Cathy & Marcy Collection for Kids
Editorial Reviews
From Parents' Choice®
Here's a lively, idiosyncratic collection of songs from the folk-inspired duo of Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer. All but two of the seventeen songs are available on their earlier individual albums (Grandma Slid Down the Mountain, jump Children, When the Rain Comes Down) and a similar (but not identical) version of Buffalo Gals appears on the sampler album Grandma's Patchwork Quilt. Their voices - jaunty and spontaneous - solo, à deux, à cappella or accompanied by their own nimble-fingered picking present favorites like Malvina Reynold's Magic Penny, Gary Rosen's It's a Beautiful Day, and the traditional Grandpa's Form. Either as introduction or reacquaintance, the album's casual, relaxed style is an invitation to let loose and sing along.

Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age is the sequel to Itzhak Perlman's popular album of movie themes performed with soundtrack composer John Williams. Unlike its predecessor, this disc focuses on classic cinema themes and features the Boston Pops Orchestra, not the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Laura theme, as well as Max Steiner's Now Voyager and Miklós Rózsa's Lost Weekend themes, sound lush and romantic in Perlman's lyrical hands. The traditional Irish jig "The Quiet Man" is the disc's most upbeat moment, while the unforgettable Gone with the Wind theme is its most memorable. These are timeless, dreamy compositions, though not necessarily the most uplifting. If you're looking for something cinematic to get your heart racing, check out Ricardo Chailly's recording of Shostakovich's film scores or even Leopold Stokowski's classic work on Fantasia. --Jason Verlinde

Perlman, Williams reunite in wonderful Serenade sequel.......2003-12-04
With the success of Cinema Serenade, conductor John Williams and violinist Itzhak Perlman reunited to record another collection of classic movie themes. Performed this time by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the music of Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age harkens back to the days of stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Ray Milland and Clark Gable.
The 12 selections include themes by Hollywood legends Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (whose son George would later produce several of composer/conductor Williams' scores for Varese Sarabande Records). Cinema Serenade 2 presents beautiful arrangements of Steiner's themes for Now, Voyager and Gone With The Wind, Korngold's love theme from The Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie Chaplin's lovely Modern Times and "St Patrick's Day," a traditional Irish song from the John Wayne classic The Quiet Man.
Since I consider myself to be a charter member of The Rick Blaine Society of Rank Sentimentalists, I'd have to say my favorite tracks on this album are Herman Hupfeld's timeless "As Time Goes By" from 1942's Casablanca and Victor Young's "My Foolish Heart" (from the 1949 film of the same title). It was while I was listening to the radio (on the late WTMI 93.1 FM classical station) that the DJ played "As Time Goes By" and I discovered this recording of mostly lyrical themes; I listened to Perlman's haunting violin solos and the Boston Pops' bravura performance and nearly wept. I, of course, bought this CD the next day and it's now one of my favorites.
For fans of Itzhak Perlman, John Williams or film music in general, both of the Cinema Serenade CDs are a treasure trove of beautiful and memory-stirring themes.
Some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear.......2001-06-15
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever heard. The selections are musically much richer than Cinema Serenade I. In particular, Sir William Walton's music from Henry V, Korngold's music from Robin Hood, and Newman's music from Wuthering Heights are standouts. The Korngold is my favorite, with several themes from the picture packed into a short love scene lifted straight from the movie. The arrangements on this album are stunningly lush, especially those by Williams. His opening chords from The Uninvited are terrific harmonically.
Don't compare it to Cinema Serenade 1.......2000-01-24
Itzhak Perlman is still considered by me the best violinist alive today. His techiniques are so impressable and heartouching and nobody can contest that. The idea of this CD was wonderful, although the selections of the musics aren't so good than in Cinema Serenade 1. But anyway, if you want to listen musics that worldwide the people emotioned with, buy this CD, but don't fall in the temptation to compare it to the first one.
I can't stop listening to this CD...........1999-10-03
All of those lush movie themes are greatly compiled on this CD. I especially liked Laura and Stella by Starlight. After listening to this, you will want to go out and buy/rent these great old movies!

When Dance Music was Dance Music.......2007-06-22
I bought this album a few months ago for the song "Just Another Dream"; it brought back memories of when Dance music was actually music and not the processed, remixed trash that it's *generally* become today. I've found that I like most of this album, most notably "All Night Long (Touch Me)" and "C'mon and Get My Love". (I feel that "Too Many Walls" didn't really belong on this album; it seemed very out of place) Cathy Dennis is a talented singer/songwriter, and I am grateful to her for turning out one of the best dance albums of the 90's. Any fan of Dance music should give this album a try, if only to hear music one can actually dance to.
LOVE HER VOICE!!!.......2007-01-04
Cathy Dennis has a great voice for Pop Music. This CD is great to have as compilation.
Soulful Dance Diva.......2006-01-06
Awesome, Moving. Cathy confronts the issues of love in an upbeat euphoric and soulful manner, is this for real or "Just Another Dream" and the sexy "Touch Me (All Night Long), the dance hit featuring D Mob "C'mon And Get My Love", the hard to get love ballad of "Too Many Walls", the lost love ballad "Tell Me". the saucy dancefloor classic "Everybody Move", show me a sign of how you feel in "Move To This". The sweet romantic feelings of love in "My Beating Heart", the commitphobic "Got To Get Your Love" and giving love a chance with "Taste My Love".

