Album Description
The powerful Nor Cal Mass Choirs recording and home video, You Can Make It!, has carried a rare, powerful worship experience across America.

The live Worship & Praise experience which created NOR CAL III/You Can Make It! was one of those all-too-rare nights where the 225 singers were truly inspired; the band of the San Franiso Bay Areas finest players was smokin; the hanging-from-the-rafters, over-capacity audience (with more than 500 turned away) had arrived with a powerful spirit of spiritual expectancy; the mountain of high-tech recording and video gear performed flawlessly and the Holy Spirit moved in an awesome, supernatural way. It was that kind of night and its captured wonderfully on NOR CAL III You Can Make It !...the recording and the video.

The stellar line-up of soloists include Vincent Manyweather, Donald Chico Eddens, Vonnie Lopez, Edward Johnson and Robin Hodge Williams. The evenings experience was simply unforgettable and this recording and video is undoubtably a hit!!! in every sense of that much overused word.

The beautiful 90-minute video of Nor Cal Mass Choirs live "You Can Make It! "concert, has been edited into a one-hour television special Directed by award-winning Los Angeles TV commercial and documentary film/video director Richard Quinones, "You Can Make - both the recordings and the video - capture the high excitement, the spiritual power and the joyous experience of worship and praise as hundreds of choir voices, musicians and the extraordinary soloists lead the capacity audience to the very throne of God

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")

Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars An American Treasure.......2007-03-03

When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.

I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.

If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.

The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.

If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16

One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.

Thank you, EMI.

I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)

5 out of 5 stars An American tragedy...........2006-02-06

This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.

5 out of 5 stars Beloved album found!.......2007-01-07

My mother bought the second part of this in 1969, and I confiscated it and played the LP until I wore out the grooves on the LP especially over "Mary Jenkins" and "Johnny," among the two most huanting ballads I've ever heard. I second MojoDJ -- this is one of the few albums that hasn't got a single bad song on it.

I didn't even think to search for it until Christmas Eve night, and I am so happy to find it again after almost 30 years. Though my partner is about tired of hearing "Mary Jenkins." ;)

4 out of 5 stars Pozo-Seco Singers/Eric Clapton.......2005-03-06

I,too, recall listening and buying Pozo-Seco Singers 45 "Time"
in the San Francisco Bay Area where I grew up. Apparently Pozo-Seco were only a hit in the LA/SF area most likely because of the influence of Drake Radio i.e. KHJ/KFRC.
What is most interesting is that Don Williams, the tenor of Pozo-Seco, went on to become Don Williams, a HUGE Country star and the biggest influence to Eric Clapton since Muddy Waters. Listen, It's true... Clapton in the late 70s early 80's was really Don Williams. "Livin' on Tulsa Time", "Wonderful Tonight":. etc.. Clapton was either Williams or J.J. Cale.
Oh yeah... this is a great 60's era folk album...

5 out of 5 stars Mellow sixties folk at its best.......2003-03-01

This trio of Texans included Susan Taylor, Donnie Williams, who became better known as country singer Don Williams, and Lofton Kline. As two of them faded into obscurity, you might think that this album is really about the other one, but not so. All three were excellent singers and each of them got their chance to sing lead.

There is a good mix of original songs and covers. They had a series of minor American pop hits - they never made the top 30, but they came close a couple of times. Their hits were Time, I'll be gone, I can make it with you and Look what you've done.

The covers include If I fell (Beatles), Come a little bit closer (Jay and the Americans). Guantanamera (Sandpipers), Silver threads and golden needles (originally recorded by Wanda Jackson, but later an American pop hit for the Springfields, with Dusty as lead singer), House of the rising sun (most famously a big hit for the Animals, though their version was also a cover), She understands me (which I first heard sung by Teresa Brewer as He understands me, although I think the original singer was Johnny Tillotson), You've lost that loving feeling (Righteous brothers), If I were a carpenter, Almost persuaded (David Houston), Ribbon of darkness (Gordon Lightfoot) and Louisiana man.

If you enjoy mellow sixties folk music, particularly by the Brothers four, you will enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2002-10-16

The mix of Don Williams bass and Susan Taylor's angelic vocals is a match made in heaven. I bought the LP "Time" back in 1965 without ever having heard of the group. The picture of a sultry Susan Taylor on the cover and a nice selection of standard 60s folk tunes in the track listing was more than enough for me. Every song on that "Time" LP turned out to be a knockout. When this became available on CD I jumped at the chance to buy and discovered a new gem as a bonus track, "I Believed It All", a beautifully sung ode to the the innocence of childhood.

Williams of course went on to bigger and better things in a C&W vein but unfortunately Susan Taylor seems to have faded into obscurity. In any case, this CD would definitely be in my "stranded on a desert isle" backpack.

4 out of 5 stars A definite de-stresser.......2002-04-24

I ordered this CD a few weeks ago after waking up one morning with "Look What You've Done" in my head -- probably 30 years since I had last listened to the album. Absolutely the best money I've spent in a long time. Don't let the "touch of country" dissuade you from trying this group. Susan Taylor's voice will hold up to any genre. It would be a shame for anyone to miss this CD. With only a couple of exceptions out of this double CD, the songs are relaxing and mellow, with a different spin on a few classics. Try it.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The movie version of The Rocky Horror Show has turned into such an enduring cult success that it has pretty much obliterated the fact that it all started with a stage show. And now Richard O'Brien's musical is back on stage, where some say it truly belongs (it was nominated for the category Best Revival of a Musical in the 2001 Tony Awards). With a great cast that includes Dick Cavett, Alice Ripley (Janet), Tom Hewitt (Frank 'N' Furter), and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Magenta), the revival fires on all cylinders. Note that while Joan Jett was in the cast as Columbia, she's not on the CD (Kristen Lee Kelly is). But Lea DeLaria, last seen stealing the show in On the Town, more than compensates by playing both Eddie (Meat Loaf in the movie!) and Dr. Scott--and doing great by both. As a bonus, the song "Once in a While" is back after being cut from the movie. Bursting with energy, this recording brings the rock back in Rocky. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite cast recordings.......2007-01-17

