Cowboys, Sisters, Rascals And Dirt
Editorial Reviews
From Parents' Choice®
This album by country legend Waylon Jennings is not for those who find a boys-only-like-"boy"-stuff and girls-only-like-"girl"-stuff attitude alarmingly retro. (The spirit with which the album was created is anything but retro). Jennings, in disarming, simple intros between winning original songs, explains why a little boy yearns for a boy pal to climb trees with ("All of My Sisters Are Girls") or to get grubby with ("Dirt"). In his signature whiskey baritone, he performs with such tenderness and gentle, tongue-in-cheek humor it's no surprise to learn that the songs were inspired by young relatives, most particularly his youngest son. "If I Could Only Fly" is a child's imagined freedom flight that notes, "but I'd always come right back"; "Cowboy Movies" is a song about a dad who, wanting to share his passion for Westerns, is gently clued in that his son is "a nowboy," not a cowboy. Jennings is a spellbinding storyteller in "Useless, the Little Horse That Didn't Grow," a tale he wrote with his son to affirm that heroes can be small, even shy; he locks the message in a song called "Small Packages." A boy-and-girl chorus joins in. The musicians, including Jennings on guitar, are top-notch. Parents' Choice Gold Award. (Lynne Heffley, Parents' Choice, 1998)

How excited I was to find a Waylon for kids! We have a local celebration each year called Frontier Days, and I have dancers that perform. It has been a very long time since finding new music geared to kids for the Western Theme, and there are some delightful songs on this CD!

In a style that recalls his voice-overs on the TV series The Dukes of Hazzard, Waylon Jennings doesn't just sing these 11 original songs for kids, he narrates in between the songs, giving context and meaning. A man who appreciates the way children think and the things they go through as they grow up, Jennings, who calls himself "a big rascal singing about little rascals," writes from a child's point of view, remembering in "When I Get Big," for example, what it's like to dream of growing up to become president--ending the wars, protecting all the animals from harm--and how it feels to be a boy with too many sisters ("All of My Sisters Are Girls"). Several of the songs revolve around strikingly fresh ideas--a child's celebration of "Dirt," for starters--and Jennings isn't shy about rocking several to his trademark "thump-bump" beat. All in all, a different sort of children's record from the man who insists he's "a kid trapped in a grown-up body." --Alanna Nash

Stands the Test of Time.......2002-04-28
After two years of regularly listening to this CD in the car on the way to eveerywhere it remains a favorite. I can only say that about Penner and Raffi. Everyone else has fallen by the wayside.
Even I do not tire of these songs.
"Dirt, dirt, good old dirt.".......2001-02-24
During my time working on a children's radio show, this was one of our favorite albums to play songs from. Waylong Jennings is a huge part of our American culutre (I mean, the guy worked with Buddy Holly and wrote the theme song of THE DUKES OF HAZZARD) and this album illustrates why. Children are extremely keen and intelligent and as a society we really don't give them that credit. We often assume that kids don't know what they are talking about and if you take time to try to explain something to them, you're wasting your time because they won't understand anyway. Thus, a lot of music that is labeled "children's music" is just a bunch of mindless garbage. The best artists in children's music know that kids are smart and remember what it was like to be "little". Their songs don't talk down to kids, but give them a boost instead. Waylon Jennings is such an artist. Whether he's singing about growing up, sisters, or dirt he fuels the imagination with inspiration and memory. Many of the songs are fun to sing along with. Most kids will enjoy singing about dirt, brothers will really like singing about how all their sisters are girls, and even adults can relate to a bad day. A wonderful treasure for the whole family.
Great kids CD--especially for boys.......2000-04-18
Here, Waylon shows that he understands how kids think better than most adults. You can ignore the EW comment that it is 'politically incorrect'. There's nothing racist or sexist or anything like that to worry about. They probably wrote that because this CD is more for boys than girls. This is a great CD for kids.
Excellent CD for the kids as well as adults!.......1998-11-20
My two children and I have heard this Waylon CD many times and they just love it. I think it is great as well. Waylon wrote every song on this CD and he really knows how to connect with the youngsters. As far as Entertainment Weekly saying it was politically incorrect, well... It's great!! Dave in Minnesota
