Story of Peter Pan [Box set]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Anglophiles and literary classicists rejoice! Stage and screen actor Sir Derek Jacobi lends his considerable charm to director-producer Jane McCulloch's thoroughly classy adaptation of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan and Wendy. There are no fancy tricks or gimmicks, just smart bits of orchestral music and Jacobi's proper yet playful telling of the growing boy who never grew up. As with the original volume, this version of Peter Pan fully captures the wonderment and infinite possibilities of childhood unfettered by grownup realities. It does, after all, take a childlike suspension of disbelief to really, really believe in fairies and never-never land, where loving mommies are the heart of magic and pirates, like fears, loom large yet conquerable. Divided into eight intensifying chapters, this nearly-two-hour narrative comes in nifty installments for several evenings' bedtime listening. --Paige La Grone

A great "first step" to the magic of "The Great White Way".......2006-11-26
With the Thanksgiving passing of songwriter Betty Comden, I recalled that I had, in my album collection, this album, not just featuring her songs but Comden singing on "Carried Away" and "Some Other Time" from the Tony-award-winning "New York." Two other songs from the play are featured, culled from a 1960 recording.
This compilation has some of the best of Broadway, not just the songs but the performers as well. Familiar names like Boris Karloff, the legendary Rosalind Russell, Nancy Walker, Chita Rivera, and Carol Lawrence are showcased in various selections from the likes of "Peter Pan," "Trouble in Tahiti," "Wonderful Town," "Candide," "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," and, in this writer's opinion, the best musical in the history of the stage, "West Side Story."
The liner notes provide brief but insightful descriptions of the various plays, including an introduction from Comden and her longtime collaborator Adolph Green, also heard on the album.
The music is definitely Bernstein with his uniquely American style, coupled with Old World influences.

Customer Reviews:
FROM A RAUCOUS ROAR to a wee whisper.......2005-09-15
We can all recognize the virtues of Derek Jacobi's acting -- in this reading of "Peter and Wendy", he does a great job on voices and inflection and timing. However, his volume varies horribly from one piece of dialogue or narration to the next. It's a shame that he wasn't properly coached on "radio speaking" before recording what would otherwise be a pleasing performance. Similarly, it's too bad that proper sound editing wasn't used to clean up the extreme variation.
Unfortunately, this flaw is fatal. Wherever you're listening to the recording, whether the car or the kitchen or at bedtime, you're bound to barely hear the whispers and to flinch at the shouts. Modulation on voice recordings is essential.
It's still a good performance and a good adaptation which leaves all the best bits in the story, thus the favorable star rating. Nevertheless, the recording is not worth purchasing for most listeners since better alternatives exist.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent Bernstein anthology with a few unusual choices.......2005-09-21
Bernstein basically spent half his recording life at Clumbia, now Sony, and the other half at DG. Although the composer's Columbia years produced his best work as conductor of his own music, DG has triumphed with a greatest hits'greatest bits anthology. Everything on here has been well chosen and paced in such a way that you can listen form beginning to end and feel that you've been enriched.
A good sampling of Bernstein.......1998-12-27
This 2 CD set includes a wide variety of Bernstein music, many or all taken from other CDs and put together for a Ballet Revue by John Neumeier. You will be taken from Maestro Bernstein's light-hearted work to the more serious compositions. Truly a "full Bernstein" collection although one could wish for something from Chichester Psalms. There are so many wonderful numbers included on this 2 CD set, that I would recommend it with one major caution. I felt that the rendition of "A Simple Song" by Cheryl Studer was abrasive and not at all like the beautiful song that it should be. Still, I had not heard Bernstein's "Anniversaries" (works for piano played by Sebastian Knauer, apparently written for various people... alas, the notes don't fill me in on these!) and they are little gems, the musical theater selections were pure Bernstein (and showed a bit of where Sondheim came from). Judy Blazer is a delight, Roberta Alexander sounds lovely, and Gidon Kremer, performing in the Serenade after Plato's Symposium was quite enjoyable. My only big disappointment aside from the Studer song is that there is no video (to my knowledge) of this dance performance.

