5 out of 5 stars It's in the fine print.......2007-03-28

First off, I admit I'm not a sophisticated music critic. I enjoy many different artists and styles, but I simply don't have the vocabulary to describe them meaningfully. Thus, most of this will review will focus on Taylor's lyrics.

And wow, what a thing to focus on. Steve Taylor creates the funniest and most piercing satire I've heard in a long time. Not content to sit pretty on our "good Christians" position, Taylor targets both the Church and the non-Christian world.

The opening track is a confessional by certain Desmond R.G. Underwood Frederick IV about his shortly approaching death, backed by driving hard rock. Desmond (etc. etc.) has been very active in self-help and inner healing, but finds everything cut distressingly short. What good does all of this do him, as the chorus reminds: "Freddy, get ready to meet your maker."

"Smug", another of the jewels on this album, is about depressingly self-righteous people freely scattered about the church today. Instead of loving people and showing them the way to God, Taylor charges that many churches seem bent on creating more people just as stuck-up as they are. Despite all of this, he admits, some people are able to find their way, "Hey, get off your knees/ that part don't come till later./ God will not be pleased."

"Jesus Is for Losers" is a title bound to shock anyone who thought they were picking up a Christian album. Turning Ted Turner's comment on its head, Taylor admits that yes, Jesus is for people who are completely helpless and desperately in need. This quietly introspective tune is an appropriate follow-up to "Smug" as Taylor admits his own pride and how he repeatedly needs to be reoriented to God. "Just as I am./ I am stiff-necked and proud./ Jesus is for losers./ Why do I still play to the crowd?" As he says, if you're strong and self-sufficient, turn somewhere else. Jesus is for those who know they need him.

Taylor finishes up the album with the ridiculous, yet pointed "Cash Cow". Over a weird musical background (I could picture They Might Be Giants performing this), Taylor warns of the dangers of materialism. He carefully points out that even if you're not rich, you can still easily fall victim to greed. He wraps the song up with the admission: "I too was hypnotized/ by those big cow eyes/ the last time I uttered/ those three little words:/ 'I deserve better!'"

To keep this review short, I've skipped over several fantastic songs. If you have even the slightest interest in modern Christian music, you should pick this album up. Steve Taylor is one of the greats of the field, and this is his best work. Although he's done many wonderful things since, I'll always regret the day he stopped working as a performing artist.

5 out of 5 stars The kind of Christian music we need..........2003-07-11

This is one of the best albums I own, and that's saying quite a bit. Steve Taylor is a bit like combining the conviction of Keith Green with the satire of the Simpsons, and I think this is his best album. The production values are above his previous releases, and the songs don't sound musically so dated. But through the surface silliness of songs like "Cash Cow" and "The Lament of...etc. etc." comes powerful messages for the church of America to repent and the people of America to realize the empty philosophies they've invested in. Taylor even turns the satire on himself in "Sock Heaven", my least favorite track. Silly but never without a point, honest without being rude or sarcastic, Steve Taylor writes the kind of music Christians need--songs that probe deep and avoid cliches. I think The Finish Line is the most moving prodigal son type story I've ever heard (after Keith Green's Prodigal Son suite), Jesus is For Losers is as honest and blunt a portrayal of an oft-missing part of the gospel as you'll find, Bannerman manages to be both silly and respectful. Get this album, and get it now.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the Faint of Heart (or Mind)!!.......2003-03-07

Steve Taylor challenges his listeners' minds, as well as their hearts, through his sarcastic, biting, and direct lyrics. His "heavier" musical styles on many of these songs make this a challenging CD, also. Taylor is funny, spiritually concious, and not afraid to put his message "in your face." This CD is relentless, from "The Lament. . ." right through "Cash Cow." "Sock Heaven," "Jesus is for Losers"--don't let the title fool you--and "Easy Listening." Taylor doesn't let you catch your breath, so don't even try. Pay attention and be ready to be challenged--maybe even shocked. Taylor doesn't mince words and doesn't mind making people feel very spiritually uncomfortable. His intentions are good, and, if you take his words to heart, your spiritual life can/will improve. He has been doing cutting edge work like this for years, going all the way back to his early albums (I WANT TO BE A CLONE, et al), and many have dismissed him as being crazy, fringe, or inappropriate. Don't let the sarcasm turn you off to his message . . .

Tell me ... what's better than great music from the minds of intelligent artists? Like, for instance, Aaron Weiss of passion-rock mewithoutYou, or the boys of hardcore Norma Jean, or the 3 youngsters from hip-hop's Lightheaded, Don Chaffer is flat out a genius of a creative mind ... and deep.

