Great CD Anywhere, in the car, at work, at play, &while resting.......2007-02-19
HI: I just bought this CD and I really like it. It is a great CD for anytime. The songs are great and not old churchy. I like listening to this Cd during stressful periods in my days, and when I am exercising.
The songs are wonderfully written and the vocals to match them. The words really make you think about your soul and your choices in life.
I wish there were more songs on this CD. I want to hear the next compilation for MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST. I also bought the other CD for My Utmost for his highest and I really enjoyed both.
An overlooked masterpiece........2001-03-22
This CD was released 8 months after the huge success of the first My Utmost for His Highest project. Unfortunately, it failed to sell in the same numbers as the first. I will admit that at first, I didn't like it as much as the first. But it has grown on me, and now I like it more.
In my mind, one of the reasons it failed to sell in the same numbers as the first is that it doesn't have the name recognition the first did. While the first had Amy Grant, 4Him, Point of Grace, etc., this one has Anointed, Clay Crosse, Greg Long, and Lisa Bevill, among others. Michael W. Smith does make a return visit for two songs, the incredible SOMEDAY (SET THE CHILDREN FREE) and a recording with Anointed of JOYFUL, JOYFUL that's similar to Crown Him with Many Crowns from I'll Lead You Home.
Still, the reason this CD is so powerful is because of the overall theme and message of the songs. The idea was to release a collection around God's covenant with us and our response to it. When I really sat down and listened to the CD with that in mind, I was blown away. Some of the lyrics include: "I have made a promise/And so it will be...I belong to you/And you to Me." "I say it's a promise/A covenant, a destiny/I will come to set My children free." Susan Ashton contributes a beautiful version of Psalm 121 taken almost word for word from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible. By the time I reach the response to God, I find it easy to be praying "I promise all of my ways" and can claim the promise that "We will follow You, knowing You'll lead us through." The two instrumental songs, incorporating melodies from the other songs, add to the reflective mood.
This CD belongs in every Christian home. It is a great reminder of Who is ultimately in control of our lives and our world, and what He has promised to those who believe in Him.
Fantastic!.......2000-05-29
I loved this CD as much as the first one. If you have read Oswald Chamber's book, heard the first CD or are looking for an inspirational religious CD with music to please every taste, you have to buy this CD!
If you worship through music, It's a MUST!.......1999-10-02
A perfect sequal to "My Utmost For His Highest". You truly feel the Spirit! A wonderful mix of todays top gospel musicians. Contemporary mixed with traditional. Make sure you read the excerpts on the inside cover!
When I'm tired or low, this CD definitely lifts my spirit!.......1999-07-14
The technical mixing of the CD is top quality! We have a surround sound home theater system, and you can hear every instrument and voice distinctly. The separation is superb! The music is annointed and Jesus' presence enters as you praise Him and listen to this music. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone that wants to enter into God's presence.

This is a great album. When I was younger I had a copy of this and I have been searching for it. The songs are encouraging and will build your faith. Never Gonna Give Up was my favorite song. It's about friends that you hung out with before you knew Christ and they saw your life change but didn't make the same decision but that you will never stop praying and believing for them. It's just awesome.

Card's Treatment of Hebrews is Musically Creative and Biblically Rich .......2007-05-20
Why review an album that has been out for seven years? The same reason I would review a book that has been around for over 350 years (The Bruised Reed): quality is quality - and personally, I think this particular album deserves recognition regardless of its release date. Granted, the underlying reason might be that I have a difficult time remaining up-to-date and that I have a weak grasp of all the new music out there today (O the tyranny of staying current!) - but even if that is the case, I would rather be one who catches the pleasant midst of good music rather than trying to drink out of the fire hose of the contemporary scene. I guess I'm just not cool any more.
Michael Card has been around for a while. One of his first major hits you might remember was El Shaddai (no Amy Grant didn't write it - she only performed it). Between his most recent work, 'The Ultimate Collection' (2006) and his first, 'First Light' (1981), Card has completed nearly 30 albums, written numerous #1 hits, published and co-authored over 14 books, hosted two radio programs, and written for a wide range of magazines. All of this from a man whose aim in life, was to simply and quietly teach the Bible.
Soul Anchor was released in 2000 and followed in the pattern of many of his previous albums: it is a musical exposition (is that a phrase?) of the book of Hebrews. Many of Card's titles before this one, as well as the ones after, take as their lyrical base the text of Scripture. For example, between 1989 and 1992, Card would complete a three-disk set on the Old Testament: 'The Beginning,' 'The Way of Wisdom' and 'The Word: Recapturing the Imagination.' In 1997, Card would release 'Unveiled Hope,' which was a tour through the book of Revelation. Most recently, Card examined the life of Peter in 'A Fragile Stone.'