good songwriter with good music.......2005-12-31
I remember loving the song Touch Me in the 90's and just wrote her off as one of the other europop artists to come and disappear. But then in this decade I heard that she was the songwriter behind Kylie's Can't Get You Out of My Head, Britney Spears Toxic and a track from Janet Jackson's Damita Jo CD called "Island Life". Cathy is a very talented songwriter who has the potential to enhance the dance/pop genre if she continued writing songs for many other artists, or made a comeback herself since dance music is coming back thanks to Madonna with her latest album Confessions on a Dancefloor.
One of the best early '90s albums.......2005-06-07
I bought this album after Touch Me went down on the charts and Too Many Walls would later become the next single in early 1991. Little did I know that this album would be the stepping stone to where she is now as a songwriter and artist. This is a solid dance album all the way with a huge emphasis on melodies and rhythms! I still love C'mon and Get Your Love, Just Another Dream, Touch Me and many of the other funky dance numbers on here. And I hear Too Many Walls a lot in some stores here--it's timeless sound still holds up. Dennis could really pull it off on a much slower, softer song. I think people were drawn to the song's low key, quiet landscapes against the more hyper hip-hop driven songs that it had to compete with on the charts. When I think of Cathy's recent successes with Kylie Minogue's comeback 2001-2002 hit Out of my Head and the endless playing of the catchy American Idol theme song that she co-wrote, I can credit this first album as its influence. A classic '90s album in all its true sense!

Mary Martin created Broadway's most famous "trousers" role in the original 1954 cast of Peter Pan, but former Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby has proven to be a worthy successor. She earned a Tony nomination for the 1991 revival, has toured extensively, and starred in the 2000 video production. While the classic J.M. Barrie story of the boy who wouldn't grow up has seen many musical treatments (including Leonard Bernstein in 1950 and Disney in 1953), this version is probably the best known, with such Moose Charlap-Carolyn Leigh songs as "I Gotta Crow," "Tender Shepherd," "I'm Flying," and "I Won't Grow Up," plus some additional material by Jule Styne and Betty Comden and Adolph Green (most notably "Neverland"). It's a charming family show well represented in this 1997 recording featuring Rigby along with Elisa Sagardia (Wendy) and Paul Shoeffler (Hook). --David Horiuchi

Peter Pan Flying High.......2006-03-03
My daughter is playing Wendy in a community youth theater production of Peter Pan. She has been singing along with the CD ever since we received it in the mail. Wonderful sound quality.
Great revival to the Original .......2005-03-14
Ever since I saw Cathy Rigby play Peter Pan in the 1997 production I was like Holy crap she plays this role very well!
The production on this CD is very well done! Unlike Mary Martin's CD! Mary Martin's CD is the worst Peter Pan CD I've ever heard! Cathy Rigby on the other hand she beats Mary Martin's production by a huge landslide! They also add parts of the play into the CD which makes the CD even more exciting! I saw Cathy Rigby on her final tour of Peter Pan and she was so amazing! Cathy Rigby Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cathy Rigby Is Peter Pan.......2004-12-20
Cathy Rigby is a very good Peter Pan. Her recording surpasses Mary Martin's by a landslide! Her voice is very good on this recording. She also has a DVD out for her production of Peter Pan. Cathy Rigby Rules
excellent studio recording of PETER PAN.......2004-01-21
This 1997 studio cast album of PETER PAN is a fine testament to this magical musical. Cathy Rigby, star of various Broadway runs and national tours of the show, gives thrilling voice to the title character, and is joined by a first-rate supporting cast.
Paul Schoeffler, also a veteran of the Broadway/national tour, is a great Captain Hook, especially during "Hook's Waltz" and "Hook's Tango". Traditionally, he also portrays the bombastic Mr Darling.
Elisa Sagardia is, like Rigby and Schoeffler, reprising her role of Wendy from the Broadway/national tour. She gives a lovely weight to "Tender Shepherd" and "Distant Melody". She also has a great voice.
Rounding out the cast are Susan Lamontagne as Tiger Lily, Lee Honey-Jones as John, Myles Anderson as Michael, Helen Hobson as Mrs Darling, Anne McVey as Liza, Susan Dale as Jane, Julian Forsythe as Smee and Jenny Agutter as the Narrator. [CDJAY 1280]
A great revival.......2000-12-31
Forty some ye3ars ago I saw Peter Pan on its premier performance on television. I bought the record with Mary Martin and I have loved it. I have to say that the Cathy Rigby recording is even better. Cathy beings a youthful presence in her songs. The recording itself is technologically better. The recording includes bits from the play not on the original. And the whole recoding seems to have a life the original does not have. "I'm Flying" is exhilerating. "Once Upon a Time Long Ago" has a more haunting ache. The timing of the songs is different, but not worse than the original. Ms. Rigby is not trying to copy Ms. Martin. Which means for Peter Pan lovers there are two distinctive performances to appreciate. I wish I could see Ms. Rigby on stage. I saw Sandy Duncan some years ago and she was good. This is a great recording.

