Richard and Brad continue to produce many more audio and video programs featuring "cool music that teaches" covering math, phonics, early learning, languages, science, social studies, and more.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Sibelius from GSO/Jarvi.......2006-06-02

I recently purchased this 3-disc set new for about 18 bucks, including shipping and handling. Each disc has over 70 mins of music. More importantly, the performances are evocative and highly emotional. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (of Sweden, for those of you who might not know this) and Neeme Jarvi did a terrific job on the Sibelius Symphonies for the BIS label in the 80s. I have 'em all, and they are my favorite cycle.

These are more recent recordings done by Deutche Grammaphon, with somewhat different engineering, but equally satisfying sound (to me, at least). Purchasing this "Trio" was almost a no-brainer, given the price. Now that I have the set in hand (and in CD-player), I know that it was a good decision.

Whether you know nothing about Sibelius but want to hear terrific classical music-making, or you have some Sibelius and would like to hear some arguably definitive performance of the tone poems, this set is for you.

    Enjoy, Adam.

5 out of 5 stars Tons of Great Sibelius, All Very Well Done.......2006-05-23

I may be in a minority, but I think Sibelius is a far more successful composer of program music than of so-called absolute music. In fact, his most successful symphony, No. 2, has a definite program, and his most successful symphonic movement, the marvelous finale of Symphony No. 5, is also pictorial, supposedly inspired by a flight of geese and the bell-like music that their calls made as they passed overhead. So I believe these generously filled discs in the Trio Series present some of the best of orchestral Sibelius, including "Pohjola's Daughter," "En Saga," "The Oceanides," and "Tapiola." There are other favorites as well, of course, including "Finlandia," "Valse Triste," and "The Swan of Tuonela" (part of the spacious "Four Legends"), as well as some lesser-known (to non-Sibelians, anyway) masterworks such as "Luonnotar" and "Night Ride and Sunrise," a quirky, more interesting incarnation of the binary form that Sibelius tried out in the finale of his Third Symphony.

There's still more and more, including some music (such as "King Christian" and "The Bard") that is rarely heard but well worth hearing. In fact, if there are any clunkers here, I don't know of them. Sibelius emerges as a composer who rarely failed when inspired by literature, especially his beloved Kalevala, or the purely pictorial. Neemi Jarvi, whose baton is sometimes too fleet and whose interpretations sometimes skate along the surface of the music, is here inspired to give some of his finest interpretations (and there are many, many on CD). The Goteborg Orchestra has this music in its blood and proves the perfect medium for the dark vision of "The Four Legends," for the shimmer and sheen of "The Oceanides," or for the easy folksiness of "Karelia" and "King Christian." Fine, wide-ranging sound from DG as well. It's up-front but not oppressive, allowing woodwind and percussion detail to emerge with real clarity. Try "Night Ride and Sunrise" as an example; it's rarely sounded this alive in recording.

5 out of 5 stars a perfect introduction to sibelius.......2006-02-18

this is a great set of Sibelius's work. There are some of unknown as as well known pieces. I recommend this work to introduce people to Sibelius and Sibelian's as well. neeme jarvi is a master interpreter of Sibelius work and the orchestra is brillent.

The music is upbeat and tells a story. I think the kids enjoy this and the multiplication soundtrack more than any of the educational CD's they have. I wish more learning tapes were this creative!

Great music, my daughter loves it. We play it in the car all the time. The best part is, that she is learning Math and having fun.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!.......2006-05-09

I BOUGHT THIS CD ON A WHIM. MY LITTLE NEPHEW, CHRIS, AND I LOVE TO SPEND TIME TOGETHER DOING THINGS, AND TRYING TO BE A GOOD UNCLE, I DO MY BEST TO MAKE SURE HE GETS AT LEAST A 'LITTLE' EDUCATION DURING OUR 'OUTINGS'. I HAD NO IDEA HOW GOOD THIS WOULD BE.
I HAD HEARD THAT THIS COMPANY HAD WON AN 'INDY' AWARD FOR BEST CHILDREN'S CD...SO I FIGURED IT WAS A FAIRLY GOOD GUAGE TO GO ON...