As I just mentioned, the book of Hebrews provides the lyrical foundation for 'Soul Anchor.' The title of the album is taken from Hebrews 6:19 where Christ referred to as the anchor of our souls. Card's ability to creatively form workable lyrical phrasing from the actual text of the Bible, plus his tremendous songwriting and musical ability (the man plays the guitar, the harp, the piano and who knows what else), make his songs both musically enjoyable and spiritually edifying.
Joining him on this album is Jars of Clay front man, Dan Haseltine and Christian female vocalist, Christine Dente. Dente couples with Card on the first song of the album, 'Violent Grace' and Hasetine brings a Jars of Clay sound to song number four, 'By Faith.' 'A New and Living Way' and 'He Was Heard' rejoices in the finality and supremacy of Christ's sacrifice and priesthood over the Old Testament sacrifices and priesthood. 'Never Will I Leave You' is taken from God's promise in Hebrews 13:5 while 'Fellow Prisoners' is an exhortation and rebuke to care and pray for Christians who are incarcerated for Christ's sake.
The album's title song, 'Soul Anchor,' is a jazzy celebration of our security in Christ despite great earthly termoil, and 'Seventh Sunrise' looks forward to the Christian's final Sabbath rest in the Kingdom. 'Pilgrims to the City of God,' taken from Hebrews 11:13, is sober yet refreshing glimpse at the reality of our residing in a country that is not our own, while seeking another City. The final piece of the album, 'Grace be with You All,' is a simple, piano and voice conclusion to the book, which takes as its text Hebrews 13:1, 8 and following.
This is a refreshing and encouraging album. I applaud Card for taking on the monumental task of making his way musically and theologically through the book of Hebrews, and I recommend his work to you.
Lesser Known Works of Michael Card.......2005-10-27
I have been a fan of Michael Card's music for well over a decade. This album is one of his lesser known works and was inspired by the book of Hebrews in the New Testament. The CD features ten songs. Musically I found that two songs appealed to me above the rest; "Pilgrims to the City of God" and "By Faith," never-the-less the rest of the songs had "real meat" in their messages. Two songs are duos, one a remake from a previously published song. There was scant information in the CD cover...neither lyrics or scripture references though perhaps there was originally (I bought from a reseller). I would recommend this to anyone familiar with and a fan of Michael Card's other albums, but would choose one of his more popular albums as a gift to those who may be hearing Michael's music for the first time. Michael Card is indeed a wonderfully gifted artist whose music has often nourished and helped anchor my soul. Enjoy!
he was heard...over and over and over again.......2003-02-25
This is undoubtedly one of Michael Card's very best compact discs. It abounds with eloquence of lyrics, the likes of which we, his fans, have not heard since POIEMA. If you've enjoyed Michael Card's past efforts, then you'll most likely be hooked by this one from the first few notes of the first song until the end of the CD.
The song "Violent Grace" places the sufficient grace of God (which He has lavished on us) in a whole new light. The song "He Was Heard" is an oldie which is also found on the CD KNOWN BY THE SCARS; but I personally recommend finding it on THE LIFE, which is Michael Card's trilogy of the Life of Christ--comprised of KNOWN BY THE SCARS, SCANDALON, and THE FINAL WORD--a magnificent collection of music. However, I'm still glad that Mr. Card saw fit to place that one in this fine collection of songs.
"Seventh Sunrise" has become one of my all-time favorite Card tunes (I never realized how much that sounds like "cartoons" until I typed it just now--man, was that cheesy!). It celebrates the beauty and anointing of the Sabbath. With that being the second to last song and "Grace Be With You All" being the very last song, this CD features one of the finest farewells any Christian musician has ever tacked on to the end of a CD.
This one is much better than UNVEILED HOPE and almost as good as POIEMA. But once again, I heartily recommend Michael Card's THE LIFE (as well as THE ANCIENT FAITH, his musical trilogy of the Old Testament). I look forward with eager anticipation to the soon-to-be-released A FRAGILE STONE, Michael Card's new project concerning the apostle Peter.
Beautiful variety, powerful lyrics!.......2002-07-30
Here is another triumphant album by my favorite musician! Michael Card spins the themes of the Book of Hebrews into strong lyrics sung within great, folk-styled music and little gospel too (the title track). In the first song, "A Violent Grace," (which shares the name of Michael's book on Hebrews) Michael approaches the crucifixion from a different angle, saying that Jesus' love for us is "ruthless" and "wreckless," paying a violent price for our relationship with God the Father. I love hearing Christine Dente's gorgeous voice (Out of the Grey) in this one. "By Faith" is an exciting version Hebrews 11 sung with Jars of Clay's Dan Haseltine, and by including Dente and Haseltine, the voices of my three favorite music groups have come together on a single album.
