Under One Sky is an effort to revitalize and reinvent traditional Native American flute in modern settings that include contemporary instrumental, world, ambient, and even a little country. Intriguing backdrops are found on Robert Mirabal's atmospheric "Popay Runner," Mary Youngblood's dreamy "Yuba," People of the Willows' gently swelling and subsiding "Sanish Remembered," and Jeff Ball's hopeful "Free to Climb." While uneven, Under One Sky should nevertheless draw new listeners to the beguiling sounds of the Native American flute. --Bryan Reesman

All I can say is, "WOW"!!!My favorite track from this CD is "Break The Spell".The first track "Under One Sky" is a song perfect for a sunny day!"Nasca Lines" is a song for people that like groovy middle eastern music."Nueve Puertas(Nine Doors)" is a song that reminds me of such happy memories. It is a perfect song for Summer, and as well as The Weather Channels Local Forecast Segment!"Here Comes Trouble" is a song for people that LOVEE Rock and Roll.My favorite song "Break The Spell" is the best song on this CD!I just love the guitar work on from Brian Hughes on this song.It is a happy and relaxing song that will make you think of a very sunny day on the beach in the middle of Summer!"An Angel's Wish" is a beautifully composed song, but a bit slow."Thin Blue Line" is a very cool song that was featured many times on The Weather Channels Local Forecast Segment. It is a song perfect elevator music song.In conclusion, this CD deserves 5 stars out of 5 because it is well put and it deserves its high rating!Get this CD today!!!
Extremely Disappointed.......2004-04-18
I love the song "NASCA LINES" which I first heard on a Putamayo world music CD, so I ordered "UNDER ONE SKY" since it has "Nasca Lines." I figured all the music would be as good, but I was so disappointed. It was very jazzy, which I hate. I'm going back to the Putamayo CDs.
Metheny fans might check this one out........1999-08-06
This album is a solid effort from Brian Hughes. It has some wonderful performances on it, but I think that Brian was still trying to find himself at this point. The similarity to Pat Metheny is too close. I must say that I haven't heard anyone come that close to Metheny, but he's not Metheny. I think that he learned this later. The similarity to Metheny goes beyond Hughes' playing. The arrangements are also similar (no mean feat for those who know Metheny's work) and even the instrumentation is about the same, right down to the cymbal sound. As far as the "rap" song goes; I had the CD on one day while my neice was over (her being a teen rap-a-holic) and that tune came on and she just started laughing. It could never be considered rap. All the same I do think that the CD is worth checking out.
You have to hear this one!.......1999-04-15
Brian Hughes is, in my opinion, one of the most gifted musicians on the planet today. The similarity in style to Pat Metheny is uncanny. From the first tune, 'Under One Sky' (title track), that similarity is unmistakable. Yet, Brian Hughes' music is different and the album offers a pleasant variety. A sprinkle of Jesse Cook and you have 'Nasca Lines' (track #2), with an unmistakable Iberian flavour. If you've never been a big fan of rap, 'Here Comes Trouble' (track #5) will grab you and pound it into you with such driving guitar that you'll be left with hair standing on end, salivating and asking for more. This is rap like you've never heard it before. Wow! Or try 'Thin Blue Line' (track #9) for us daydreamer types.
The music is evocative and beautiful. The musicianship is second to none. A must have for anyone who appreciates good music.

Music for kids and kids at heart.......2006-06-13
Having seen Ruth Pelham and her Music Mobile when I was a little girl, I stumbled across this CD about 20 years later just recently. I listened to music clips and her music instantly brought back memories and tears to my eyes. Ruth's music is simply heartwarming, loving, and sincere, and pays particular attention to situations that children go through while growing up, like being shy, being sad, and going through a divorce. She also sings about important topics like racial tolerance, family roots, and protecting the environment, but in a way children will understand. I kind of think of her as the female version of Pete Seeger with her folksy voice, catchy tunes, and guitar strumming. She also has young children accompany her while singing on many of the songs. Highly recommended to anyone, although the CD case says for ages 4 to adult.
Ruth Pelham -- the kids will love her and so will you.......2001-12-31
Many years ago we had a tape of Ruth Pelham and her wonderful songs and we played it in our car as we took trips with the kids. Now, our oldest, 25, still sings these tunes, and so do his three younger sisters. Ruth Pelham has a special rapport with children and she spins a folk genre with her guitar that speaks to the private world of kids and their emotions. These simple tunes about love, friendship, optimism, and human relationships are pure medicine for children -- and I think they help adults understand the feelings of children who can be bewildered by a rather austere adult world. And some of the tunes derive from a deep and abiding faith in the power of people. The song "Look to the People" for instance is especially moving in light of the terrorism that struck this country on Sept. 11, 2001. I would say that Pelham is in the tradition of great folk artists like Woody Guthrie, deriving her special relationship with the listener from a deep belief in the resilience of the human heart and the innocence of the imagination of children. Our family treasures Ruth Pelham's music, and I think, if you have kids, they will be getting a gift of music that they will remember for a long time.

Customer Reviews:
Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09
This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.
Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28
I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.
