Great Job Randy Travis.......2007-04-11
I really like Randy Travis is neat see Country Artist going the Christian way an seeing it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good plain gospel album.......2007-01-09
Actually, this is more modern than most of the gospel music that I have. I suppose it's not as grandiose as a lot of gospel albums by Nashville artists but I don't think that's a bad thing. I'm not up on contemporary gospel music but the arrangements of the old familiar ones on this are great.
I love that this album isn't as "polished" (as some of the reviews have said) as a lot of other country gospel albums. I wouldn't even say it's less polished, though. It's much less egotistical than most; one gets the impression that Travis was more about the songs than about trying to make it all about himself and how-original-can-I-be? That said, the arrangements are clean and straightforward (there's a great guitar break on "I'll Fly Away") without being boring. Great listening and great for singing along.
Front porch music!.......2006-09-22
You don't have to be particularly religious to enjoy this cd. Down-home comfort music just doesn't come any better. I'd start namin' off favorites, but nearly every song is a potential earworm.
Great bluegrass touch, masterful delivery!.......2006-01-24
Oh, how perfect could it be! This Randy Travis worship album is perfect all the way around. Not only does it present excellent bluegrass arrangments (this music is REAL- you can even hear the picks stricking the strings of the instruments!), but Randy's sweet, emotional voice makes all of these old songs a brand new experience.
Highlights of the album include gentle renditions of old favorites, like "How Great Thou Art" and "Softly and Tenderly". The two songs are favorites of the common singer to overdramatize. But Randy brings to them the deep emotion that makes his voice a once in a generation phenomenon. Randy also stirs the heart with passion filled worship songs. I have never cared for praise and worship music, especially when I heard singers like Michael W. Smith scratching them out line by repetitious line. But Randy brought to these songs a true sense of worship. With his own unique style he transformed songs I had never cared for into beautiful songs of praise to the Lord. My favorites are "I Will Give You All My Worhsip" and "Crucified".
You will enjoy this album, and his new "Glory Train" is a nice accompaniment. This album has a bluegrass flavor, while "Glory Train" adds spirituals, jazz, and many other styles. They both are unqiue and enjoyable. They are also all REAL music- nothing on the two albums is electronic- a lost art for today's "singers".

No one is perfect, but.....................2005-09-04
this album comes close. I gave it five stars for many reasons, even though I think he should have left a couple of songs out (But, that may just be me), and included others better suited to him. But, that's true of most artist's albums. How many times is there a 20-song album that is perfect on every song? I would think "never", and that is true of this album also. I've seen many other lesser albums rated 5 stars, even with one or two mediocre songs, but this album one has 20 songs on it. How much more do you expect for your money, Elvis singing a duet with Jesus? O.K. maybe that isn't funny, but you get the point.
What I did like about the album is that Randy has taken some very old Christian music (notice, I didn't say "gospel" because a lot of it isn't, or wasn't, "Gospel" originally), and gave it a comtemporary style. If someone doesn't like this album I suggest they either don't like Randy Travis, or don't like gospel music, or don't like either. Unless you are an atheist or agnostic, or something else other than a Christian, you should enjoy this album immensely. Buy it now.

I need say no more.
If you havn't heard him then this is a good place to start.
Somewhat relaxing but mostly monotonous and dreary.......2007-03-31
I am new to Krishna Das. I first remember hearing a song by him on a chill out compilation a few years ago. What stood out for me was his deep, rich voice. I recently found a copy of his "Door of Faith" cd at my local library and thought it would be a good introduction to his music. For the most part I found "Door of Faith" to be very relaxing to listen to especially on a rainy Saturday morning with a steaming cup of coffee. My favorite track on the cd has to be "Sita's Prayer/Hey Mata Durga". Unfortunately this cd gets awfully monotonous because of Krishna's vocals within half way through the cd. It doesn't help that some of the songs are over several minutes long. The music is beautiful and I do like Krishna's deep, sensuous vocals but I think the cd would have been even better had the songs been edited.
Chanting for mind, body and soul.......2007-01-11
I've listened to Krishna Das in reverse order (from most recent recordings to this one). His voice is amazing, the chanting so soothing. One of my favorites.
Ever-New Bliss.......2006-07-29
There are many adjectives the might describe this CD - warm, soothing, inspiring, simple, complex, gentle, comforting, melodic - but they would simply demonstrate that music, and this music in particular, is beyond words. It is balm to the soul and body.
