Nothing to Lose
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
John McCutcheon made his name as a traditional folk performer--playing banjo, acoustic guitar, fiddle and hammer dulcimer and writing songs of domestic warmth and political protest in the Appalachian mode. He was smart enough, however, to recognize the contradictions of performing rootsy, leftist "people's music" for the mostly middle-aged, highly educated, upper-middle-class audience of modern singer-songwriter folk music. He tried to bust out of that bind with his 1994 album, Between the Eclipse, which set his songs in electrified folk-rock arrangements played by the likes of Nanci Griffith guitarist Pete Kennedy, Bruce Hornsby saxophonist Bobby Read and Mary Chapin Carpenter singer Jon Carroll. Now McCutcheon has followed up that effort with Nothing To Lose, a similar project with the same musicians. The irony, of course, is that this old-fashioned, refined brand of roots-rock, with its echoes of Hornsby, Griffith and Bruce Springsteen, merely attracts a slightly larger version of the same audience drawn to singer-songwriter folk. Nonetheless, this audience deserves quality songs as much as any, and McCutcheon delivers the goods.--Geoffrey Himes

In an industry dogged too much by cookie-cutter artists, Mat Kearney is a real breath of fresh air. Let's be honest: What music exec would ever suggest that a blending of John Mayer-like subtle pop, Toby Mac-like rap, and Chris Martin-esque vocals could be rolled together for a winning combination? Stylistically, that's what we get with Kearney's outstanding major-label debut Nothing Left to Lose. Nearly half of this album is culled from Kearney's Bullet release (2004), an independent label breakthrough success for the singer-songwriter. These gems include the pedestrian "Undeniable," the pseudo Coldplay ringer "In The Middle," and the my-girl-is-my-country metaphor of "Girl America." Kearney moves away from his hip-hop sensibilities into a more guitar-friendly pop vein on newer tracks "Crashing Down," "Can't Break Her Fall," "Where We Gonna Go From Here," and "Nothing Left To Lose." The starkly moving "All I Need" will grab your attention as Kearney sings of a couple whose efforts to escape their own relationship problems mirror their attempts to flee a natural disaster. One of the most attractive elements throughout is a sound unlike any other in Christian music. While Kearney does little to mask his own faith in the interest of gaining crossover appeal, it's his multi-flavored art that should draw listeners from all angles. Heart-gripping at moments, thought-provoking at others, Nothing Left to Lose is intelligent throughout and one of the top releases of the year thus far. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
A Complete Album from Start to Finish.......2007-06-06
I bought three CDs this morning for a six hour road trip: Fray, Howie Day and Nothing Left to Lose. I played Nothing Left to Lose twice from start to finish and only went back to the other two for the songs I liked.
Listening to Nothing Left to Lose I was reminded of the the first time I heard to Born to Run. Major talent. Great songs.
Sending copies to friends now and an extra one for me because I know I will wear this one out quickly.
A "surprising" good album.....start to finish........2007-06-02
I say "surprising" only because this type of music is a little out of my normal element (I typically listen to industrial, dance-electronica....etc...but that's another story). "Nothing Left to Lose" was really the reason why I purchased the album and, after listening to the whole CD several times, I've realized that there are definitely other songs worth noting.
Some may be turned off by his "rap" style and feel that it's used to cover up some of his songwriting or singing weakneses. I think it's done just right and he doesn't get too caught up in it. Right when you think he's been talking awhile he starts up with the melody/harmony and brings you right back into the song. It's a very nice combination.
I purchased 2 other new albums at the same time as this one, but I can't seem to take Mat's out of the player. THAT, for me, is a sign of a strong album top-to-bottom. As most outlets are selling this album cheaper than the "normal" CD, I would highly recommend giving this one a try....you won't be disappointed.
Just buy it........2007-05-30
I purchased "Nothing Left to Lose" for the title track and "Undeniable." What I found was a rare CD I can listen to, front to back, over and over again. Some may find his approach unconventional, and it is, but I find it brilliant as well. Wonderful music, pure poetry for lyrics... just wow. My absolute favorite track is "In The Middle," with "Bullet" running a close second. Mat Kearney is unique and extremely talented. Just take my lead and give this one a shot.
Good purchase.......2007-05-26
I had absolutely no problems at all with my purchase. It arrived on time and was what I expected. I would recommend.
One Of A Kind.......2007-05-21
I was immediately taken aback by the hip-hop/rap elements of this production, but I soon came to appreciate that it serves the interests of the music perfectly. It's certainly not used as a crutch by Kearney, as he possesses tremendous pipes.
