Tom Chapin, the younger brother of singer/songwriter Harry, has made a stealthy career out of creative children's music. He writes tunes that are lyrically charming, musically fetching, and altogether fun. Even with a string of recordings as impressive as his, Zag Zig is the best. It incorporates Chapin's fondness for intricate horn charts (on the Latin-tinged "Vitamin Si") and his quirky, memorably humorous lyrics on "Backwards Birthday Party." Best of all, the lyrics aren't simply silly: Each song passes on a narrative strand, however brief, that helps kids as young as 2 years old remember turns of phrase, development in a story, and more. --Andrew Bartlett

You've hit paydirt. There's just too many best hits collections. buy this CD.......2005-06-26
That's right! There's Too Many "Best Hits Collections" of these guys. At last count there were more collections of Hooter songs than original albums issued. That's just plain WAKED. I suggest buying "zig zag", "Nervous Night" and "One Way Home" via the used venue here on amazon. This way you own ALL of the great music & YOU decide what their best hits are for yourself, don't let some record industry suit do it for you.
one of my desert island cd's.......2004-09-13
In college, my friends and I used to always ask if we were stuck on a deserted island and we could only have five cd's which would they be? My list always changed, except for this album. It is one of my all time favorites. Not only is the music amazing throughout (especially in GIVE THE MUSIC BACK, among many others). YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE remains one of my all time favorite songs. The Hooters, sadly, never are recognized for their lyrics as well as their musical talents. If you were to listen to each of their albums, you would see how their lyrics improved greatly, but you would notice the amazing variety of music they produce. They put their heart and soul in each song, and it comes through brilliantly each time. Enjoy the ride.
Homecoming Music.......2004-04-12
The Hooters represent what Japanese want American rock to be like. The third album in 1989 is no exception.
The album title comes from part of the lyrics from the second track DELIVER ME. It has not been widely recognized as their sensational debut "Nervous Night" in 1985. Comparing with NERVOUS NIGHT which has shown their power pop appeal, the music in this album makes you feel more nostalgic, reminisce the old happy days and good ol' American music. Of course they do have power pop stuff just as in Nervous Night such as BROTHER DON'T YOU WALK AWAY and YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE. But the album's major appeal comes from acoustic ballads using variety of musical instruments just as Bruce Hornsby and the Range did.
HEAVEN LAUGHS, GIVE THE MUSIC BACK and ALWAYS A PLACE are just plain excellent. And their cover 500 MILES doesn't sound like cover at all.
The Hooters became almost forgotten in the U.S. But in Japan they had been really huge even during 90s and they had a number of concerts here. And I hope American will bring their music back.
Recommended for John Melencamp, Bruce Hornsby and the Range, Heuy Lewis and the News fans and American mainstream pop music fans.
Another Underrated Hooters Release..........2003-03-30
I must admit to being biased, seeing as I grew up in the Philadelphia area, and The Hooters were the first band I ever saw in concert - in a high school gym, no less. Pair that with the fact that guitarist/singer Eric Bazillian personally encouraged me to continue with my songwriting ... I'd say I'm not the most objective person about The Hooters.
But all of that notwithstanding, I still think Zig Zag was another disc that was slightly ahead of its time. Remember - Eric Bazillian, Rob Hyman, and producer Rick Chertoff were largely responsible for the Joan Osborne "Relish" album, which sounded like a Hooters album to me...
The band did always try to incorporate different influences from various musical genres (reggae, ska, folk, blues, and countless others) which may have been its undoing, sadly. How many other mid to late 80's rock bands were using mandolins, (and the occasional accordian) on a regular basis? Not too many... and I think the general population didn't know what to make of them, and were expecting them to do Nervous Night II, III, and IV - which they promptly did not do.
Anyway - "Brother Don't You Walk Away", "Give The Music Back", "Heaven Laughs", "You Never Know Who Your Friends Are" and "Beat Up Guitar" (which is a touching ode to their coming up in Philadelphia, and still gets me a little misty, even now) are great pop songs, that have a certain timelessness to them. And I have to admit "Mr. Big Baboon" is a guilty pleasure - with its cajun inspired vibe.
Pick it up, keep an open mind, and you might even find yourself enjoying it.
GREAT 3rd album from PHILLY's Heroes!!.......2001-12-05
Everyone has heard "and we danced" and even if you don't personally own a copy(from 'Nervous Night')-but dig the song-then you owe it to yourself to check out all 4 studo releases by the HOOTERS! Surely one of the most under-rated bands of the eighties-these guys deserved to be HUGE!!Excellent, intelligent 'pop-rock' songwriting by a great band!CHECK IT OUT!! You won't be sorry!!