Compelling; Heartful; Genuine.......2005-07-24
I consider myself a novice when it comes to Sanskrit Mantra, chanting, and the legends of Hindu Deities. All I can offer is the personal experience of listening to Krishna Das and his chanting. It is subtle, compelling, provoking, emotive, truthful, devoted, and inspiring. I purchased this CD on the blind, having never listened to any of the songs on it before, not knowing about the Shiva Stuti or Hanuman Chaleesa. I was just getting used to Krishna Das's Hits of the Kali Yuga when being fortunate enough to attend a Kirtan, "Door of Faith" was there too.
I've listened to these chants almost daily for the last few months, and its not like conventional songs where they become repetitive - these songs, using words of power, just keep building the internal vibration of love and compassion.
You don't have to be a Hindu, or practice Yoga, or even know Sanskrit words (the CD comes with a FULL listing of the words plus background notes) to get benefit from these songs. My kids automatically chant along now and miss it when its not being played.
Yes - it does pull at the heart, and yes - from time to time it does instill tears. If you want something groovy and light - this is not for you. But if you want something deep and resonant, powerfully drawing you into Love, then this Bhakti Yoga CD (devotion) is 62 minutes of pure bliss.
You don't have to spend thousands of dollars going to India to get the real thing. Just light some incense, a candle or two, grab a cushion, some hankerchiefs, and open your heart. Can't wait for Krishna Das's next compilation.

somewhat of a let-down.......2007-05-23
The love most people are showing for this album is probably a result of when they were introduced to Judas Priest. Screaming For Vengeance was a big album for them and a lot of new fans came on board. However, as a fan from about the time of Hell Bent For Leather I found it somewhat of a let-down. I appreciate that rather then sell out after Screaming they decided to continue to rock out. The sell out, of course was Turbo.
There are only two great songs here. Freewheel Burning and Love Bites. Most are down a notch from the earlier songs they try to recreate, like Jawbreaker and the silly Heavy Duty/Defenders of The Faith. The Sentinel is okay, but over-rated and I like Eat Me Alive and Some Heads Are Gonna Roll to a certain degree.
Also, the production is too wet. There is a pervasive wall of reverb that makes the over-all sound somewhat indistinct rather than crystal clear and focused. This production really hinders Night Comes Down and Rock Hard, Ride Free which have the potential to be good songs.
As I said (and you can probably tell by this review), I was a little let down by this album. They were losing the edge somewhat and it was obvious the ground-breaking days of British Steel were in the past. If anyone is new to Priest and is looking for their strongest work, that's the place to start. Also, the new Essential Judas Priest is a pretty good over-view.
Their Final Masterpiece.......2007-04-19
I will admit that Screaming is probably the best JP album, but Defenders is my favorite. So many great songs, Freewill Burning, Jawbreaker, Eat Me Alive, etc.. I mean, every single song is a hit. In that sense it seems like Defenders was crafted more to have a greater mass appeal than their previous stuff. The legendary guitar work is there, the presence of Rob Halford dominates as usual. Simply put, a classical album from a legendary band.
Not their best,but OK.......2007-03-13
When this album was released in March 1984,I was not that wild about it then and not today either. It was a bit of a disappointment when compared to the previous album,Screaming for Vengeance which some Priest fans consider to be their best work.Defenders of the Faith along with Accept's Balls to the Wall and the Scorpion's Love at First Sting were I think three of the most overrated metal albums of 1984.
Defenders of the Faith was the first of two mid 80's Priest albums where the band took a more commercial approach as if they were trying to sound like Twisted Sister. The songwriting, for the most part was pretty lame but there are a couple of good ones."Freewheel Burning" sounded good along with"Love Bites".The songs on this album just didn't have a natural feel to them like they did on previous albums not to mention the overproduced sound. The guitar tracks sounded pre-processed from a cookie cutter and the drumming was a bit weak as well.Rob Halford's vocals were great and the album cover is fantastic which is the high point of the album.
My main complaint is that the songs on this album sort of sounded like a rough blueprint for Turbo which was the next album. The chorus lines sounded slightly cheesy and somewhat anthematic. It was as if Judas Priest was trying its hardest to get their music on MTV and FM radio which they did,but more in a way in which they were trying to appeal to a more mass, mainstream rock audience, not just the metal crowd.
Only Priest fans who are completists and have to have this for collection purposes need to buy this.Otherwise if you want true musical quality,I would suggest other albums instead of these mid 80's "experimental" albums.Judas Priest albums from the late 70's,early 80's and even the early 90's are better than this.