Timelessly Innovative.......2005-12-17
It is well known that this album has inspired many women to enter into the blues music industry. I recently purchased this smart cd-- I am sorry to say that I waited so long to do so. Between the sheer anger of the song "Suffer" to the soul-full desparation of "*4 in the morning", I am completely impressed, and a permanent fan.
Outstanding!.......2002-12-03
Outstanding! Really made my day. Cathy Jean's not only the best looking female blues singer in the biz, but her voice can make the hair on my back stand up. She and her band got it going on.
Michigan Swing Dance Association!.......2002-02-10
This is another in the fine outings by the very sexy Cathy Jean. The emotion she displays is certainly displayed on the Louisiana style cut, "Unfinished Business". "Leave Me Alone" is a song of an entirely different style being that it's more bluesy in the traditional sense. Dancers will be knocked out by this hard driving tune along with "I'm Your Girl" which is just a bit quicker but with the same power to make you get up and dance.
sophistication and downhome grease.......2001-12-19
Cathy Jean is a singer/songwriter out of Baltimore, Maryland. This is her second CD, and her sound has moved towards a sophisticated blues and rock, with some contemporary influences. She has a voice that is well suited to this eclectic approach, capable of crooning in one song, and belting out a hard shuffle in the next. The music kicks off with "Be Glad", a hard shuffle, followed by the title track, a crisp blues rocker. Cathy and band then move into some jazzy funk in "**4 in the Morning**", a little of the Bo Diddley beat in "Unfinished Business", then back into the funk with "How Many". "Leave Me Alone" is a rocker with a definate soul feel, which gives way to "Why Don't You See Me", a jazzy ballad. The band then cranks out a sharp shuffle, that recalls the 70's Albert Collins sound, followed by "Please Stop Seeing That Girl", a funky acoustic blues that showcases yet another facet of Cathy Jean's voice. Dancers in the crowd are served next with the catchy rocking blues, "I'm Your Girl", then comes the sultry "See You Tomorrow", and the acoustic country-blues of "Blues Singin' Alcoholic". Next up is the New Orleans style rocker, "I Want Your Mother To Know/Rotten B." which Cathy belts out with authority. This CD closes with a nice slow blues and a gospelish blues that is a inventive synthesis of genres. SUMMARY: Cathy Jean has come up with an energetic set of blues, jazz and contemporary-blues that fits the 90's to a T. She has real fire in her voice, and all of the music here is driven by a genuine sense of passion that makes the songs literally jump out at you from the speakers. A great mix of sophistication and downhome grease. --Al Handa, Delta Snake Daily Blues

A compilation between Australia's favorite export, the Ten Tenors, film score icon John Barry, and famed lyricist Don Black. Here's To The Heroes has all the epic sweep, swoon, swashbuckle, and pure entertainment value of the many great films Barry has adorned with his timeless music.
Customer Reviews:
Quite powerful and sentimental.......2007-02-26
I found this album very moving, with tremendously rich vocals and instrumentals. It has a strong sentimentality to its sound, which I found highly appealing. But if you see yourself as above all that, this album will be easy to criticize, as some of the comments below attest.
In my mind, this music is more like show tunes, and less like a classical operatic rendition. And for that, it is quite well done. My favorite song is Bongiorno Principesa (sp?), which is quite moving and deeply romantic. One does not have to know Italian to understand love in song.
If other classical cross-over, such as Andrea Bocelli appeals to you, I strongly suggest you give it a try.
Disappointing Sound.......2007-02-16
The sound level from song to song is inconsistent. Requiring frequent volume adjustment. Several songs the orchestra overshadows the voices. The songs are beautiful.
The 10 Tenors.......2007-01-10
This CD has the best selection yet in my opinion for these wonderful voices..It really portrays how well they blend together and also how they accompany the Solos....I find it very relaxing driving and have had this
playing constantly in the car going back and forth to work.....The Music is superb I bought their other CD also which is great but this is THE favourite..I hope you enjoy it..
Great CD.......2007-01-04
I bought this CD b/c "Here's to the Hero's" was played at my cousin's funeral. He was killed in a plane crash fighting forest fires in California. The song was so beautiful and very moving, especially at an unexpected funeral, such as this one. It was the first time I had ever heard of them. I love the CD. It's a bit cheesy putting words to all these movie soundtrack themes. (Here's the Hero's is to the theme of Dances With Wolves). However, it is a very nice CD. I listen to it all the time. Actually, I have another CD by John Barry (Movie Themes) that I've had for a long time. After I bought the Ten Tenors, practically every song on here is on that John Barry (Instramental) CD. They just put words to theirs.
Over the Top Vocals.......2006-10-19
I know I will probably get slammed by people for not totally disliking or completely loving this CD. I am in the middle although I lean... overall it is a bit much. Some of the arrangements of this Australian vocal power group could use a little restraint. That being said however, some of the tracks are simply amazing. I am a big James Bond fan and "You Only Live Twice" is powerful. The Queen anthem from the Highlander movies, "Who Wants to Live Forever" is stunning. The Gladiator suite from the movie brings a new dimension with the all-male vocals making it an edgier version. If you are a big fan of movie scores and even bigger popera vocals, this CD is for you. Of course, this CD may be over the top but some of the tracks are worth keeping it on repeat so you may want the options of purchasing individual tracks. That said, turn this up on your stereo system to hear the full power of ten amazing tenor voices on this John Barry-helmed CD.

