5 out of 5 stars Two more collector's club releases.......2007-05-15

As with the Collectable Vol. 1, This is made up of two releases that were/are available through the band's website. These were originally done back when you had to have a membership in the King Crimson Collector's Club in which you paid in advance for a certain number of releases and then you had the option of picking which ones you wanted. The nice thing about them being released this way is the fact that now you know before you get them what they sound like thanks to the rating on the back.

The first show here from the Moles Club in Bath is from an audience tape and that might be offputing to some. However, being someone familiar trading concert tapes over the years(IE Grateful Dead, King Crimson, and so on)I don't think the sound on here is that bad. The band was still calling itself Discipline at the time and that's what you get. Early versions of what would become the Discipline album with the first live Red and a cool Larks part 2. The performances are a little rough due to the fact that this is this lineup's first performance.

The second performance on here from Philadelphia was taken and mixed from the band's own multi track recording(8 tracks) tapes. You get different versions of the material on disc one plus four songs from the Beat album. Given the fact that this performance was professionally recorded, I doubt many people will have a problem with the sound quality as it's superb.

The short, all the performances are very good to excellent and the sound for the most part is top notch.

4 out of 5 stars First live show Crimson played and one of the best "Beat" performances--mixed sound quality on one, excellent on 2nd.......2007-04-26

This two CD set documents two pivotal concerts by the 80's line up. The first concert features the band when they were still known as Discipline (before Fripp realized that this could a viable new version of Crimson)appearing at Moles a small concert club in Bath, England. The band performs material that would form the basis for their first album and recorded much of it getting out to hone their chops live. The performance sounds fair--it is drawn from a restored audio cassette so is presented in mono with limited fidelity. It still is worthwhile for some of the stunning, loose performances here. This is before the songs had been honed to perfection by constant live playing. It features the bulk of "Discipline" as well as two 70's era Crimson compositions "Red" (which would become a staple of this line up)and "Larks Tongues in Aspic: Part II".

The second disc is from one of the band's best performances during their 1982 tour (although I prefer their last show in Berekley for personal reasons--I was there). Capturing the band at peak intensity, Belew is on fire during this performance and the rest of the band follows him down that hot trail. Featuring "The Howler" (a song that would later be sadly retired from many live shows), the bulk of the second 80's Crimson album "Beat" and once again "Red" & "Lark's Tongues in Aspic", this was one of the four pieces best captured performances. Recorded on 8 track the sound quality varies from extremely good to excellent as it was pulled from the band's recordings and sounds much as the show would have sounded live. My only complaint about the second concert is that Tony Levin's bass is occasionally buried in the mix but otherwise the sound is exceptional.

Crimson biographer/blogger Sid Smith provides separate liner notes (as he did for the individual releases)for both in the booklet and they are excellent. I didn't realize that Smith never caught the 80's version of KC live (at the time he preferred the last incarnation with John Wetton, Fripp, Brufford and Cross)but he does confess that he didn't get into them until after they had split up again.

An excellent release and an essential purchase for Crimheads just be aware that the Moles show isn't perfect before buying. It's worth having because the performances are terrific. 4 stars for the Moles performance 2 stars for the recording; 5 stars for the Philly show and 4 stars for the recording.

5 out of 5 stars Very good recopilation of fantastic music.......2007-01-05

In this second set of King Crimson guides there is music of the 1981-2003 period. There are two studio CD's plenty of the music of this period. Though it is not advertised anywhere, the studio CD's are HDCD encoded and they have fantastic sound. The two other CD's are a collection of live recordings of these period. In this case they are not HDCD encoded, but they also sound very good. If you want an introduction to the KC music of this period, this collection is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-06-12

I stopped paying attention after "Thrak", so discs three and four were a complete surprise -- some of KC's strongest work ever. The live performances are especially powerful. I bought this for nostalgia reasons (best of the 80s) and discovered a vital band making intense, uncompromising music. Passion, precision, total confidence ... this set renewed my interest in Crimson.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars just isn't enough.......2005-10-25