I also hear elements of Coldplay ("In the Middle") and Oasis, and while some might knock Kearney for being derivative, I ask, where else can you hear these sounds combined in one expertly crafted package?
There is nothing else out there quite like this gem from Mat Kearney. I'm so glad I found it, albeit somewhat belatedly.

Riding the momentum of the hit single "Learn to Fly," which hit No. 1 on the modern-rock charts long before this album's release, the Foo Fighters' third record is unarguably its most refined and poppy. The ominous riff that the opens "Stacked Actors" (which sounds like something Kurt Cobain could have hacked out on Nirvana's gnarly In Utero) is pretty much a red herring. The 10 tunes that follow are a succession of hook-laden pop songs tarted up with guitarist-vocalist (and former Nirvana drummer) Dave Grohl's thick guitars and increasingly sugar-sweet vocals. Nearly every cut on There Is Nothing Left to Lose has the potential of following "Learn to Fly" up the charts. The production is big and friendly and songs like "Generator," "Aurora," and "Headwires" just melt in your mouth. And even though the Foo Fighters' latest is seductively sweet in sound, there are just enough rough edges and lyrical angst to keep things interesting. --Adem Tepedelen
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Rock Albums of the '90s.......2007-01-27
Probably the only album that I can honestly say does not contain a weak song on the entire cd.
An incredible combination of lyrics, vocals, electric guitar, and drums that accompany each other perfectly...which seems a difficult task in this music genre. For me personally, it often seems that in the albums of other bands, either the vocals, guitar, or drums override the other two...but not in this album.
Dave Grohl has outdone himself (yet again). It's the musical version of caffeine and an electric album to work out to. Taylor Hawkins' drums are solid, powerful, and clean (listen to the first 20 seconds of Gimme Stitches and you will see what I mean).
Although "Learn to Fly" is probably the most recognized track (with an incredibly funny music video to match)...most of the other songs are equally memorable and high energy and all are worth listening to again and again.
Plenty to gain.......2006-11-10
One of the best young bands to come our way in a very long time.
A perfect blend of pop and rock.......2006-06-11
The Foo Fighters certainly had a lot to prove when they released this gem back in 99'. Avoiding the sophmore slump in a big way, Dave and the gang released one of the top albums of the 90's (and of all time in many rock fan's eyes). Would "There Is Nothing Left to Lose" compare to "The Colour and the Shape", or would it be a dissapointment. Well, although the album hasn't been heralded over time as TCATS has, it certainly deserves to be. Every track here is a fantastic blend of pop and rock, from Stacked Actors to M.I.A. The highlight is of course Aurora, a little love song Dave wrote about his life in Seattle, that just happens to be this Foo Fighter fanatics favorite of all time. The truth is this isn't the Colour and the Shape. However TINLTL certainly deserves to be recognized as one of the greatest albums of the 90's, and one of Dave Grohl's most wonderful achievements.
Very Enjoyable!!!!.......2006-05-21
The number of cd's that an individual owns is not an indicator of that person's musical expertise-it just means that the person likes to shop for music. Everyone has different musical tastes and will view music differently. This is not my favorite Foo Fighters cd-"The Colour and the Shape" and "In Your Honor" are..but this is a favorite in my collection..of close to 2000 cd's.
Enjoyable.......2006-04-06
This is a solid release for the Foo Fighters. This perhaps stands as one of their best albums, from the totally awesome opening song "Stacked Actors" to the slower concluding song "MIA", I say this isn't a "boring and predictable" album. What, did the person below me know every single chord Dave was going to play in advance? Please, it doesn't matter if you have 2000 or 2000000 CDs, anyone with a remote taste for rock music should like at least 3 songs on TINLTL.
Like I mentioned above, the opening song "Stacked Actors" is truely amazing, with it's head-banging chorus and soft and dreamy verses. "Breakout" is also fast-paced, and of course it's followed by the big single "Learn To Fly", which is how I was introduced to the Foo Fighters. Actually, every song on here I like, so I won't bother naming any more. Indeed, it's a rare thing for me to be able to enjoy listening to a whole ablum without skipping any songs.
As a whole, I think the Foo Fighters are a very mature band, and I appreciate the fact that they don't need to swear every 3 words in order to have cool songs. And don't be fooled: Nirvana was an entirely different kind of band than the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl is awesome on drums, though, I must admit. So anyways, the Foo Fighters are worth getting into, because they always have solid releases and are just fun to listen to. Pick this one up, you'll like it.