The producers of Mike Leigh's vibrant Topsy-Turvy took many big studio meetings seeking financing for their film. Word has it all went swimmingly until time for the pitch came--there are apparently no two words as unsettling to Hollywood film execs as "Gilbert & Sullivan." But the studio system's loss turned out to be the indie film's--and our--gain. Leigh's film brought the composers' late-19th-century mounting of their breakthrough The Mikado to an all-too-familiar life, filled with as many neuroses, foibles, and fragile egos as any modern Broadway musical. The film's score, an inviting pastiche adapted from Mikado (and other G&S staples) by veteran Carl Davis, may upset purists with its time-conscious liberties. But then, it might just win over a receptive yet unexposed new audience for whom this music may seem strangely familiar, as well it should: this is where modern musical theater began. --Jerry McCulley

Here's a How-De-Do!.......2007-02-22
It's brilliant, really! I am a self-confessed Gilbert and Sullivan fanatic, and so the release of this soundtrack to accompany a truly delightful movie provided me with an "Oh, joy! Oh, rapture!" moment ... many of them, actually! To hear some of my favorite tunes from some of my favorite G & S operetti performed so well makes my heart "sing-o" - and me, too!
Topsy-Turvy is TOPS!!!.......2007-02-21
This is Gilbert and Sullivan like you will never hear again! These performances are so fresh and alive with comedy flourish that my formerly "purist" ears reveled in delight at this magnificeant rendition of these great operettas. It is wonderful to hear excerpts from PRINCESS IDA,IOLANTHE and SORCERER (as well as THE MIKADO) when so many recordings already exist of the other G&S chestnuts,PINAFORE and PIRATES OF PENZANCE.
The actual cd itself fills the speakers and is a true listener's dream.A great soundtrack of a great film.Wonderfully recorded by SONY.
Superb.......2005-02-25
This is a fantastic cd, one that I have listened to many many times without growing tired of it. The particularly nice thing about this cd for lovers of the movie is that you get to hear the entire performance for many songs which are necessarily cut short in the film, most enjoyably "A Wandring Minstrel I". As has been noted in other reviews, the vocal performances are not what you will typically find in other G & S recordings: they are far less burdened with mannered belle canto nonsense, to their immense benefit. And I must disagree with one reviewer who disparaged the staging as portrayed in the film. My wife and I saw a touring production of the Mikado which used the costumes and set from the movie, and it was fantastic. Even better, the performers seemed to take some cues from the film actors too, singing and performing in a way that was much more accessible and not a bit less pleasing.
Better than many a G&S non-sountrack.......2003-09-16
I was compelled to get this after seeing the overlong, flawed, but nonetheless all-around amazing 'Topsy Turvy'. (Seriously - almost every supporting actor in the film deserved an Oscar, and Jim Broadbent was robbed; his Gilbert is magnificent and real.)
Inspired then to hear a true G&S performance, I bought several Carte recordings. What broke my heart is that the genuine Savoy performances are not as good as those of the 'Topsy' actors! Contrary to a review here, the articulation is just dandy. And the tenor in 'Wand'ring Minstrel' alone is far, far superior to the thin, reedy, annoying versions on the several concert cds I've heard. As is the riveting soprano on the beautiful 'The Sun Whose Rays...' of 'Topsy'; again, the actual Savoy recordings are merely shrill in comparison.
I remove one star only because of the necessarily abbreviated performances here.
Put on the CD, close your eyes and..........2003-03-02
You are back in the Savoy Theater in Victorian England, watching a Gilbert and Sullivan production of the Mikado, or Yeoman of the Guard, or the Sorcerer, or Princess Ida. The qualiity of the music is superb, the voices are wonderful and I only wish I could have videos of all the G&S productions to watch along with the music.
Buy the DVD of Topsy-Turvy if you don't already own it. It's magnificent. See my other review.