Defenders Of Heavy Metal! Indeed!!!!!!.......2007-02-14
This album would have been the second best Judas Priest album(Possibly on The 10 Best Metal Albums Of All-Time list),if it weren't for some of the cheesefests on it.I don't really care for Heavy Duty/Defenders Of The Faith. This is what brought it really down on the list of the best metal albums of all-time.If you compare this album to Powerslave(Iron Maiden),through the first six or seven songs it is right up there with it(That Says Alot!!!!!).If this album only had the songs Freewheel Burning,Jawbreaker,Rock Hard Ride Free,The Sentinel,Some Heads Are Gonna Roll,Night Comes Down, and even the ballad from the remasters Turn On Your Light, this would be on the top 5 Metal Albums Of All-Time list.It would be like this: 1.Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son,2.Powerslave,3.Somewhere In Time,4.Sad Wings Of Destiny,5.Defenders Of The Faith.Tipton and Downing lay down some of the best solos from Judas Priest on this album, also who can forget Rob's performance on this one,he sounds menacing.Good Album though.
Defenders Of Heavy Metal.......2006-11-28
Defenders is often said to be one of the best Priest albums, And their right. From the adrenaline rush of Freewheel Burning, To religious chanting of "Defenders Of The Faith" This album will not disappoint EVER.
Probably the best song writing of Rob Halford's Career was put into The Sentinel, And the emotional stage favorite Night Comes Down are only a few of the Gems in this album. This album is worth buying for Rock Hard Ride Free alone! (My Favorite Judas Priest Song...)

Album Description
Originally a Goth-flavored post-punk outfit, the Cure evolved into one of the truly seminal bands of the '80s, and ultimately one of modern rock's most celebrated and influential acts. Guided by creative visionary Robert Smith, the Cure's signature sound balances a dreamy pop savvy with a dark, brooding majesty and fuses superbly crafted, literate songs with a feverish emotional intensity. The band's early catalog-newly remastered and expanded wtih a wealth of rarities-is a series of masterpieces that laid the groundwork for their phenomenal and enduring popularity.
Customer Reviews:
Sinking Deeper Into The Abyss . . ........2006-11-20
Much darker and gloomier than its predecessor SEVENTEEN SECONDS, FAITH is typically one of the most beloved Cure albums by fans who get into their brand of "depression rock" (and I would be one of them). "Haunting" is a rather overused term, but many songs on this record definitely fit that description, especially the trippy "Other Voices," the gorgeous "The Drowning Man" and the doom and gloom title track masterpiece. The only track I really don't care for is "Primary," the album's only single. It's mood doesn't fit in well with the other songs and, to me, it sounds too much like a conventional rock song, and the Cure are capable of so much more than that. If the "Charlotte Sometimes" single had taken its place, FAITH would be perfect.
Overall, FAITH sounds like a bleak testament of spiritual desolation. For Cure leader and lyricist Robert Smith, the comfort of religion crumbles away in the face of this harsh life, leaving him with "nothing left but faith." The period during which FAITH was made was one of the darkest in Smith's life. According to the accompanying liner notes, Smith came to realize around this time that he in fact did not have faith in a "personal entity."
Added to the end of Disk 1 is the rare "Carnage Visors" (which I used to have on tape, a special release with FAITH on one side and "Carnage Visors" on the other), a dark, droning, nearly 30 minute long instrumental. It's bleak atmosphere provides a useful backdrop for chilling out. For me, it has a calming effect.
Disk 2 -
The bonus CD is chock full of interesting rarities, fun to explore for the dedicated fan but inessential for the casual fan, save for the mind-blowing "Forever." My impressions of Disk 2:
"Faith" (Robert Smith home demo) - spare but interesting demo of "Faith," just Smith on guitar playing along to a drum machine.
"Doubt" (Robert Smith home demo) - another home demo sketch, this one is much different than the heavy-rocking final version. Slow and meandering, it's only about 1 minute long.
"Drowning" (group home demo) - this unused song sketch is desolate and ominous.
"Holy Hour" (group home demo) - this is a great demo, totally warped with trippy atmospherics that didn't appear on the final version. The bass guitar sounds like it's totally overloading an amplifier.
"Primary" (studio out-take) - quite different than the final released version, this take is really spacey.
"Violin Song" and "A Normal Story" are, unfortunately, unremarkable sketches for unfinished songs, never used. (studio out-takes)
"All Cats Are Grey" (live) - the drums sound is absolutely amazing, but I'm pretty sure Lol Tolhurst is playing along to a pre-recorded drum track. Still, Tolhurst was a pretty creative if quite limited drummer who doesn't get as much credit as he might deserve. He could definitely keep a beat. Overall, this is a great version of "All Cats Are Grey" with Robert on synth.
