Editorial Reviews
From Parents' Choice®
David and Jenny Heitler-Klevans and kids perform more appealing educational and inpirational songs, some book-based, about protecting nature and the environment ("Who Decides?," "Blue Crab Blues"), about emotions and communication ("Talk It Out"), and about the joys of reading ("Hanging Out With Heroes at the Library"). A 1999 Parents' Choice® Silver Honor Winner. (Lynne Heffley, Parents' Choice®)

Experimental Vangelis!!!.......2007-01-19
Like his 1978 album "Beaubourg", Vangelis's 1985 release "Invisible Connections" has had a divided opinion amongst those who have followed his music closely over the years. Like another reviewer has stated, 'either you get it or you don't'.
While "Beaubourg" consisted of music that was more in the style of Morton SUbotnick or Karlheinz Stockhausen, "Invisible Connections" finds Vangelis adopting a style that's closer to Brian Eno only in a more subdued abstract fashion. The 18-minute title track is divided into to two distinct sections. The opening half consists of random treated percussion sounds (mainly cymbals and woodblocks) as well as what sounds like a prepared piano. At around the nine minute mark, the piece shifts into a dark ambient soundscape consisting of a low rumble, random keyboard notes and drones and Subotnick-like sequences hovering in the background. Altogether it is quite extraordinary if listened to with the proper set of ears.
The two pieces that make up the second half of the album are similar to each other. "Atom Blaster" is similar to the "Beaubourg" album but the emphasis is on the spaces between the random notes and is more abstract. "Thermo Vision" takes "Atom Blaster's" ideas and takes them to the extreme. Granted, there is nothing melodic about these two pieces, just random notes enchanced by reverb and the occasional gong sound - Quite different from the trademark Vangelis style.
While the album has its share of naysayers, "Invisible Connections" is a satisfying piece of work. It's more of an avant-garde classical album than it is an album of commercial music. It's definitely worth a listen especially if you enjoy experimental music.
Not Vangelis's best work, obviously but still a challenging album overall.
You either get it or you don't........2006-08-03
I bought this album when it first came out in 1985, unsure as to what to expect. I'd been a Vangelis fan for about a year and knew that his style could be rather eclectic. I'd really grown to love China, Soil Festivities, Albedo 0.39, and Beaubourg, each of which is very different from the others. Nothing quite prepared me for Invisible Connections though.
The Vangelis album it is most similar to is Beaubourg, although it is a much colder, harsher and more sterile sounding work. The warm analogue of Beaubourg has been replaced by colder more digital sounds. If you're looking for Chariots of Fire, then this isn't the CD for you.
Side one I just "got" immediately. It's a single track about 18 minutes long. The opening build up of percussion noises is intriguing, but it's the ending of this track that really affected me. A wailing synth sound cries out gently once. It is answered by a lower voice. The first voice cries out again, but this time no answer. The rest of the track is the first voice crying out for it's companion, but always unanswered. Maybe I'm reading too much into this but the end of side one is so haunting and sad, seemingly representing loss. I was deeply moved by this piece.
Side two comprises two shorter tracks. These I just don't get. I've listened to them several times, but I got none of the emotional connections that I'd found from the title track. I give this CD 4 stars based on the haunting first piece.
It's hard to know whether to recommend this album wholeheartedly. The sadness and emotion I get while listening to track 1 is based on my own interpretation of the meaning of the piece. You may listen to it and think "What was he talking about??" Approach with caution. Maybe you will hate side 1 and love side 2! It's all a question of "getting it".
Vangelis at his most experimental.......2006-07-14
Like "Beaubourg", this album is quite a departure from his other works. A fascinating listen, though some parts can get rather repetitious.
Contemplative, subtle, and eerily unsettling........2006-03-14
This is a profound foray into the Ambient style, but it requires an OPEN MIND, and time to become accustomed to its slightly Stockhausen-like rhythmic ruminations.
It's truly a masterpiece in its own right--there isn't anything else on the planet quite like it, and it demands a certain aesthetic maturity to fully appreciate.
Lie back and let the thick vibrations saturate your senses.