"Soul Anchor," with its gospel organ and choir, delivers ringing words of truth. "[Jesus] is a soul anchor. . . Before we call, he answers us with hope." Those words combined with some from "Never Will I Leave You," struck my heart one day at work; I walked out to the car to cry and repent. Of course, I highly recommend this album to all thinking Christians and eclectic music lovers.
A Superb Collection of Spiritual Music.......2002-01-26
I would have to label this album my favorite from Card's collection. The songs have such zeal and passion; each reaches into your soul and changes you in a way you might never have imagined. "Never Will I Leave You" is perhaps the most meaningful CCM song I have heard. With the promise that even when "you fear/the scars and tears," Jesus is there "with you through the storm," Card reminds us that we need never fear in God's loving arms. We are never abandoned. And Card challenges us in other songs to make that promise true for others -- to suffer and tend to the sick, the dying, the imprisoned, the anguished. "New and Living Way" is another exemplary track.
I also admire Card for striking out in new musical directions. He even includes a full-out gospel song that is unlike anything you've heard from Card before! You may not thoroughly enjoy it, but I think the breadth of songs conveys a larger message: that there is room under the "spiritual tent" for more than just one type of follower of Christ. All are welcome at the Lord's Table.
Take the challenge. Try this album. It will challenge you.

One of the most unmistakable voices in contemporary Christian music, Bryan Duncan spotlights his hottest singles from the '90s on this pleasing hits retrospective. Whether he's belting out a soaring chorus or reaching a deep groove in a soulful ballad, the smooth and classy cool that Duncan has exuded since his early days with the Sweet Comfort Band is all over this package. Five tracks from 1993's Mercy--winner of several CCM industry awards--suggest Duncan hit his peak years ago. Not true, as evidenced from the 1999 hit "Strollin' on the Water," a delirious song as free and spirit-filled as its title denotes. The one new studio track, "Love Takes Time," draws interest with production from Ted T., the man who gave Rebecca St. James her unique sound. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
Only Because of What Is NOT on the CD. . . ........2002-05-02
First of all, let me clarify my four-star rating: for what's on the CD, it is a five-star collection--not a bad song in the set (amazingly!!). However, having been a huge Bryan Duncan fan since MERCY and having all of his CDs from before that album, whoever makes the decisions could have included a couple of "older" songs to round it out. I'm not sure which I would have picked to leave off, but I would have come up with something (maybe "Things Are Gonna Change").
Another complaint: if you're going edit out half of "I'll Not Forget You," then don't tarnish the song by including just part of it. It is a great song and deserves to be included in its entirety. I admire their wish to maximize the disc space, but give us the whole song!!
Bonus points for including a couple of compilation songs, too: "A Heart Like Mine" (one of his best songs ever) and "One Voice," along with the marginally obscure "Bryan's Hymn" from QUIET PRAYERS (bonus points for that one!).
Six songs from MERCY (including the remixed "Love Takes Time"), three from SLOW REVIVAL, two from BLUE SKIES, one from THE LAST TIME I WAS HERE.
The two from ANONYMOUS CONFESSIONS were a big bonus, and both are great songs ("Love You With My Life" & "We All Need"). I would have complained if they had not included at least one of these songs. But they missed a couple from earlier albums: "A Child's Love," "Strong Medicine," and "Have Yourself Committed" should definitely be on there, and one could make a case for "Holy Rollin'" and a couple more.
Greatest Hits CDs are so hard to do. They are never going to completely please everybody, but they gave this one a good shot. Maybe they should have just included MERCY as a bonus CD, which would have cleared they way for six other tracks---a few earlier songs and a few more recent ones ("Glad Morning" from THE LAST TIME. . .). Maybe one disc just wasn't enough. . . . He's that good!!!
Totally uplifting!.......2001-01-24
When I lost my child, I was feeling really alone. The song 'I'll Not Forget You' totally lifted me spirits, and made me realize that I'm not the only one who had experienced a loss. Beautiful lyrics and music. If you have lost a child, this album is definetly for you.