"The Funeral Party" (live) - a good version of this mellow, depressing dirge.
"Other Voices" (live) - excellent version
"The Drowning Man" (live) - beautiful, very cool version that employs some elements not found on the studio version, in particular, strange intermittant "whirlwind" sounds.
"Faith" (live) - this greatly extended version of "Faith" is solid but not legendary like certain bootlegs (still floating around I would imagine), and it can't top the original studio version.
"Forever" (live) - this nearly 10 minute long non-album epic proves the Cure could get VERY heavy when they wanted to. Builds to an ecstatic climax comparable to "The End" by the Doors, but even better. The crowning jewel of Disk 2.
"Charlotte Sometimes" - the lush, moody original single.
I know FAITH is the favorite Cure album of a few certain fans, although it's not their strongest one in my view. But as a die-hard fan, I can't rate this release less than 5 stars, especially considering the inclusion of "Forever." Like every release in this series of remastered Cure albums with bonus rarities disks, the packaging is excellent with a very informative essay and rare photos, including an ultra-rare shot of Robert Smith with a big grin on his face.
Lugubriously Brilliant.......2006-08-25
The deluxe version of Faith is so tenebrous you just might want to jump off a cliff after listening to it. Just kidding!
Actually, the songs are catchy throughout both discs. And that is the brillance of the Cure. Robert Smith can lay out the most depressing sounds ever found in a stuido and make them worth hearing.
And this version is a treat for the discerning fan. The production is elegant. The extra songs are beyond expectation. And, of course, Robert Smith is at or near his creative peak.
Highly recommended.
Take Out the Out-takes.......2006-07-25
The Cure's 'Faith' has never sounded better with the arrival of this excellent remastered edition. Every song on disc one (the original album) is memorable, making it arguably the band's best of this era -- From the rapid rumble of 'Primary' to the more somber moments like 'All Cats Are Grey' and 'The Funeral Party'.
The second disc, like most in the deluxe-edition series, contains mostly studio out-takes and bonus tracks. This era of The Cure was minimal to begin with, and the out-takes are just painful to listen to. There is one great bonus track included on disc two: 'Charlotte Sometimes'. I would have much preferred the option to purchase a single disc containing the original album along with the studio bonus tracks.
Questioning the new "Faith" .......2006-01-06
Although heavy in topic the music of FAITH is marked with a sad beauty. Icy synth sounds feature heavily throughout and, combined with the machine-like pulse of Lol Tolhurst's drum kit, gives the music a fragile feel. Echo and reverb are treated on instruments and voices alike that linger over the music of FAITH like a heavy fog.
"All Cats Are Grey" is lyrically sparse, yet conveys greater emotion through it's lengthy instrumental passages. The superb "Other Voices" has a great bass riff (courtesy of Simon Gallup) and opens with one of Robert Smith's memorable anguished howls. Two of FAITH's songs disrupt the dark tranquility of the album with surprising jolts (one being the propulsive tempo of "A Primary" and the other the jarringly violent "Doubt"). "The Holy Hour" and "Faith" are also standouts.
FAITH is a four-star recording, but the latest repackaging of this fine album adds a bonus disc of largely forgettable material, and for this I feel I must subtract a star from the overall rating. Because B-side material from the Cure's singles was relegated to the Join the Dots box set, that leaves out-takes (mostly uninteresting instrumentals), demo material (murkily recorded, skeletal versions of FAITH tracks), and live performances to fill the bonus CD. Still, there are a few treasures to be found here. The early version of "A Primary" that is revealed here is practically a new song in itself. The A-Side single "Charlotte Sometimes" is awkwardly tacked on at the very end, but is a welcome addition nonetheless. And immerse yourself in the extended live version of "Faith" if you want the lingering feeling of gloom to last a little longer.
If the bonus disc did not add to the sticker price of the final product then I wouldn't raise much fuss. I have nothing but praise for the Rhino label and the packaging for the Cure reissues is very impressive (lyrics, liner notes, and lots of photos including Robert Smith entering his trademark wild-hair and make-up persona). This reissue nicely summarizes the look and sound of this early period in the Cure's history. More surprises were yet to come.
