4 out of 5 stars Different Perspective.......2006-07-13

Vitamin records has been releasing these cd's like wild fires, just spreading orchestral music to the lesser audience of it. This cd will give you the rock music that originally started this who phenomenon (apocalyptica).

This cd is great for anyone interested in hearing the depth of a music genre. Typically when you hear a rock song, you dont hear really how the singer is supposed to influence the musical sense of the songs, but when the singer's role is put into a more balanced/equal role with the rest of the musicians, it contributes so much more to the musicality of the song. It is great for beginner musicians to understand that the singer has to be in tune with the band because he is added depth to the music, not just vocals. College music majors might also get a kick out of this album as it widens your music perspective.

These cds from vitamin really show how rock is the next evolution to classical music, it shows that although lyrics were originally added, the artists used the basic form of classical music to write songs. They all contain a theme that is repeated in the music, and most offer a "waltz" part to the song, as well as a lyrical bridge.

Good cd for every so often to change you from the norm. really neat to switch out the lyrics every so often with some classical music. Enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Much To Warrant Repeated Listenings.......2005-01-30

Over the past five years, Vitamin Records has released more than fifty of these String Quartet Tribute albums. They have run the gamut from Metallica to Clay Aiken to Alison Krauss to their most recent tribute to 2Pac. This sampler focuses primarily on alternative/heavy metal/grunge artists. So what you get is a collection of songs made famous by Staind ("It's Been Awhile"), Linkin Park ("In the End") and Korn ("Freak on a Leash").

This album (and all of the others) veers awfully close to novelty status. On first listen, it's a real charge to hear teen angst anthems like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" transformed into sedate chamber music. But it doesn't really warrant repeated listenings. The main problem is that after a few songs, they all tend to sound alike. Twenty years ago, the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet would include a Jimi Hendrix composition in live performances and the occasional recording, but they had the sense to know that this wouldn't work over the course of an entire album.

And the idea of juxtaposing classical instruments with popular music goes back even farther. In the sixties, the Hollyridge Strings released a series of albums performing the works of the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys. Bottom line? This album will force you to hear these songs in a new way and might get a laugh or two if you slip it into the CD player at your next party, but there's little here to make you come back after you've heard it once. But at $6.98, it's an inexpensive gag gift for the alternative music fan in your life. [Running Time - 50:37]

    5 out of 5 stars great album.......2006-09-18

This is the second OOTG cd ive heard, and so far I like this duo! I like how they aren't all poppy with typical hooks that are annoying, like alot of singers out there. I like how they stick with what kind of music they like, and dont try to be trendy. I like how Christines voice is spunky and has energy, she was gifted with this great energy in her voice. the last song on this album is very beautiful, it gave me chills. so many that felt like I was floating on water and I could feel it around me.

5 out of 5 stars Just Great Music Making.......2001-06-08

I came across these guys when some friends invited me to a concert. I have never heard of them before but was blown away by the Guitar Mastery of Scott Dente and the Vocal Capabilities of his Wife Christine. The music is Contemporary Rock that really delivers.

I highly recomend this CD. I have bought several copies and loan them out or give them away just to share the sound that the Dente's provide.

5 out of 5 stars OOTG is the BOMB!.......2000-05-29

These people are incredible. The Dente team delivers another superb recording with poetic, well-written and much-contemplated lyrics that "lead you in the window". Christine's beautiful, unmatched voice draws you into the song- all of which are biblically sound.

I had to get an MRI at one point, and this is the CD I had the doctors play for me. It was truly an encouragement and a blessing.

I highly recommend this group and this album!

5 out of 5 stars Best Duo in Christian Rock.......1999-08-26

The Dentes (the husband and wife team who make up OUT OF THE GREY) are a perfect blending of talent. Christine's gorgeously expressive voice, with that edge of vulnerability in it's pure beauty, combines with her husband's fine guitar work. Add that to catchy song-writing and thoughtful lyrics, and y ou have one heavenly sound. Highly Recommended! Their latest work (SEE INSIDE) is splendid. "Winter Sun" is haunting, minimalistic. "My God You are" is intense and pleading. "Not a Chance" is bouncy and great to sing along to. There isn't a dud song on the cd. If you love good music (whether you are a believer in Christ or not), try OUT OF THE GREY.

4 out of 5 stars Husband wife duo a perfect blend!.......1999-06-13

Not too many husband-wife duo's will draw my attention. But I can't help but forget that issue and accept some of the most original artwork both vocally and instrumentally on this album. Scott, of course, takes guitar playing to another level, and Christine has a unique blend of a rough weathered voice with a pristine tone that is all her. The only thing lacking is the absence of Scott's incredible acoustical magic. It's definitely there, but the listener has to strain to pick it up. A little too much of the studio sound, but overall a hit and regular listening in my household. Great tunes, solid production and a motivation to buy a concert ticket!

