Ella Jenkins & A Union of Friends Pulling Together

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
As the title indicates, this 27 song collection finds Ella Jenkins and a Union of Friends Pulling Together to have fun, pick and sing, and educate young children on the concept of unions. Broadly defined by Jenkins in the handsome liner booklet, the union is everything from a marriage to a group of like-minded friends to a pack of teamsters or a nation of states. Unity and cooperation, at the heart of all that is unionized, forms the core of this get-together of Jenkins, musician Bucky Halker, and a gathering of adult and child members of her Chicago-based church family. Many numbers come from America's vast folk catalog, such as Pete Seeger's single contribution, "If I Had a Hammer." Likewise, several songs are common children's songs, such as "One Meat Ball" and "Skip to My Lou." Accompanied by simple acoustic guitar and harmonica, the whole gang holds forth with song, story, and rhyming games, the latter for which Jenkins is particularly known. Excellent class source material, A Union of Friends is joyful, spontaneous, and encourages singing and playing right along. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Sing alongs that engage primary age children.......2007-07-05

I used this classic cd in a class with six and seven year olds and there was 100% engagement.

3 out of 5 stars We weren't thrilled.......2005-09-30

There wasn't enough music on this CD. We wanted more songs to sing along with and less repeat songs and blank space for us to sing our parts.....

4 out of 5 stars sentimental favorite.......2005-03-09

I was so excited when I found this cd on amazon today. I had been looking for it for years. I didn't know the artist, but I did remember it was a red cd with a song that went "You sing a song and I'll sing a song in warm or wintry weather." My brother and I heard this cd in preschool over and over again and loved it. It is cherry and simple- not a ton of instruments (mainly a guitar) and not tons of kids screaching at the top of their lungs. I can't see this cd driving any parent crazy. I also fondly remember the song "Miss Mary Mac". Parents, get this for your preschoolers. They will love it.

5 out of 5 stars You Sing a Song.......2005-01-28

My "kids" are in their 30's and having children of their own and I want to pass on songs from their childhood to the grandchildren. Our original copy of Ella in on an LP, what is that you say.......a record and it is worn out. I am ordering a CD, which will hopefully be around for a while! K:)

5 out of 5 stars Sounds new again.......2004-01-15

After working with Ella Jenkins music for many years, (still using the original vinyl records) I moved to a new school with absolutely no resources. After spending days looking around I decided to buy an assortment of Ella's CD's, we have just had the most marvelous year, her music today is as fresh now as when first recorded, everyone at my new school was astounded with how much fun and success we had, my five year olds put on the most amazing music concert, with one conducting and the others divided into groups, playing numerous instruments and singing in rounds. Ella thanks for helping me give these children such a fun and sound foundation in music. Susan Fell, Melbourne Australia

Long before Raffi ever picked up a guitar, Ella Jenkins was pioneering the field of children's music. Her example of short, well-played folk songs that neither talked over kids' heads nor condescended to them remains the model for children's-music performers everywhere. Long before "multicultural" became a buzzword in educational and arts circles, Jenkins was drawing her material from Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and her own African American neighborhood in South Chicago. She celebrates her 40th anniversary as a professional entertainer with the anthology, Multicultural Children's Songs, which collects 23 songs from a dozen different Folkways albums onto a single CD. She is the Pete Seeger of children's music, and this is a good introduction to her work. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars My kids love this!.......2004-02-26

My mother played this album for my kids (ages 5 & 2) in the car during our recent week-long visit. They loved it! We listened to it all week long! Ms. Jenkins introduces many of the songs, and there are children singing along with her on many of the tracks. It is as if you are listening in on a music workshop she is conducting for children. I couldn't believe how quickly my kids began to sing along, especially since many of the songs are not in English. My kids often prefer music with which they are already familiar, especially when away from home, but they took to this recording immediately. This is certainly an album we will want in our collection!

1 out of 5 stars I was dissapointed.......2004-02-06

After reading the glowing reviews of this CD I had high expectations. I had to come back here to say that this is one of the worst internet purchases I have ever made. The songs were slow & overly simplistic, as well as dated. I listened to this with my husband and our 5 year old daughter. There was one song on here that our daughter liked, the rest about bored us all to tears. It was a test just for us to endure to listen to them all. I don't understand the fondness some have for this CD, so buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars 555 stars!.......2002-01-29

I love Ella Jenkins, and I love this compilation. The way she has of bringing music to so many children makes me respect her so much. I use this CD and its music in my music classes and the students meet it with incredible enthusiasm. My own children ask for this when we travel in the car. Buy this CD. You won't be sorry!

WONDERFUL FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES

5 out of 5 stars wonderful fun.......2000-05-22

My 5 year old daughter LOVES this music. Ella Jenkins gives brief introductions to songs so you get a sense of place and culture even before the beat begins. The songs are made for singing along, you can't help but clap and tap. this tape is superb.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly a feel-good, fun-for the-whole-family music album.......2005-04-08

Over the past six years, I have spent hundreds, maybe thousands, of hours listening to children's music. I've diligently traveled to the local library and checked out music CDs each month to foster my children's appreciation of diverse musical genres, to boost their musical intelligence, and to provide an ever changing variety of background music for playtime. I am on a never-ending quest to find great albums that feature a rare combination of musical talent with enjoyable music. So many albums these days drive adults crazy with mindless lackluster rhymes and the majority of them are just "ordinary" albums you can live without. Occasionally however, we discover some real musical gems like Cellabration. This album is truly a feel-good, fun-for the-whole-family music album. You cannot go wrong with this uplifting music.