Still Holding Up.......2005-11-06
While `Seventeen Seconds' was dark, `Faith' is pitch black. `Seventeen Seconds' may have been sullen, but `Faith' is downright bleak. For all of that, it's also a slightly better album than its predecessor. Singer/songwriter Robert Smith was getting very good at expressing depression, even when it was painfully over wrought (I'm sorry, but every time I hear him singing about `crying at the funeral party', I have a perverse desire to laugh out loud). `Faith' was the perfect record to play if you felt incapable of crying but wanted to experience your depression anyway. It offers eight dirges, each one capturing a different nuance of catatonic pain. The naïve but appealing simplicity of "Boys Don't Cry" (their first album) is further expanded on here, but with some subtle and yet very significant changes. Words are boiled down to almost nothing, while the music provides atmospherics that fill in the moody blanks. For effect, somebody spent a hundred bucks on a flanger pedal, and quite obviously must have liked it, since it appears on virtually every song here, along with tons of echo and reverb.
For all of the atmospherics, though, the real mood setter is Robert Smith's voice; never in the history of recorded music has someone sounded so distracted, doleful, and depressed. He makes late-era Billy Holiday sound like Mary Poppins. I could be judgmental and claim that the album contains only eight songs due to a lack of songwriting ideas, but I think it is more due to the fact that they simply could not bring themselves to edit the chord progressions. Many songs build for over two minutes before vocals enter, but this only adds to the hypnotic appeal of the depressing themes. This utterly simple (or mind-numbingly redundant) game plan results in a record that is, for better or worse, extremely consistent in content, and in mood.
The extra disk (and extra track on disk one) is even creepier - and somehow even simpler in structure - than the main album. The audio quality for some of it sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom...underwater. Most tunes consist of a few repetitive, hypnotic chords, making time slow down like some musical version of Einstein's theory of relativity. "Carnage Visors" does this for thirty full minutes, with no vocal.
The fact is, you already know if you like the Cure or not. "Faith" captures them at a point in time when they completely abandon commercial acceptance and leap headlong into cult status. If you'd like to know where stylized gloom developed, then you've come to the right place. B Tom Ryan

This is why the cure will always be known as one of the only 'Goth" bands that really matter. Forget The Sisters of Mercy. Infact forget everything that you ever thought was termed "Goth" . Listen to the opening lines of the title track and you will be blown away with imagery that would make the most jaded of nihilists think that they should lighten up.
Faith-A Hauntingly Beautiful Record.......2006-04-16
Faith, As I see it, is the point where "goth" rock lost all of its Violence and Raw agression,(I.E Joy Division, Bauhaus, etc.) and became something of a more, well, lyrically stimulating and Musically haunting genre. The Cure had progressed from post-punk masters to Goth Rock visionaries, and the visions represented here, as mentioned in the title of the record, are of the abscence, or loss of faith. I've always interpreted the record as Robert Smith's search for something to believe in, A faith in something that can comfort him, but to no avail. Stunning in it's sheer simplicity Musically, but ability to be as dense as they would ever be (Disintegration, Wish, etc.). The opening track, "The Holy Hour" is one of disturbing qualities lyrically; "I live/ A vow of Silence/ As one by one the People Slip away", and lets you know that the direction of the record will be just as bleak and depressing as their follow up, "pornograughy." The second track, "Primary", is as poppy as the band would get on this record, and by the time it shifts into "other voices" all aspects of this Pop-oreintation are lost completely. Heavily Reverbarated more and more as the record progresses, "all Cats Are Gray" takes the desolation to a point where their is some sense of hope, but those thoughts are lost upon the opening of "Funeral Party". Now, Funeral party can be looked at from many different perspectives, but in my perspective, it is simply Loss. Loss of a family member, A Lover, anything like that. It is my favorite Cure song in it's Beauty, and in it's lush, lush sadness. The Cure wouldn't attain these values of Ache-ing sadness again until Disintegration. We then have "doubt", the fast-paced tale of Love gone wrong, and then the listener is dropped into the winter-laiden depression of "The Drowning Man." Another beautiful track, it contains disturbing imagery much like "one Hundred Years", and, although deceptively misleading, it had potential to reach even more disturbing heights than the work of pornograughy had. Finally, "faith" arises from the ashes of "The Drowning man", and by doing so, ends the album on the lowest note possible. Despite what many Cure Fans think, Particularly that "Pornograughy" is the bands best album, I Declare "Faith" not only my favorite, but their best, Not only Lyrically, But Musically as well. It may not have had Chart Topping material, and the Catchiness that "Kiss Me" and "Disintigration would have, but in it's doom-laiden Dispondency, it retains some of the most dark, gloomiest, and, (Yes) beautiful music ever captured on Recording.
Highly Recomended, but not for first time listeners of the Cure.
Faith, Seventeen Seconds and Pornography are the REAL Trilogy.......2005-11-05
Faith, Seventeen Seconds and Pornography were - by far- the best Cure albums, although the ones proceeding them were very good too.