5 out of 5 stars My Personal OOTG Favorite.......2004-06-21

A lot of Out of the Grey fans like their debut album best, or Diamond Days. This album is my own favorite, with several breathtakingly beautiful songs. Music doesn't get any better than songs like "Steady Me", one of those tunes you can't get out of your head (and don't want to). I love "Shape of Grace", which is probably the most beautiful song ever written about a person's conversion to faith. "Dear Marianne" is a achingly gorgeous song to a girl who they told about Jesus but lost touch with, wondering what became of her. There are no weak songs on this album; I consider this one of my best albums, secular or CCM. If you can find it, get it.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Sound.......2001-07-17

The Husband and Wife team called Out Of The Grey continues to provide great sounding music. You'll hear Scott Dente on the Guitar and his wife Christine on Vocals. They are both masters of their art and it really shines through on Diamond Days, their third album. This one is definately not their last (they have 3 more after this one). Diamond Days really shows a development in their art, yet remaining constant to their passion and their faith. Yes, these guys are Christians and they sing about there faith in Jesus, but it is great music on any list or genre that you can find.

Check out "Love Like Breathing" especially Scott's jam at the end. Also don't miss "Cry For Help" and "Eye's Wide Open."

5 out of 5 stars Late to the Club.......2006-03-07

I've owned this recording for several years but never got around to writing a review. Go figure!

I learned about Scott and Christine Dente because of an article I read in Acoustic Guitar magazine. They interviewed Scott about the time that Gravity was released. So, intrigued, I went out and bought a copy of the disk.

What I found was that I had a marvelous pop recording full of decent tunes with a few stand-out tracks. Christine's voice is simply wonderful, Scott's guitars (and occasional vocals) add to the package, and the production is excellent.

The songs are all good. I listen to them all and each has a different flavor that contributes to the overall tone of the recording. I like "Bird on a Wire," "So We Never Got to Paris," and "Gravity" the best.

The lyrics are about life experience from a Christian perspective without being preachy or cloying. I appreciate the honesty of musicians who are Christian but pursue their art without beating non-Christians over the head.

If you like OOTG and don't have their back catalog, this is a decent disk to add to your collection. It is also my favorite OOTG recording, but I would be hard pressed to say exactly why.

    3 out of 5 stars Suffocated Talent!.......2002-03-09

I bought the "Out of the Grey" self-titled debut back in 1992 and I still love it. However, the next CD I was to later purchase was their third release "Gravity". While the debut sparkled with artistic sensibility within the Christian message, "Gravity" is quite generic. The message is naturally good and lyrics pass; but, most of the music slowly swirls into a numbing, pop wash of corporate mediocrity. In general listening, one's reactionary emotional amplitude is vaguely discernable. (Was that English!?) The aesthetic and unique power of sound that Scott and Christine can channel is for the most part unheard on this disc. The first three tracks sound downright uninspired. The best song which is reminiscent of the quality on the first album is the sad but beautiful "Pretending". The light and girlishly-romantic sounds of "So We Never Got to Paris" is occasionally delightful, depending on my mood. Notice - that was the only song from this album to make their greatest hits CD. "I Can Wait" is a worthwhile tune to replay, and "Bird On a Wire" is the closest to a genuine groove as they get. If you're familiar with the guitar rhythm intro on "Steady Me', Bird On a Wire is quite similar in sound, but better because it's a little expanded (and sometimes catchy)...I'm hoping to find more of the originality I heard in their debut on another OOTG LP.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2001-07-17

The Husband and Wife team Scott and Christine Dente are Out Of The Grey. Gravity is their fourth release. While a departure to the sound of their first album, it still rocks just as stong. If you're into meaning check out the lyrics, they are well thought out and really do mean something. They reflect their great faith in Jesus. They do not build a picture of the perfect life, but rather a life that is held in the palm of His hand and sustained by his Grace. Believe me when I tell you that this music is not "preachy." It real life experienced by people who believe in God.

If your into sound, just sit back and listen to the artistry -- stong vocals and amazing, amazing guitar.

"So We Never Got to Paris" is an awesome song about how life plans change when children come. You will be touched, even while you're singing along.

Buy this one. It's well worth it.

    Grace, Mercy and Peace.

5 out of 5 stars A must own for CCM fans.......2004-06-21

I have loved this couple ever since they started around 1992. Christine Dente has a unique voice that is lilting and powerful at the same time, and Scott Dente is an unbelievable guitarist and terrific songwriter. Together they are one of the top 5 artists in CCM in my book. This collection is a fine start to those not familiar with OOTG. As is almost always the case with "greatest hits" collections, there are songs you wish they had included that were left out; in my case, I wish they had included "Shape of Grace" from the album of the same name, and "Unfolding" from the "Diamond Days" album which both Scott and Christine have mentioned is one of their own favorites. Still, this is a great album and highly recommended to any fan of Contemporary Christian Music.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This One First.......2002-11-22

If you're not familiar with "Out of the Grey," this should be the album you buy first. It contains a great selection of the best tunes from their first five albums.

