Night-Night Lullabies
Editorial Reviews
From Parents' Choice®
The sweetness in this sojourn into the Land of Nod occasionally errs on the sticky side, but that's a small flaw in a stand-out work by a notable group of artists, each with a singular style: Mary Jane Alm, Lee Blaske, Pat Frederick, Tab Laven, Kathy Mueller, Mark Mueller and Scott "Scooter" Nelson. "Wonderful Land of Dreams," by Kathy Mueller, is a stunning highlight. "Lost in a Dream," is a transporting fantasy by Laven: a child, "lying under the branch of the old willow tree," imagines soaring into the sky, becoming the wind: "I'd make my home the top of the trees; I'd whistle down the mountains, make white caps on the seas..." Laven also performs "Ship of Dreams", a tropical, instrumental sway, in which children can go to sea and "catch a breeze on a sleepy ocean, where dreams and imagination fill your sails." "Lullaby Love", by C. Decker Velie, Nelson and Mark Mueller, is a symphony of pop harmonies interwoven with "Brahm's Lullaby". "Beautiful Baby," by Nelson and Steven C. Anderson, tends toward the sugary side of pop. Blaske's instrumental versions of traditional tunes-"Hey Diddle Diddle," "Goodnight Ladies," and "Day is Done"--are luminous. Parents' Choice Gold Award. (Lynne Heffley, Parents' Choice, 1998)

The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? You've heard of mind control, haven't you? --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
Soothing, calming and still works after 11 years!.......2007-05-09
I bought this for my newborn daughter and she has fallen asleep to this just about every night of her life. In particular, we enjoy the 2 Brazilian songs as I am Portuguese (born there, raised here) and it's immensely enjoyable hearing songs in my native tongue as well as other languages. I have gifted this to several expectant parents and everyone loves it as much as I do. I highly recommend this CD.
Wonderful product.......2007-03-08
The songs on this CD are soothing and fantastic. My son loved them!
Good for babies, but a little depressing for adults........2007-02-12
The music is all good, but several of the songs are eerily reminiscent of the Schindler's List soundtrack.
highly recommended.......2006-12-30
we used this before our first arrived (to acquaint her with the music and hopefully create a positive association for her) and played it every night as part of her bed time routine. i fell asleep to the music as well as i could hear it on the monitor from her room. i can't describe how much i loved listening to the tracks and how good i feel about the success of our nightly routine. we keep the music on the ipod for "sleepy music" while traveling in the car. my now 4 year old daughter with "request" the CD when she is tired! i often give this as a baby shower gift.
Puts the entire family to sleep!!!!.......2006-11-14
I purchased On a Starry Night before our son was born. My husband listened to it and liked it so much that he started using it at bedtime himself. When we went into the hospital to deliver, the CD came with us. All of the nurses commented on how serene the music made our room feel. We've played it for our 2 month old son since birth. My entire family falls asleep this CD each night. It works so well, I don't know what the last few tracks sound like. This will be baby shower goft to all of my friends!!!

