Editorial Reviews
From the Label
Positive music for children! In a world where the demand for enlightening books and music for adults and children are rapidly increasing, we offer parents and children an original, unique and entertaining approach to learning about the wonder of life's possibilities. Our first release, National Parenting Publications Award Winner, "A Child's Spirit" went beyond religion, race and color to enhance a child's spiritual growth and promote self-esteem.
"Creative World", our new release, is a great companion to "A Child's Spirit" and is designed to open a child to their creative power and to introduce them to ideas which promote a positive outlook on life. "Creative World" is written for children of all ages and holds a collection of thirteen original songs written by Bunny Hull that are colorful, fun and reminiscent of some of the greatest children's classics.

An unlikely star on the '60s rock scene who played "psychedlic jazz" on bills with Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead before sitting out most of the '70s and early '80s to meditate and escape commercial pressures, saxophonist Charles Lloyd has in his "comeback" phase established himself as a far deeper and more interesting player. His 11th album for ECM, and his first live one for the label, Sangam introduces his new trio, featuring Indian tabla ace Zakir Hussain (known for his work with Shakti) and acclaimed young jazz drummer Eric Harland (heard on Lloyd's previous CD, Jumping the Creek). A kind of followup to Which Way is East (2004), Lloyd's epic series of duets with his dear, soon-to-depart friend, drummer Billy Higgins, Sangam roots the leader's flowing and soaring spiritual investigations in a vibrant and varied rhythmic attack. True to the album title (Hindi for confluence or union), the band feeds off each other exceptionally well, especially considering this concert in Santa Barbara was their first together. Lloyd has never had the most imposing sound on tenor, but pushed by his partners, he works up moments of Coltrane-like intensity and drive. With his expansive palette--he also plays alto sax, flutes and tarogato--he avoids the slow, monochromatic mood-making of many of his '90s efforts. --Lloyd Sachs

Jazz and beyond.......2007-01-28
Charles Lloyd is an enigmatic figure who first made the scene in the '60s. The following decade saw him drift largely out of the business, making very few records and spending a period of time teaching transcendental meditation. The past 15 years have seen his career revived and taken to new heights through a series of albums with ECM.
His current outing for the label, 'Sangam,' was recorded in '04 at an event billed as 'Homage To Billy Higgins,' the legendary drummer who passed away in 2001.
Drawing upon the inspiration that Higgins had been for him, Lloyd assembled a trio at the Freihofer's Jazz Festival that was rich with rhythmic and percussive possibilities that included himself on tenor and alto saxophones, tarogato, bass and alto flute, piano, and percussion; Zakir Hussain on tabla, voice, and percussion; and Eric Harland on drums, percussion and piano.
The disc captures what transpired that night. The experience was as transcendent as the music, such that Lloyd kept the band, which is now known as the Sangam Trio, and supplements his regular quartet.
Unlike more 'conventional' jazz, where the order of business is typically theme, solo, solo, theme, 'Sangam' is more 'conversational' with the songform providing an outline from which the players engage in an interactive musical dialogue steeped in subtlety and nuance.
With the mentioned array of instruments at its disposal, the trio fashions a wide variety of shapes, colors, textures and sounds. Still its members remain ever mindful of retaining a sense of 'space' in what they do, thereby lending the music an organic ebb and flow that accentuates the individual and collective parts of this dynamic ensemble.
Those following Lloyd's renaissance, as well as those interested in checking him out for the first time, will find 'Sangam' to be an enlightening and indispensable document.
Direct Jazz Transmission fron the masters.......2007-01-25
Listening to Charles Lloyd is hearing a direct transmission from the masters of Jazz that Lloyd studied under and worked with. The list is too long to mention but to name but a few Oscar Peterson,Joe Zowenall,Tony Williams,Herbie Hancock,Keith Jarett,Jack DeJonette. The list goes on and on.Other than seeing Jimi Hendrix.I have never felt such an atmosphere of a true musical genius. His comand of time is astonishing as he works with Zakir Hussain on tabla and Eric Harland on drums. When you first see them on stage they look quite stark but from this trio completely based on the formation of a cosmic rythmn section flows a symphony of the freeist and most beautifully harmonic music I have ever heard.
Charles Lloyd reminds us of the basis of Jazz and this free musical tradition, that he came from. That the "beat" is the alchemy and the very soul of this profound music.
NOTHING NEW !.......2006-11-18
Charles Lloyd the heir apparent after John Coltrane's death has been lost just about that length of time. He is a great tenor saxophone player but does not seem to have any real direction with his music. With out Trane's music to feed off of, charles's music has grown stagnant . He has had some brillant moment to be sure over the last 39 years since Trane's death but not enough !
