You Don't Know My Mind (1956-1966)
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Whereas Bill Monroe alumni Flatt & Scruggs refined and polished the master's lonesome sound, Jimmy Martin, another Blue Grass Boys veteran, made it even rawer, edgier, and more vigorous. Martin's biting, back-of-the-throat lead vocals stand as some of the genre's most remarkable, and his Sunny Mountain Boys gave the music a propulsive rhythmic drive, spearheaded by Martin's own guitar rhythms and dynamic runs. This collection gathers 14 out-and-out classics from Martin's 1956-66 peak Decca period and features the vital contributions of Paul Williams (mandolin, tenor vocals) and young sensation J.D. Crowe (banjo, baritone vocals). --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Guy In Concert.......2005-02-18
I just caught Guy in concert last night in Tampa Florida. Very talented, entertaining and relaxed on stage. He has acted in theater, TV and film. He played six and twelve string, banjo and harmonica along with his down to earth singing and story telling. Catch him if you can.
FiLL
His Best Yet.......2000-03-01
Of all the delta blues traditionalists who have appeared lately, Guy Davis may be the best. And this album is my favorite--so far--from this very talented performer. Good as his playing and singing are, I think it's worth pointing out his great skill as a songwriter, too, penning tunes that sound a lot older than they are. He's a gem.
Hat trick!.......1998-07-15
This is the third of three strong releases. Guy Davis is here to stay--in his hands Delta Blues will continue to be a living creative musical genre--not a museum piece to be experienced only though decrepit recordings. He and Corey Harris now co-own this genre, at least from the male perspective.
the robert johnson of the 90's.......1998-07-11
If your a blues fan and not familiar with Guy Davis, shame on you !!! "You don't know my mind" is Davis' third CD and once again showcases Davis' ability as a musician and songwriter. Davis is a fabulous storyteller with his music and deserves to be among the elite blues songwriters. His style is traditional Delta blues complete with acoustic guitar, harmonica, and a gravely voice. Davis is authentic, and commands respect from both fans and peers alike. The title song is possibly the best track on the CD. The line "if you hear me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying" conveys how we all must feel on the worst dog days. "Po' Boy," "Home cooked meal," and "Best I can" are the other highlights. Although his previous CD "Call down the thunder" is a little stronger from top to bottom, "You don't know my mind" is still marvelous entertainment from a very talented blues artist who should keep fans satisfied for many years to come.

Revelation--Greater Promises Up The Road.......2001-02-22
It does not take long to learn the mind and artistry of Banu Gibson after hearing her most recent CD, "You Do Not Know What's on My Mind." My favorite piece is "Truckin". Banu is so much in control of this piece that it leaves the listener with the revelation, that this lady is trucking to higher ground. What is most revealing to me, is that there is a bright future for Banu, along life's creative highways. I predict that in a few years, if she and her musicians continue at the same rate, Banu will surpass her credentials as a regional artist to nationwide, and with a little more acceleration, international acclaim.

Customer Reviews:
Great stuff, but several gems missing........2001-05-26
This is a nice collection of Jimmy Martin material from the "golden era" when he had J.D. Crowe on banjo and Paul Williams on mandolin. The playing is supercharged and the vocals are high and tight. The usual favorites are here, but one of the best cuts on the CD is the remake of the Monroe Brothers' classic "What Would You Give in Exchange?" Conspicuously absent from this CD are "Freeborn Man" and "The Grand Ole Opry Song." Luckily, those are available on the "King of Bluegrass" CD, but there's alot of overlap between the two disks. Great music by a clever and talented performer.
this is bluegrass.......1999-12-10
For those who like real bluegrass, this is in the same league as Bill Monroe and The Stanley Brothers. "Ocean of Diamonds" with its imagery is worth the price of the CD -- the rest is gravy. Good gravy like my Granddad used to make. Fans of the Del McCoury Band will enjoy this. In fact, fans of Mike Ness, Johnny Cash and anybody with a little sand in their craw will like this.

Robert Johnson's equal!.......2005-05-19
I brought this CD in a Half Price Book store in the cutout bin and it's one of my favorite Country Blues CD.In my opinion, these recording, also done in the 30's,are every bit as good as Robert Johnson's recordings ,but different because Leadbelly's style leans more towards the older Songster Tradition that predates Country Blues. A classic Country Blues collection!

These are all great songs but I don't think the best singers were chosen to represent them. But they are all wonderful and enjoyable tracks taken right off the cast album of each of their shows.