Just as adult authors from Isabel Allende to Clive Barker are writing kids' books these days, rock & roll artists (remember Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's 1993 recording Not for Kids Only?) are reaching out to the younger set. Thank goodness, we say... and scoot over, Barney. Festival Five Records is the children's music label founded by Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, where he hopes to capture "the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance." His third CD release, Night Time! ("a musical cool-down disc for all ages underground"), comes on the heels of Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance. Here, traditional tunes such as the West Indian sea shanty "Pay Me My Money Down" and the African American folk song "Down by the Riverside" take their place next to folksy, hypnotic Zanes originals, including "Night Owl," "Firefly," and "Linger for Awhile," a song aimed to reflect Brooklyn stoop life. Mandolins, harmonicas, trombones, fiddles, electric guitars (and more!) add to the contagious buoyancy of this eclectic 16-track CD. Our favorite is "Rattlin' Bog," a delightfully nonsensical cumulative song, led by Father Goose and featuring the kids in the Dandelion Chorus. As in his other CDs, Zanes invites friends and family to join the fun, along with heavy-hitters such as Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, and Dar Williams. This irresistible collection, appealing to toddlers and easy on their parents, is packaged in a colorful board book illustrated by Donald Saaf with starry scenes of moonlit music making. An excellent addition to any children's music library. --Karin Snelson
Customer Reviews:
Different from House Party.......2007-05-14
I ordered this CD along with Dan Zanes House Party CD. My daughter loves the fun songs from the House Party CD better than the Night Time CD. I can't get her to listen to the slow songs on this cd although I really enjoy them.
We love this cd.......2007-02-11
This is in our babies room. Each night when we get ready for bed we listen to this cd. It winds her down a little and makes diaper changing a little more easier for us.
children's music.......2006-10-29
This music is mainly for children but some adults will find something to like about it, too. The music is diverse and creative. Children are sure to like it if you play it for them. Of course, it's hard getting children to listen to music if they don't want to, but give it time and I'm sure they will enjoy this collection of songs.
great music!.......2006-08-05
Our 22 mo. old loves this music much more than the kiddy tunes that mom and dad can hardly bear to listen to.
Dan Zanes Nightime is "Happy Music".......2006-07-27
I was introduced to the Dan Zanes Nightime CD while I was visiting my 3 1/2 year old grandson. He listens to it everynight before going to sleep with "Pay Me You Owe Me" being his single favorite song. I fell in love with the CD because each time I play it I can vividly recall the pleasure it gave us both. The choice of songs on the CD gives all ages something to remember and before you know it you will be singing and dancing along with the music.

Great CD.......2007-06-14
Great music, soothing, calming and perfect for bedtime quality time.
Mellow, Sleepy, Wonderful.......2005-10-27
I bought this CD for myself, a 60 year old. I have trouble sleeping and have been buying CDs by this company. They are all wonderful. I'm asleep in about 15 minutes!
Soothing Bach.......2005-04-29
It would probably help to first clear up a potential misconception in the unfortunate subtitle which refers to "lullabies" - a term that brings to mind for most people simplistic, sing-songy music hummed to babies in a crib. Lullabies are wonderful and have their place, but the music on the CD is not this (and Bach would probably have cringed a bit at the thought of his music here being called "lullabies.") What is here is a most wonderful, high-quality collection of Bach's Baroque music that is most condusive to creating a quiet, peaceful mood. The selections here include many famous pieces from Bach played by an impressive, all-star line up of notable musicians. Some listeners might take comfort in knowing that all selections have a similar, gentle tempo and mood without those unwanted changes in loudness from soft to LOUD that can startle one (the baby?) from sleep or quiet contemplation. The sound quality is good for the purpose of this collection - to provide relaxing background music or Rx for insomnia. I listen to this CD often if I wake up at night.
Johan Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a devout German Lutharan who devoted much of his life to composing music for various church functions and events in his position of 'head music master" in his different appointments. As such, we see often in Bach's music a "pastoral" quality - whose effect is to encourage, comfort and renew the spirit. No piece (and title) is more demonstrating of this quality then the opening "Sheep May Safely Graze" which is perhaps the finest recording of this magnificant and comforting piece by the Stuttgart Orchestra who brings a most expressive quality to the music. Its inter-weaving and delicate melodies give rise to serene visions of carefree green pastures and the sense that all is well. So, perhaps in that vein, this music has some commonality to traditional lullabies.
But, even though the music is serene, there is much musically to hear in these tunes - for those still awake. Bach's genius is seen here for setting a lyrical solo instrument (violin, oboe, cello) against a stable, comforting background orchestra pulsing away in Bach fashion. Many of these works are a typical style of Bach music known as "fugues" - which is a type of music where two-three instruments simultaneously play different melodies that all blend together in splendid harmony. This consistent, calming rhythm with gently soaring melodies are part of what makes such music suitable for bedtime. Finally, one who is just nodding off can appreciate that the last two selections are the most peaceful with the fewest notes coming from the solo guitar of Pepe Romero. They end in a whisper which should be right about the time you fall asleep and the CD player quietly clicks off. This is a really wonderful compilation of Bach's music that should be pleasing to both those just looking for some nice, relaxing music - or even to the long-term classical collector who already has 30 CD's of Bach's music but values the variety and soothing qualities of such 'even-temperament' collections.
Great for kids!.......2001-11-29
I bought this CD for my daughter when she turned six. It's been a year and she still listens to it a lot. Yes, she also listens to Britney and Christina, but on many nights she will request Bach (aka: that one with no words). It's great to know that they selected soothing, relaxing pieces. It's a wonderful way to broaden my daughter's horizons while also getting her to sleep.
My Kind of Bedtime.......2001-10-17
This CD is lovely and soothing, and I have to take exception to R. Loam's contention that the entire CD is in the minor key. I can determine from listening to the samples that certainly #1 and #5 are in the major key, and there are probably more. The minor key does not have to invoke meloncholia - it is many times in the eyes of the beholder.