Why Robert Smith has seen fit to high-light some of his lesser works, lump them together with Porography and call them a "Trilogy", I just can not understand.
Good goth/rock album .......2005-10-19
Like most The Cure albums, this is a good gothic rock album. Most The Cure albums I rank 3 stars, but Pornography is definitely 5 stars. The distance between this album and its follow-up is hundreds of miles, Pornography was once in a lifetime. Faith has a far less heavy sound, more laidback and mellow. Some good songs are Funeral Party and All Cats Are Grey, though no song really sucks or really stands out. All in all a "pleasant" album, I listen to it regularly. Just doesn't grab me as deep as I am sure it does many other people. Good album though.
Robert Smith's Descent Into Doubt And Despair.......2005-09-12
With this album, The Cure completed its evolution from Punk-ish, dance club music, to somber, headphones-on, mood music. This is seminal Goth, where it began, as Robert Smith disdained all things radio-friendly, alienated his record label, and burned bridges with his first producer (Mike Hedges), in pursuit of a musical expression of his mid-20s angst. Angst is an overused word, but it aptly describes the anxiety and anguish of music exploring failed relationships, religious doubt, and a personal crisis fueled by too much booze and drugs.
"Primary" and "Other Voices" were the single releases off the record, and better heard in the context of this album than as part of any Cure compilations you might already own. I have no idea what the song is about, but "All Cats Are Grey" is Robert Smith at his plaintive best. The title track is a masterpiece of irony and despair.
You don't pop in this CD on a first date. Just like The Cure's magnum opus "Disintegration," play this CD when you want to wallow in remorse, doubt and pain. Next to Disintegration, this is The Cure's moodiest, and therefore most Cure-like, album. You may justifiably like the tunes on "Head in the Door" or "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" more, but no recording is more quintessentially The Cure than Faith.
Finally, kudos to Rhino records for yet another great re-release, more than justifying buying this album again if you already own it. The liner notes from Robert Smith are worth the price, Robert Smith's home demos are amazing insights into The Cure's creative process, you can almost feel this band unraveling in the live bonus tracks, and you get the "Charlotte Sometimes" single just in case you don't already own it elsewhere.

Album Description
Originally a goth-flavored post-punk outfit, The Cure evolved into one of the truly seminal bands of the '80s, and ultimately one of modern rock's most celebrated and influential acts. Guided by creative visionary Robert Smith, The Cure's signature sound balances dreamy pop savvy and poetic lyricism with a dark, brooding intensity. The band's first four groundbreaking albums-newly remastered-are a series of masterpieces that laid the groundwork for their phenomenal and enduring popularity. Fusing superbly crafted songs with charged emotional depth from the very beginning, The Cure's early catalogue, as upgraded by Rhino, is ready to be revisted.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-03-05
Ireland, the Island of Saints and Scholars, has been a beacon of the Christian faith for many centuries. As a predominantly Catholic country, it fully embraced the trappings of the universal Church and made them their own. Devotions to the saints and to the Virgin Mary as well as to the Sacred Heart of Jesus resulted in the composition of many hymns dedicated to these personages. Moreover, because of such worship practises as Novenas, 40 hours devotions and Benediction, some of the greatest church music was written at the height of the Romantic Period.
This disc is an excellent representation of song material for worship that covers many of the above-mentioned ceremonies.
Although many of the hymns on this album are Irish in origin, others were adopted from countries, such as 'Holy God, we praise Thy name' (Germany)-'The Bells of the Angelus' (France). and 'Faith of our Fathers' (England).
Upon first hearing this disc, I found that I was quite familiar with many of the songs though they were not included in my formal religious upbringing, no doubt because they are not strictly Catholic!
The performance of the 2 soloists is absolutely beautiful!!!!Frank Patterson (tenor) sings with a deep resonant and vibrant voice with appropriate reverence. Regina Nathan (soprano) has a clear and seemingly effortless sound with flawless diction.
This is a really outstanding recording of interesting and varied hymns.
Inspired & Deeply Moving!.......1999-04-08
I cannot adequately express the feelings that this recording left me with. I was quite literally in tears - of warm reflection and joy. I have not been so moved since.... I can't remember. I can only surmise that this is an inspired and inspiring recording. I can't wait to hear part 2.
Beautiful.......1999-01-10
This CD is smashing and is very solemn, although I'm not Irish it is well sung.
