4 out of 5 stars One Deep Album.......2006-11-03

Ocean Beach took me a number of play throughs to catch on to it. But now that I have gone rounds with this album I have realized that it has been quite a long time since I have taken it out of my car collection.

5 out of 5 stars I used to work with Mark at a San Francisco Hotel.......2005-12-03

I was with Mark when he played for 4AD at a club in San Francisco, CA. We worked a hotel job together to make ends meet. He's a wonderful guy who I've lost track of over the past 12 or so years. But, the first album is really magic and it comes from his heart. Mark is a real talent, as was his band.

3 out of 5 stars patience needed.......2004-10-04

I was really looking forward to listening this record. I'd never had anything from RHP before and I looking at the reviews I thought I found a new favorite. Well, actually it turned out a bit too arty for my taste. There are songs that are way too long on this album, they sometimes become a bit too repetitious. The voice of Kozelek is fine, though. Sounds like Duncan Sheik a bit - some of the songs even resemble Sheik's "ballads" musically. But, on the whole, if you consider that "Ocean Beach" consists only of slow songs (that must be a trademark of the band), they're simply not that heavenly breathtaking. Experimental, creative music, but I think one that's hard to really adore.

5 out of 5 stars The quintessential RHP album.......2003-06-21

Sometimes you wonder just how on earth Mark Kozelek can continue to come out with songs of such raw emotional intensity. No other songwriter is able to detail pain and loss in the way Kozelek does. This was evdient even on the band's debut lp Down Colourful Hill - songs like "Medicine Bottle" and "Michael".

Perhaps what is most interesting about Ocean Beach is that it is almost entirely a Kozelek project. Granted a few of the songs employ a full band - but mostly its sparse, lonely acoustic guitar and piano. Yet this is what makes Ocean Beach so stunning - its ability to draw you deep into Kozelek's world. "Summer dress" and "Shadows" are probably the highlights, both are just Kozelek on vocals with accompanying guitar and piano. As one would expect, most songs pack a punch with its honesty and beauty. Try listening to "drop" without feeling something tingling up your spine.

I could say a lot of things, but tt the end of the day, Ocean Beach is a great album. Its music at its most intense and emotional, yet still remaining simple and unoffensive in its delivery. A classic.

4 out of 5 stars The last 4AD album shows evolution and confidence.......2003-02-26

Red House Painters released their fourth album OCEAN BEACH in 1995. Their last for the influential British record label 4AD, the album displays a bit of creative evolution while retaining and in fact epitomising everything that there is to like about Red House Painters' work.

Frontman Mark Kozelek was previously nervous about vocals; the singing on earlier RHP records is characterised by shyness and heavy use of reverb. This is still true on "Brockwell Park" and "Moments", but by the time OCEAN BEACH was recorded, Kozelek was feeling more confident and some tracks here feature vocals that are suprisingly up front. Kozelek was also moving towards a more electric sound, a change which ultimately led to the band's dismissal from 4AD and subsequent loss of members, and "San Geronimo" features suprising aggression while remaining recognisable as RHP. "Summer Dress", arguably the most moving song of OCEAN BEACH, features string orchestration which intensifies the melancholy for which RHP's genre was given the label "sadcore."

The most underappreciated aspect of Red House Painters was Anthony Koutsos's drumming. Though he always resisted the temptation to showboat or speed things up, he provided a rhythmic base without which none of the band's magic would have been possible. The percussion on the opening instrumental "Cabezon" and the album's transcendently beautiful closing track "Drop" is excellent.

Fans of His Name is Alive may enjoy the album, as Warren Defever plays a hidden track after "Drop" just like Kozelek was a guest on HNIA's 1996 album STARS ON E.S.P.

If you've never heard the music of Red House Painters before, I'd recommend RETROSPECTIVE, which collects the best of their 4AD-era output with live rarities and demos. OCEAN BEACH may be the best next stop for people enchanted by the band.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly comforting.......2005-05-03

As a long time TOB fan I have to say I am greatly disappointed in the length...just about the time I am really digging the album it fades away, but what an album. Dave and the guys have really outdone themselves. My favorite song is 'Sunshower;' it is lyrically one of the saddest but musically most delightful songs I have dome across in years.

5 out of 5 stars They are still BIG!!!.......2005-03-25

I have been an Ocean Blue fan since their first album "The Ocean Blue" and I was more than happy to find out that they had a new cd,the "Waterworks" EP.What can I say about it? After a first listen, a feeling of "walking on air" was all over me, which means their music lifted me up.That is how I feel when I listen to "Waterworks".Thank you OCEAN BLUE, you are at your BEST!!!

4 out of 5 stars Ocean Blue is back in form.......2005-03-15

After not being too impressed with their first indie album, "DJL"...I was happy to hear that The Ocean Blue is back into good form using all the cool and dreamy guitar effects that we are used to hearing from their albums like Cerulean and Beneath the Rhythm and Sound.