Scott and Christine Dente, the husband and wife team headlining the group, have produced a great body of work over the years. I would characterize it as soft rock with subtle, uplifting themes. Christine, the lead singer, has an amazingly pleasant and delicate voice that exudes a unique blend of both confidence and vulnerability. Scott is a master of the guitar and contributes great background and occasional solos. He also adds brief vocals in many of the songs.

If you buy this album and want to hear more, my recommendations would be, in this order: (1) Diamond Days (1994), (2) The Shape of Grace (1992), and (3) Gravity (1995). Virtually every song on these albums is both memorable and uplifting. Their original ablum, Out of the Grey (1991), and their fifth ablum, (See Inside) (1997), I found less appealing and would recommend only for collectors of their work.

4 out of 5 stars Remembering Out Of The Grey.......2000-04-13

"Remember This-The Out Of The Grey Collection" is a collection of Scott & Christine Dente's best songs from their first five releases. From the title song of their self-titled debut in 1991 to their remix version of "Wishes" in 1998, every song is like a story the Dentes are telling. The best songs on this collection includes the orginal 1991 "Wishes," which ends the album, plus "You're The One I've Been Waiting For," "If I Know You," "He Is Not Silent," "Nothing's Gonna Keep Me From You," and "All We Need." A majority of their album is from material from "Diamond Days" in 1994 and "Out Of The Grey" in 1991. "We May Never Get To Paris," from their '95 release "Gravity," is the only lone track to make it on this collection. It's a great song that you would hear at a cafe in Paris (if I were there, that is.) "When Love Comes To Life" and "Stay Close" (both from "Gravity") should have been added to the album. "Disappear" and "Not A Chance" are the two stand-out cuts from their last studio album, 1997's "See Inside." Two new songs are in the mix: "Walk By Faith" is a song that you would sing-a-long in the chorus to remember that "not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit." And "This Is What It Is" is another new cut about the steadfastness of God's love and forgiveness. An instrumental called "Way Late" is masterfully done by Scott Dente on guitar sounds like he and another guitar great Phil Keaggy should do more jam sessions. "Way Late" was recorded during the "Diamond Days" sessions but was never released. Portions of the track was heard at the end of a song called "Eyes Wide Open" and at the end of "Love Like Breathing." It's a great "best of" album of remembrances and memories of their songs when we heard them the first time around. Christine's vocals and Scott's guitar playing, as always, shine on and may God bless them for their efforts and continue on in their music.

    5 out of 5 stars Just a great collection.......2000-02-01

I picked up this CD after I saw Out Of The Grey in concert. It captures their almost 10 year history as an amazing musical duo. This is a worth while buy. Two things drew me into this CD. First, the amazing talents - guitar and voice. They are top notch, yet very under rated. Second, the lyrics. They are all thoughful and deep. One really gets pulled in by their meaning. Come on. What are you waiting for? Listen to some of the songs and buy it. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Classy, inspiring, hook-laden Christian Pop-Rock.......1999-02-22

"Remember This" is an outstanding collection of tracks from one of Christian music's most underrated acts. On this best-of CD, there are three new and/or previously unreleased songs, along with an updated re-working of a song from their first album. And, of course, a representative sampling from their previous five CD releases.

For those who may be unfamiliar, Out of the Grey is the working name for the husband and wife team of Christine and Scott Dente. What first attracted me to this duo's music was the silky smooth and hauntingly gentle vocals of Christine and the stellar guitar wizardry of Scott. Combine these talents with a repertoire of highly-accessible, hook-laden songs, outstanding supporting musicianship, introspective, yet inspirational lyrics, plus spectacular production from two of Christian music's best studio producers, and the results, here for the listening, are wonderful.

On the new tracks, the duo has reunited with producer Charlie Peacock who has manned the controls on all but one of their albums and is probably most responsible for the group's exceptional instrumentations. "Walk by Faith'" is an excellent example of the OOTG-Peacock working relationship; a crystal-clear, uptempo, guitar-driven, inspiring ballad that should climb the charts. "Wishes 98" is a contemporary remake of the first track on their debut album. A "techno" beat is overlayed onto the basic track, and even a flugelhorn and other jazz-oriented sounds are added in for effect. Too much "techno" for my tastes, but the results are intriguing nonetheless. "Way Late" is an instrumental that appears to be an extension of a song called "Eyes Wide Open" off of their "Diamond Days" CD. This track alone shows off Scott's guitar virtuosity.

My only concern about this release is that Greatest Hits albums often indicate a turning point in a band's chronology; i.e. changing direction, record companies, personnel or even a breakup. Hopefully none of this is on the horizon for OOTG.

