, Goodbye Alice in Wonderland is good, and so is a Good Day. I think maybe its just lacking a bit of soul, it just doesnt seem alot like the old Jewel we are all used too.

5 out of 5 stars #1 Jewel Fan.......2007-07-05

Jewel will always have a special place in my heart. I've loved her music since the day I heard "You Were Meant For Me" come on the radio. I wasn't too fond of 0304 but in Goodbye Alice in Wonderland she brings a bit more of the real Jewel back into our hearts. I really enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Underrated.......2007-06-21

Jewel through many a curveball back in 2003 when she released 0304, which took her trademark confessional lyrics and set them against a mostly upbeat(and occasionally dance-driven)beat, much to the consternation of many of her fans. I was in the minority, as it was in my opinion her best album to that point, and follow-up GOODBYE ALICE IN WONDERLAND is on an even level of quality with that disc. Returning more to the sound of her THIS WAY album, Jewel again keeps things rather upbeat(musically) this time around, not thanks to dance backdrops but with the addition of a slightly harder rock sound, probably due to producer Rob Cavallo's hand in things. It's a good fit for the singer, who rocks out harder than ever on such tracks as "Only One Too", "Works Get In The Way", and "Drive To You". It also provides her with her most accessible set of songs to date, which is a shame considering that the album has been all but ignored since its' release--as was noted elsewhere, nearly every song here could have been a single. Too bad her record company didn't have the good sense to see that.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel the way I know and love her.......2007-04-28

I was aghast at 0304 when it seemed Jewel gave up her folk music so I was more than relieved by Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. I was like, oh thank GOOOOOOOD Jewel did another album that shows off her great songwriting and guitar talents. It was really hard to watch her video for Intuition with the back up dancers and trashy wardrobe. Jewel is beautiful just the way she always has been. Love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Still Shining.......2007-04-24

I think it strange that Jewel's latest album did not top the charts. It was certainly masterful in design and execution. And therein lies the problem. I suggest that she do another tour and record a live album with some new material. We all know how wonderful her concerts can be, and how beautifully her voice can soar underneath the stars and trees... I caught her act in Central Park, and of course ..... I just had to say yes to all of that heartfelt emotion that poured over me like a pristine waterfall - splendid Jewel!

    5 out of 5 stars Interpretación Exquisita.......2001-12-28

5 out of 5 stars You must buy this!.......2001-02-22

There's not much I can say about this album. It's perfect. Completely a cappella, it shows off everything that make the King's Singers one of the world's most masterful vocal ensembles. My two personal favorite tracks are "She's Like the Swallow" and "If Music Be the Food of Love." The solo on "She's Like the Swallow," a sad Canadian folksong, is very beautiful. Tracks such as "La valse a mille temps" and "Down With Love" add a certain amount of humor to the collection.I do not regret purchasing this album in any way. It represents some of the best work that the King's Singers have to offer. You must buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Very, very, very (did I mention Very?) good!.......1999-10-22

A wonderful selection, beautifully performed! Some of these songs I have wanted to hear and own for so long!

An Silvia (Schubert) = Who is Sylvia: they sing a voice-only arrangement that is arguably an improvement of Schubert (okay, pax, you purists). As you may know, this is a setting by Schubert of a poem by Shakespeare. It is just marvellous.

In my estimation, this CD is worth getting for Sylvia alone.

      Product Description

This premiere John Barry CD features two Warner Bros. albums from a period of great creativity for the composer: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1972) and Petulia (1968). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was a musical telling of Lewis Carroll's famous story, with a star-packed British cast including Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore, Michael Crawford and Ralph Richardson. John Barry collaborated with lyricist Don Black ("Born Free," "Diamonds Are Forever") on the delightful song-score. Petulia was Barry's second collaboration with director Richard Lester (following The Knack, How to Get It), a serious, contemporary drama set in San Francisco starring Julie Christie, George C. Scott and Richard Chamberlain. It is regarded as one of the best films of the era, with a sophisticated flashback structure (and cinematography by Nicolas Roeg) anchored by Barry's melancholy and melodic score. In addition to the haunting main theme, Petulia features a distinctive figure for saxophones anticipating Diamonds Are Forever, and several pieces of vintage Barry source music -- low-key jazz tunes that rank with the best instrumental music of the era, and echo some of the source cues of the James Bond films. It comes with new liner notes by Jon Burlingame, and is remastered from the original 1/4" stereo album tapes.