In the key of OHM please........2006-07-27
I recall sitting in Golden Gate Park during the first Be-In. Charles Lloyd played a haunting melody on his saxophone which he called Forest Flower; that may have been the name of the Album? Unfortunately, short-term memory loss has me on that...
Charles Lloyd, Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland comprise the trio on Sangam, the title of the CD. Sangam, according to the liner notes, which I copied is: a word of multiple definitions which signifies confluence, a meeting place, a gathering or coming together.
Creativity flows as they play from the heart of the universe.
Buy it if you love esoteric, gorgeous, floating sound. Bravo!
Perfect recording, perfect music making.......2006-06-06
There's nothing more to be said about ECM's engineering. It's perfect. That's it.
As for the music, nothing could be farther from the cheapness of our times, our trite absorptions, our fleeting fancies. Truly profound music-making, full of joy and sorrow admixed.
This is music that goes straight to the heart of worship. You needn't be religious (I'm not) to recognise, in this work, the unmistakeable scent of incense ascending to the heavens. It's a prayer, even if the One being prayed to is not external to the Ones doing the praying.
I'm going to play this one a hundred times over, not as background music to parties, but in the secret space of solitude.

Singer-trumpeter-guitarist Olu Dara has been knocking around New York City's jazz circles for almost 20 years. On "In the World" he embraces Caribbean rhythms, African highlife/socca riffs, and gut-bucket blues. Vaguely reminiscent of Taj Mahal's fanciful integration of world music and the blues, Dara consistently straddles urban and rural artistry. Sophisticated yet irresistibly down-home, this collection is festive, tuneful, and engaging. Songs like "Rain Shower" and "Natchez Shopping Blues" are clearly based in the American folk-blues idiom, while "Okra" and "Your Lips" are closer to an Afro-Cuban aesthetic. Dara's warm voice is limited but expressive, and his guitar playing fundamentally percussive. On the other hand, Dara's trumpet is unique and extremely lucid. This album comprises a fascinating tour of several musical cultures. --Mitch Myers
Customer Reviews:
What music should be..........2006-10-29
From "Okra" to "Zora" and my all-time favorite, "Harlem Country Girl" Olu Dara takes his listener on a ride from Harlem, to Natchez, to West Africa by way of the of the Caribbean. Grab your passport and some good dancing shoes for this gem. Olu Dara is a best kept secret. I saw him at the Hot House in Chicago and immediately wanted to run out and get evertything he's recorded. His voice, masterful delivery and phrasing, his virtuostic cornet playing and his guitar work will enchant.
Groove music for Grownups.......2006-07-31
This is a rich mature effort from an artist who understands the connections between the various genres of music (blues, jazz, soul, etc.) that evolved from the African-American south. Listen closely and hear a horn player's phrasing in the vocals. The songs brim over with his sense of humanity, knowing and not without a sense of humor while his band is a groove monster. Highly reccomended.
Splendid.......2006-07-18
This album starts off on a soulful and catchy note, which continues throughout the album. The last track, KIANE, is beautiful. Dara's collaboration with his son Nas is awesome. My favourite would have to be YOUR LIPS. Buying this album will not be a regretable action- Dara blows all those other fish out of the water.
In The World is a high quality album you won't regret owning.......2004-12-24
This truly is a great album. I'm already a fan of artists like Muddy Waters & have a decent amount of Jazz albums from Coltrane and Miles. But, I'll have to honestly admit I picked up this album after hearing him play the horn on Nas's "Life's A B****", "Dance" & others. This album is a LOT better than I expected it to be.
The music is a combination of blues, jazz, soul, poetry, and other genres. Olu has a classic blues voice, in which he sings on every song but two. "Bubber (If Only)" features a female & "Jungle Jay" features Nas, both of whom speak poetry over Dara's incredible production and horn. Every other song features the voice of Olu.
Some songs are have more of a jazz feel to them, others are pretty up tempo (almost a Caribbean feel to them), Dara gets pretty soulful on others, but I'd say a little less than half are Blues songs. More powerful than his voice, is the composition of the album. The music is stirring at times, evoking any mood he chooses, the way only a veteran can do.
In The World is great for just background mood music, yet at the same time is powerful enough that when you sit down to really listen, it'll still grab your ear. If you're even slightly interested after reading all these reviews, I'd highly recommend you pick this up. That's exactly what I did and I'm more than satisfied.