ON FIRST LISTEN, YOU ARE CAPIVATED BY THE 'CARTOON' TYPE VOICES USED IN EACH CHARACTER...CHRIS LOVED THAT IMMEDIATELY AND WANTED TO HEAR IT AGAIN AND AGAIN...IT WASN'T UNTIL I HAD HEARD IT FOR THE SECOND TIME THAT I REALIZED 'I' WAS GETTING EDUCATED TOO.

THE LAYERS OF EDUCATION WITHIN EACH SONG IS STAGGERING.
IT'S MATH, HISTORY, GRAMMER. GEOGRAPHY, SCIENCE AND LIFE ALL ROLLED INTO ONE.

LITTLE ONES WILL ENJOY IT FOR THE VOICES AND FUN SONGS (WHICH BY THE WAY, ARE QUITE GOOD...EVEN FOR MY OLD JADED EARS)...YOU WILL PROBABLY FIND YOUR CHILDREN RETURNING TO THIS 'GOOGOL' THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN AS THEY GROW UP....IT'S CHOCK FULL OF TONS OF INFORMATION....

    WELL DONE...!!!

What a fun & educational collection of songs. The music is high quaility, and very professional. The children I know who have heard the songs really enjoy them. They were singing along to song in no time. What a great way to learn math and other facts.

Celestial Memories - my go-to cd & best buddy as I know it best
I highly recommend you try one of her cd's and see what they might offer you. Better yet, attend a concert & see what most draws you so you can select your perfect cd. Best to listen to when you have a few minutes to hurry up and meditate...ha ha...don't recommend using while power walking or driving...prefer sitting in candle lit silence and being blissed by Elivia's music...like being inside a secret sacred cathedral...Namaste

5 out of 5 stars Transport Yourself to Higher Realms!.......2001-08-18

If you want to have a new experience, meditate more deeply, relax after a hard day, drift off to sleep easily or tap into a deeper sense of connection with the universe then start with this CD! If you have never heard these bowls or the joyful sound from the angelic realms--you will when Elvia and her group plays.

I first heard Elivia play solo in La Costa. Within a year she had assembled a wide variety of bowls of different tones. In the Fall of 2000 Ark Ministries for Illumination (with another local church) sponsored a healing concert with Elivia and her bowls here in the mountains. The result was amazing. In the summer of 2001 she was again sponsored so she could perform under the pines in the pristine mountain community of Big Bear. Her ensemble had grown to a larger number of bowls, other instruments and musicians. Larger crowds flocked to see her and the local television station even showed up to film her. Afterwards the concert was the buzz around town.

Elivia's concerts now take her around the Southwest every weekend with great hoards of people anticipating their arrival. I was thrilled when this CD came out since now people everywhere could have this incredible experience in their own home.

Buy this CD and find out why others are so excited about it. BUT I CAUTION YOU --make sure you don't listen to it while driving! ;-)

    4 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2001-05-04

Elivia Melodey's Celestial Memories is magically inspiring. The beautiful tones and music that come from the crystal vibrations are rich, deep and unique. It's perfect to meditate to. The CD quality is excellent.

    5 out of 5 stars Transformational harmonics.......2001-04-29

This work contains transformational harmonics that take you to many lovely places, balancing and healing your energy field. This divinely inspired music transports you to other realms of Spirit and magic.