Nominated for a Grammy award for best Musical Album for Children, Cellabration features a "who's who" line-up of the best children's recording artists of our time plus some favorites from the past. The variety of artists is complimented by the variety of musical styles. The quirky "Let's All Sing a Yodeling Song" by Riders in the Sky is by far the favorite of my two girls. We've had a number of yodeling contests in the car after listening to this song. There are some unusual spoken word tracks like the "World of Whickum-Whackum" by Bill Harley and the playful "I Know a Tom" by Tom Paxton. I'm amazed that Sara, my four-year-old, can recite these silly tongue-twisters from memory.

There are many multicultural songs including the "Hukilau Song" by Marcy Marxer, "Dulee, Dulee" by Michele Valeri and "Jambo" by Red Grammer, the "Raspa/Fiesta de Niños Medley" mixed in with the spoken word "Rushing Around Russia" by Mike Stein and the classic American tune "Turkey in the Straw" by Cathy Fink. There are some really catchy tunes on this album that you may have trouble getting out of your head. The "Go Miss Mary Mack Medley" by Sweet Honey in the Rock is one of those songs that is permanently etched in my mind in a pleasant way.

The next time your family is going on a roadtrip or if you just need a break from "ordinary" children's music, pop Cellabration in your CD or MP3 player for hours of great musical entertainment for the entire family.--Dr. Lara Ashmore

5 out of 5 stars Our current favorite album.......2005-03-15

We recently received this CD as a gift and it has quickly become our favorite CD. My 4 yo son LOVES singing along to it, and the songs are simple (yet wonderful) enough for him to pick up, although he thinks "Dulce Dulce" is "goose egg, goose egg."

    4 out of 5 stars Fun-Happy Music! Cellabration.......2005-03-07

This CD is very happy. After listening I could not stop smiling.
The tunes are singable. The musicianship on the dixieland tracks as well as the others is excellent! This CD allows the young listener to hear real musical instruments and different musical styles, and might provide inspiration for them later to participate in music (school or at home).
I am very glad I ordered it for myself and as gifts for nieces and nephews.
I shared the Amazon link with my school teacher friends in several states. Thanks for providing the listening excerpts link!

    4 out of 5 stars popular sing-alons.......2003-04-09

This CD is popular with my 1-year-old, and I enjoy it, as well. My daughter seems to especially enjoy the songs which feature children singing with Ella, of which there are several. I enjoy the folk-songy sound of the songs. I especially like "Out of the Wilderness," though my daughter prefers some of the other songs. It was a good choice for us.

Originally released by renowned Folkways recording artist Ella Jenkins in 1965, Jenkins appears on Counting Games and Rhythms for the Little Ones with children from Lake Meadows Nursery School. Most appropriate for preschoolers and elementary-school children, this short collection of tunes neither panders to nor reaches frustratingly beyond the abilities of its intended audience. Jenkins comes across as a warm and respectful leader gently guiding her small charges through a set of verbal tumbling while reinforcing the importance of order and of both individual and group dynamics. There are a number of old favorites here, including "Two Little Black Birds" and "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," which makes the collection as enjoyable for parents as it is for kids. --Paige La Grone

        Album Description

Twenty-two all-time favorite nursery rhymes with Ella encouraging group participation by cuing lyrics and activities while she sings. Titles include The Muffin Man, Hey Diddle Diddle, and Sing a Song of Sixpence. "[A] good variety of rhymes. Ms. Jenkins has a marvelous speaking voice; when reading rhymes or giving directions, she speaks to the children, not down to them" - Nancy Cooper, Music Educator

Unless a seconds-long slice of piano boogie-woogie counts, there is nothing remotely cool or hip about Sharing Cultures with Ella Jenkins. But while your kids are little -- 3 to 8 if you go by the label's recommendation -- you'll never want to remove it from your CD changer anyway. The first lady of children's music earns her reputation here, waving her magic wand over near and distant lands and turning what she discovers into 28 neatly bundled bits of sound. Cultures is not all about music; it plays more like a night by the campfire, with songs and poems erupting from a story whose narrative dips and swerves, rudderless, to the corners of the earth but manages to keep its grip on its listeners anyway. The cultural odyssey (Mexico, Ireland, Turkey, and Russia are among the countries visited) benefits sharply from Jenkins' slow, soothing cadence, but credit is also rightly extended to the children of the LaSalle Language Academy of Chicago, who sing sweetly but mightily on a number of tracks. A 30-page booklet in this 31st Jenkins release clinches its staying power: Song notes and drawings are steeped in whimsy, but a pig Latin lesson pulls kids in closest, acting as a sweet, subtle confirmation that it's speaking their language. --Tammy La Gorce