SHOULD HAVE SOLD MILLIONS.......2006-03-20
With guest artists like BOWIE / SMITH / DAVIES this was bound to be good. It's better than that. SLICK might not be a fast finger merchant, but he's got bucket loads of taste and chooses some superb tones for his guitar. All the instrumentals are fairly simple, but after just a couple of listens, they are unforgettable and every song has a life of it's own. All the songs would be standout tracks on each guests own CD. This is an excellent collection of musik that shows the immense talent that is EARL SLICK.
A Classic.......2005-09-04
Wow the guitar work is simply amazing. The guest vocals are lots of fun. Joe Elliott of Def Leppard fame sounds dark and fun and Smith from the Cure is excellent as well!
Very good guitar music!.......2004-06-13
Hey, this music is great, reminds me a lot to Dave Stewards music style and on guestvocals heroes like Bowie (Isn't it evening')and Robert Smith from the Cure ('Believe'). Buy it please!
Amazing! One of the Best!.......2003-12-27
I found out about Earl Slick because I am a David Bowie fan, and Earl, of course is one of his guitarists. I had always thought he was an awesome guitar player and I had always wanted to hear more of his stuff. Then, I heard he had a new album, Zig Zag, coming out. I had to buy it, so I did and boy am I glad I did. One of the best CD purchases of my life. I have about 200 CDs and this one has immediately become my favorite. The first time I saw David Bowie in concert, I sat in the audience dumbstruck about how amazing his music (particularly the guitar) sounds live, and thats thanks to Earl Slick. He's one of the greatest guitarist around, don't let this album pass you up!! From beginning to end the CD is great. The guest vocalists on the CD sound great and of course... the guitar is AMAZING! thanks earl!

The mastery of Machaut.......2006-08-28
Guillaume de Machaut (c.1300-1377) was the greatest composer of the 14th century, and was notable for composing "La Messe de Notre Dame" - the first mass that was entirely attributed to one composer.
Here we have the 23 motets of Machaut. Machaut's motets, like those from others in the medieval period, are usually written in three parts:
1). The tenor: the lowest voice, which usually sings a simple, short text, with very long duration given to each syllable, similar to that of plainchant, sung slowly
2). The duplum or motetus: the middle voice, which sings a separate text. This text usually takes the form of a poem, and is more ornamented than the tenor
3). The triplum: the highest voice, which sings its own text in a highly ornamented style
Machaut's motets follow the principle of isorhythm. In essence, this means that the tenor part is repeated multiple times using the same rhythm, but the proportion of the rhythm can be altered in each repetition.
Sounds pretty complicated, doesn't it? Well, it is, and it isn't. It is complicated in the sense that three separate texts, written in old French or Latin, are sung simultaneously. Some of the motets even combine the two languages together! But the underlying beauty of Machaut melodies often beguiles the ear, making you forget all of that is taking place. However, as I have listened to the motets repeatedly, I have come to appreciate how the intricate duplum and triplum voices play off one another and contrast against the unornamented tenor line. This music really is amazing and Machaut clearly was a master. I think certain of the motets are immediately appealing for their melancholy beauty (tracks 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 on disc one, and tracks 4, 5, 11, 12 and 15 on disc two). Other tracks require more attention. Accordingly, this is a release to listen to multiple times, and in chunks. It's a bit much to fully process this music in one sitting!
The performance by Ensemble Musica Nova is outstanding, and the sound is very clear. It is evident that a lot of research went into this recording, and that great care was taken to provide the listener with an authentic experience. It should be noted that in contrast to the choral music of the Renaissance, the different voices of the ensemble do not combine to create a unified sound. Each voice is distinct, and is readily identifiable. In this performance, several of the motets are accompanied by Medieval instruments (viele, flute a bec, harp and drum), while others are purely choral. Multiple versions of certain of the motets are included. For instance, Motet 17 is presented in both an instrumental and choral version. The program notes are extremely detailed, with the original texts and English translations of the motets included.
I suspect this package will prove irrestiable to fans of medieval music, and this set can be enthusiastically recommended to that crowd. For those new to medieval music, I would recommend starting with a recording of "La Messe de Notre Dame" to get warmed up to the style. But if you are looking for a copy of Machaut's motets - this outstanding version is the one to get!