Customer Reviews:
And everything to gain.......2002-06-06
John McCutcheon figured he had nothing to lose by crafting an excellent collection of tunes that veered from his usual niche of traditional folk music. And he was right: McCutcheon proves that he can arrange, perform, and sing electrified folk-rock, and does so with verve and gusto. He taps into the style and substance favored by peers such as John Hiatt, Boz Scaggs, and Bonnie Raitt and delivers an original, fresh-sounding set of songs.
If you a hard core fan of McCutcheon expecting banjo, fiddle, and dulcimer, park your expectations. Yes, there are dulcimers and acoustic guitars, but these are not the primary focus. Instead prime your ears for a collection that runs the gamut from the reflective shimmering folk tracks "Wish You Goodnight" to the piano ballad "Here on the Islands" to the jazz-tinged "Paint Me a Picture." A crew of stellar session musicians brings the songs to life, adding electric guitars, keyboards, sax, synthesizers, percussion, and wonderful harmony vocals.
He covers the cannon of themes that commonly loom during middle age: loss of family and friends, life's lessons, love (both lost and found), leisure, and wonder. If the themes of poverty and loss at first seem too hard to listen to, listen again: McCutcheon's optimism and his ethusiasm cannot be suppressed.

A GOOD LITTLE ROOTS ROCKIN' BAND.......2001-06-15
In 1979 Steve Forbert started gathering musicians to form a new backing band to go on tour with him that year. After the Forbert tour, these guys decided they wanted to stay together, so they started this band the Skeletons. All I can say is thank you Steve Forbert! The Skeletons have quietly rolled along touring and recording great little indie records over the years since 1979. They are a well respected and sought after band who have backed artists such as Dave Alvin, Syd Straw on her classic album "War and Peace", and bluesman Clarence Brewer on his album "King Clarence", which is a gem of an album. In 1997 the Skeletons recorded "Nothing To Lose", which sounds like a very appropriate title for this little known bands newest record. With the bigger record label Hightone releasing this, at least their getting a little more of the recognition they deserve. I've enjoyed listening to this cd over these past few years. It's pure fun. This is a very tight and versatile band. They deliver a generous helping of rock and roll with songs like "DOWNHEARTED", which reminds me of something that could have come right out of the late 70's pop scene. "TEARDROP CITY" is a tune that sounds very much like some of the more tasteful american pop rock of the mid-60's. They do a couple very nice mid-tempo rockers with "MAD OLD LADY" and the very catchy IT'S OK TO BE LONELY". They do a little country rock with "COUNTRY BOYS DON'T CRY". They do a great ballad and my favorite here with "PAY TO PLAY". And they even do a mean little surf instrumental with "TUBB'S THEME". With "Nothing to Lose" you get a little of everything, and that's what makes this such a fun listen. If you like this album, you might like some of the Skeleton's side projects. Their guitar player D. Clinton Thompson did a project a few years ago with a band he started called the Park Central Squares, which is another good album if you can find it. Another side project is a band called the Morells, which is basically the whole Skeleton crew doing a rockabilly album under another name. Like I said, these guys are versatile. If you want their best album though, look mo further. Nothing to Lose is their best so far.
Pleasant Listening.......2001-01-21
I tracked this album down and bought it because the Skeletons backed Syd Straw on War and Peace, playing with an energy there which added much to her songs. I don't find that energy here. The songs roll past, well-played, well-written and pleasant enough, but nothing grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go, especially after four or five listenings over a couple of week. It's a democratic band for sure. Three write or co-write, and all four take turns singing lead. Keyboardist Joe Terry has two of the three best songs, Mad Old Lady and Whiffle Ball; the other is Pay to Play. If they really needed to record Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, why not I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight instead of the eminently forgettable Teardrop City? Heard in a bar, with a couple micro brews under your belt, these guys would probably sound like the best band in the world. (And I gather that's why SS got them for War and Peace.) It just doesn't translate to CD.
Lou Whitney is the coolest guy in the world!.......1998-06-24
I was overjoyed when I saw that the Skeletons were back together again and had released this new album. In my humble opinion, this is the best Skeletons album to date and I, for one, am begging for more! This album grabs you and doesn't let go. Its got basically no slow spots at all and I find myself listening to the entire album straight through regularly. I strongly recommend it to any Skeletons fan or anyone who is interested in being introduced to Missouri's finest roadhouse musicians.

Can't Hold Back - Part 2.......2004-09-18
In the late 80's, MANY artists put out very poppy albums which rocked less hard. Genesis did it with "Invisible Touch", 38 Special with "Rock & Roll Strategy" etc. While many people lament this style, I actually prefer it, due in part to it being my introduction to many of these artists.