Great Family Music.......2003-02-15
We love all the 2 of a Kind music. Great for kids and adults of all ages.
6 year old music critic.......2002-04-28
I am a six year old boy (and this is his MOM). I loooooooove Two of a Kind. Your kid will, too. Your mom will, too. Your dad will, too. Your big sister will, too. Our family knows all the words to all these songs. I like Hey, Little Ant the best. I can be the ant or I can be the kid who would like to step on the ant. You can't go wrong here. Mom says: He's right on!!!
This music is GREAT for children!.......2000-04-24
I never tire of listening to these songs (and my children insist on listening to them continuously) - on CONNECTIONS as well as on David & Jenny Heitler-Klevans' other albums (LOVE MAKES A FAMILY, FRIENDS) with my two-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter. The messages in each and every song are wonderful: protecting and preserving the natural world, lauding historical heroes and their visions, like Paul Robeson, Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman; celebrating reading, and literary favorites, like Nate the Great, The Magic Schoolbus' Ms. Frizzle, and Harriet the Spy (the latter of which is a hilariously stylized tour-de-force!); songs about other cultures, languages, and how we are "all different, and still alike.."; songs that promote peace and justice, as well as those that touch on issues like poverty and the true meaning of democracy. It's almost too good to be true: songs that convey positive social messages that are neither heavy-handed nor inaccessible. The music itself is of a high caliber, and sparkles with variety and style. If you are looking for music that is socially relevant, environmentally friendly, tolerant, fun to sing along with, musically interesting and full of positive messages for our children, buy this album or any other one by these artists. They are my FIRST choice for presents for our children's friends!

Album Description
Legendary folk singer Richie Havens has issued numerous albums over the past 35 years. Best know for his appearance at Woodstock, very few of his albums are available on CD. Wounded Bird Records helps rectify that with the worldwide CD debut of his 1981 Elektra album Connections. It features guest musicians Rick Derringer, Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter, Elliott Randall and Richard Tee. He does his unique interpretations of Stevie Nicks 'Dreams', Paul McCartney's 'Every Night' and the Sam Cooke classic 'You Send Me'. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, fun, fun!.......2002-06-03
This CD is lots of fun. Paul McCartney's "Every Night", Sam Cooke's "You Send Me", Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight" and "Fire Down Below", Tom Waits' "Ol' 55", and Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" interpreted in a manner that only Richie Havens could envision! Pretty cool!
For true fans only.......2002-05-16
This is a reissue of Richie's 1981 release, originally on the Elektra label. It represents the beginning of Richie's foray into the pop arena. Although I am a big Richie Havens fan, I've got to say that this album doesn't suit him at all. There are a couple of gems, however. "Going Back To My Roots" is a real toe-tapper, while "She Touched My Heart" and "Here's A Song" are nice ballads. On the whole, this record is largely forgettable and really only for the completist that has to have everything Richie has done.
Tracklisting:
1. Mama We're Gonna Dance
2. Every Night (Paul McCartney cover)
3. You Send Me (Sam Cooke cover)
4. We've Got Tonight (Bob Seger cover)
5. Ol' 55 (Tom Waits cover)
6. Going Back To My Roots
7. Dreams (Fleetwood Mac cover)
8. She Touched My Heart
9. Fire Down Below (Bob Seger cover)
10. Here's A Song
FINALLY!.......2002-05-15
So glad someone has finally seen fit to get this album out on cd. The classic track " Going Back To My Roots" has been a club hit in Europe since it came out, and almost impossible to find in print. The cover art (Richie Havens gazing at a blurry World Trade Center) is truly surreal. More re-releases from this great artist please!

Album Description
This set is a sincere homage to an unfairly forgotten jazzwoman whose style brought a refreshing and individual voice in the tumultuous New York jazz scene of the 50s. Barbara Carroll is known among female piano players, as the first to venture into the progressive Bop style that was especially associated with Bud Powell. These 4 CDs hold Barbara Carroll's complete trio recordings under her leadership between 1951 and 1956. A successful recording period which spans sixteen studio sessions and 77 tunes originally released on 6 LPs, 2 EPs and 2 anthologies, cut for two of the best labels in the genre: Atlantic and RCA Victor. The set includes comprehensive biographic notes on 16-page book let, full of historic pictures, original vinyl art work and session details. Jazz Connections. 2007.

Album Description
At the time Miles Davis recorded these three 1951-1955 sessions, the trumpet player had just begun his soon-to-be spectacular career. As part of five milestone Prestige and Blue Note albums, these tracks feature some of the most representative young lions of its time, including Sonny Rollins, Milt Jackson, J.J. Johnson, Ray Bryant, Oscar Pettiford, Charles Mingus and Art Blakey among others. This complete collection of studio recordings under the leadership of Davis, is dedicated to the memory of Jackie McLean, a tribute to one of the most misunderstood Jazzmen in the history of modern Jazz whose cohesive, solid phrasing and distinct, harsh-like sonority would make him into one of the most representative Jazzmen of a Blues-full hard Bop style. Jazz Connections. 2007.