If you're curious to sample Out of the Grey and are yearning for a CD with the qualities described above, check out "Remember This." You won't be disappointed!

    2 out of 5 stars Lousy remastering!.......2006-05-01

I bought this one to replace my earlier disc on the Bigtime label, because the sound quality on that one is terrible. Well, this was a waste of money because to call this new one "remastered" is tantamount to FRAUD. Whoever remastered this version must have been some kind of amateur as there is very little distinction bewtween the two versons. If you have the earlier CD don't bother with this one, unless you really want the bonus tracks.

Oh, and by the way, the songs themselves are great!

4 out of 5 stars Criminally underrated guitarist Paul B. Cutler ROCKS This Album!.......2006-02-19

In 20 years of being a radio DJ (both commercial and non-commercial radio), Every Time I have played the song "Dancing Blind" off this album, someone has called me on the listener line and asked "who's that guitarist?" Paul B. Cutler (formerly of 45 Grave, an early '80s punk-metal band) debuted as the new Dream Syndicate guitarist on this album but his style was never hip enough to be appreciated by the alternative crowd. Cutler was more influenced by Eric Clapton than the Lou Reed-style noise-making of the band's previous guitarist. This apparently turned off the Dream Syndicate's original fans but it could have won them a bunch of new fans if the music industry had only bothered to give this album some hype. Along with "Dancing Blind", "Slide Away" sounds like a lost Rolling Stones classic, "Boston" is great singer-songwriter style rock, "Drinking Problem" is about an alcoholic actor on the David Letterman show, and the rest of the songs are solid though probably less immediately memorable. '80s rock radio wanted all '80s guitar bands to sound like either Def Leppard or Stevie Ray Vaughan - anyone who sounded different got pigeon-holed as one of those 'inferior' punk-rockers. This sort of anti-spirit-of-rock narrow-mindedness killed the careers of many talented '80s bands. The Dream Syndicate were one of the major victims.

3 out of 5 stars Of three albums that matter for Dream Syndicate.......2004-05-17

After Days Of Wine And Roses and Medicine Show it would be difficult to really stand above the potentials set forth by these two discs. Out Of The Grey is a good set. It is not as strong as the previous two releases. Now, the good stuff, 50 In A 25 Zone, Now I Ride Alone, Let It Rain (cover), and the way the songs express the movement from a great live guitar band into more of a studio oriented band.
The Dream Syndicate was great, just great live on the tour right after Medicine Show right before changing guitarists. That Steve Wynn and Karl Percoda would clash is a given. Live I saw KP play John Coltrane Blues and Medicine Show on his back at 688 in Atlanta, and the rest of the time is was classic power guitarist stance. It was wonderful. SO, how does a band follow the fuzz and wash of lyric and jam? With Out Of The Grey. And that is exactly what this album is, out of the grey.
It is a reach to become a more distinct song band and not simply the greatest band of the paisley underground. If you want to complete your Dream Syndicate collection then of course buy this remastered CD that includes Ballad Of Dwight Frye, Cinnamon Girl, the blues rave Shake Your Hips and Lonely Bull. It's a lot of fun and great car CD because it sounds good loud with the wind and the road.

5 out of 5 stars Out From The Shadows Of The Velvet Underground.......2001-11-10

It seems the cult of the Dream Syndicate prefers the earlier albums. I'm guessing this group is largely made up of people who saw them perform in L.A. in their early 80s heyday. Me, I only caught them live once, in San Francisco, so my opinion is based on the studio work rather than live, and my favorite Dream Syndicate album is "Out Of The Grey". By this time they had undergone some personnel changes, with a new lead guitarist with a much clearer, crisper sound than his predecessor. They no longer sound like they are imitating the Velvet Underground. The songs are the strongest of their career. Since I'm the first Amazon reviewer of this album, I must assume that this one slipped by without a lot of notice when it came out, but it is an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars Great mixture of Christian Singers........2004-08-30

I had already bought Coram Deo 11 when I saw this CD advertised. I was intriqued by the unusual mixture of talents. I was curious to hear Michael Card and Charlie Peocock singing a duo as I could not imagine a stranger mixture then their two completely different styles of singing. I was wonderfully blessed by just how good they sang the opening song 'Lord of Love'.

I have almost all of Michael Card's albums as I consider him to be the best scriptural lyric writer of Christian songs. I have a couple of Charlie Peacock's albums and enjoy his very different talent of writing lyrics and his unusaul voice.

I own CD's of all the artists on this album and I must say that I was inspired by all the songs that are sung.

This album is an incredible CD to listen to and every song that is sung on it is unbelievably inspiring.

If you enjoy great Christian music and also an album of most of todays top artists then this is for you. Try it, you will not be disappointed