A classic.......2004-02-10
The firt time I heard Olu Dara was at a concert at Yoshi's in Oakland, Ca, from that day on, I felt in love with his music and his style. This cd is just a classic, I have listen to it, at least once a day.
My favorite song is Harlem Country Girl...

On East/West Bill Frisell proves once again he is one of the most prolific players of his generation. While it's a measure of his success that he's able to pursue a wide variety of projects, the bottom line is his insatiable musical curiosity warrants all the attention he receives. East/West is a two-disc live set, one recorded on each coast. All are trio performances, with drummer Kenny Wollesen playing throughout, Viktor Krauss on bass in California, Tony Scherr in New York. So supple is the interplay that the stylistic change in the two bassists makes for a subtly different character to each of the nights. Frisell focuses on a mix traditional, folk, and even soul in the west; in the east there's a bit more drawn from the jazz canon (though not entirely, as the version of "Crazy" is a marvel as Scherr sets down his bass and picks up an acoustic guitar). --David Greenberger
Album Description
Guitarist and 2005 Grammy Award winner Bill Frisell's East/West is a double-disc set featuring two trio performances: Frisell on guitar and Kenny Wolleson on drums and percussion, with Tony Scherr on bass for the East disc, which was recorded at New York's Village Vanguard, and Viktor Krauss on bass for West, recorded at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA.
Customer Reviews:
Grooving wherever he's playing.......2007-03-09
This is an excellent Frisell disc, highly recommended. It is garnered from live performances both on the East coast and West coast. Some of the band members are the same but others are different. Overall there is great continuity in the music. Frisell plays it very cool and the music is relaxing and fun to listen to. The mix is great, and it stands repeated listenings well. I think this is one of Bill's best. It is more mainstream jazz, compared to some of Frisell's other more experimental outings. So buy with no worries if you're not into some of the strangeness.
Perfect.......2006-09-05
Although Bill Frisell has spanned many styles over his carreer, this double-CD set portrays what I think is his best playing. On songs such as "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" and "Shenandoah," he turns the melodies into starting points for his incredible improvisations. Also recommended tracks: Ron Carter and Blues For Los Angeles.
Absolute American Art.......2006-09-04
This collection is an excellent introduction to the music of Bill Frisell because it covers many of the styles that he explores in his extensive catalog. It includes new renditions of classic American tunes and original compositions, and also demonstrates his great talent at manipulating sound through the judicious use of effects pedals. The pieces on disk one consist of energetic country/blues runs over a hard-driving bass and drum foundation, whereas disk two displays Bill's softer, more artsy-jazz side. In other words, both Hank Williams and Allen Ginsberg would find something enjoyable on this record. While this release does possess flights of experimentation and blinding technical ability, on the whole it follows a distinct "American" style--classic folk/country melodies alongside a distinctly American jazz/blues base, shot through with driving electric solos, and soft contemplative "intellectual" pieces. This recording is perfect for a long trip up California's Highway 395, passing through the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains in Bishop (the best beef jerky west of the Mississippi is available here), Bridgeport, and on to Reno, Nevada. Even though Bill's playing is technically masterful, it is not pretentious or bizarre: in other words, you don't need a degree from Julliard to recongnize his stunning technical and compositional skills. This record has both that quaint, nostalgic "longing for home" quality that imbued the songs your Texan grandpa sang, and the ecstatic experience of an espresso-and-hash-filled coffee house. He is an original American artist who plays music that can only be described as utterly "American." Unfortunately, right now the music that America exports to the world tends to consist of sexed-out pop-tarts, depressed drug addicts, and "gangsta-rappas." Just imagine what the rest of the world would think of American art if musicians like Bill Frisell were given prominence, instead of hacks like 50 Cent, Kurt Cobain, or Britney Spears.
Best live cd in a while.......2006-03-21
This live 2 disc set is what Frisell & Co. are all about live. What they can do with even the simplest, seemingly nothing song is amazing. Also check out Further/East, Further/West (which I think I like a bit better because of the tune selection).
Lotsa BIll playing guitar.......2006-02-26
I was interested to hear this disc because Bill Frisell's recent albums have had a lot of players, so there's a sense you don't get a lot of Bill Frisell in the Intercontinentals, or even in Unspeakable. I agree with a lot of reviewers that it's a good album, and the first disc is better than the second. The rhythm sections are all very able, but the music is all Bill Frisell.