5 out of 5 stars Communicating with your celestial soul.......2001-04-27

When I first came across the clip of this CD - I felt immendiatly transported to a previously untapped part of my inner being. I've heard before that music is the universal language. and it is so true. The tones emanating from the crystal bowls played so hauntingly by Elivia resonated deep into my soul, connecting my mind and opening my heart to all that is beautiful, available and healing to me. In addition I was overcome by a deep awareness that washed over me through this exceptionally unusual example of universal language created my Ms. Melodey. I felt enlightened and soothed to feel just how connected we are to ourselves, each other and our environment when we open our senses, inviting in the music of the crystal bowls to bathe our world weary bodies, transporting us into a magical place of universal connection and healing within and around us. This CD will lead you gently into an experience so magical you will want to share it with all who deserve the gift of an open heart that resonates with the healing power of Elivia's music.

Producer Calls on the Power of Music to Increase Math Scores

In just four years, producer David Printis has taught math, science and geography to over 35,000 children by invoking the power of music. Now, his company continues to educate with new CD's.

Fort Washington, MD - As our country rallies for higher math achievement scores by increasing teachers' pay and rewarding states for encouraging learning, one music producer has risen to the call to action by producing educational music CD's that kids, parents, and even teachers are raving about.Launched in October 2001, the series' first CD, "Multiplication Hip Hop," became an instant hit, and has since become one of the hottest selling independent music CD's on the East coast. Later titles in the series, "It's Elementary," "Science and Geography," and the newest one, "Addition and Subtraction" have met with equal success.

"Kids like the CD's," Printis remarks. "They don't even realize they're learning. They just think they're having fun listening to hip hop."

Not only has Printis won the praise of parents, teachers, and school principals, his company has received the interest of university faculties and national media such as The Washington Post and National Public Radio's "Morning Edition."

"Kids learn the alphabet by learning a song, they learn to count by putting it in a song. This is just another way of bringing it to life for kids," says Martin L. Johnson, professor of mathematics education at the University of Maryland at College Park.

Karen Kunkel, principal at Green Valley Elementary School in a suburb of Washington, D.C., uses "Multiplication Hip Hop" to teach her second graders. She has attributed the CD's with her school's significant improvement on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills, a standardized test given to students in Maryland.

"The CD's are a good influence," Printis concludes. "The rhythm keeps the kids interested…and learning."

5 out of 5 stars You Just Have To Sing Along!.......2005-08-16

I have a tendancy to get sick of Christmas music, but this is the one CD I listen to all season. I get caught singing along, I'm not very good, hence why I get caught, but I love it!

        Album Description

In October 2000, Scott McGill put together a super session with legendary bassist Michael Manring (Attention Deficit), drummer Vic Stevens (Gongzilla), and guest keyboardist Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater). Super-producer Neil Kernon oversaw the ensuing melee. The end result, 'Addition by Subtraction' is a jaw dropping display of technical virtuosity laced with hooks, melodies, and odd metered rhythms. Destined to become a classic for fans of heavy progressive rock, metal & fusion. Laser's Edge.

4 out of 5 stars All I can say is WOW.......2005-12-18

After just hearing this cd for the first time I am pleasantly surprised to find out that there are still guys out there who love jaw-dropping fusion like me. As a fusion-loving guitarist myself I was grinning from the first track. It is a little jigsaw puzzle-ish, but I find complex music like this very entertaining. Admittedly the influences are pretty obvious (Holdsworth, UK, Dream Theater, Bruford, et al), but it is done very well and has it's own uniqueness. If you like monster players playing monster fusion, I think you will like this cd.

1 out of 5 stars Good Musicians, poor music..........2003-05-23

I was expecting a lot more from this release given the line up. The musicianship is stellar but there is no soul in this music. That's the bottom line. If you're looking for an outstanding trio try Manring's efforts with "Attention Deficit," a band that features Tim Alexander (Primus) and Alex Skolnick. Also there's a band called Massacre (Bill Laswell on bass) that improvises everything they do and it just kills. Bill Frisell's Trio Live with Joey Baron and Kermit Driscoll is stunning as well, but this Addition by Subtraction album sounds like lame noodling and the bad part is one can tell that all the parts were worked out ahead of time. Sorry, but not my cup of tea. Where's the feeling???