So much soul-it touches my heart.......2000-07-16
I've been getting into a lot of alternative, r&b, and country artists who sing Christian music lately. I enjoy them all but sometimes forget how much I enjoy good clean Christian pop with slick soulfulness and smooth vocals. That's why I'm so glad I bought this CD. Bryan Duncan's music has really touched my life over the years though I never owned a CD of his till I bought "Love Takes Time". The song 'A Heart Like Mine' made me want to cry the first time I heard it; it is absolutely a beautiful song, and at the time I first heard it I was going through one of those days when I felt unworthy/unloved and then here's Bryan singing about God's amazing love for us no matter what we are like. I was bawling needless to say. 'You Don't Leave Me Lonely' has the same effect; like 'A Heart Like Mine', it is a gorgeous smooth production of a song. When you think about people you love who died or you lost contact with them, the lyrics of 'You Don't Leave Me Lonely' just lifts you up when you feel sad about how much you miss them. Those songs are my two favorite Duncan songs, but every other hit song from his past albums that has been collected here on "Love Takes Time" is wonderful. What makes Duncan's songs so powerful and touching to the heart is that he has a smooth polished voice without any scratchy or raw sound to it, yet it is still a powerful voice without any weakness even so. He combines the voice with the slick smooth soul sound of the music, and it just sounds so beautiful together that I feel like crying thinking about the awesome love of God and the beauty of Duncan's songs. Duncan's music is inspiring and life changing; "Love Takes Time" is definitely worth every penny you spend on it.
Bryan is great -- as always!.......2000-02-18
I just got this CD and it is so good! I've loved Bryan's voice since he was with Sweet Comfort Band -- it's such a distinctive voice, so smooth and rich. And his lyrics always speak to the deepest part of my heart. It's like I'm listening in to a private conversation between him and God. If you like Bryan Duncan, you'll love this CD!
I couldn't agree with you more, DarkAngel79!.......2000-02-08

Steve Taylor's controversial, out-of-print masterpiece, featuring "I Blew Up the Clinic Real Good" and "Since I Gave Up Hope I Feel a Lot Better." A Christian rock album even for those not necessarily interested in Christian rock.
Customer Reviews:
A masterpiece. .......2006-02-12
This album is the anecdote to smarmy, saccharine, overly sincere, self-important Christian music. I Predict 1990 is smart, funny, satiric, deadly serious, and intelligent: qualities often lacking in the music sold at your local Christian bookstore (right next to the "Jesus it the Real Thing" t-shirts). On "I Blew Up the Clinic," he even employs that most un-holy of literary devices (or so it would seem)--satire! Who would have thought that Christian music could be layered and sophisticated. How many other CCM bands mention Carl Jung, Svengali, and Jim Morrison?
Plus it rocks. Ripping sax solos, shouting vocals, and catchy-as-hell hooks all the way through.
When most other "gospel" music only focuses on one part of the Christian experience, Taylor dares to talk about it all. "Harder to Believe Than Not To" has been the theme song of my faith since 1990.
With this album (and Meltdown, On the Fritz, and I Want to Be a Clone), Taylor takes his place among the pantheon of Christian artists--like Terry Taylor, the 77s, the Choir, Adam Again, Scaterd Few, Daniel Amos, the Swirling Eddies, and the Lost Dogs--who don't suck.
Perfect album for the 2000s.......2005-01-23
I am NOT a Christian (a term I can't imagine Jesus approving); as a reverent agnostic, perhaps I delight in "I Predict 1990" because Steve Taylor's strikingly original, iconclastic faith that closely tracks Jesus's true message infuriates every phony, blowhard Christian I loan this remarkable album to. I was given this album by the Christian youth leader I worked with as a crew leader for the Youth Conservation Corps who thought (correctly) I'd be fascinated with Taylor's unique ode to Jim Morrison, and it is always at the top of my music stack. Those who are deeply dismayed by the ascent of the mammon-worshipping, warmongering Bush/Limbaugh/Ashcroft "Christians" on the right and the cynical do-nothing moralisms of the Left will find the cultural and political themes enthusiastically articulated by Taylor a true solace. Never straying one millimeter from the gospels, Taylor takes hard shots at abortion clinic bombers, wealthy CEO's, academic and psychiatric vanities, capital punishment, and the poseur coldness of this new age. Thank you Mindy, wherever you are, and Steve--surely you have something to predict about 2010?
Since I gave up Hope.......2004-06-30
This album is partly responsible for why I am still a christian, despite having gone to college.
The song "Since I gave up hope I feel a lot better" is a very amusing song. It made me laugh while I was in high school, but it also prepared me for college.
In college, they do their best to make you lose the values your parents taught you. Especially Christianity. They are very successful at this with a lot of unprepared college freshmen. But not with me. Why not? Partly because of that song.
I love almost every song on this album. I have lost this album, I lost it years ago. But I still remember a lot of the songs.