"Sink or Swim" is so meaningful ... a folk rock faith masterpiece ... and this "You Are So Good to Me" is its change-of-pace equivalent. Lori Chaffer is Don's perfect complement, fabulous alter-voice.

Nothing really against regular bands, singing regular lyrics, and playing familiar patterns ... but I like my brain to be wow-ed ... and I appreciate the music of brilliantly creative people. Waterdeep's music is beautiful, passionate, intricately orchestrated, and mind-blowing all at the same time!

Thanks, Don & Lori!

    5 out of 5 stars insyderz, indeed.......2004-04-10

After reading some other reviews, I thought I would give a more accurate, informative one.
I first heard the Insyderz when my friend burned me skalleluia too. I was already hooked. When I bought this album, it made me so happy. This is the best insyderz album out there. It is much better than skalleluia too, because there's less experimenting and the music is better. If you're a fan of good ska, don't hesistate to get this album. This album is amazing and full of musically advanced songs. The horns are stellar and this album can cheer you up anytime. THIS IS REAL MUSIC. Worship is 20 times as good with the insyderz. good stuff.

    4 out of 5 stars Skalleluia.......2002-04-28

I first ran across some Insyderz MP3s while trying to find some MxPx (a long time fan). The first track I ever heard from them was "In The Secret" and I was hooked. These guys do some great stuff with the classic songs that we grew up singing in church and at camps and retreats. Lord, I Lift Your Name on High gives us both sides - a nice traditional version and then jumps into a real ska/punk version of the song. Draw Me Close is practically reggae, but it keeps you interested in Jesus.

    Why 4 stars?:
These guys do some great work with making some of our favorite songs a ska/punk classic. These will keep your toes tapping while your praying and are just good, clean fun. Plus, these guys really know how to rock! I just wish this disc had more songs on it!

5 out of 5 stars Singn' praise was never so fun!.......2002-01-20

This album rocks to heaven! If you like first-class Christian ska then you've got to get this CD. You'll be amazed to hear the rockn' ska twist to songs that you've heard for years in church. It includes gutsy hard-rock hits as well as dancable praise numbers. A great way to liven up your worship time or any social gathering.

From old-time favorites like "O Lord You're Beautiful" to a truly romping version of "Awesome God", The Insyderz sport a unique blend of ska and rock whitch I've never heard done better. Get ready to sing "Skalleluia"!

5 out of 5 stars Prayer is fun again!.......2001-10-22

This CD is like praying while listening to a cleaned up Limp Bizkit. It's great! I pop it in, sing along, and know that I'm praising God AND having a good time. BUY THIS NOW

5 out of 5 stars SKA-CORE PRAISE & WORSHIP! WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR?.......2001-05-30

This album absolutely rules! Not only is it great ska-core music but it's all cover songs of everybodys favorite praise & worship songs. Just to let you know this album does combine different influences like punk, reggae, and even a litle of the 50's music. This is a very cool album by a very cool band. Check out all the insyderz albums. They all rock.

Not only is Roaring Lambs packed with fine artists, it has vision, superior quality, and brand-new, unreleased songs. The disc is a companion piece to the late Emmy Award-winning television producer Bob Briner's respected, thought-provoking book Roaring Lambs, which challenges Christians to get out from behind the church walls and become culture-shaping influences in society at large. With songs that are based on and in response to this book, musicians who were influenced by Briner have joined together to sustain his challenge. These artists, well respected for their creative integrity, have each already brought their work beyond the Christian subculture and into mainstream society. With old-timers like Steve Taylor and the cutting-edge band Delirious, the result is some of the best Christian music to date. Catchy, innovative, and diverse, this project hits its mark, raising the standard for Christian musicians and culture-shapers everywhere. --Israel Button

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent "odds-and-ends" compilation of Christian bands.......2005-07-05

First of all, I have not read the "Roaring Lambs" book to which this album is a companion, as I am going strictly on what I heard on the CD.

"Roaring Lambs" (12 tracks, 49 min., released in 2000) brings music of some of my all time favorite bands. The highlights for me are Over the Rhine's "Goodbye", an outstanding evocative song that would appear one year later on OtR's "Films for Radio" album (still their best album to date). Then there is Sixpence None the Richer's "The Ground You Shook", an introverted gentil song from Matt Slocum and Leigh Nash (this track would later be included on "The Best of Sixpence None the Richer, released in 2004). Then there is Bill Mallonnee & Vigilantes of Love's "Wondering Where the Lions Are", an excellent cover of the 1979 Bruce Cockburn song. Those three songs alone are worth the price of the CD as such. Other good songs are the contributions of Ashley Cleveland & Michael Tait, Steve Taylor (not to be confused with Aerosmith's Steve Tyler), and Burlap to Cashmere.