Hint At Riot To Tint Hair = Ultimate Rhino Hit.......2006-12-24
Accordion, violin & banjo (or sometimes dobro, harmonica and viola) make a bluegrass/Klezmer kind of sound, although the compositions tend toward a more cinematic sweep. Like Messiaen's "Quatuor pour la fin du temps" the instrumentation here feels accidental, circumstantial even. THT wanders between salon music and fractured dance band, never really deciding who, or what they are.
Or maybe what they are is this fuzzy in-between, where nothing is what it seems?
Helium is the second lightest element.
Reinventing the setup with insane fusion project.......2006-07-17
This ambitious band delivers it's own special brand of totally unique tango-americana by way of classical, parisian, and western influence. The unclassified trio does make extremely artsy, experimental music, although for this exception to the rule the savagely upbeat and extremely talented nature of the music will make everyone but the most self conscious listeners forget that the band sounds so weird since most likely they will be so engrossed in it's singular propulsion. Featuring outstanding musicianship from the three players (violin, guitar, piano-accordion), the level of interplay and synergy here is quite stunning- particularly through the ears of one who has true appreciation for musical composition. The sparse, though wildly eccentric, tunes do everything they can at each and every turn to floor with virtuoso-like precedence that would have become mired in it's own boxed off approach had it not been for the surging melodies to reel the listener back in from an overextended gray zone of "playing". As it is, this band is not to be ignored.

DISTINCTIVE.......2000-08-18
Is jazz too limiting a word? Tin Hat Trio makes a case in point. While certainly jazz oriented, they owe more of a debt to Charles Ives than to Charles Parker. Are they rooted in jazz? No less than they are rooted in the Serialist and Art music tradition. Yet, they certainly are capable of swinging. I think it is fair to say that they neatly encompass several strands of 20th century music including jazz. A Life in East Poultney starts it off showing a little more of a tendency to branch out into different styles than they had shown on Memory Is An Elephant. An Irish folk feeling prevails rather than the harmonic minor shuffle that endures through most of the first album. The second track is more reminiscent of the first album having that sort of Europe between the wars vibe. Throughout the album one can hear strands of Chet Atkins, Bill Frisell, Tom Waits (included on the final cut by the way), Stuff Smith, Alban Berg and a virtual potpourri of different musical styles. Country, Klezmer, Swing, Italian restaraunt music, there's alot to choose from here. My only complaint: A couple of the tracks really swing (#11,#13). I would have really loved to hear these themes developed further and improvised on. An excellent album-eccelectic yet still very much restrained. Their influences are all over the map, yet their sound is very distinctive.
Helium - Tin Hat Trio.......2000-06-21
I would recommend this CD to any one who likes good music with a difference. No one else that I know of puts out such wonderful unique and soothing music. I can't get enough of this CD! Every cut is great! The blend of sounds....truly wonderful! I hope these three gifted musicians are around for a long time to come! I really can't put into words what this music does to me. I love it. (Tom Waits ain't bad either!)

Stylistic shifts are nothing new in the career of Bill Frisell, who changes musical directions more often than Madonna. In fact, he even covered a Madonna song once. Unspeakable continues that tendency as Frisell teams up with Hal Willner, a willful musical eclectic. The two have worked together on collaborative projects including tributes to Nino Rota, Walt Disney, and Charles Mingus. Willner, who is also the turntabulist here, orchestrates a landscape of turntable spins and space jams using generic library production discs for much of his source material. '60s Dragnet jazz horns and orchestral Twilight Zone stylings lend the modern sound of Unspeakable a strangely nostalgic hue. Frisell finds himself in a landscape of Ligeti-like strings, bongo percolations, and Ghanian tribal calls, most of it super-charged by the rhythm team of bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Their funky beats lay the terrain for Frisell's angular crossfire solos, but he can also wax sweetly nostalgic on "Hymn for Ginsberg" for guitar and string trio. Bill Frisell is filed in jazz, but he continues to be a genre unto himself. --John Diliberto
Album Description
On Unspeakable, guitarist Bill Frisell and producer Hal Willner (Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed) take a freewheelings, idiosyncratic approach to the modern art of music sampling, in a groove-and-soul based project. Frisell and Willner employ often obscure songs and sounds culled from vintage vinyl as the jumping off-point for their own sonic explorations, with choice fragments borrowed and integrated into original compositions. Unspeakable can have a fierce and infectious groove at times, and at others will adopt a more relaxed and reflective feel.