Album Description
Give me a live recording, with studio talk, over a slick, produced specimen any day. "Tear Me Apart" by Cathy Jean has just that right amount of ambient acoustics and chatter that implore me to listen, listen, listen. Add to that the sheer audacity to cover Muddy, James Cotton, and Bo Diddley on her first try, and the attraction factor multiplies tenfold. This CD was on my "must hear" list immediately. I have to honestly say that on first hearing, by the time I reached the second tune, "Hello Little Boy", I was hooked. Pull the car over and collect yourself. This voice jumps right out at you. Take your pick... You can either jump around or just listen. This young woman has the voice that launched a thousand ships. She also did her homework. This second cut that took me by the throat is a fast jump blues with that "shake rattle and roll" feel. It's a raucous twelve bar free for all that launches Cathy's vocal pyrotechnics on a three stage rocket, all the way through the entire CD. Her falsetto lilt and raspy bluesy phrasing pose a commanding presence. Her expressive teasing vibrato adds color to an already complicated but pleasant texture. "Ain't That Lovin' You" has her swearing her undying love in a sometimes smooth as silk delivery that tears the heart out of every twisting, bending note of the chorus. She's got guts galore as she tackles an a cappella "That's All Right". This is a chancy, but successful, minimalist voyage that develops into an impromptu scatting exercise that wrings gobs of emotion out of every tortured phrase. J.B. Lenoir could not have imagined so fine an interpretation of "Mama Talk To Your Daughter". She changes the words to make the content more believable, and the song becomes her own. She does the same to Bo Diddley's "I'm A Man". The arrangement remains faithful to the original, but her good natured, sassy interpretation, never stops looking for new ways of expressing itself. Surely this performance was created on the spot. If not, good luck to any of you aspiring vocalists out there who attempt to copy the style and give up after a few attempts. "Rock This House" is a jumping, boogie-woogie, rock and rolling bar blaster that would galvanize the most passive listeners. The almost laid back, jazzy guitar solo adds tension to an already racing vehicle about to lose control. Another Bo Diddley standard, "Who Do You Love", gets the same emotional, let-me-at'em approach, that consistently defines this lady's approach. To be fair, a little more attention should have been paid to the production, but the raw energy compensates in a very acceptable way. "Sweet Blood Call" is a dramatic staging of a scary but humorous scenario of a woman holding a cocked pistol in the mouth of her unfaithful lover. She's threatening to shoot his brains out as she taunts him with deliciously submissive Freudian overtones that exemplify the inner strength of this character who embodies all that is evil, and right, at the same time. Swooping, soaring falsetto turnarounds become part of her signature as she re-invents the blues. Another turn at mock violence surfaces in "You The Kind Of Women"-- "You're the kind of man that makes me want to beat you to death". She's only kidding, but are we sure? Menacing couldn't be sweeter. --Ira Bolterman, Tri-State Blues Society

I am just completely blown away by Cathy's vocals here!!!! This is a live studio album-- pre-internet and digital tools to fix things up-- her vocal movement and sheer energy on every song is wild and impeccable.

Ever heard of Pat Benatar? Well, this beauty has a great deal of her power and emotion but with a bit more range in her voice. Several tunes on this album are good for dancing, including "Trouble No More", "Ain't That Lovin' You", and my favorite "Mama, Talk To Your Daughter". This particular CD has a great backup band that push her to the limit. --Bud Budzynski
A promising debut.......2001-11-23
On this self-released CD Cathy Jean demonstrates her unique vocal prowess and her love of, and feel for, the blues. Jean insisted on recording live in the studio with very few over dubs. As a result, "Tear Me Apart" has a loose, spontaneous feel. At times, such as on "Ain't That Livin' You", Cathy Jean's vocals are reminiscent of the late, great Janis Joplin. A little thin in the higher part of her register, she nevertheless puts a song across with soul and feeling. Her detectable influences include Ruth Brown and Dinah Washington. Jean can rock out, as evidenced on "Rock This House" and "Who Do You Love", and be sweet and sensual on tunes such as "Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me", the classic Billie Holiday tune that she manages to make her own. A promising debut. --Elena Skye, Blues Revue Magazine
Congradulations.......2001-01-08
I was pleasantly suprised from the quality of the arrangements (Rollin & Tumblin, Sweet Blood Call) and the catchy versions (One Good Man, Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me). For me, "Tear Me Apart" was the best new blues album of 1996. I put it on top of my top ten list. I give the album rave reviews.
asks for more!.......2001-01-06
On this debute, Baltimore-based Cathy Jean serves us 14 bluesstandards interpreted very personally and recorded live in the studio. Jump blues like "Hello little boy" and "Ain't that lovin' you". Muddy's "Trouble no more", well supported by Mookie Siegel's Hammond B-3 is the opener and "I'm a man", here with a strong female touch, would get approval from the master. The slightly inflammable "Who do you love" turns into a molotov-cocktail turning George Thorogood into a schoolboy. Cathy is the lucky owner of a versatile, expressive voice, manifested once again on the a-capella "That's all right" and Duke Ellington's "Do nothing"; LADY sings the blues. "One good man" recalls Janis Joplin. Cathy Jean can easily stand the comparison vocally without sounding like so many others with the gripes or constipation. This CD offers us good smelling, spicy and, most of all, honest dishes out of Cathy Jean's kitchen. This little boy's empty plate asks for more! --Marc Nolis, Hogtown News, Nov. '96

