The Kids Collection of Greatest Classics Volume 1

Editorial Reviews

Approach The Kids' Collection of Greatest Classics as if it's a handful of familiar themes cleverly framed for formal discussion. Kids over 3 will have likely already experienced (via cartoons, commercials, or elsewhere) Handel's "Water Music," Bizet's "Toreador Song," and Beethoven's "Ode to Joy"--but few will have not sorted out their significance or sophistication. The idea, then, is that repeated spins of these clipped and cheerful arrangements will steer them straight. Mozart--the hard stuff where masters are concerned, yet usually the main ingredient on collections like these--gets subbed for music that fans out in friendly, relatable directions. Debussy's "Clair de Lune" prances forward delicately on harp, Haydn's "Surprise Symphony" booms in on bass, and Brahms's "Hungarian Dance" imparts a cozy provincialism. Context is this disc's currency, and it's as subtle and smartly concocted as any classical starter kit you'll come across. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Creatively Classical!.......2002-07-31

the most familiar classical melodies, arranged in a child-friendly, palatable style using both folk and orchestral instruments; Listen to Strauss' Blue Danube Waltz and find the mandolin's participation; Enjoy Ravel's Bolero, with a panpipe and Bizet's Toreador Song with marimba. My kids are hooked and so am I!

5 out of 5 stars Fun and manageable classical music for kids!.......2002-04-30

This CD has a wonderful balance of classical pieces, all fun or bouncy or soothing (and short) enough to retain the interest of little ones. The music very beautifully done and arranged -- a great CD if you want to play classical music with your kids!