Not a lot of people seem to like the instrumental, but I am pretty keen to it. I tend to like those short and ambient album intros that many artist insert into their albums. I heard in an interview that Dave learned how to use a recording program called, "Reason" and that track was basically him playing around and learning how to use it. He also claimed that he hadn't done much with synthesizers...although it does seem that he uses them on quite a few of his songs.

Pedestrian: My second favorite track after "Ticket to Wyoming" This song is pretty cool. I like the way the song outros rather than the beginning. I wish the entire song could have been as cool as the end of the song.

Golden Gate: This song is the only reason I didn't give this album 5 stars. I wasn't totally impressed with it...it does remind you the so-cal sound, but it is rather boring. I have seen them support this album a couple times and they are yet to play this track.

Ticket to Wyoming: ONe of the catchiest choruses ever on an Ocean Blue album. One good indicator of this song is that my wife likes it and she is not a fan of all the Ocean Blue's music. I like the use of the sweeping strings during the chorus. Oed Ronne's voice is obviously underused on the albums. He has an awesome voice! I like the line at the end of the song about "Wedding gown"...Ronne hits a good note with singing those words, bravo!

Sunshower: One of the surprises on this album. Another gem on this album that fits in perfectly with Ocean Blue's sound. My only criticism is that Oed Ronne sings this very much like Dave, so I wonder why he has to sing it at all? You might as well try to differ the sound a little bit. The organ pounding during the bridge of the song was great.

Northern Jetstream: Wow, what a cool song. Yes, it does seem that they are experimenting with some cool sampling equipment, but that is what makes new albums cool. Bands seem to be at their best when they throw new toys into the mix and they definitely did a good job with the new equipment. This is one of the rare Ocean Blue songs that you could blast in your car and just let it take you over. The whistles and bleeps of this song are very cool...it is a different type of sound than you are used to with Ocean Blue, but it also doesn't stray from what they are good at. I enjoy this song immensely!

If you are into down-tempo coolness and the So-Cal factor, this is the album for you! I love this band and I am eagerly awaiting their next album! Rock on!

5 out of 5 stars Superb retro-modern pop.......2005-02-13

This EP is simply fantastic and has me eager for their full release (sometime 2005). As a long time fan of TOB, I've enjoyed their distinct hallmark for well-crafted melodies. The harmonies and melodies are reminscent of 1960's "California" pop tunes. The guitar playing and music composition is the best that I've heard on any TOB album. It appears that Oed Ronne has really stepped up as a significant vocal talent for the group and takes the lead on two tunes, including Ticket to Wyoming. Ticket to Wyoming is a great song about getting away and starting over. The 60's retro pop sound/atmosphere (but still modern) coupled w/ Ronne's fabulous vocals makes me wonder why this song doesn't get any radio play. I highly recommend this EP to all TOB fans and those interested in becoming one. Listen to the music samples and I guarantee you'll be hooked.

3 out of 5 stars A new depth for the Ocean Blue.......2005-01-28

I have been a big TOB fan since their Sublime hit in the early 90's. This latest release shows the band moving into a more late 60's paisley pop sound.

1. Fast Forward Reverse - A unnecessary 1:36 sec instrumental intro. Lush with strings, this sounds like a movie filler music. Why was this added to an EP ? Pleasant sounding enough tho.

2. Pedestrian - My favorite song off this cd. A mid-tempo dance track (think New Order, Electronic) with jaggly guitars and a nice rhythmn arrangement. Lead Vocalist David Schelzel is in fine vocal form here. I think he is got one of the best voices in alternative pop. Add to this a sunny California 60's power pop chorus , you end up with a commercially viable single release from this band.
I love this song, worth purchasing the cd for.

3. Golden Gate - The cd takes an unexpected turn in sound with this 60's retro number reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel/Polyphonic Spree/Scott Mckenzie-Are you going to San Francisco. David Schelzel harmonizes nicely with Orange Peels frontman Allen Clapp. A psychadelic trip down a California road complete with xylophone and David's favorite words La la La La.
Probably would be a good song to listen to if I was high.

THAT'S THE END OF THE DAVID SCHELZEL SONGS. OH NO !
Next up TOB sometimes lead vocalist Oed Ronne

4. Ticket to Wyoming - Plesant guitar pop but nothing outstanding vocally. I buy cd's for a particular vocalist...I really didnt want to hear Oed Ronne too. More Schelzel please. But this is one Oed's best TOB efforts since he joined the band in the late 90's.

5. Sunshower - Uptempo and fast jaggly pop reminiscent of the UK's Housemartins. I am liking this more with each listen.

6. The Northern Jetstream - An ambitious midtempo 7 minute plus folk/dance instrumental. Some doo doos thrown in. Someone just got a new synthesizer for Christmas. This is filler music.

TOB is releasing a new full length cd in 2005. With David hanging out in Minneapolis with alot of power pop bands, this Hershey , PA band's next release should be intresting to hear.

Pick up this cd for Pedestrian. Probably for true TOB fans. Check out their last full cd Davey Jone's Locker as well - a guitar pop gem.

4 out of 5 stars Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31

Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.

This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.

Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Sophisticated hard rock from 1972 and a proggier sounding 1976 remix........2006-02-13

Nektar was comprised of English musicians that took up residence in Germany before moving to New Jersey, United States in 1975 where they worked with electronic composer Larry Fast. This 2004 remastered edition by Eclectic Discs is good and features informative liner notes along with photos of the band (mostly publicity shots). The disc also features the original mix of the album along with a significantly different remix from 1976.

      ORIGINAL ALBUM ***

The original album A Tab in the Ocean was released in 1972 and was engineered by Dieter Deirks at Deirks studio in Stommeln, W. Germany. The four tracks on the album range in length from the 4'22 heavy rocker King of Twilight to the nearly 17 minute epic prog hard rock title track. Apparently, the guys were excited by the developments in the English progressive rock scene at the time and A Tab in the Ocean represents their interpretation of progressive rock (with a hard rock twist). The music on the album is generally heavy (loud) although there are some spacey sections, with good Hammond organ work by Allan Freeman, along with decent playing by energetic bassist Derek Moore, guitarist Roye Albrighton (he used both clean and heavily distorted tones - sometimes at crushing volumes), and solid drummer Ron Howden. The lead vocal by Albrighton is quite good, and in combination with the other musicians, provides excellent three-part vocal harmonies. The group ensemble work is also pretty good, the best examples of which are provided on the epic A Tab in the Ocean and Desolation Valley/Waves.

The original album should appeal to fans of Wallenstein (the Blitzkreig album), early Deep Purple (1970-1971), Hawkwind, and Eloy (1973-1974).

      1976 REMIXED ALBUM *****

The added bonus on the CD includes a remix of the entire 1972 album (by Larry Fast) that was issued in the United States in 1976. I have to admit that I like the 1976 remix somewhat better than the original mix because the hard rock aspect has been markedly reduced and the album is a bit proggier and much softer - the sound is more in keeping with the Nektar sound around 1975. Furthermore, the sound of the recording is not as harsh and bright, with more bottom end and greater separation of individual instruments. Larry Fast did add overdubs of acoustic guitar, new electric guitar and trebly Rickenbacker bass parts, along with altered vocal parts and tiny bits of synths and mellotron. In summation, the remixed album is completely different and fans of the harder-edged original album may not like the new remix at all.

The remix should appeal to fans of 1973-1975 Nektar and Eloy from 1975-1977.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing as can be!.......2005-04-10

The reson I searched out this album was to hear the original songs that Iron Maiden covered (Crying in the Dark/King of Twilight). Let me tell ya, Tab in the Ocean (main track) has me hooked! Being a fan of some prog rock, this caught my attention instantly. An awesome disc!

4 out of 5 stars Finally a superb CD edition of Nektar.......2004-09-26

      (4.5 stars)
Please read reviews on the earlier versions of Tab.
Now that Dream Nebula has reissued the Nektar classic albums, everyone can hear them as they were originally intended--and, it turns out, as mixed for the US release several years later.
Previous editions of Nektar CDs have suffered from poor mastering. This edition, produced by Mark Powell and remastered by Paschal Byrne, who must be a genius, is phenomenally clear and clean. The vocals stand out, the bass and percussion is no longer muddy, and the keyboards soar as they should.
This edition contains the original German mix, as originally released on vinyl, and the US mix by Larry Fast and Mo Moore (1976). There are good things to say about both versions, and a few drawbacks. However, considering how incredibly well this CD is engineered with both versions available to compare, there is no downside.
Definitely 5 stars on the technical side.

2 CD for only 6$ plus shipping and handling is a good price. The quality and the choices of tunes are good and the quality of recording is good too. The orchestras, the singers and the choirs are good too. So, if the titles of tunes please you, it is a good 2-CD boxset to buy. If you are an American, I am sure that you know all these tunes. If you are not an American, you will say to yourself : "I think that I have heard this song somewhere."

San Francisco is a creative crossroads for everything from hardcore punk to acid jazz, but perhaps no music so deftly charts the Northern California coastal landscape as the expressionistic folk made by songwriter Mark Kozelek and his Bay-area band, Red House Painters. While consistently slow and acoustic-based, the music squeezes an entire spectrum of colors out of its micro-style. On the instrumental opener "Cabezon," the hue is blissfully sunny and swaying to the shuffle of brushes and picked nylon-strings. On "Red Carpet," the addition of bottom-heavy bass and a guitar noise backdrop casts an ominous pall over the same basic formula. Meanwhile, the more upbeat and hook-driven shade of "San Geromino" makes for thoroughly majestic rock. Sometimes melancholic, sometimes dramatic, Ocean Beach sounds musically united. If for no other reason, though, Red House Painters is worth celebrating because its roots lie in the much-appreciated but rarely drawn-upon beauty of Simon and Garfunkel. Hearing the bouncing bass-lines, plucked guitar intervals, and peaking harmonies of "Over My Head," you just can't help feelin' groovy, and with the unrelenting stillness of "Summer Dress" and "Drop," we bask in the sounds of silence. --Roni Sarig