When this album came out in 2000, it didn't garner much attention, which is a pity. While there is some filler, there is a LOT of great music on here, punctuated by the last three tracks on the album, by Over the Rhine, Bill Mallonnee and Sixpence. You can probably get this for a few dollars in the used bin store or here on Amazon, and it's absolutely worth that.

2 out of 5 stars Not Worth It.......2005-07-03

Most reviewers mention how they eagerly anticipated this CD, since there are so many great artists contributing. I also had high hopes for it, since a few of the artists are among my favorites. So I was actually shocked at how mediocre it is, and how even the contributions of my favorite musicians seemed dull and lifeless. It is as if they asked some of the greatest Christian bands to give them the worst song they ever recorded, and then put them all into a compilation. This CD is not worth your time or money. If you want a good mix of contemporary Christian artists, a WOW mix would be a better choice.

4 out of 5 stars More Than We Want to Handle.......2005-02-13

I hear listeners complain- and I often agree- that CCM music is too much fluff and not enough substance, that you could just as easily insert the word "baby" for "Jesus" to secularize the song, and no one would know the difference. With that said, the responses to this album seem to indicate that when we are presented with a work of greater depth and thought, it remains on the back of the shelf gathering dust. Listeners complain that it wasn't what they expected, that it wasn't their usual, easily digested fluffy mix. They want a solution, but they don't like working through the answer. This album is an incredible, eclectic mix from talented writers and musicians who bring more to the table than a pre-made batch for trend-chasing success. The lyrics feature inspired metaphors with thought-provoking depth, but it takes a little more attention and contemplation to truly enjoy the layers of this album than would your average CCM pop piece. This is a work of great subtlety and taste, but it is not for easy listening.

I very much enjoyed "Daisies and Roses" by Burlap to Cashmere's Stephen Delopoulos and "Headstrong" by Jars of Clay both for their beauty and for their slight tilt from each of the bands' usual sounds. "Daisies and Roses" has a slightly more folk-colored appeal, very characteristic of Mr. Delopoulos's personal release "Me Died Blue." "Headstrong" is in a sense a pre-cursor to the sound of Jars' more recent release "Who We Are Instead." The refreshing and excellently executed rhythm and vocals of "Akehlulek Ubaba" is a great highlight of the album.

There were only a couple of mild disappointments from line up that is, on the whole, stellar. Ginny Owens displayed a much lower level of instrumental sophistication than on her personal releases. "Out There" by Mr. Smith and Mr. Chapman was a very easy, extremely mellow, and on the whole uninspired piece. I have heard far better work from each of them, particularly on some of there earlier releases, so there does not seem to be any accounting for this anomaly.

On the whole, an excellent compilation for someone weary of the average, run-of-the-mill CCM fare. Add a little bit of eclectic, spiritually sound spice to your collection with this album.

      3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2004-04-27

You can split this cd into two parts, kind of like Jekyll and Hyde. The one side is the generic CCM standard, and the second side being the more obscure and higher quality tracks.

The two sides, thankfully are pretty even. Throw away Jars of Clay, Ashley Cleveland (who would have done a better job without Tait's "assistance"), SCC & Smitty, PFR, and Deliriou5? right away. Boring songs. But perhaps your average CCM fan would enjoy?

For me, there are three standout tracks worthy of attention. First, the Steve Taylor track. It's quirky like fans have come to expect, and since he is more or less retired from performing, a surprise. The Ladysmith Black Mambazo track is a refreshing change from the pace with it's African vocal arrangements. And the Over the Rhine track is also quality with it's meandering piano and the majestic vocals of Karin Bergquist.

Sixpence None The Richer delivers what fans have come to expect from them, a solid pop tune with Leigh Nash's trademark angelic vocals. While some people complain at the song's difference from their self titled cd, this is hardly surprising considering that Sixpence has been a band to evolve and not meld to any preconceptions. I give the song two thumbs up.

Also enjoyable was the Bill Mallonee & VOL track. I can understand why that track isn't very popular amoung reviewers. If you're not into their alt.country sound, you won't like the track.

The other two songs are ok. Ginny Owens has her moments, and the Burlap song is good, but doesn't quite touch some of the material from the full length.

Three stars for the killer, but there is, indeed, too much filler.

      2 out of 5 stars no good.......2002-11-08

this is like an example of ccm just trying to put out a cd to get a few bucks. There are only like two good songs on here which i cant really even remember...and the rest of the cd goes down hill. maybe some of them would be fine if they the artist keep it on their cd...but just all the songs were slow and not that intresting to save the cd.