Meaningful and musical........2006-02-07
His two best albums, together on one nicely remastered CD. Sounds great with no background noise. Christian music recorded for a secular label (ABC) at a time when such things were largely unheard of. But he was professional and respected enough to pull it off. Featuring many great names of the LA studio scene of the '70s, like Larry Carlton, Dean Parks, David Hungate, Lee Ritenour, Ernie Watts, etc., etc. Polished and meaningful without beating you over the head. It was worth it to me to pay a premium for it after missing it when it was released.

Want something different? Try this!.......2005-03-12
I find it somewhat entertaining when my friends see the title "Triumphantine", they immedietly have to say it in an angelic, la-la type of tone, and when they see the title "100 Million Eyeballs", they immedietly have to say it in a grossed out, surprised type of tone. I said in a review of Miss Angie's debut, "100 Million Eyeballs"..."First of all, I will have to tell you this: don't judge people before you get to know them. Why do I say that? Because almost every person that stumbles across this album will think "What the heck is this? Miss Angie is bazzare." I know this sounds strange, but if you're in that situation, I highly recomend that you check this album out."
...So, you understand that, what I said about 100ME. If you hear the word "Triumphantine" and think it sounds like it would be a regular sounding album you'd be used to, think again. It's the other way around. 100ME has more of a alt/rock/pop sound, while "Triumphantine", well, has a genre that is a bit hard to explain. It's a wild mixture of haunting guitars, loud buzzing basses, techno-esque drum beats, sound loops that resemble toy instruments, and sweet vocals.
Well, I have to say that "Triumphantine" is not for everyone. If you're interested in it, I highly suggest that you listen to the audio samples through a few times, so you will know wheather you truely like it or not. The first time I listened to the samples, I thought "Triumphantine" had the weirdest music I had ever heard in my life, but somehow I thought after a while, "ok, I'll just try it once again, and see what I think this time". To my surprise, it didn't seem so bad the second time around, and the more I listened to it, the more I got used to it.
Not as good as 100 Million Eyeballs, but still awesome!.......2004-11-03
This album came right after Miss Angie's debut, 100 Million Eyeballs. It was pretty awesome! It was very different, though. When I first listened to it, it came off as kind of "creepy" to me, and I was thinking "100 Million Eyeballs has a more happy sound", which sounds very funny. I don't really think it's creepy anymore, it's just one of those albums I had to learn to like. Let me review my favorite songs from it:
Let's Get Together: Coolness! I'm not sure what it's about, but it's really cool! It's got an interesting sound. I like it a lot!
Dancing In My Head: Ok, this one comes off as a little, well, strange. But, I (very, very slowly) learned to like it. I don't really get it, but it's kind of cool! It's different and unique, like all Miss Angie stuff.
I Love Light: One of my favorites! It sounds kind of weird, in some places, but it's my style! It's really fun (for me) to sing. I like it!
ZZZZ: Weird title, I know, but one of the best songs on the album! It's got a great sound!
Doom: Ok, again, I'll have to say, "don't let the title fool you", but it's about something completely opposite of "doom". It's a slower song on the album, but it's really pretty! I like the drums in it. I, sometimes, sing it when I'm scared.
This album was very different, but very cool! Like I said, not as good as 100 Million Eyeballs, but still awesome. This turned out to be Miss Angie's last album, and after 1999, she kind of disappeared from the scene. There is absolutely NO info on what she's been up to the past 4 years. Not to be mean, but I just HATE it when artists do that. Aurora did the same thing. But I just have my little dream that someday, they'll make a huge comeback.
AWESOME!.......2002-06-02
This CD blew me away!! Her voice is so unique and unusual. I immediately loved track 5 and listen to it over and over. I love how she's not afraid to speak truth into her songs and speak of her love for Jesus with abandon. This is one very amazing album that everyone needs to at least hear once. Even if you don't keep it, at least listen to it so you can be more diverse and experienced in music. :)
Alternative rock at it's unusual best.......2001-12-16
Miss Angie's "Triumphantine" is one of music's most entertaining albums. It keeps you hooked all the way through. It has a combination of alternative guitar licks, some disco flavored rhythms and then to put a twist in it some star dusty ballads. The music is extremely well produced and unusually original.
Angie Turner has a remarkable voice which is both beautiful and aggressive. She is certainly a one of a kind.
rally rally awesome.......2000-11-13
This cd is really cool, i totally enjoy it. It reminds me a lot of the Cardigan's Gran Turismo. It's got an electronic sound, and miss angie has a beautiful voice. I would recommend it if you're looking for a mellow kinda cd. I dig it the most, and would recommend it if you like The Cardigans, Bis, and maybe even the sneaker pimps as a stretch.