The reality is that Fripp, Bruford, Belew and Levin, the core of this box set (yes, I know Bruford and Levin left at one point) have had more to do with the advance of Music, especially in this avant-garde direction, than any four fellows since, well.... maybe since a quartet from northern England a few decades ago.
In any case, what's on offer, even if you have most (and you wouldn't have all) of the tunes on these discs, is a chronology of the dangerous life in the Court of the Crimson King. The thrills are so heady, the puzzlers are so confounding, that you'll enjoy the assembly here so much that you'll feel like you are re-discovering these songs. I love every bloody second of this set! Jayzuz! It gits me, down deep. The perils in negotiating "Fractured" justify the price all in itself. The live sets showcase what I've always held about Crim: they are always and ever a live and living enterprise that thrives on the notion that failure and bloodshed are imminent. But what is clear is that they are also the spiritual parents of Steve Wilson and his Porcupine Tree colleagues, as well as Erki Sven Tuur in the classical world, and the California Guitar Trio, Nguyen Le and his colleagues in France. In short, where Music itself goes to consider its coming into the world, there you will find the King and his Prime Minister working out how to bring Music into a world that strives so hard to keep it out.
In a few days' time, Fripp will be releasing LOVE CAN NOT BEAR, his Soundscapes from the World Financial Center. Like John Adams' ON THE TRANSMIGRATION OF SOULS, it will have a profound impact on how we regard the tragedies that befall us and what Music can do to carry us through those times. Along with this intrepid account of the history of a group of men, some with facial hair and glasses, you will have before you poetry on which to dwell through the course of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Words mean nothing here........2006-04-13

Simply put, there is not, nor will there ever be, anything quite like this band.

What amazes me most is, at the level these musicians seem to be, both individually and collectively, how they don't waste a note wanking their egos on this entire album.

For this type of music (which is pretty scant), I'm torn between this one, Don Cab's What Burns Never Returns, and Battles' B EP. This one is the most raw and primal of the three, which gives it a little edge.

Watch for Don Caballero's (reunion) album, World Class Listening Problem, on May 16.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly crazed instrumental prog.......2005-10-14

How to describe Don Caballero's sound? There isn't much like it to provide a frame of reference, so it's not easy. Well, here goes: throw the sounds of Helmet, Mogwai, Slint, Drive Like Jehu, Sonic Youth, The Mars Volta, and Shellac into a blender, remove all vocals, add a mad genius of a drummer who sounds sort of like Elvin Jones (of John Coltrane fame) on methamphetamines, and you'll get a fair idea. With 2, the virtuosos of Don Cab created a monster of an album, one that bends minds as easily as it bends genres with its highly distinctive blend of fusion, metal, and prog. The compositions ("songs" doesn't quite feel like the right word, thanks) here veer between extended, multi-faceted epics that straddle the ten-minute mark and shorter, sharper pieces, but no matter the track length 2 showcases some dazzlingly complex structures that never fail to make heads spin with their consistent unpredictability.

Now, before I go any further, I should stress that whatever else it may be, 2 is not an exercise in gratuitious technical wankery a la the more grandiose moments in Dream Theather's catalogue. And despite the band's all-instrumental approach, this in no way falls into the post-rock category that's become so fashionable of late; the sheer intensity of this recording would be more than sufficient to blast the likes of Explosions in the Sky into submission (not to say EITS aren't a good band; they very much are). At all points, 2 is a focused, aggressive, and measured display of technical wizardry that's at least as much about creativity as virtuosity. If your brain isn't engaged while listening to this stuff, you might've hit the "off" button on it by mistake.

Of course, given their prodigious chops, the guys in Don Cab could be forgiven if they decided to show off a little. I've listened to tons of music from various genres, and these guys can easily hang with any band I've ever heard when it comes to musical skeelz. Drummer Damon Che gets a great deal of the attention when Don Cab is discussed, and rightfully so: he sounds like two drummers most of the time, with a jazzy, impossibly fluid style that keeps the proceedings interesting even during the rare calmer moments. With Che going wild on his kit, the task of supplying the groove falls largely to bassist Matt Jencik, but he's more than up to it, his crackling basslines expertly poking through the tiny spaces left in the mix by the insanity going on around him. Then there's the guitar duo of Ian Williams and Mike Banfield, who are, simply put, amazing. The intricate, interlocking patterns these guys create are like no other, more than justifying the "math rock" label that's so liberally applied to the band's work.