As good as her debut album........2006-11-26
"Into The Skyline", Cathy Dennis' follow-up to her multi-platinum "Move To This" is every bit as good as her debut. The dance beats are infectious, the hooks are catchy, and the songwriting and instrumentation are first-rate.
More a victim of changing musical trends than anything else, this album (which didn't do well sales-wise) is criminally underrated. If you are at all a fan of the house-infused music on "Move To This", I can almost guarantee you'll like this CD.
On a side note, I've always felt bad for artists like Cathy Dennis, who - through absolutely no fault of their own - suddenly find themselves out of favor with the music-buying public because of its fickle taste. And, while some artists like the Bee Gees and Duran Duran are able to return to prominence later, others like Ms. Dennis can no longer make a living at their chosen craft and must turn to other avenues. While Cathy has had phenomenal success writing songs for Kylie Minogue and the like, it must rankle that she, a talented dance artist in her own right, must remain behind the scenes and in the control booth - instead of on stage as many of us (and perhaps the lady herself) would prefer.
An underrated, immaculate dance-pop album..........2006-03-11
I purchased this CD almost ten years ago (I was 14) and to this day it stands as one of my favorite dance-pop albums. Though this sophomore effort by one of the UK's highest paid women (as another reviewer mentioned, her songwriting credits for Pop/American Idol, Britney, Kylie, and others have earned her some major $$$ in royalties)was poorly recieved upon it's release in 1992, it should be considered ahead of it's time as it mirrors the dance pop that exploded globally in the late 90's and early 2000's. The songs on this set (largely co-produced by remix/dance extraordinaire Shep Pettibone) are immensely infectious and range from housy, gospel-tinged pop to luscious, AC balladry; they offer a little something for everyone. Uptempo numbers like first single "You Lied To Me" and the bouncy "Irresistable" are just that, and the ballads on here showcase Cathy's gorgeous vocals and remarkable songwriting chops. The standout track for me is the stunning, Carpenters-esque gem "Moments of Love". With it's sweeping strings, touching & tender melody, and Ms. Dennis' delicate yet soulful vocal delivery, this tune is a classic in my book.
Unfortunately, after the disc failed to make a significant impact on the charts (to my knowledge, "You Lied To Me" and "Irresistable" barely missed the top 40 in the US and "Moments of Love" was a minor hit on AC radio), Dennis drifted into pop obscurity thereafter, with the exception of the crtically-acclaimed yet commerically-panned 'Am I The Kinda Girl?.
For the true pop enthusiast, this CD is a must.
This CD Rocks!.......2006-03-07
"You Have Another Lover" is a serious dance track, to which you can not stop tapping your feet at about 80bpm. If you like to dance, and I mean serious, wild, crazy bump and grind dance then you will love this CD.
Amazingly underated album.......2005-11-05
Cathy Dennis' sophomore album was more a victim of changing trends in music than lack of quality. Following up her mega-successful debut "move to this", Cathy teamed up with dance producer Shep Pettibone (who was simultaneously producing Madonna's also poorly recieved Erotica album) to create an album that blended early 90s dance rhythms with a mellow, adult contemporary sound.
First single "You lied to me" was high dance floor drama with its chugging rhythms and soaring keyboards. An accussatory Cathy tells her lover the game is up and she has caught him cheating. It was a minor top 40 hit in the US. Subsequent singles didnt crack the top forty in the US but did well in in her native UK and Japan.
Overall the album is a great piece of work. Standout tracks are the summery sound of "Irresistible", the bouncy europop of "Why?" and the gorgeous ballad "moments of love".
Other tracks are also fairly standard but enjoyable dance-pop which could have easily been on her first album. "Change will come" and "We've got to fight" certainly sound like holdovers from those sessions.
This album features Cathy on songwriting credits for nearly all tracks showing her desire to grow as an artist.
The album didnt do well and cathy queickly went behind the scenes to write for other artists. But this album is an awesome addition to anyone's collection who appreciates fine pop songs and a a lovely voice. RECOMMENDED!
Beautifully Done.......2005-08-12
Growing up in the 90s, this cd brings back great memories, being a teenager, and just enjoying life, I liked "Why" but my favorite track off of this cd is "Moments of Love", it is such a beautiful song, and she sings with it with such feeling, and it always got me. I realize that things change and she is doing work for other artists, but in her time she shined, and ones like me never forgot.

Great compilation of Cathy Music!.......2005-02-21
Finally got this one after a lot of debating whether or not it would be worth it. Well, I'm not sorry I bought it! As a matter of fact, the compilation is a lot better than expected on account of the different version of "Touch me (all night long) and the slightly dancier sounding "Move to This".
When I first heard of Cathy Dennis back in the 1990, my immediate reaction was "Who is that?" I couldn't believe her voice...and couldn't wait to see the face that went with the voice. As soon as i heard "Touch me...", I was sold!
Hmmmmm...it seems they knew exactly what they were doing when they put on the UK single version of "Touch Me (all night long)" on this compilation. I think it's the perfect way to start a "Greatest Hits" cd. My sensitive ears caught this different version right away. LOL
The first time I played this CD compilation, "Irresistable", I fell in love with Cathy all over again. Too bad she's not recording anymore. :( I must add...the first time i heard "Touch me..." was in Montreal city on a late summer evening, blaring out of a dance club in the gay district.
And i admit I was hooked on her right away! Unfortunately, I ended up buying "Move to this" at a very high price in the high "double-digits". But it was worth it, because I supported an underrated and underappreciated pop star.
And it's a shame because she really deserved to be more famous, as mentioned in a recent review on here.
Yes...she did it all and she did it perfectly! I honestly admit that the songs on the 2nd half of "Irresistable" aren't as great as her earlier material, but she still had the voice, as cute as ever!
I love it when an artist writes her/his own music and can make it big in the music industry. Where are all the female artists like Cathy?
This disc is definitely the cream of the crop, because I listened to the "Am I the Kind of girl" cd and i didn't care for it as a whole. But they did add the best songs from there, onto here!
I hope she records again someday because she has collaborated with great artists since "Irresistable" came out. Look at Celine Dion...she wrote the song "Reveal" for Celine's "One Heart" album. And that song is the best one on the cd!
Since Cathy's Debut with "Move to this", I've never tired of the album. It was always something I'd put on the stereo, close my eyes and drift away to her voice. "Too many walls" has always been a favorite "Singalong" song. Very easy to follow and feel good to.
Same with "You lied to me", from "Into the skyline". Darn...what a great album that happened to be too! I find "Into the skyline" to be a more quiet album, except for "Everybody get up" which should've been on "Irresistable". Awww, too bad! LOL