5 out of 5 stars Fusion is alive and angry........2001-12-15

Being a long time fan of Michael Manring and fusion has led me down a dark and disturbing road.Ah, but what a beautiful distubance! Fans of such fusion acts as Return to Forever,Mahavishnu Orchestra,Vertu,Lost Tribe,Tribal Tech, and Vital TechTones will surely not be dissapointed by this offering. From the opening chords of "Zimparty", to the Spanish tinged acoustic vibe of "Euzkadi", the trio of Michael Manring (bass),Scott McGill (guitars),and Vic Stevens (drums) assualt the aural senses with technical prowes and harmonial gymnastics that will fill that fusion void for the most discerning of the 'un-purists".Jordan Rudess (keys)and Neil Kernon (loops) round out the "trio" and it is safe to say that the absence of their contributions would surely be missed (check out the Corea-esque solo on "We are not Amused"). But the real tour guides on this sonic excursion are the core members.Manring's solos are straight forward groove and grind, dipping into the occasional Jaco bag-o-tricks while McGill's own solos harken back to vintage DiMeola and Stern ,with a dash of McLaughlann.Stevens lays down the beat with an impeccable command of the meter, then trows it out and invents his own with ease and precision. The production is smooth throughout and the overall mix lends itself well to a nice set of earphones.A bit of noodling here and there may tempt you to skip to the next tune but don't cheat yourself. There are surprises around every turn and you may miss one hell of a ride. All in all
"+/- Addition by Subtraction" is an effort worthy of a lofty possition along side RTF's Romantic Warrior and any Mahavishnu set worth owning.McGill,Manring, and,Stevens
(along with Rudess and Kernon) may very well be the next real fusion bad boys allowing the beast to scream and howl like no other. Grab your Medeski,Martin, and Wood hippie friends, tie them up, slap a pair of headphones on thier greasy heads, crank up the decibals and do them a favor.Fusion is indeed alive, and very, very angry......

4 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air.......2001-07-29

        The American Heritage Dictionary:

fu·sion (fyu-zhen) n. Music that blends jazz elements and the heavy repetitive rhythms of rock. Also called jazz-fusion, jazz-rock.

Mcgill, Manring, Stevens come together on this truly unique album to make a real impact on this esoteric genre, fusion. Addition by Subtraction is an impressive and refreshing CD because the instrumentation is unlike anything I've ever heard. Scott McGill leads most of the album and a couple of tracks, in fact, are solo. As I've said, the music is truly orgininal and I find myself listenning to it just as I would read a new interesting book, wanting to find out what comes next. Michael Manring does alot more with bass than just bounce around backing up the guitarist and McGill shows off his inhuman picking speed more than once. Vic Stevens also has his own unique take on drums as he backs them up while at the same time doing his own thing. The only reason this CD doesnt deserve a 5 star rating is because it can be a little repetetive. I think this CD could have been condensed if some of the tracks were blended together since they often sound similar anyway. But in conclusion, Addition by Subtraction is a great CD for anyone who is open to new and unusual music and willing to take a chance. This could turn out to be that amazing CD that you try to get all your skeptical friends to buy also.

3 out of 5 stars best fusion album ive heard.......2001-06-27

This is the best jazz-rock album ive ever listened to. The reason for there being only 3 stars given, is that fusion is not my cup of tea. If fusion is your thing, then this would easily get 5 stars. 3 of the best fusion players are united to make some insanely complex, yet spontaneous and improvisational music. If you enjoyed these musicians on other projects, especially McGill's Hand Farm, you will not be disappointed.

Cobalt Minor's third release "More Left Frontal Cortex" definetly allows the phrase "third times the charm" to ring true. Absolutely infectious grooves on this rock and roll record. Yes, rock and roll. Audely Freed (Black Crowes) lends his deliciously greasy chops to this record. This is a must own. You'll find yourself playing this one over and over on your iPod.