Customer Reviews:
So many great songs.......2007-02-26
So many great songs almost lost. How is it possible that a Kander & Ebb song like Mr Ten Percent got cut? This CD is worth its cost for that one song alone, but this disc is chock full of great songs that didn't make it to opening night...
The Missing Songs from Some Major Musicals.......2003-12-02
This is the first of four CDs that contain recordings of songs that for one reason or another were cut from their shows. Highlights include:
From 110 DEGREES IN THE SHADE:
"Sweetriver" - replaced in the show by "Love Don't Look Away", parts of the melody appear in "Everything Beautiful Happens at Night".
"Flibbertigibbet" - became "Raunchy" in the musical. The music is pretty much the same, but the lyrics are a bit different.
From THE KING AND I:
"Waiting" - Anna sings her frustration of being kept waiting for weeks to see the King. This song was cut after the premier of the show in New Haven.
From FIDDLER ON THE ROOF:
"Dear, Sweet Sewing Machine" - A lullaby sung at the start of the second act by the tailor and Tzeitel. Cut because audiences in previews just didn't respond.
From WEST SIDE STORY:
"Like Everybody Else" - a short fugue for the delinquents A-Rab (the "Shrimp"), Baby John (the young one) and Anybodys (the girl) intended to lighten up the first act. This song was edged out by "Gee, Officer Krupke".
From PETER PAN:
"When I Went Home" - a ballad sung by Peter about the time he tried to go back to his old life, and found everyone had moved on. Seems to have been replaced by the lullaby "Distant Melody".
From ANNIE GET YOUR GUN:
Annie's song about keeping her ego in check when she sees herself on the larger-than-life poster advertising the show. Cut possibly because the melody was too challenging to sing.
Other tracks on this CD include songs cut from CHICAGO, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, PROMISES PROMISES, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, FIORELLO!, SILK STOCKINGS and THE HAPPY TIME.
If you enjoyed this CD, you must check out the other three in the series. Also, the same label, Varese Sarabande, has a series and a few composer albums of UNSUNG MUSICALS.
ONCE ON THIS ISLAND RULES.......2001-07-02
I'm not usually one to buy a CD for just one track...but in this case, I have to admit, that's precisely what I did. Anyone who has seen the musical, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND or had a chance to listen to its soundtrack will be won over. The idea that there were songs cut from this marvelous, "every song is a winner" album, was just impossible for me to resist. And WHEN DANIEL MARRIES in this CD does not disappoint. La Chanze's voice is absolutely marvelous. And the bonus? The other tracks are pleasing and fun for any Broadway buff: Liz Callaway's HONEY from Merrily We Roll Along is musically winning. I also liked the songs cut from GYPSY and FLOWER DRUM SONG. For an impulsive buy, I was completely rewarded. I have also ordered the other CD in the series for the ONCE ON THIS ISLAND song, DOWN FROM THE TREE...which also carries a Liz Callaway song. For musical enthusiasts, this series is a nice collector's item...and something to play on a rainy day.
The first in this great series.......2001-02-13
This CD is the first in a fine series of four releases consisting of songs cut from well-known musicals. Just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). The songs are all good, some better than others or course, and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Ten Percent" (cut from Chicago), "Come Down from the Tree" (Once on this Island), "An English Music Hall" (Mystery of Edwin Drood), and "Take it in your Stride" (Annie Get Your Gun). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This one's a great start and a fine addition to any show music collection.
Lost Songs From Musicals Are Fun To Hear!!.......2001-01-18
The "Lost In Boston" series, starting with this first disc, is a great set to have. There are some songs that are pretty apparent as to why they were cut from the show, but others that you might scratch your head about. Some great performers get the opportunity to record these hardly, if ever, heard before songs and preserve them on disc.
Of particular note on this particular disc are Lillias White singing "Come Down From The Tree" from "Once On This Island." This is a beautiful, beautiful song and while it may not have worked on stage, it works very well on CD.
From such classical musicals as "The King And I" comes "Waiting." This song, designed as a trio between the King, Anna, and the Krahalome is interesting to hear, but definitely is not on the same page as "Getting to Know You" or "Something Wonderful," both classic songs from the show.
Also of interest are the songs from "West Side Story," "Fiddler On The Roof," and what was almost the song that Annie Oakley sang in "Annie Get Your Gun" instead of "There's No Business Like Show Business."
This is a fun disc. It does have that overproduced sound that tends to be Bruce Kimmel's trademark, but it's still interesting to hear what almost made it in.
