When I Was Young: Children's Songs From Ireland
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Vocalists Len Graham and Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin are accompanied by a number of musicians and the multitalented player and producer Garry Ó Briain on a collection of songs that kids will appreciate and love and that parents will both remember on occasion, and enjoy throughout. It's never cutesy or cloying and offers both the repetitive songs that younger children love and some clever (and once or twice scary) songs that grab the older kids' attention. Throughout the album the musicianship is high, with a special nod to accordion work of Mairtin O'Conner that's quite impressive. When I Was Young is a step above the current bumper crop of preachy or New Age children's records that masquerade as "Celtic." This one will actually have them clamoring for some of the real (adult) thing in a few years. --Louis Gibson

Customer Reviews:
A gorgeous Celtic album...!.......2003-08-20
Not actually a "various artists" release, however: Len Graham, Garry O Briain and vocalist Padraigin Ni Uallachain are all co-collaborators on this fine Celtic outing. A lovely and delightful album, featuring pretty, lavishly melodic versions of over two dozen obscure Irish children's songs. Graham's old-man voice is always a delight, while for her part Ni Uallachain fills these songs out with a classic Celtic sonorousness. The material is pleasantly unfamiliar, playful and engaging, while the arrangements are richly fleshed out and satisfying. Nice disc -- highly recommended, especially as the title might lead some Celtic music fans to pass it by.
Children's music that adults will treasure, too.......2001-10-19
This is an astounding collection of songs that are so varied and beautiful, I would recommend them to anyone with children. The mood varies from lighthearted and funny to sweet and wide-eyed with even a little touching melancholy thrown in to keep things truly Irish. If these songs don't stay in your heart, I don't know what will. At the risk of sounding like a total sap, I once danced around the kitchen with my 2 year-old daughter to the song, "Magical Band" and she smiled happily, wondering why my eyes were filling with tears.
A must have for any childs music library.......2000-08-27
This is a wonderful cd with excellent musical quality. The music is a much higher quality than the typical childrens cd's available. My 1 year old daughter can't help moving to the music whenever its played. Lyrical content of a few songs is rather dark, but this is a cd that the parents will enjoy as much as the children.
Great for dancing.......2000-08-13
My 3 year-old daughter loves dancing to this lively, fun-filled music. The voices are beautiful and harmonious and the music up-beat and perfectly paced for a young child. While the lyrics to a couple of the songs are rather gruesome, the music itself is never dark but always light and airy. I would definately recommend this CD not only as an introduction to the delights of irish music but as a joyful experience on its own, and not only for children. This is one of my favorite irish music CDs, for the quality of the singing and the choice of songs. It ranks high up on my list of possible gifts for friends of all ages.