This was the first Rocky Horror album I've ever listened to besides the movie soundtrack. Despite the lack of Joan Jett as Columbia and the 2nd Usherette, this album is sweet. Daphne-Rubin Vega is perfect as Magenta. And Tom Hewlett 's interpretation as Frank N. Furter is just in sync with the character. But he's still no Tim Curry. And the rest of the cast is sublime. And with Dick Cavett as the Criminologist and famed lesbian comedienne Lea DeLaria as both Eddie and Dr. Scott is just excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Thougt You Were The Candyman Didn't ya freggy!.......2006-06-22

I thought that this was gonna be just another edition of the Rocky Horror Show. But boy was I wrong.I loved it they really modernized and gave it more of a Rock flavor than in the original play which was more pop.I just loved how they had the Overture and Space shipa partof the cd.They really recreated great for broadway. When i heard that broadway was doing Then Rocky Horror Show I didn't know what to think.Because Rocky Horror had been an off-broadway show for many years. The thought of it being onBroadway was just amazing Because people back in the 70's and 80's always thought that The Rocky Horror Show was much too trashy to be put on Broadway.Because you always think about broadway plays as being classy and eligent. They didn't want a play about Sex and Horror and Gay Transvestites. But this was just a head turner.I loved it.It's definitely 5 stars. The cd quality was great. It was so professionally done and it was great.I think any RHS Fan will love it.This was no candyman!

4 out of 5 stars The Rockiest Recording to Date.......2006-06-07

This 2000 Broadway revival of the cult classic THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW boasts a completely re-vamped orchestration of Richard O'Brien's score. This is certainly the most rock-fused version of these songs to date, and right from the "Overture" the listener can assume this. Many may not be able to accept this harder, bolder score and I myself am a bit skeptical, considering the more piano-driven and sci-fi sounding orchestrations of the film soundtrack or Roxy cast recording. However, it is so interesting to hear these songs done like this that I cannot help but enjoy it. The performances are half-and-half. Daphne Rubin-Vega belts out the opening number in that great gravelly voice she has, and Raul Esparzza sends chills down my spine every time I hear his two great solo moments ("The darkness must flow down the river...." and "Frank 'N' Furter, it's all over..."). Sebastian LaCause is amazing as Rocky, as thankless a part that is. Eddie and Dr. Scott being portrayed by a woman (Lea DeLaria) is one of the strangest casting decisions ever and is too distracting to be able to even listen to her (his? I don't know!!!) songs: "Hot Patootie" and "Eddie's Teddy." Tom Hewitt does his best as Frank 'N' Furter, but the character was so well defined by Tim Curry in the film (one of the most underrated performances ever) that one can't help but ignore him. I'd say that this recording is something every ROCKY HORROR fan should listen to; it just all depends on whether you like the new or original orchestrations.

3 out of 5 stars Good recording, bad show........2006-03-10

Rocky Horror is an American institution. It's indelible, unforgettable, and entirely unique. But without the audience participation, the show is revealed - it's simply not very good. It's a passable (if dated) parody of '50s B-movies with a transvestite main character and some halfway decent songs. The show lives with and dies without an audience. The lyrics, the characters - nothing is half as fun without the audience throwing and shouting and bantering right along.

That said, this is a VERY good recording of what's there. Tom Hewitt does as good a job as anyone trying to fill Tim Curry's sequined heels, and brings some nice twists to the table instead of going the Curry-imitation route. Raul Esparza as Riff-Raff is electric - his rendition of "Time Warp" is unlike anything else you're likely to hear on a cast recording. He blasts it right into outer space, screaming like the world's going to end. Daphne Rubin-Vega is plenty of fun as Columbia, giving a nicely sinuous and raw-edged sexiness to the role. The orchestra gives their all to the new arrangements, and they sound crystal clear.

It's definitely the best recording of the show available, even sans Tim Curry.

3 out of 5 stars Oh Daphne!.......2005-12-29

Most of the reviews have it right here - this production wasn't really Rocky at it's best. That being said, I must say that Daphne Ruben-Vega as magenta is probably one of the most interesting, refreshing, and note worthy things about this recording. Very cool in that regard.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Make It.......2003-01-02

I think this song is written and sung from the heart. I personally like it because it fits my character. I was very bad off sick and was given 5 months to live, but I am still here serving the lord. I am a woman of faith and color and I respect the songs written by Shirley Caesar. She is my idol, and always will be. Her music is so spiritual and has alot of meaning to it.I would also like to know if her song "You Can Make It" comes instrumental. If so, I would be interested in getting it. There is alot of meaning to her songs. Actually, I like her whole Shirley Caesar "You Can Make It" CD.

            Album Description

Not only did this Texan folk-rock trio launch country star Don Williams' career, but they scored six chart hits in their own right, virtually none of which have come out on CD! But all six of those hits appear in our package, which includes both of the Pozo-Seco Singers' original charting Columbia albums, 'Time' (1966) and 'I Can Make It with You' (1967) together with their two non-LP charting singles here as bonus tracks, 'I Believed It All' and 'Louisiana Man', for a total of 24 tracks! Original artwork. Collectors' Choice Music.