A landmark recording of Machaut's music.......2005-07-20
Machaut was born around 1300, presumably in Machaut, a village northwest of Reims. At the end of his life, poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut closely supervised the illumination of the manuscripts with his compositions. Most of these books containing an extraordinary variety of lavish miniatures can be found in the National Library of Paris. It appears that Machaut had his eye on prosterity in zealously collecting together his complete works in a manner unheard of amongst Medieval composers. The earliest of his motets can be dated to 1324. Many of them mix Latin and French texts in different voices though some are entirely in either French or Latin. In total 23 motets have been handed down to prosterity, nearly all of them are isorhythmic and they are all recorded here complete for the first time.
The Ensemble Musica Nova are part of the lively French early music scene with all of its greater expressive vibrancy and passion, that constrast markedly to the often chilly and reserved English performances. To add to the variety even more, the motets are played interspersed with alternative surviving instrumental dimunitions of the same motets that enrichen the musical experience greatly. Those accumstomed to the puritanically bland early music performances by English groups will find the results from this French group revelatory, with their exhibition of a far fuller palette of colour that recalls those rich illuminations that decorate his manuscripts. All of this helps to present a far more vigorous case for Machaut as one of the turly great composers of Western music.
The completeness and authoritativeness of the performances further extends to the use of period French pronounciation in the performances. All in all this has to be regarded as a benchmark recording for these works by a group who demonstrate deep dedication to this great composer.
Another strong added attraction of the CD is the audiophile grade quality of the recorded sound. There is good air around voices and instruments with nice spacial resolution/sound staging with voice/instrumental timbre being captured vividly. Furthermore the documentation in the cover booklet is exceptionally thorough in its discussion and documentation of textual sources, performance practice and musicological background. An additional booklet in the box provides full texts. This is another case of a lovely boutique independent recording company successfully producing a CD whose artistic and technical standards runs rings around the majors. It certainly raises great interest in the other releases by Zig Zig Territoires. Even the cover art epitomises French chic at its best.
Quite deservedly, this CD was decorated with the Diapason d'Or and the Choc de l'année 2003 - in this repetoire awards I take immeasurably more notice of than Gramophone which would have awarded it a Recording of the Year if the composer and performers were English! David Vernier for Classicstoday gave it a 10/10 review and for once I pretty much agree.
An essential CD set of music of the Ars Nova. Definitely one to grab while you can - you will be kicking yourself if you miss this one.

This disc contains some of the great works for solo percussion by the authorities in the field of contemporary music.
The performances and recording quality are both superb! Clearly all care and effort went into the recording and text however, the dual layered dvd /cd is in PAL format, and will require said player or a media transfer to see the studio footage and interview with Xenikas. Considering we spend much time searching for the "right music" to add to our collection, this disc offers ample material that holds the best this rare genra has to offer.

Astonishing.......2006-10-20
This CD really surprised me. I knew the Busoni and Brahms pieces well but this is the best rendition I've ever heard of them. Little by little you enter the eye of the storm, everything whirling around you. The Lutz was also interesting. What I found most amazing was the completely different sound Edna Stern gives to each piece. You can really feel the tension between the time of Bach, of the transcription, and nowadays; especially in the Brahms.
There is really something special in her way of producing sound.
I also found the baroque violin rendition of the original Bach brilliant. Completely different than Milstein (or Perlman) it has a special character. Quite majestic.

Not as good as other Tom Chapin tapes we have.......2000-01-13
"Zag Zig" just isn't as good as the other two Tom Chapin tapes we own, "Family Tree" and "In My Hometown." The songs "Vitamin Si" and "R-E-C-Y-C-L-E" are the only real standouts on "Zag Zig," in my opinion. I'd be hard-pressed to choose only two favorites from the other two tapes I mentioned. If you are new to Tom Chapin, go for "Family Tree." I think it's one of the best children's tapes I've ever heard.

We've had this CD for about 4 years, and still listen to it in the car. Most every song is a great sing-along for kids and adults alike. One of our very faves is Bruno's Christmas On The Mall. What an adventure! You will not be disappointed with this CD, and your kids will love it. Backwards Birthday Party, Vitamin Si, Best of Companions are other great ones. The only ones we don't care for too much are the last 2, but the Grand (or Great-Grandparents) will like the Ragtime Dance. We will probably buy more CDs by this not quite as famous brother of Harry.