Perfect title.......2005-02-05
Ah, Cathy Dennis, we hardly knew ya...
And it's a shame because she really deserved to be more famous. She did it all: wrote 'em, sang 'em, produced 'em. And this disc is the cream of the crop.
Six songs are from her irresistible (sorry!) debut 'Move To This', five from the OK 'Into the Skyline', and seven from one of the great lost pop albums of the 90s 'Am I the Kinda Girl'.
Cathy's songs are dance and pop gems. They stay in your head long after you're done listening... which makes sense because this is the same woman who wrote Kylie Minogue's worldwide monster hit "Can't Get You Out of My Head" (she also wrote Britney's "Toxic").
Cathy's debut, 'Move to This', is dance happy, kicking off with the one-two punch of the brilliant "Just Another Dream" and "Touch Me". She also slows things down with the seductive "Tell Me" and the reflective "Too Many Walls". Overall a solid first album.
Her second, 'Into the Skyline' has always seemed to me to be cold. I think this may have had to do with her teaming up with Shep Pettibone to produce. There's a distance to these songs, but "Irresistible" really connects.
And then... ah, her third, and sadly, last album, 'Am I the Kinda Girl'. This was such an unexpected departure from her two previous dance albums: it was straight up POP. The title track has one of the great guitar riffs EVER, as Ms. Dennis plays her gender bending games. And it contains one of my favorite lines, "Am I the kinda screw that your toolbox lacks?" Mercy! Other standouts are the charging "That is Why You Love Me", and her gorgeous cover of the Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset" (Ray Davies even co-wrote a song with Cathy, "The Date", which is on this collection).
These days Cathy is more behind the scenes writing and producing... AND she's also been listed as one of the Top 5 richest women in England (probably from writing the themes to "Pop Idol" and its American conterpart called... well, you know...).
I hope she records again someday, but in the meantime, pick up this disc! You'll find it... irresistible.
Cathy to Kylie.......2004-05-06
After all that she didn't really disappear, now she's writing for Kylie.
Definitely Irresistable.......2001-07-21
Cathy Dennis entered the music scene more than a decade ago as vocalist for the dance outfit DMOB. After two dance-oriented projects, she seemingly disappeared from sight. This compilation is essential for any Dennis fan, containing music from those two albums, as well as her detour into retro-styled pop with AM I THE KIND OF GIRL?, which wasn't released here in the states. Among the highlights, her hits 'Just Another Dream', 'You Lied To Me', and 'Touch Me(All Night Long)', as well as her best ballad performance, 'Too Many Walls'. The other ballads are fairly disposable and not very memorable, and among the great songs on her aforementioned third album, check out 'When Dreams Turn To Dust', and the cleverly biting 'The Date'. A good reminder of why Dennis, at her best, was pretty addictive.
A great collection of Cathy hits (and misses)!.......2001-03-21
'The Irresistible Cathy Dennis' is a perfect showcase for one of the 90's most underrated pop songwriters. Best of all, if you're a Dennis fan, many of the singles on 'Irresisitible' are rare 7" radio edits. Of course, singles from her early D-Mob days are missing, but that just means you'll have to collect them yourself :) For new fans: If you remember "Touch Me (All Night Long)", her biggest worldwide hit, you're bound to fall in love with nearly every track here. Lyrically simple, but highly melodic, this is essential pop.