Eddie Money took the more melodic, ballad-leaning rock approach to his big comeback 1986 CD "Can't Hold Back" which, although it still rocked, resembled straight 80's pop as much as it did his hard rock-tinged albums half a decade earlier, such as "No Control."
Two years later, he continued this style on "Nothing To Lose," and, although it's not quite as good this time around, it's still a great collection of underrated songs you're probably not gonna find on any of his 37 hits compilations.
1. Walk on Water -- The album could hardly open any better than with this very 80's sounding, melodic arena rocker. Though it's the one fairly recognizable hit, it sadly seems to have dropped off the face of radio playlists now.
2. Magic -- The first pop ballad, which reminds me alot of Bruce Hornsby, with its soft background guitar, sax and piano. With its pleasant sounding lyrics about falling in love, I'd even consider this to be bordering on soft rock, but I still love it.
3. The Love in Your Eyes -- Probably one of the least recognized hits in Eddie's career. The late 80's pop sound is very prevalent here in this guitar and drum based, mid-tempo lite power ballad.
4. Let Me In -- This is a very unique, saxophone based pop/rocker which became a small hit. The verses even feature Eddie talking and telling a story of walking around his old hometown. I guess this is his rap song, LOL.
5. Boardwalk Baby -- A sweet, basic sounding pop ballad of devotion and romance with background sax and keyboards. Though it's quite different from most of his well-known songs, it's no less good.
6. Forget About Love -- For better or worse, this fast-paced rocker really offsets the previous track nicely. In this song, Eddie tells his cheating girl to get lost. Though it's still keyboard-based, the steady guitar line and hard rock solo at the end would probably find favor with some of his earlier fans.
7. Pull Together -- Another ballad-tinged saxophone based pop/rocker about staying together through hard times.
8. Far Cry From a Heartache -- Somewhat of a change of pace from the happy pop sound in most of the album. This is a little bit of a dark, sparse sounding mid tempo, lighter pop/rocker with background electric guitar and keyboards.
9. Bad Boy -- The pace changes again with this medium tempo barroom sounding hard rock number about a persistent troublemaker. Sounds kinda like something that could've come from the 70's.
10. Dancing With Mr. Jitters -- The closer is somewhat of a clunker. Another darker tune with a background bassline and sax that doesn't quite know if it wants to be a ballad or uptempo.
In all, despite similarities to "Can't Hold Back," I wouldn't call this an exact copy of it. Though that one has more hits and a slightly stronger overall feel, this is is actually a bit more unique and varied.
In fact, after the typical pop/rock anthem "Walk On Water," the entire CD differs a bit from his typical Loverboy meets Bob Seger arena rock style. Now that I think about it, many people who don't even listen to this type of music could find something they liked here.
Blues/oldies fans might get into the last three tracks. Mulletheads who weren't exactly pop fans could dig "Forget About Love" and "Bad Boy." Soft rock and ballad lovers would probably like "Magic" and "Boardwalk Baby." R&B and straight pop fans could like "Love in Your Eyes" and "Let Me In."
Great Rock Music.......2004-03-15
I used to Love putting this album on. Unfortunately, I only
have it on vinyl & Haven't heard it for about 10 years!
It's easily my Favorite Eddie Money Record. "Let me in" is a
mean mid-Tempo Rocker. All of side 2 is easy to Like.
Overall, a little Heavier than usual for Eddie, But still
classic AOR FM Rock - produced 1986.
40 y.o. Fan !
Awesome.......2003-12-04
A must have for Eddie Money fans. Get it used at Amazon while you still can. It is out of print. I love all the songs. They are very typical of Eddie's style, which is just fine with me.

When will Ritchie Kotzen get the credit he deserves?.......2007-06-09
THE BAND: Ritchie Kotzen (guitars, vocals), Taka Tamada (guitars), Ari Baron (bass), Thr3e (drums & percussion).
THE DISC: (2005) 12 tracks clocking in at approximately 40 minutes. Included with the disc is a 3-page foldout containing song titles/credits, song lyrics, one band photo, and equipment used. Recorded at Headroom, Inc (N. Hollywood, CA). Label - Locomotive Records.