If you want to hear the Catholic hymns you grew up with.......1999-01-02
If you want a wonderful rendition of the songs you learned at your mother's knee, or at Sister Mary Brigid's knee more likely, this is the tape for you! Perfect for Catholics who want to refresh their own memory of traditional Catholic music, or who want to introduce their own children to hymns they love. This album is perfect also for the Music minister looking for a classical musician's interpretation of best loved traditional hymns to round out a collection of music for Worship Services.
While the hymns are pre-Vatican II, and a few probably pre-Tridentine, the presentation and musical excellence make for easy and nostalgic listening.
Excellent! Our children can not get enough of it........1998-11-16
Finally a CD with traditional Catholic hymns! Our girls (age 6 and 4)enjoy singing along with these excellent voices (so do we).

A MEDITATION ON 911.......2005-02-08
There are two different schools of thought concerning "sacred" music. There are probably more than two schools; but there are only two in active play. It all comes down to just what "sacred music" is for. The first school regards sacred music as being a language and interaction primarily between the believing worshiper and the "Lord of Heaven". It is not that God "needs" praise and adoration, so the thinking goes; instead in worship, singing and prayer God gives Himself to His worshipers. In other words, what appears to be "sacrifice" given to God is actually the reverse. Particularly with music, it is sometimes said that singing is "prayer made twice". In this light, sacred music is pretty much a "within the family" affair. Only indirectly is sacred music meant to appeal and attract those outside the fold. While history abounds in numerous examples of the "lost" first being drawn into a life of faith as they observed Christian worship, the primary purpose of sacred music is found between Creator and communicant.
The second school of thought mirrors the first in most respects. Everything said about God, music and worshiper largely holds up. But while the first school directs its focus to the act of worship, the second school also believes sacred music should have an intentional evangelizing purpose. The "worship nexus" between God and believer must be taken care of. But conscious and overt appeals to those outside the faith should be given equal if not primary preference. Particularly in America and especially among "Evangelicals" extraordinary attempts are made to draw in un-churched contemporaries with music thought to be attractive to them. "After all, if you want to catch fish you got to have the right bait."
In practice, especially to an outsider, the two schools of thought seem to turn out very similar "product". Both schools can use contemporary musical styles. The difference is whereas the "evangelical" model (second school) will use contemporary music to appeal to unbelievers, the "divine dialogue" model (first school) will use modern forms as a means of self-expression and (in no small part) to be "user friendly". The differences between the two, however, become more obvious (sometimes painfully so) with use. The question one always has to ask is "to whom am I singing to here?" There are instances when you realize that there have been services in which the Divine Creator has not been addressed at all; instead the whole service has been one big "public testimony" to the outside world.
All the long-winded discussion above goes toward why John Tesh both succeeds and fails with A DEEPER FAITH. If his ultimate aim is conversation between supplicant and Lord, Tesh's project is a remarkable success. Whether you like his music or not, one cannot deny that John Tesh is a skilled musician. With this CD, he brings his skills and bag of tricks to make a durable project that both praises the Savior and instructs the faithful. Strictly speaking, this is not music for a formal Sunday morning. worship service. Music such as found on this CD is too "labor intensive" for all but the largest of congregations. In most churches, these performances would overwhelm the sanctuary and crowd everything else out. But there is another legitimate purpose. Most Christians feel a need to live out their faith outside of Sunday morning-outside of church. Thus there is a place for Christian hymnody created specifically for non-church use. There is some merit in the old notion that "faith follows in doing". Staying "plugged in" to the life of faith often involves daily Scripture, daily devotions, singing and listening to edifying songs. "Open The Eyes Of My Heart", "You're Worthy Of My Praise", and "I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever" are quite good and can "stand alone" by themselves. In listening to the album, however, it becomes clear that a different kind of statement is being made than just having a collection of tunes. By the end, it becomes obvious that Tesh is trying to come to terms with the crimes of 911 in the context of faith.
911 is an extreme case of a troubling question asked of the Christian faith everyday. That loved ones can leave home to go to work and never come back is a prospect that faces us all each morning. When it actually happens to you or someone near you (a surprising number of Americans were either related to or knew someone in the twin towers or the pentagon), there is an urge to "make sense of it all". Christianity offers few answers and even those are at best suggestive. Instead, almost all Christian ministers and theologians point to an all-knowing and all-powerful God whose purposes is beyond knowing, the hope in His mercy, and the promise beyond death. As with most things, this "pointing" can be done poorly or it can be done well. Tesh for the most part simply alludes to this appeal to trust artistically. If you are familiar with "Christian shorthand" (a compact phase or set of words which stands in for a deeper, more detailed discussion for the thought at hand) all this is clear. Such is the life of faith that most of us have to hear the proclamation over and over again. And when tragedy actually strikes us we must hear the proclamation all afresh.
