We're On Our Way

Editorial Reviews
Parents Choice Vol. 17, No. 2
Teddy bears, tooth brushes, trips to the library- the subjects of these eleven original songs are long on child-appeal and near and dear to parents' hearts. A variety of styles keeps the album fresh and fun, from the 40's swing-band sound of Tiger with a Toothbrush, to a boogie-woogie Teddy Took a Train Ride, to a country western Truck Driver's Song. Several are truly inspired: Tina Took Her Tap Shoes manages to rhyme "soft shoe" with "tofu," while Partytime in the Mud could send young and old alike out to get down and dirty. A production for parents and children to listen and relate to with pleasure.

    4 out of 5 stars A GEM FROM THE PRINCESS THEATRE . . . .......2005-09-07

I agree with Mr. Behrens that this recording is a "must" for anyone serious about the American musical theatre, but I found the whole thing a trifle boring. (I would have given it 3 stars, but I was worried about turning people off.) The performances are splendid, and the original orchestrations for 10 pieces are a delight to hear. Upon hearing the overture, you might think you're listening to a superb digital restoration of an early 1900's recording. It's a gas.

Mr. Behrens states that the score contains neither a hit nor a miss and is an "improvement on the bubbleheaded competition," but the operettas of Sigmund Romberg, Rudolph Friml, Victor Herbert, et.al, were overflowing with far better songs than Jerome Kern would write for this or any other Princess Theatre Show. Many of the lyrics for "Eddie" are pretty inane, typical for the time, however. Kern wrote a much better score two years later for "Leave It to Jane" (1917), lyrics provided by long time collaborator P.G. Wodehouse. (A wonderful recording of the 1958 revival of "Jane" is available on AEI Records.) With Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, II, Jerome Kern wrote "Show Boat" in 1927, giving us the first truly great American musical. He also contributed some of Hollywood's most memorable songs, including "A Fine Romance," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "The Last Time I Saw Paris."

5 out of 5 stars A musical as it used to be.......1999-10-24

My fellow reviewer from Monterey Mass. hit the nail on the head. Though not as good as some of the "Princess Theater" shows to come ("Oh, Boy," "Oh, Lady, Lady," and the rest--this musical is quite an improvement on the bubbleheaded competition it had not only in its own time but long after it. It is also a relief from the "musical play" that replaced the musical comedy. Not a single hit song and not a single poor one in the whole show that was a pioneer of the great "integrated" shows to come, not the least of which would be Kern's own "Show Boat." This is a must for every serious collection of Broadway shows.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful version of a charming show.......1998-09-08

This is a 1915 show but it has more snap and charm than the current long melodramas that masquerade as entertainment

4 out of 5 stars Music for the baby!.......2006-10-14

I am the caregiver for my newborn grandson who is VERY VERY fussy. There are all kinds of CDs with soothing music for the babies, BUT I happened to hear that opera was a great listen for the little ears and this one is the best. It has high voices and very low bass voices lots of BOOMs and arias. When I first put it on for him, (in the middle of a loud cry), he quieted down almost as soon as the first stanza was over. He now smiles and waves his little arms and legs around when I turn it on. He Listens and loves this CD, and so do I! The words are hard to understand but the sounds are marvelous. If you know of any mother/father who is wanting music for a small baby/child, tell them about Gilbert and Sullivan (and they will enjoy it, too).

    1 out of 5 stars Unlistenable.......2005-11-11

The voices are wonderful, but the recording is so faulty that only the two tracks from Iolanthe sound at all okay. At first I thought it was my equipment, then realized that the CD was at fault. And I bought one for myself and one for a friend! I adore Gilbert & Sullivan and D'Oyly Carte is the best, but this particular CD shouldn't be offered for sale.

    5 out of 5 stars THIS is music . . ........2005-07-21

. . . not rap, not rock, not pop. Light opera! I love Arthur Sullivan's music, even though I'm 11, and I love this CD! The tunes are really catchy, and I'm usually singing one to myself. Not many people my age like light opera, but to me, it's the best music there is. Don't be afraid that you won't like this CD. You'll love it, even though it's hard to understand at sometimes. You might want to listen to some of the songs first to see if you like it. After all, not everyone likes opera.

5 out of 5 stars A Surefire Method of Loosing the Blues.......2000-03-03

This recording, done in a studio, allows the listener to "hear" all the words of all the patter songs. John Reed is just excellent as Koko, the Modern Major General, the Monarch of the Sea. Highlights come from Iolanthe, HMS Pinefore, Yeomen, Mikado, Gondoliers. A truly wonderful experience to be enjoyed over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Great for home and classroom.......1999-03-21

No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent ... but ..........2007-02-07

As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)

Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.

But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

From rolling in a stroller to traveling by train with a teddy bear, this new collection of the best traveling songs will keep you and your child in motion. This CD is a delightful collection of original songs about children reaching out into the world - doing things, going places, exploring, discovering, creating and growing. Whether you're in the car or in the living room, this is joyful entertainment for the whole family.

Explore the big wide world in song with this musical tribute to childhood and imagination. Take a trip to the library to meet story book friends, dance around the grocery store with Tina and her tap shoes, float to the park in a hot air balloon then bounce around the forest with a jolly bear named Freddy Fuzzywizz. Roll down the highway in an eighteen wheel truck then accompany a teddy bear on a trip from a factory to your birthday party. There are plenty of adventures right at home too. Swing on a swing, play in the mud or learn to brush your teeth with a good natured tiger. Lively rhythms and clever lyrics are presented in an entertaining variety of musical styles. A complete lyric booklet is included. Ages 3 - adult

          4 out of 5 stars Great album...but 35 dollars?.......2007-01-15

I've been loving this album for over 20 years, I have the vinyl recording and I've captured it digitally and gotten out the pops & crackles. I can't imagine why the CD version costs $35...but I gotta say it's probably worth it.
