Blue's Big Musical Movie (2000 Film) [Soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews

Despite its abundance of decidedly unsophisticated ditties by Blue's bug-eyed and batty but well-intentioned owner, Steve, Blue's Big Musical Movie delights the youngsters and soothes beleaguered grown-up ears with a handful of selections by the inimitable Ray Charles, who also guest stars in the movie. With backup from the Persuasions, Charles spins even nonsensical stuff into songs worth a listen: "Hey, hey / Shooba-dee-day / Beep, bop, bay" are lines from "There It Is," a Charles-Steve duet that simmers, subtly, with soul. "Tempo" has Charles deftly speeding things up and slowing them down without making the song seem choppy or overly didactic--a minor, itty-bitty testament to his legend. Blue's Clues' countless fans who are younger than 6 won't feel gypped by this CD, either. All the familiar favorites--Side Table, Mailbox, and even upstart Magenta--chime in with values-laden tunes about the individual obstacles that dogged them in the movie (which centers around the staging of a backyard "big show"). "I Can Be Anything That I Want to Be" salutes Side Table, who overcomes shyness and summons the nerve to sing in the Show. And its refrain, "Don't give up, just go on," sends a message to several cast members--and, with luck, listeners--about shrugging off goofs and setbacks in the name of going for it, whatever the goal. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars It's got a great beat, and it's easy to drive to!.......2001-09-29

I agree with most of the other reviewers: this is the best music for the car! It's jazzy/bluesy/big band, and it's music my husband and I are always tapping along to (and we're both musicians). We, too noticed the "Girl from Ipanema" sound to Steve's solo! A caveat: this is NOT a Blues Clues episode--it's a soundtrack, so don't expect dialog and a game of Blues Clues. I know purple dinosaur and other shows teach lots of great lessons, but Blues Clues has always had them beat when it comes to quality music. The only other kids music I enjoy this much is Veggie Tales! (check out Veggie Tunes!)Both Blues Clues and Veggie tapes(or CDs) are great "tantrum-squelcher" items, too. In case my daughter (a terrific two) is less-than-thrilled with being in her carseat, or whatever else is bothering her, within a second of this tape starting, she's got a smile on her face, and gets very excited.

If you buy this knowing it's not an episode, you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars the very best car music.......2001-08-29

We have 2 kids - 6 and 2 - and this tape is a Godsend. Finally people are realizing kids can enjoy music that has a great beat, is intelligently written and is several large steps above the large purple dinosaur (sorry Barney; kids love you, but you make us parents grit our teeth.) This has truly catchy tunes with excellent bass rhythms and witty lyrics. If you want that long car trip to pass more quickly, play this and groove to Ray Charles and the Temptations. When it comes to picking road tunes, I never thought I'd find myself debating between The Beatles, Don Henley and Steve, but life is funny that way...

5 out of 5 stars Even My Husband will listen to this in the car............2000-12-30

And that, my friends, says a lot! Our 2 and a half year old has been bitten by the Blue Bug HARD. Bought as a last minute Christmas Gift, we have been listening to this non stop for 2 weeks now and still we are not annoyed. The music is peppy and lyrics are reasonably interesting. Steve's big solo "Smart like you" even has a strange "Girl form Ipanema" quality that my husband noticed immediately. The music styles are varied and well arranged.

I knew that this was a nice CD, when my husband picked it up to take it in the car with him 2 nights ago. He never volunteers to take any children's music with him!

5 out of 5 stars If you get the movie, Get this too!.......2000-10-02

As you notice, the music on "Blue's Clues" has a cooler sound than some other little kids shows. If you get the movie, Don't jump to conclusions about "You have the songs on the movie" because the Cd even includes stuff that wasn't heard in the movie. The first track "Today's the Big Day" the song Tickety sings was left out of the movie. Mr. Salt's opening on "Breakfast Song" isn't heard in the film, either, but part of the song is. On the cd "Silly Hat" Steve sings with Mr. Salt and Mailbox, not Slippery. "The Clipboard Shuffle" is different on the CD as well. "Dynamics" is also a leave-out and so is "As Smart as You", as for this song, I think it was left out, Because they thought it would bore the little ones. Another Leave-out "The Magic of Theater" was probably introduced to people who went to "Blue's Clues Live!". You'll notice on "There it is", that you won't hear Blue or the kids on this track, Oh the parents will be Pleased(Ray Charles is on the CD, too). Steve and his friends(except Periwinkle, you'll hear him talking on Track 2 "At the Show")sing even better than before. Sidetable sings to us about why she's too shy to sing onstage or wanting to sing in the show in her Lament and in another song she sings "I Wanna Sing...". Give the CD a chance and you will believe me later.