While there aren't really any leads per se on 2, they would probably end up feeling gratuitous anyway, as every band member practically seems to be soloing at once anyway. As such, it can take a while to decipher the reams of complexity present on this album, but it's definitely worth the effort. Opener Stupid Puma starts the album off with a barrage of screeches and skronks from Williams and Banfield and some caffeinated drumbeats from Che, nicely prepping the listener for what's coming next. P,P,P, antless is pure insanity, with Che relentlessly assaulting his kit behind the pounding metallic riffage of the guitars. Repeat Defender could best be labeled as futuristic space rock from hell, featuring an interplay among the four musicians that could only be described as telepathic. Imbued early on with a righteous, swinging rhythm, Dick Suffers Is Furious With You briefly flirts with catchiness before descending into the sort of shrieking math that's more prevalent on the album. Shifting tempos, moods, and pretty much everything else every ten seconds or so, Rollerblade Success Story boasts the kind of rampaging time-signature manipulation that should have fans of Meshuggah and the Dillinger Escape Plan drooling. The band shows a pretty nifty aptitude for dynamics as well: just check out the way they adulterate their assaultive sensory overload with some pleasantly melodic moments in please tokio, please THIS IS TOKIO and extended passages of droning repetition in No One Gives A Hoot About FAUX-ASS Nonsense.

For the serious music fan, 2 is one of those albums that can easily become an obsession, eliciting listen after listen in an effort to unravel its myriad intricacies and eccentricities. That, ultimately, is the main source of this album's appeal: it sounds great at first, but each revisiting brings to light some new detail and putting it all together becomes a mission in and of itself. If you've got a high-tech stereo and some good headphones, 2 can help you kill many unproductive hours. It certainly works for blasting out lingering memories of the bland crap that dominates the radio.

5 out of 5 stars math on speed.......2005-10-06

For those John Nash out there (think of it as you listen to music with his mind) it's like when your Ph.D. teacher explains the E=mc^2 and you think of it as 2+2=4 back during grade school.

It's called math rock.

It redefines minimalism. It allows you to experience a complex ballad of drums and guitars all while maintaining an overall simple taste. It reminds me a lot like a good muscat. You have to really be of a certain breed to appreciate what makes it so god damn special.

Enough of all the burn all your idols speak..

I got turned on to D.C. prior to Singles Breaking up. It was an epiphany of music to me. I never felt so relaxed. Why do they give low-quality speed to kids who are already bumped up enough with ADD/ADHD? Well... I don't know. To me, this is the adderall of music. It just makes sense.

You need to appreciate four guys who if they can get more than a scream onto a record, is considerable when it comes to lyrics. Time changes come fast and hard. It's like being involved in real combat with full metal jackets. Blink for too long and you missed the time change.

I've played this for some folks and very few appreciated it. Most call it noise. But what some called junk was really art that now sits in the Guggenheim or has a price tag of more than an overpriced MLB player does in a year.

5 out of 5 stars My god this stuff is incredible!!!.......2005-04-22

I am a huge fan of unorthodox music, expecially the music that is so tight and precise that it blows your mind. All I have to say about this album (and really this band in general) is JESUS CHRIST!!! Never have I heard such precision, even though and first listen it is total noise. Listen more, you will unlock so much s*** it is ridiculous. AMAZING ALBUM, easily in my top 5 all time.

4 out of 5 stars certainly an earful.......2004-08-04

i got this because i remember all my buddies from athens loved these guys, and had played me songs on occasion because i was the resident drummer and this is the resident favorite band of indie rock drummers. why? because damon che, drummer and band leader, is a crazed lunatic with mad skills and forearms the size of florida and the yucatan peninsula, respectively. it's all hardcore-ish math/art/experimental/prog rock. basically. all you need to know is that it's a bunch of noise with some absolutely phenomenal drumming thrown in.

4 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet.......2005-11-14

This is a re-release with two extra songs Low Shoulder and Kachina which can also be found on the Emblems Corners album. The original release had the first four songs on it only and its great, but over before you know it. If you are new to Traindodge this might not be the best place to start, but if you are familiar with their other works such as The Truth and On A Lake of Dead Trees then you'll probably enjoy this album more. The first song Raining Room is just a beast. The drums are crazy fast and make you get into the groove of the song right from the get go. The other stand out track is the 11 minute epic Cactus Flag. It starts out slow and mellow and builds to this huge wall of sound around 6 minutes in and makes you want to hit back and do it all over. You get a nice sampling of what Traindodge is all about on this release. You've got the rocking numbers, a slower track, and a crazy instrumental that will knock your socks off. If you are wanting to get more Traindodge releases by all means pick it up you'll enjoy it. They're out touring all the time so go check 'em out as well.
