The second installment of the "Greatest Classics" series again sidesteps the obvious in favor of the vaguely familiar and unusual. As an intro, Beethoven's 9th Symphony is nudged aside by his springlike "Pastoral Symphony"; its first part, "The Awakening of Cheerful Impressions," does just what its title promises. Some music can be traced to the TV as a ready reference point--kids will have caught Offenbach's riotous "Can Can" in cartoons where one-upmanship is the theme and more than a couple commercials have jingled Pachelbel's "Canon in D." But it's the arrangements that so effectively stamp out intimidation. The piano-pounding sharpness of Chopin's "Grand Waltz Brilliante," for instance, is mellowed by mandolin and guitars, and Bizet's "Habanera" takes on a playful puffiness when performed on trumpet and tuba. Cue it up for kids over 4 and the selections will smooth the wrinkles in their understanding of what classical means. --Tammy La Gorce
