Album Description

Pianist Lara Downes takes us on a journey through the heart and soul of the USA with American Ballads, as she interprets 20th century works by Barber, Copland, Ives, Thompson and features the world premiere recording of jazz composer/saxophonist Benny Golson's On Gossamer Wings.This collection of solo pieces reflects the influence of popular music on our master composers and captures the essence of the American spirit, brilliantly performed by one of today's remarkable talents.

Lara Downes has attracted attention as one of the most exciting and communicative pianists of today's younger generation. She has been cited by critics for her breathtaking virtuosity and penetrating, sensitive accounts of classical and romantic repertoire. She has been hailed as an artist worthy of placement in the highest rank of classical performers. Since making noteworthy debuts at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, Ms. Downes performs regularly throughout Europe and the United States.

Ms. Downes eclectic and engaging programs encompass both the standard repertoire and works by young composers such as Augusta Read Thomas and Stephen Paulus. Her recent projects include a Copland Centennial recital, a recently discovered piano concerto by Clara Schumann, and a four-part recital series entitled This American Century. She recently made the world premiere recording of On Gossamer Wings by legendary jazz composer Benny Golson for the Arkadia/Postcards label.

The eldest of the three musical daughters of a civil-rights attorney mother and a Jamaican biochemist father, Ms. Downes began her piano studies at age five at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. At seven, she composed an opera based on the book Charlotte's Web, which was performed in San Francisco. Home-schooled through high school, Ms. Downes completed her advanced studies under Hans Graf at the Vienna Hochschule and with Rudolf Buchbinder at the Music Academy in Basel. She has received highest honors in the Claude Kahn, Palma d'Oro and Artists International competitions.

Ms. Downes' busy solo and chamber career is strongly impacted by her commitment to expanding and developing new audiences for the arts. She dedicates time during her concert tours to elementary school workshops, and has developed a wide network of community outreach through the University of California at Davis. She is the co-founder and artistic director of Arts Exchange, a project dedicated to building creative partnerships between the visual and performing arts. In her own words: "I'd like to re-define the concert experience, to give it new relevance in our 21st-century world".

Ms. Downes speaks fluent English, Italian, German and French. She lives in Northern California.

American Beauty.......2001-07-26

OK, I admit it! I picked up this CD because of the great-looking Ralph Lauren-esque cover art. Lara is gorgeous and not your typical classical pianist. But then I listened to the recording and discovered that she's REALLY not your typical classical pianist! A feisty, swinging musician with a mind of her own, she brings a brand new sound to these terrific American classics. I can't recommend this enough.

As a piano fan and record collector, I always look for new concepts and presentations. This is a marvelous collection of seldom-heard works that deserve more attention. Miss Downes is a big talent. Bravo!

A Superb Live Recording.......2004-09-30

This is one of my favorite live albums I've ever heard. Steve Taylor does not tend to disappoint, and "Liver" is certainly no exception. It would be difficult to exaggerate the impact that Mr. Taylor has had on the Christian music world in his career. There are many popular bands to day that would not be, could not be, without his groundbreaking music and lyrics paving the way.

This record contains many of Mr. Taylor's hits performed live, and a number of his later career songs from the album "Squint" (as this was the Squint National Tour, after all). Album highlights are numerous: "Jim Morrison's Grave" and "Lament of Desmond R.G. Underwood-Frederick IV" are great rock songs to start the record out with. Following that, Mr. Taylor announces that they will be doing some cover tunes, the first from an album entitled "I Predict a Clone" (which was a tribute album consisting of songs originally performed by Steve Taylor) and the second from a band whose name he couldn't pronounce, which would be Chagall Guevera (which was a band that Mr. Taylor played in for a brief period to release one amazing record). The first "cover song" is one of the disappointments on the album. "I Want to be a Clone" is one of the earliest, signature tunes that Mr. Taylor was ever known for. It's classic. And here it gets a rude, very quick screaming-lyrics treatment.