Customer Reviews:
dark and beautiful.......2007-06-28
i had this album and lost it. i had to buy it again,it is so great.
Something is Out There.......2007-01-12
Yes, something is out there in the dark of the night. Mystical creatures from the days of yore where such creatues might have existed among humans. Soothing music shall transport you to this charming realm. Simply place the CD in your player and dream... best if used at night while you attempt to sleep. Sweet dreams.
Beautiful CD.......2006-11-13
This is one of my favorite CDs, both for use as a Reiki practitioner in my sessions, and for my own listening pleasure.
For All Who Would Not Suffer From Reality.......2005-04-24
I have an automatic, knee jerk relax response to Singh Kaur's voice. This dates back to my first discovery of her series of chants done on the independent
Invincible label with Kim Robertson on harp. This Crimson collection is the closest thing to 'healing music that I have ever heard. Unfortunately, the set has to be sought out or ordered, and many people simply have never heard what is one of the most powerful voices in new age music.
So it was with some delight that I discovered this collection done under Gary Stadler's aegis. Now albums entitled anything like 'Fairy night Songs' are almost guaranteed to put me off. I'm a new age music fan, but I don't think that cute titles do the genre any favors. Fortunately, despite the title, the music on this album is serious and the magic of Singh Kaur's voice quickly brushes aside any quibbles one might have with Stadler's branding.
In short order this has become a 'reach for' album when I get home after work in that fuzzy, edgy mood which happens when I forget to leave work behind and let the day fall away on the way back. I can feel a smile start as soon as the laser hits 'Fairy Ring.' By the time I get to the closing 'Spark in the Night,' which is a recasting of 'Guru Ram Das' from the Crimson set, the spell is complete - somehow, inside, you have returned to a semblance of balance. Singh Kaur saves Marc from the padded room once again.
Peaceful.......2004-11-11
This CD far exceeded my expectations of relaxing music. So much of the "new age" music bores you to tears after 3 songs. Gary Stadler's CDs (I own 2 & plan to purchase more) are original and sparkle with creativity and mood. Lisa G

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. This album every bit as accomplished as the book. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2007-02-14
I love this CD. It's very well-done, and the approach is different than most children's CDs - very refined, yet soothing. I don't get tired of listening to it the way I do others -- which is important when trying to get a little one to sleep! I highly recommend it and the companion book.
Simple and sweet songs.......2006-04-02
With just piano, violin and vocals, this is a simple and heartfelt album. Ms. Baird's voice conveys the full emotions that a mother feels for her new baby with clean and open singing. The first track in particular, "All Through The Night," still makes me teary. I played this in the hospital when my son was born, and we use it as part of our wind-down ritual. I do agree that some of the songs are a little upbeat for bedtime. We just skip those in the evening (using iTunes).
Marvellous cd, enchanting music.......2005-10-18
Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there is time to savour each song or piece, and yet each lasts only two or three minutes. The three diverse yet complementary singers, each with a tender and gentle presence suiting the subject matter, give a sense of a 19th century family musical evening. Magical.
Good if you want to sing from the book but can't read music.......2004-02-10
I bought this solely because I have the book and wanted to sing the lullabies to my kids, but I can't read music. For this purpose it is fine. The songs are not in the same order as in the book but I can deal. As a stand-alone lullaby CD I wouldn't really recommend it--the songs are not sung in a soothing manner, there's lots of variety in tempo and volume, some are even sung up-beat. The voices are not pitched high enough for babies either. That being said, I am back on Amazon today to buy it for my sister who is due any day now with her 3rd kid--we both like to sing and have the book, and songs (in book or music form) are a great present that the baby won't grow out of for a long time, and helps you bond with your little one too.
Didn't like the voice........2002-12-11
I bought this cd to go with the book and it is very frustrating because the songs on this cd are not even in the same order as the book. The singing voice fluctuates too much, it will be really soft and then it gets really high pitch. And if you have the volume set at a lower level for some songs then you can't hear other songs. I think there are better cds to buy than this one.