Customer Reviews:
Exciting, Interesting and Unusual.......2007-01-30
This 2004 gem is without a doubt, one of the most exciting and interesting jazz albums I own. Frisell has an incredibly unique voice with a truly eclectic range and it's impossible to mistake him for anyone else. I remember seeing the movie "Finding Forrester" some time ago and as soon as I heard the first few notes of the score, I knew it was he.
I already had quite a number of albums he has played on as a guest, including some by the bassist Marc Johnson and fellow guitarist Mike Stern, but this was the first album of his that I decided to buy. His approach to melody and improvisation (on this album particularly) took some getting used to and is certainly unusual but I totally get him now and can see clearly why he is one of the most respected jazz guitarists of his generation. This is a great album.
3 and 1/2 stars on first blush.......2007-01-12
I think I've figured out the "Unspeakable" part. These sound like demos or backing tracks to singing or spoken word parts (some of the titles refer to poets) that never got recorded. Well, you can't fake the funk, but as has been pointed out here, it is nice to have Mr. Frisell back spreading around his electro-geek weirdness in the land where the "inner-city" exists. In fact, let's say you and your sweetheart are lucky enough rent a nice car and leave Oaktown behind for a weekend getaway up the coast. Have I got a soundtrack for you. This is one I am looking forward to revisiting as time goes by.
Smooth and graceful.......2006-03-15
Frisell's "Unspeakable" recording is smooth and relaxing to listen to. It is the type of music where you can simply relax and get lost in the hypnotic quality, or you can listen carefully and hear interesting textures and overlays. He chooses each note with care, and each of those notes fits well within the context of the song. It is produced well so that you can hear each note ring fully and gracefully. It is nice to hear a master musician use an understated approach to composition, and this approach works well to effectively pull the listener into the song.
Bill Frisell at the Zenith of his expression...........2006-02-22
Of course, I am a hugely biased fan of Bill Frisell, own several of his CDs and have seen him play live on several occasions in a variety of musical contexts.
Unspeakable is the very best music album of any kind I have listened to in several years. It is hypnotically transplendent and so highly addictive I could not take the CD out of my car for several weeks. In fact, I gave this CD as a gift to several of my very close friends.
Tightly crafted songs.......2005-12-23
Grammy-winning "Unspeakable" continues Bill Frisell's style of putting emphasis on song over solo. The music is very structured. Unlike some of his recent albums, there is a fair amount of shaped feedback and looping. In rough terms, the album alternates loud catchy songs with quiet textural ones.

Bill Frisell took the Downtown New York jazz scene to Nashville, and Marc Ribot did the same thing for Cuba with his Los Cubanos Postizos and Muy Divertido. But until Frisell's The Intercontinentals the robust, haunting sound of Malian blues guitar was largely untouched by six-stringing jazzoids. The aptly named Frisell ensemble here includes Brazilian guitar and vocal great Vinicius Cantuaria (playing solid drums half the time), Mali's premier percussionist Sidiki Camara, Greek oud and bouzouki virtuoso Christos Govetas, pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz, and violinist Jenny Scheinman. Rather than cover all the band's continents, though, the focal point is largely singular: "Boubacar" (in honor of Malian guitar pioneer Boubacar Traore) opens the set and has its vibe continued with a cover of his "Baba Drame," and everywhere the notes are hit and moods invoked as if Ali Farka Toure were looking on from Timbuktu. This is, though, still Frisell. An American earthiness crops up in Leisz's steel, as does the Mediterranean in Govetas's oud. And Frisell's sampled loops create an atmospheric cloudiness grounded by Camara's calabash and djembe and Cantuaria's drumming. In the constant sonic middle ground are the trifecta of oud, violin, and bass, merging the melody and rhythm brilliantly. Rootsy and undeniable, The Intercontinentals is yet another Frisellian work of genius. --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
Blending Frisell's own brand of American twang and his inimitable improvisational style with Brazilian, Greek, and Milian guitarist Boubacar Traore and Brazilian singer Gilberto Gil. 14 tracks packaged in a slipcase. Nonesuch. 2003.

Modal intercontinental music .......2005-07-04
The music Bill played in the sessions that produced this album is really modal. Almost all the tunes are modal vamp based on one chord orchestrated with the common Frisell extravaganza. This should not sound as a critic but on the opposite as a compliment to Bill's music. Infact the album is really a joy to listen, it has a strange amalgama of instruments and the music is in the end ipnotic and always interesting. I really really like the album but at the same time I can't find all this genius in Bill's work at least in the case of albums like this one. He is of course an extremely talented musician with a style of his own, very recognizable. He displayed his style all over a vast array of albums in which he still showed a lot of ideas. Nevertheless I can't talk about genius in the case of an album made almost entirely of modal vamp. It is really interesting, very well played and orchestrated, but genius is something else I think. And I think that this music cannot be called Jazz. Pay attention. This is not Jazz. It's modal music, contemporary music, improvisational music, but it is not Jazz. Jazz is that thing that swings. Anyway a very nice album. You can buy it with confidence if you love music with a lot of space and atmosphere in it.
