Blue Suede Shoes: Elvis Songs for Kids

It's been done before but never this adorably: Music for Little People's Blue Suede Shoes: Elvis Songs for Kids invokes the spirit of the King with 12 rockin' tunes, all belted with gusto by a gang of kids--some, by the sound of it, as young as age 6. Mostly they tackle the megahits. "Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel," and "Jailhouse Rock" all get covered--but if the song selection isn't much of a shocker, what is surprising is the soul some of these slick kiddie crooners deliver. Both "All Shook Up" and "Stuck on You" are powerhouses of the kind that send visions of swiveling little hips and painted-on sideburns swirling in your head. Other selections, such as "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" and "Baby, Let's Play House," are performed in a sweeter, cutesier style, but that's not to say they're weak by comparison. Nor do they contribute to a jumbled, uneven mix. Instead, the suit-yourself interpretations lend this album the feel of a junior talent show, the kind nobody wants to judge because every contestant deserves to be keeper of the crown. Grown-up Elvis enthusiasts with kids will be first in line to pick up a copy of Blue Suede Shoes (what better way to be sure their hero doesn't leave the building, at least for another generation?), but anybody of a mind to make music history a chapter in his or her child's education ought to check it out, too. That doesn't mean kids too young to swallow such a culturally significant discussion ought to be excluded, though. One spin of this thoroughly rollicking album and they're sure to do what comes naturally: Shake, rattle, and roll to a handful of songs that set the world on fire. --Tammy La Gorce

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed in this MFLP title.......2005-03-29

Our family must own 15 or 16 MFLP cd's. This is the first truly disappointing one. It is way too "cutesy" - many of the others have kids singing the songs, but in this one, the kids ruin the songs. I know that it could have been done better, because we have many other MFLP albums where children have sung classic rock n' roll and its been great. Stay away from this one! (Its gets 2 stars mainly because the music is great.) The album needs to be remixed and rerecorded. It could definitely be better.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!!.......2003-08-02

I think it's great!! All of the did did a job well done. Especially 9yr old Morgan Burkes version of "All Shook Up". He had an amazing voice for being so young. I'd recommend this CD to everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quality CD that makes you & your kids sing/dance!.......2003-06-11

As the previous reviewer points out, there's no actual Elvis singing on this CD which is exactly why you should buy it for your kids! The recording quality of this CD is very good and the quality of the kids singing is also very good. It's all kids (no adult lead with kids in background) which definitely gets approval from our toddler. As you can see from the list of songs, the songs included on this CD are Elvis's top hits that will make you want to sing and dance. Your kids will love it and you'll love it too!

1 out of 5 stars I should have read the reviews!.......2003-01-13

Nobody can do Elvis like Elvis! I am not really a big fan but kids will love the real thing. This compilation album for kids has none of the spark of Elvis. Elvis songs are short and toe-tapping. Kids do not need a special version.

1 out of 5 stars Kids music collections.......2001-03-27

I was looking for a collection of oldies for my children. While the titles were great, it was a huge dissapointment not to hear Elvis himself.