COMMENTS: Kotzen's prowess on the guitar is a given. His albums with Poison and Mr. Big were underrated and never considered mainstream. His solo albums have a modest underground following. Yet, outside his peers and others in the music circle, Kotzen eludes the limelight. There's no denying the boy can shred... but why isn't he getting the recognition he deserves? Perhaps this is part of his allure. Forty Deuce (the band, not the Las Vegas or Hollywood nightclub) may have come and gone on one album. As of 2007, the future is unknown. The songs here are gritty, catchy, soulful and melodic. Similarities to Soundgarden, Mr. Big, Velvet Underground (and G 'N R), and Bang Tango. To me, Kotzen's vocals fall somewhere between Chris Cornell and Sammy Hagar in tone and delivery. Kotzen's relies on heavy guitars, lots of fuzz and distortion, and a few meaningful ballads. The album kicks off with a bang (not including track one - a 19 second intro) with "Oh My God" - easily the catchiest tune on the disc, but destined to never be played on the radio "as is" due to Kotzen dropping the F* bomb a minimum of 10 times. The next best songs are the rockers - "Start It Up", "Stand Up" and perhaps the heaviest song on the album, "Next To You". As hard as the album starts, it definitely quiets down at the end. The last 3 tracks ("Standing In The Rain", "Wanted" and the title track) would nicely fit into the power ballad category. All good songs, but with a much softer and soulful feel. The entire "Nothing To Lose" album has a very gritty basement feel to it. No keyboards, not a whole lot of overdubbing or layers upon layers of guitars... just 4 guys in a Hollywood studio jamming like they only know how. The one and only thing that brings this album down a notch is Kotzen's vocals... unlike his guitar, his singing has a somewhat limited range. "Nothing To Lose" is a good rock album, and at this point it's a shame Kotzen & Co can't/won't strike a deal with a major label (4+ stars).
Best album I've bought in a looooong time.......2006-10-22
I really didn't expect this to be anywhere near as good as it is. In fact, I expected to buy this, listen once or twice, then file it away like I have most of Richie Kotzen's solo discs. Man was I in for a surprise.
This album is amazing. Oh My God is an all out rocker that opens the disc and is one of those songs you can't get our of your head once you've heard it. Start it Up, Stand Up, and Famous are also fantastic.
I don't this this group got any kind of attention or label support. In fact, I don't even think they're still a group. If this is just a one-off, it is truly a shame, because this is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time.
My favorite rock album of 2005.......2006-01-31
Richie Kotzen has done it again. Another incredible album. Every song is well written and played. A true rock classic.
Forty.5 Deuce stars...this CD cooks like nothing you've heard all year.......2005-10-02
This CD is a contender for album of the year. I may by a bit bias as I am a huge Richie Kotzen fan but then again I couldn't get into his last CD, Get Up, it was good but it was no Slow, or even Change, which both were fantastic. Forty Deuce is Richie's new band. Yeah, it's his band name, but let me make one thing crystal clear, this is 100 % Richie Kotzen. The bozo below me who recently reviewed this describes this as "nu-metal" or Deftones sounding??!!?? WTF is this guy talking about, he probably has even heard the mudic. This CD is 100 % kick-ass ROCK, and it is awesome from beginning to end. In fact, the 1st song Oh My God is my favorite Richie song of all time. I am not kidding, if you know how Richie's music, and lyrics have been in the past when this guy is down and out on love (i.e. Let's say Goodbye or Dont Wanna Lie from Slow, Lose Again from What Is, Change or High from Change, etc.), Oh My God is his most perfect song to reflect the mistakes love can make. Richie kicks himself in the ass on this song and it is a crusher and it totally rocks. Cuss words are all over this song, as well as several other choice F words fly about this CD. What I like about this CD, is Forty Deuce is Richie's band. he has another guitar player, named Taka, a bassist named Ari, and a drummer Thr3e. This enabled Richie is rock hard and all out, because on Richie's solo releases he plays all instruments, and he just follows a familiar pattern or rhythm with alot of the songs on his solo releases. Forty Deuce lets Richie just rip it out, emotionally, lyrically, agressively, this is a hard rocking release yet, it is familiar territory, it doesn't vere off into being too heavy or metal, it's just kick ass rock n roll. Other songs that rock are I Still, Start It Up, Complicated (another Richie classic), Say, heaven, Stand Up, Next To Me, Standing in the Rain, wanted, and Nothing to Lose. If you are a fan of Richies or you want some kick ass Rock I gaurantee you wont be disappointed with this CD, I am not. I love it, and Richie just keeps hitting Grand Slams with each release! Love ya man!
Not the right stuff for me.......2005-09-09
I'm sorry, but i really didn't like this album. Although there is an interesting aproach to this "new metal" kinda thing (is a sort of Deftones style but more hard rock), the songs didn't fullfilled my taste. Anyway, i believe it's been a good thing of Richie to discover new muscial horizons, which is in fact, a typically Richie Kotzen thing to do. So, i respect that very much. If that's the pattern, then i'll just wait what musical challenge is next for Richie. That's all folks!
PS: I would recomend this cd to any hard rocker, hehe.