Very nice but tends to sit on the shelf.......2004-10-16
I am a huge fan of Boubacar Traore and a big fan of Frisell's, so I should LOVE this cd, but I only like it. The idea that this is "uncharted territory" for Frisell is silly. The best tracks are those which derive the most from Boubacar. Other tracks, like track 5, are not uncharted territory, they are virtually indistinguishable from any of Frisell's recent albums. Frisell again seems content to mostly play session and studio man rather than take chances creatively.
That said, it was wise to draw inspiration from the great Boubacar, and this cd is probably my favorite of Frisell's recent work, along with Ghost Town; and I'd recommend it over Blues Dream or Good Dog and some of the others.
UPDATE AFTER A YEAR: After a year, I'd have to say that I think it's not quite as ethereal as it wants to be. Again, the tracks that cut-and-paste some Boubacar are nice though not really better than the sum of the parts, but the other tracks (try track 3) are nondescript, unimaginative, and oh-so-how-familiar-Frisell. I remember Bruce Willis describing in an interview that his approach to acting in the movie "Unbreakable" was to do "as little as possible." That seems to be Frisell's approach all too often, and while it sounds like brilliant philosophy, it doesn't suit either's work. Frisell is not flamboyant or showy by nature, so toning down doesn't contain the fire, it extinguishes it. When he goes all out in either direction, he's better. But too often he sits in the middle, laying down a simple atonal progression of a few notes, and then meandering alongside (tracks 3 and 13). It works for me about as well as when classical compositions which front a Hungarian melody or something: it doesn't. Some tracks here are great. I think we need to get Ginger Baker to get him to actually do some lead guitar again.
Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm...This is What Music Should Be!!.......2004-09-09
On this 2003 release, Bill Frisell teams up with a group of world musicians. This album was nominated for "World Album of the Year" at the Grammmies, and I can certainly see why. The music is so textural, melodic, and at times quite breathtaking. This album is has a real open quality to the music. Even though this is Bill Frisell's world music album it still has the Frisell guitar sound in tact. The album is very eclectic yet very accessible. That's the thing that I admired about Bill especially in the last 4 years is that he's been making music that is VERY accessible and easy on the ear unlike his avant-garde jazz excursions in the earlier part of his career. The instrumentation on this album is strange, but it really works out well. This album should appeal to those already fans of Bill's music and those who just enjoy good music.
From one intercontinental to another...........2004-07-14
Being both an intercontinental myself and a Bill Frisell lover, I was naturally pleased when this was released. But little did I know how absolutely magical it would be. Vinicious Cantuaria and Jenny Shineman make this album for me, they, like Frisell and everyone on this album, are the type of Artists the world needs more of. Intercontinental, unpredictable, modest, and beautiful.
Wake Up!.......2004-06-02
This album is, as my favorite cut is named, "Magic." Over sixty-five minutes of constant surprise: I get into the African groove and suddenly it's Greek; I sink into the Greek and a violin comes in and suddenly disappears; then there's an Appalachian twang, a Brazilian dance rhythm, and some sounds I didn't know existed till now, voices humming and wailing or incanting Portuguese or Senegalese, and everything blends, flows, and carries me somewhere I've never travelled. I sit down to listen to this with my earphones on and enter a new world. Absolutely mesmerizing. Haunting. Dreamlike. Beautiful beyond description. I'm going to move into this album and live in it till further notice.

Writer/director Robert Altman's predilection for complex character studies has focused a jaundiced eye on everything from Nashville to the fashion industry. Here the director explores the interactions of a contemporary ballet troupe, set to a diverse pop/classical score that's anything but predictable. The dominant theme that runs throughout is the American songbook staple "My Funny Valentine," given four distinctly different idiomatic turns here by Elvis Costello, Chet Baker, the Kronos Quartet, and the piano/cello duet of Marvin Laird and Clay Ruede. The remaining source tracks range from the expected classical roots (Bach and Saint-Saens) to Twin Peaks vocal icon Julee Cruise and the world music of Light Rain, but it's left to veteran songwriter/composer/arranger Van Dyke Parks to weave those disparate influences together in his orchestral score, a task the included excerpts argue he's accomplished with typical wit and considerable charm. --Jerry McCulley

Good CD.......2007-01-09
If you have seen the movie, this CD includes all the songs from all the dances in the movie. I'm a dance teacher, and this CD has been used in my classes many, many times.