We Can't Get Enough of this CD!.......2007-05-15
For the past few months we have listened to "Scat Like That" at LEAST once a day (no exaggeration!). With no TV, music is widely featured in our home and this music has been like our life soundtrack. My daughters have lots of CDs to choose from (75+), but when I ask them what they want to hear they both yell "Scat Like That"! There is really something amazing about this CD. No matter how many times we listen to it, we find new things to enjoy about it - and it really gets us dancing (sometimes we even get up to dance in the middle of dinner). We have many Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer CDs and enjoy them all depending on our mood and situation, but "Scat Like That" is magical!
Grandkids love it!.......2006-11-10
I bought 3 copies, one for each family of grandkids. They love it! Their parents love it more because the songs keep them busy singing and dancing along. Great CD.
Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange Review.......2005-12-20
[...]
I have always appreciated albums that respect children's ability to handle a variety of musical styles, and this is definitely one of them. From the "scat" of the title track, Cathy and Marcy branch out into a Latin rhythm, a polka, blues, even a sea shanty, taking kids on a musical adventure over land and sea.
The value in this collection of tunes comes not only in the diverse genres from which it is drawn. Interspersed between and within these delightful cuts are a variety of sound and word plays as well. Have you ever been around a kid who's just discovered knock-knock jokes? There's no doubt that the material here will be just as intriguing to the elementary-aged set. Limericks, yodeling, tongue twisters, riddles, and more spice it up to get those brains stretching and tongues wagging-in a good way! That's right-this collection of CDs has the added benefit of being (...Shh! Don't tell your kids!...) EDUCATIONAL!! Literacy, geography, social skills, Spanish, they're all here, with an extra helping of silliness that makes it more fun than anything to kids.
Here's what I found:
Scat Like That - "Ba bee ba da doo'n dee da'n doo da." Have you ever wondered how they do that?? This celebration of improvisational jazz singing, invites kids to exercise their "syllables, consonants, rhythm, and design."
Flip Flapjacks - Tongue twisters! Kids of all ages will enjoy wrapping their mouths around "double bubble gum, shredded swiss cheese," and more...
I Love Pie (Pastel) - A bilingual celebration of pie (pastel) to a rhythmic Latin beat!
A-E-I-O and U - A yodeling song! Yodeling from both the American West and the Swiss.
Fifty States - This song, written by Sally Rogers to the tune of Yankee Doodle, will put kids in the mood to march their way through the states. As an educator, I think this song can be considered a great one for helping to make memorization fun!
The Limerick Song - This one had my 15-year-old-daughter asking "Wait a minute...What did she say? How can that be?" New sillies in the old tradition of the limerick.
A Pirate's Life - A just-bawdy-enough sea shanty for the younger set, complete with all the right lingo. Now go swab the deck, matey! ARRRR!
Pig Latin Polka Dance - "Old Mac's" farm animals use a secret language to plan a secret "Igpay Atinlay Olkapay Anceday" and an unexpected guest shows up!
Dagnabbit! - A blues style exercise in "appropriate" and creative language, as a child on "time out" tries to come up with less offensive ways to express anger. An instrumental portion featuring blues harmonica (played by Howard Levy, with Ralph Gordon on bass) finishes it off.
A Riddle in the Middle - Classic plays on words, all to the hummin' of the fiddle and the strummin' of the banjo and mandolin. Kind of a kids' "Arkansas Traveler."
Black Socks - The "old camp song" performed in a round by the University Park Elementary School Ensemble.
Is Not, Is Too! - Written by Bill Harley, this cut highlights the struggle with learning to move beyond the dead-end "I'm right/you're wrong" argument and into a place of listening and really hearing each other in a dispute. As in "Dagnabbit!," Cathy & Marcy convey a child's perspective, creating safe ground from which to explore developing social skills.
It Only Takes a Minute - A one-minute exercise in how to say "I love you" twenty different ways, whether with a smile, with a "meal that's divine", or by saying it in Hawaiian (Aloha wau ia oi).
IM4U (by Jose Melis & Sev F. Marino) - A 10-line song made up of a letter and number puzzle!
Kids-and adult fans of music for kids-won't be disappointed by this upbeat collection of tunes, for which they have received their 11th GRAMMY nomination! Fortunately, all of the lyrics are included, 'cause you and your young ones might need a little help learning some of the more "strenuous" parts. I did! And, like me, I'm confident you'll have a blast doing it!
We love this cd!.......2005-11-03
From the first moment I put on this CD, my house was awhirl with dancing girls. Kalli and Mackie immediately jumped up and started dancing - on the beds, on the floor - and didn't stop till I made them come take a bath (bad timing on my part). Mackie, age four, even insisted on getting dressed up for the music and changed clothes three times. Now that's enthusiasm! Kalli, age seven, immediately announced that she would play it at her 8th birthday party.
I've never listened to scat in my life, and if you'd asked me a couple months ago if I liked it, I wouldn't know what to tell you. Now, however, I can say that we are a family of scat fans! "I like the doogedy doogedy doogedy part!" says Mackie. Despite the title, however, there's a whole lot more to this CD. How does yodeling grab you? (Kids love it!) Ever done a Pig Latin polka dance? (Kids love it!) What about big band swing? (Kids love it!) Get the idea?
Fink and Marxer are two-time Grammy Award winners, and the only children's recording artists to win the Grammy two years in a row. This CD is a playful mixture of tongue twisters and word games set to a fantastic variety of music. I asked Kalli which song was her favorite and why, and she chose "A-E-I-O and U" aka The Cow Song. It also happens to be the yodeling song (what did I tell you?). She pointed out the following lyrics about singing to cows to illustrate:
One day my sister decided to change
Our patterns and our emphasis
Expanding the range of our vowel exchange
With a yodel inspired by the Swiss
She especially loves that she has the words so she can sing along. And she just told me to add that "Fifty States" is her other favorite song. We're planning a roadtrip across the U.S. next year, and we'll definitely be taking this one with us on the road. Visit Cathy Marcy's website for extras including a recommended related reading list, a download of "The Limerick Song" that kids can sing their own limericks to, and a "Pirate's Mini-Dictionary" to go with the song "A Pirate's Life" (truly cute).--Melanie Wilson