5 out of 5 stars "Let's sing a song about all of us".......2007-04-11

Alice's Adventures In Wonderland classic novel is truely one my most favorite children stories in english literature, and Disney did the story proud like no other Hollywood production ever did. The soundtrack is welcome, like so many recent Disney cd soundtracks, that they include opening credits, intro music, background melodies (that may get lost in noisy movie), occasional dialogue (to move the momentum of scene), and of course, the beloved songs Disney fans cherish around the globe. I bought this particular cd at the 20th Century Music Shop at Disneyland Main St. USA, and would like to start my own cd library of similar soundtracks from other animated movies. Highly recommended, and majestically packaged!

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-08-19

Another fine job at Disney Soundtrack restoration by master restoration producer Randy Thornton. He has taken music recorded in the 1940's and cleaned it up quite well. The movie's style required music that jumped out at you in short bursts and then dissapeared again, so most songs are very short in the movie. Randy tried to restore these songs to the length that they were originally recorded. The songs have a habit of jumping in and out of the underscore. Unlike many of Randy's other projects you do hear bits of sound effects now and then but rarely, most of the original material to use for this CD was lost to time and was no longer in the archives. Seven writers composed the music for the film, including the "UN-Birthday" song which was written by the songwriters that were working on Cinderella at the time. Most of the songs were composeded by Bob Hilliard and Sammy Fain. Jerry Colonna, Ed Wynn, Vera Felton, Sterling Holloway, all sung in this movie along with many more. There is a great 15 page booklet with lyrics, great liner notes, and art including the always illusive concept art that Disney history buffs treasure. Quite a few novelty songs were created for this movie at Walt's request, and the movie featured 14 original songs, the most any Disney animated film had ever had. All total the CD lists 23 tracks and 1 hour of music. Overall a gem of Disney history and very fun to listen to. Very affordable too but buy it before it goes out of release.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to listen to!.......2003-12-19

Disney's ALICE IN WONDERLAND makes a terrific soundtrack CD for several reasons. First, it has a delightful score, with such classics as "All in a Golden Afternoon," "I'm Late," and "The Unbirthday Song" -- not to mention "The Mad Tea Party," an absurdly hilarious musical scene. Second, it has one of the greatest vocal casts Disney ever assembled, led by the innocent-sounding Katherine Beaumont as Alice and the looney-voiced, giggling Ed Wynn as the Mad Hatter. And thirdly, the CD is "produced" in such a way that the music is practically continuous, providing an experience quite different from that of watching the movie. The ALICE IN WONDERLAND soundtrack is a fun listening experience that brings back many fond childhood memories for me. I would recommend it to anyone who loves the movie.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD, but..........1999-02-25

I wish there'd been more liner notes about the brilliant Oliver Wallace, Bob Hilliard, and Sammy Fain. I also wished they'd included on this CD the MANY cool outtakes provided on the Laserdisc Box Set available.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite disney movies on a cd at last!.......1998-09-21

This is a terrific collection, and I was waiting for it for quite some time! It's got the main title, all the major songs, instramentals, and all the little fun songs, like the cheshire cat's "Twas Brillig.." It's even got the Catapillar's poem! It's fun to sing along with too! I'm so glad this was released, and I recommend it highly. Especially to those of us who love those disney films from the 50's! You'll love it!

It has all the songs and even the interesting music that happens as Alice wanders through Wonderland... There are some songs were I wish they had the characters talking instead of just the background music. But this cd is a good one to have!

            Album Description

The music of Irving Fine, wrote Aaron Copland, "wins us over through its keenly conceived sonorities and its fully realized expressive content" and is notable for "elegance, style, finish and a convincing continuity." Fine (1914-1962) was an American composer of masterfully crafted scores who displayed a remarkable gift for lyricism, writing music that inevitably "sings". This CD documents an important occasion for Fine's music-the deposition of all of the composer's scores, sketches and memorabilia at The Library of Congress. A distinguished audience gathered at the Library's Coolidge Auditorium to hear a variety of Fine's music-ranging from his choral masterpiece of 1944, The Choral New Yorker, to the chamber works that are among Fine's most frequently heard compositions today. This CD celebrates the occasion, but more importantly, reminds us of the gifts of one of mid-twentieth century America's leading artists.