Could have been great.......2005-02-14
This CD follows the all-to-common practice of presenting a dozen of the "most marketable" pieces, leaving off the more unique music. Where is the great electronic composition from the beginning, the wonderful practice piano music, and the other instrumental selections? A complete soundtrack, given courage and dedication by the CD producers, would be more unique, engrossing, and worth owning than this selection.
where is the electronic song.......2004-11-04
The sound track is great... but where is the song at the beggining of the movie? That strange electronic song? If anyone knows who did that song please email me! Thomasology@yahoo.com
"My Funny Valentine takes center stage ~ Rodgers & Hart".......2004-03-03
From director Robert Altman we have the ultimate ballet film "The Company", featuring Nerve Campbell, Malcolm McDowell, James Franco, Barbara Robertson, William Dick and actual members of Joffrey Ballet. Very effective camera work captures the poise and brilliance of the ensemble during their key ballet performances.
One of my all time favorite songs by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart "MY FUNNY VALENTINE", is presented in four different performances ~ in this order we have Elvis Costello, Chet Baker (a classic interpretation by a very talented young artist at the peak of his career), Marvin Laird (piano) and Clay Ruede (cello), Kronos Quartet ~ brings to the fold popular and classical performers ~ each approaching this standard cue with all melodic magic they can muster.
Stand outs in my book is "CURTAIN CALLS" and "BLUE SNAKE & ZEBRAS", both composed by Van Dyke Parks with extraordinary orchestration and counter parts ~ "THE WORLD SPINS", from composers Angelo Badalmenti and David K. Lynch, performed by Julee Cruise is intoxicating and thrlling, with no hangover ~ let's mention "MENUETT" (J.S. Bach) and "APPALACHIA WALTZ" (Mark O'Connor), performed by the one and only renown cello player who is recognized world wide, Yo-Yo Ma ~ "RABEKIN" (Russ Guthier), wonderful cue that rings so true for the film, a meaningful fantasy instrumental, blending Middle Eastern rhythms from world fusion group, Light Rain...gotta love it!

a personal experience.........2007-03-04
i saw this band live in progue a few years ago.. the first time i heard this album it had an effect on me.. i borrowed from a friend to copy but instead i just listened to it repeatadly knowing that i would have to buy it.. i went to europe a year or so later and ended up in progue.. knowing the ladaaba was from the baltic region i googled them and found they were playing in a venue only a few miles away from where i was staying in the coming days..
i will never forget the performance.. it brought tears to my eyes.. the beauty of it.. this is the last night of your life.. what will you do? try to take your riches with you or dance!?
Moving........2002-03-17
Boris Kovac & Ladaaba Orchest are from Yugoslavia. Ladaaba stands for La Danza Apocalypsa Balcanica.
The songs, as a whole, have a feeling of last moment, a feeling of something important terminating. This is the music of the last party. On "Begin-ing", we are asked "to imagine there is only one starry night left till the end of the world... What would we do?" Really, I don't know. What would I do? What would you do? Something did terminate but not everything. The last song takes us on a new journey to a vague destination. Maybe for the better, maybe for the worse, but all is not terminated.
These Balkan tangos are, I don't know how to say it otherwise, they are important. They got here just in time. They have tastes of tango, gypsy music, avant-garde jazz and rumba. There is a good measure of energy and hope, along with the bittersweet sadness.
It has been a long time since I bought a CD with that much integrity and sense of completness.

Product Description
...International award winning composer, Fahir Atakoglu is a much-esteemed composerand pianist in Europe and Turkey, in the fields of large symphonic works and film music. His works have also been performed in various music festivals in Europe and across The United States to much acclaim. This CD called IF marks an interesting departure for him. Instead of a ninety piece orchestra, his music here is performed by only three musicians, and what a fabulous trio it is! Fahirs playing and his harmonic and original rhythmic sense in his compositions, electrifies the musical atmosphere throughout. The legendary bassist Anthony Jackson is superb as always, so is drum virtuoso, Grammy winner Horacio El Negro Hernandez. Saxophonist Donny McCaslin plays beautifully on two numbers. The drumming that is Horacios own, together Anthonys tone that has been his signature for nearly two decades, and the groups unique grooves of Turkish melodic and rhythmic motifs, makes this album a one of a kind collectors item, a must have
ARIF MARDIN Producer, Composer, Arranger. This document is edited from the Albums (CD-FH12005) notes.