Album Description
This collection of lullabies based on traditional Jewish music is truly a gem. It is filled with the spirit and beauty of these familiar songs, and yet transformed into a soothing contemporary journey into the land of dreams. Both listeners who know these songs and those who have never heard them before will be moved by the gentle simplicity of the instrumentation. Even more important, the CD is perfectly suited for playing at bedtime - peaceful and relaxing to a child's ears. The pleasingly hypnotic arrangements are a testament to producer Tor Hyams' eclectic background. He has succeeded in bringing the modern influences of pop music together with stately chamber music flourishes in a way that honors the traditional melodies of these timeless songs and prayers.

Peaceful and soothing.......2006-11-14
My daughter (only half Jewish) is listening to this every night now. She loves it and is actually getting to sleep faster than ever. I don't know if that's because of the CD or not, but for the sake of this review, let's say it is. Either way, it is very calming and nice to the ears. Highly recommended.
Jewish babies need to hear this.......2006-09-26
Why not have you children mellow out to Jewish tunes? Early cultural imprinting? Inspiration for harried working parents... I can tell you... this beautiful CD works for me.

British composer Benjamin Britten's Ceremony Of Carols is an Advent staple. In Conrad Susa's Carols & Lullabies - Christmas In The Southwest, the work now has an American companion piece. Initially inspired by festive Spanish-language songs that are typically sung in Arizona, the work incorporates traditional material from Catalonia, Puerto Rico, Castile, Andalusia, and Mexico. The lush yet spirited choral settings are splendidly sung by the VocalEssence Singers and underpinned by instrumentation that, like the Britten composition, relies heavily upon the harp. But Susa has also employed a marimba, a type of xylophone often heard in Mexican and South American music, which adds a deliciously subtle ethnic coloration. The balance of the program is devoted to well-known carols in arrangements by modern American composers. The entire album is an unexpected gem that soothes, exalts and pleasures the spirit. If there is any justice, it will become a beloved seasonal staple. --Christina Roden
Album Description
From across the United States have come composers and arrangers whose work contributes to this collection of Christmas music. These are carols from around the world brought together in arrangements that reflect an inherently American diversity and spirit. From Virgil Thomson's camp meeting setting of "The Holly and the Ivy" and Steve Barnett's swing version of "Go Tell It on the Mountain" to Randall Davidson's homespun "Christ Was Born on Christmas Day" and Conrad Susa's magnificent Carols & Lullabies, commissioned from Susa specifically for VocalEssence. Maestro Brunelle has chosen carolsboth familiar and unfamiliartied to one another by their inventiveness, charm and beauty in one of the year's most exciting new holiday discs.

Diversity in Christmas Traditions.......2005-10-25
It is getting more difficult each Christmas Season to find discs that offer Christmas choral music that is infused with a sense of "rootedness" borne out of time-hewn tradition and at the same time compliments--rather than rehashes--the existing repertoire of age-old Christmas choral music.
This is one of those rare discs that accomplishes this difficult task of offering a different approach to Christmas choral without slipping into the secular/contemporary (which usually strips all meaning and "rootedness" from Christmas). It does so by continuing to mine selections from Christmas traditions; however, the traditions are beyond the historical milieu of Olde Europe.
At least half the selections here hail from Hispanic origins. If I know anything about Hispanic culture (not much, but I live in the American Southwest), it is nothing if not traditional and rooted, yet passionate and alive.
If you are looking for a Christmas disc that can compliment (i.e., blend with but not duplicating) existing Christmas choral traditions, this is a "must-have" disc for your Christmas collection.
To be sure, several of the tracks are from the European Christmas choral traditions. But even these are executed with