The problem is that outside the faith none of this makes sense. It is in the outward evangelizing that this CD ultimately fails. What is a sincere effort to communicate comes across as a confusing mesh of uplifting songs, Scripture quotations, and a ponderous ending. Then there is continuing frustrating behavior on the part of Evangelicals in which they prattle on about the need to reach out to the un-churched in the idiom and music of the day and then absolutely refusing to use the actual contemporary idiom and music when they make the attempt. For all his talent, John Tesh is simply too mild and "white bread" compared to what is popular. Whether rock or hip-hop, Tesh is not going to appeal to fans of Coldplay or Contraband-nor will he be mistaken for Black Eyed Peas or Eminem. Moreover, in much of modern popular music, there is an element of "darkness" and resigned grimness that most take to be part of the foundation of any "true" art missing here. Part of this is because Evangelicals see this "dark element" as antithetical to the very message they are trying to convey. Part of it also that many in the Church believe the "world" is attracted to messages of "sunshine and peaches". Whatever is actually in his thinking, John Tesh simply lacks gravity to the very people he is trying to reach.
Of course, it could well be that Tesh's intended audience is within the Church and only incidentally those outside. If that is true, then it would be unfair to say he is failing in something he wasn't trying to do to begin with. If Tesh is providing "songs for worship", then he has succeeded and then some. The Christian message cannot be reduced to "sunshine and peaches" but there is ample room for songs of joyous praise, thanksgiving and instruction. John Tesh won't rank up there with Bach or Wesley but he is head and shoulders above much of "Christian music" being made today.
an inspiration to us all..........2004-05-31
This is such a wonderful cd, and perfect for those moments you need just to relax and meditate. A great soft, quiet, inspirational cd.
Don't get left out.......2003-02-10
I was never really a John Tesh fan because I was never really a fan of Entertainment Tonight. However, I seemingly foolishly suggested to my wife that I might, may or think that I was interested ... remotely ... in the Tesh toon "Open the Eyes of my Heart" and she bought the CD for me. What a powerful CD! I recommend it to everyone ... DO NOT GET LEFT OUT OF THIS EXPERIENCE!
Pleasant music.......2002-11-18
This CD is enjoyable. There are parts that aren't as pleasing to the ear as I had hoped, but over all I enjoy the music.
i love it.......2002-05-07
I recently bought the Deeper Faith CD and I love it. it truly was amazing and Thanks for making a great worship CD. I also look forward to listening to you on the radio every Sunday.
Thanks again and God bless you and the work you do!

Soul Majesty.......2006-11-12
Allen Tousaint is one of those figures in the world of Soul and Funk who never had a career in the full spotlight. He rather chose to be behind the curtain writing and producing. In doing so Toussaint was a major force behind the development of the Crescent City Sound in the sixties. Although he had something of a solo career in that decade he didn't get it properly started until the seventies. "Life, Love and Faith" followed the beautiful "From a Whisper to a Scream", both being Toussaint's first proper album efforts. Releases before that were aimed at the 45 market as most of the R&B material of the sixties. It wasn't until people like Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes and Stevie Wonder started to produce records that were meant for the album market that hit big R&B would be taken serious as an album producing field.
Where From a Whisper still leaned heavily into material he originally written for others, Life, Love and Faith would be Toussaint's first album that stood on its own. Instead of producing for the Meters, the legendary funk band became his backing group on this outing adding a horn section. As many of his contemporaries Toussaint moved away from safe grounds. The album dealt with adult themes. Relational song gained depth and Toussaint asserted himself politically.
Although Life, Love and Faith is on par with the better work of mentioned album artists in the R&B field he never got the commercial recognition those artists got, his biggest successes remained productions for others. Listening to the record now it is a mystery. Life, Love and Faith contains solid song writing, moving, catching and still relevant. The music is funky, light and breezy yet manages to grab your attention, keep you focussed. It is music in service of the song yet exhilarating.
In recent years Toussaint has gotten some more recognition for his role in the development of R&B peaking for now with his collaboration with Elvis Costello. Their album features one of the key songs on Life, Love and Faith, Going Down. Anyone who enjoyed that album will certainly enjoy this album; anyone who loves classic Soul will love it. This is pure Soul Majesty.

I own most of Rev. John P. Kee's cd's and this is beyond a doubt a glorious sampling. John has such an anointing for creating songs that glorify God as well as touch our hearts. They are uplifing as well as thought prevoking. I have had this one for several years and am still stirred by songs like "My mind is made up" and "Wave your Troubles Away".