The rest of the album is simply excellent, however. The all-out rock treatment of old favorite "On the Fritz" works extremely well; so well, in fact, that a rare-for-a-live-track concept video was made for the song. "Jesus is for Losers" and "Finish Line" portray some of the best of the "Squint" record, and the latter especially is really exceptional. Finally, the record ends with another song by Chagall Guevera, a high energy rocker called "Violent Blue."

All in all, this is a great record. On the back of the album, Mr. Taylor promises that this is a *real* live rock album, mistakes and all. It may not be polished, but it doesn't need to be. The excitement even continues on the album after the concert is over: the audience is cheering for an encore, and Mr. Taylor is about to do one when a fire alarm goes off, and he goes from singing to direct the crowd to the nearest exits.

Just how many live albums would include something like that?

The next best thing to a Live Steve Taylor concert.......2003-03-23

While it's really a shame to have to listen to Steve Taylor without also getting to watch him on stage - this albumn is about as close as you can come to the live Steve Taylor experience without Steve blessing us with a DVD (we can only dream).

Since Steve is harder to catch these days in any concernt venue - no doubt to his continued hard work producing and writing for some of today's top groups including Sixpence None the Richer Guardian, and The Newsboys.

I had the good fortune to actually here this tour when it came through Texas and this is albumn is the next best thing to being there again.

If you don't have any other ST albumns though - don't stop here. While the earlier stuff is harder to find - it's worth hunting down and really helps you appreciate this almbun all the more.

Very good recording of very unique pieces........2004-06-15

This is a superb recording of seven piano pieces and one piano and violin piece from the somewhat rare composer, Roy Harris. Harris's music in this recording is very indicative of his very Western heritage. It is this property that has made these pieces great compositions to play and hear.

The music presented on this album is of very good quality, not only in composition, but in performance. Richard Zimdars gives a virtuosic performance of Harris's greatest piano pieces. My personal favourite track on this CD is the Toccata. This album is worth buying just for that piece. Harris was always able to create a very specific mood in each of his pieces, and when I listen to his music, I am enveloped by a powerful sense of whatever mood the piece is sending, be it an ecstatic insouciance or a somnolent moment.

bad, very bad.......2007-04-07

Now let me just mention i love the dead boys, and i love every band Stiv has been in. but this cd is just plain bad. the audio of the audience is the same thing looped over and over again and sometimes during solos the sound of the audience over powers the sound of the guitar. thats pretty much what killed it for me. other than the audience i can deal with the quality, but i havent listened to this since the first time i bought it and i really never want to listen to it. stick with the studio stuff in my opinion.

Dead Boys - 'Liver Than You'll Ever Be' (Pilot).......2004-12-15

About as good as their 'Night Of The Living Dead Boys' live release(see my review).'Liver...' was recorded at the Ritz in New York City on December 26,1987 on a brief reunion tour,I assume.Can see that vocalist Stiv Bator(R.I.P.)produced the record.As for live albums go,the sound is a bit rough but I doubt many fans would be disappointed with the mix of this CD.Tunes I liked hearing the most were "I Wanna Be A Dead Boy","Ain't Nothin' To Do",the slamming "Son Of Sam",their Stooges cover "Search And Destroy",their Stones cover "Tell Me" and "3rd Generation Nation".The line-up here is:Bator-vocals,Cheetah Chrome-guitar,Jimmy Zero-rhythm guitar and Johnny Blitz-drums.What,no bass player?Sort of found it amusing toward the end of the set,when a couple of the band members were telling one another off SINCE this was the final gig of the tour anyway.Great all-American punk.

Good music, but horribly recorded...........2003-05-05

I like the Dead Boys music - alot... I realize that this music is not meant to be recorded clean... The grittier the better in my opinion... This is a band that usually sounds better live than recorded...

But.... This live album was really horribly recorded... It sounds as if it was recorded behind a loud fan (the cooling one, not someone who likes the band).. The sound cuts in and out very quickly (talk into a fan, and it sounds like what comes out the other end)

Also, their was large feedback "shrieks" that really should have been minimized in the editing room...

As much as I like their music, i had to turn this one off within 3 songs...