Customer Reviews:
Your ears and your heart will appreciate this album.......2005-08-24
What an amazing group of musicians!!! Fahir Atakoglu is a well-known musician in Europe, it was time for him to conquer the US music markets. This is one of those albums, you know, the rare ones that you keep playing for years and years. These musicians are simply genious people, and they know how to show this by touching your heart. Stop reading these comments and go and buy this album immediately. If you are like me, I know you will appreciate it.
alig .......2005-08-22
Having been recording in Europe & Turkey for over 20 years, Fahir is finally recording in the USA. Jackson and Hernadez are serious players, and have given Fahir the good exposure he deserves. Fahir's music has been a part of our lives, souls and dreams for years. Believe it or not, I was surprised to hear Fahir's music as the opening act at a wedding in Medellin, Colombia this August. This guy is an incredible talent. His music has an international appeal with the ability to reach people's hearts. Way to go Fahir!
Excellent !.......2005-08-20
...Wow!!! ; I have never heard this guy before but he sure can play his piano!!His melodies are amazing...His Turkish side really shows in the 3rd track Anadoluo. Fahir's comping on the left hand ,the pulse is so very very much in sync with the Drummer!that it gives listener an overwhelming pleasure and with Anthony Jackson the poly-rithm in all of the compositions are sooo original that I praise this album .. a very BIG AWESOME!!!
I believe pianists, bass players and drummers can "LEARN" a lot from this album!!
I am looking forward to hearing them live ;
you got a FAN!!
not too sure yet..........2005-07-21
...what to make of this record.
I just can't help it,but I feel that this album does not really breathe as well as it could.A lot of clustered left hand voicings from the piano may well be a contributing factor. That the rhythm playing feelsa little hectic (to me anyhow)is another point. And although there is a lot of soloing in the piano,as well as it may be executed,i feel that there is a lack of direction.as a bottom line i got to say, that the pianoplaying really does not touch me all that much.
The rhythm-section however really helps. The bass especially is highly dynamic. The use of the expression pedal much complements the overall picture. At times however gem-like moments in the bass department(of which there are MANY) are a little quiet against the piano.Mind you ,this is a PIANO TRIO record. As to the drums; i really enjoy what is going on there too.apropriately busy.
On the whole;i like this record, although I doubt it will become a favourite,as I am not sure the compositions are of the kind that makes me want to keep on listening through the whole album. One or two pieces at a time, yes, but perhaps not the whole cd.They do not make me alert in a way that some others do,as i miss a sense of clarity and concept(having said that,i have not spent all that much time with the cd as yet-affore mentioned reasons-)-this is of course mostly a taste issue. For rhythm section enthusiasts, and especially basspeople, this will be a very interesting disc to listen to.

Great CD.......2007-03-22
I haven't listened to Kenton since I was a kid in the 70's and 80's when I played trombone at school. My dad had a stack of Kenton vinyl. It was great to purchase this on cd and listen to MacArthur Park and hey Jude again along with the rest of the music. I still get chills everytime I listen to MacArthur Park. Awesome musicianship! I was just a very young kid in 1970. It would have been great to have seen this concert in person.
As AMAZING now as it was then.......2006-06-26
This is classic Kenton of 1970. As a college music student who heard this concert live, I am as amazed now as I was then. The band knew their musical fan audience and really "put out" for them with some of Kenton's finest performers, Willie Maiden, Quinn Davis, Dick, Shearer, Warren Gale, and great arrangements by Dee Barton, Willie Maiden, Bill Holman and Ken Hanna. This recording is a must for any Kenton fan.
WOW!!!.......2003-04-12
The Hey Jude sax solo will blow your mind!! There are not that many notes on the horn! How did he kick it up that high?
All I have to say is WOW!! This CD kicks butt!
The One & Only.......2003-02-21
This is Kenton & Band at their finest. The audience is composed of jazz student musicians and their instructors. The profession- als out-do themselves in this University setting to demonstrate what true Kenton jazz can be. This is a must for any Kenton fan.
Aging but still exciting.......2002-03-04
I have loved this album/CD for 30 years. OK, so it is aging a bit awkwardly and Stan was trying to look "with it" with Hey Jude. Still it is exciting and has the rich sounds of the Kenton orchestra. I especially enjoy McArthur Park with unusual lyrics but gorgeous voicings. Kenton in the 70's. I think you'll enjoy if you are a true Kenton fan.
