Not Dogs Too Simple (A Tale of Two Kitties)
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This feline twist on the Prince and the Pauper involves the misadventures of a rough-and-tumble cat, Shenanigans, the leader of a gang of streetwise toms, and an indoor cat, Luis, "a colorful collar-wearing member of the bourgeoisie." Despite her opulence and life of luxury in a country club condominium, Luis craves her freedom, or at least a day away from Madam. What happens when Shenanigans tricks her into leaving for the streets (and he assumes her cushy lifestyle in Luis's absence) forms the crux of this delightful story. By the time the cast, headed by a Cockney narrator (cocreator Clay Harper) named Ali Cat, finishes its imaginative 17-song drama, both Shenanigans and Luis realize that "happiness is more than just comfort and splendor or excitement and adventure. Happiness comes from knowing that you're loved and needed, and loving and needing others as well." A valuable lesson for high-tailed kitties, discontented kiddos, and the parents who love them. The music falls into a quirky rock realm, not at all grating and compelling enough to meet the demands of adults and their younger colleagues. --Alanna Nash
